Unit 6 Animals-Reading Club1&2 1. Content Overview This unit focuses on the theme of animals. Reading Club 1 presents two short passages about penguins and giraffes. The passage about penguins describes their appearance, such as big bodies, small heads, short necks and legs, as well as their unique abilities like swimming fast and laying eggs in groups. The text about giraffes tells about their physical features like big eyes on a small head, long necks, and their daily behaviors such as the way of drinking water and sleeping. Reading Club 2 may introduce more in - depth knowledge about animals, perhaps about their habitats, diets, or the relationship between different animals. 教学目标 2.1 Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master key words and phrases related to animals, such as “spread”, “bend”, “reach”, “stand still”, “rest... on...” etc. Students can understand and use sentence patterns for describing animals, like “They have... so...” , “However,... it is difficult to...” Learn about the physical characteristics, living habits and other basic information of different animals. 2.2 Ability Objectives Improve students' reading skills, including skimming for general ideas, scanning for specific information and inferring the meaning of new words from context. Enable students to describe animals in English by organizing information and using appropriate language. Develop students' listening ability through listening to the text recordings. 2.3 Emotional Objectives Arouse students' interest in learning about animals and cultivate their love and respect for nature. Encourage students to cooperate and communicate with each other in group work, enhancing their teamwork spirit. 教学重难点 3.1 Teaching Key Points Mastery of new words and phrases related to animal descriptions. Comprehension of the reading passages about animals, and extraction of important information. Application of sentence patterns for animal description. 3.2 Teaching Difficult Points Helping students understand some complex sentences in the text and use them correctly. Guiding students to describe animals vividly and accurately in their own words based on the information they have learned. 4.1 New Words Penguin - related: spread (v. 展开), bend (v. 弯曲), stand still (静止不动), lay eggs (下蛋) Giraffe - related: reach (v. 够到), rest... on... (把…… 靠在…… 上) 4.2 Phrases swim very fast (游得非常快) have to (不得不) sit on the ground (坐在地上) 4.3 Sentence Patterns They have black backs and white fronts, so in the water, other animals cannot see them well from above or below. However, with their long necks, it is difficult to drink water. They have to spread their front legs wide and bend their necks, so their heads can reach the ground. 教学过程 5.1 Lead - in (5 minutes) Show some pictures of various animals on the PPT, such as pandas, tigers, elephants, etc. Ask students to name the animals they see and describe them briefly using adjectives they have learned before, like “cute”, “strong”, “big” etc. T: “Boys and girls, look at these pictures. What animals can you see? And how would you describe them?” Ss: “I can see a panda. It is very cute.” 5.2 Pre - reading (10 minutes) Divide students into pairs. Present two pictures, one of a penguin and the other of a giraffe. Let students discuss in pairs what they know about these two animals. T: “Now, work in pairs. Look at these two pictures of a penguin and a giraffe. Share with your partner what you know about them.” After the discussion, invite several pairs to share their ideas with the whole class. Then, introduce some new words and phrases that may appear in the reading passages. Explain their meanings and usages through examples and body language. For example, when teaching “spread”, stretch your arms wide; for “bend”, bend your knees. Write the new words and phrases on the blackboard: spread, bend, reach, stand still, lay eggs, rest... on... etc. 5.3 While - reading (15 minutes) 5.3.1 Fast Reading Ask students to read the two passages about penguins and giraffes quickly. Set two questions for them to answer: “What are the main ideas of the two passages?” and “What are the most obvious features of penguins and giraffes mentioned in the text?” Students read the passages and then answer the questions. Check the answers together. T: “Read the passages quickly and find out the answers to these two questions. Five minutes for you.” 5.3.2 Careful Reading Let students read the passages again carefully. This time, ask them to complete a table on the PPT, which includes columns like “Animal Name”, “Physical Features”, “Unique Abilities” and “Daily Behaviors”. While students are reading, walk around the classroom to offer help if needed. After they finish, ask some students to come to the front of the classroom and fill in the table on the PPT with their answers. Then, have a class discussion to check and correct the answers. Analyze some difficult sentences in the text, such as “They have to spread their front legs wide and bend their necks, so their heads can reach the ground.” Explain the sentence structure and the function of each part. Let students imitate the sentence pattern to make their own sentences. 5.4 Post - reading (10 minutes) Divide students into groups of four. Each group chooses either a penguin or a giraffe. Ask them to make a short oral presentation about the animal they choose, using the information from the text and their own words. Provide some guiding questions for their presentation, such as “What does the animal look like?”, “What can it do?”, “What are its daily habits?” Each group prepares for 3 minutes and then presents in front of the class. After each presentation, other groups can ask questions or give comments. T: “Now, work in your groups. Prepare a short presentation about the animal you choose. Three minutes for preparation.” After all the presentations, summarize the key points of the two passages again, emphasizing the importance of understanding and protecting animals. 5.5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summarize the new words, phrases and sentence patterns learned in this class. Review the main content of the reading passages about penguins and giraffes. T: “Let's review what we have learned today. Who can tell me some new words we learned?” Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about an animal they like. They should include its appearance, living habits and why they like it. The passage should be at least 80 words. Encourage students to collect more information about animals, such as through reading books, watching documentaries, etc., and share it in the next class. 教学反思 In this class, the use of pictures and group discussions in the lead - in and pre - reading stages effectively aroused students' interest and activated their prior knowledge. However, some students were still a little shy to speak in pairs or groups, and more encouragement and guidance are needed in the future. During the while - reading process, most students could understand the main ideas of the passages through fast reading and extract specific information in careful reading. But when dealing with some complex sentences, a few students still had difficulties in understanding. In the future, more sentence - analyzing exercises should be designed. The post - reading group presentation activity provided students with a good opportunity to practice speaking and using the learned knowledge. But the time for each group's presentation was a bit tight, which affected the full play of some students' abilities. Next time, the time allocation should be more reasonable. Overall, through this class, students have increased their understanding of animals and improved their reading, speaking and writing skills to a certain extent. But continuous improvement and adjustment of teaching methods are still required to better meet the learning needs of different students. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
