Unit 5 Now and Then-Lesson 1 Changes in Our Town This lesson, "Changes in Our Town," is from Unit 5 Now and Then of the 2024 version of the Beijing Normal University Edition English textbook for Grade 7. It focuses on the theme of the changes in a town. Through texts, pictures, and discussions, students will explore how the town has transformed in various aspects such as buildings, transportation, and the environment. The materials are designed to engage students in comparing the past and the present, and expressing their views on these changes. 教学目标 1. Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master key vocabulary related to changes, such as "change, development, modern, traditional, building, transportation, crowded, spacious, peaceful, shopping mall, etc." Learn important sentence patterns for describing changes, like "Our town has changed a lot over the years. There used to be small houses, but now there are tall buildings. Transportation has improved, making travel faster and easier. The old market was replaced by a modern shopping mall." Understand the usage of the present perfect tense and "used to do" in the context of describing changes. 2. Ability Objectives Enable students to describe the changes in their hometown or a town in English, using appropriate words and sentence structures. Develop students' skills in comparing the past and the present, and explaining the reasons and impacts of changes. Improve students' reading comprehension ability by extracting relevant information from the text about town changes. Enhance students' listening skills through listening to materials related to town changes. 3. Emotional Objectives Foster students' awareness of and interest in the development and changes around them. Cultivate students' love for their hometown and a sense of pride in its progress. 教学重难点 1. Key Points Mastery of key vocabulary and sentence patterns for describing changes. Grasp the usage of the present perfect tense and "used to do" in expressing changes. Be able to understand and extract main information about town changes from texts and listening materials. 2. Difficult Points Using the present perfect tense and "used to do" accurately and flexibly in different situations. Organizing thoughts and expressing complex ideas about the reasons and impacts of town changes in English. 1. Vocabulary Nouns: change, development, building, transportation, mall, environment, etc. Adjectives: modern, traditional, crowded, spacious, peaceful, etc. Phrases: used to do, in the past, at present, more and more, set up, build up, etc. 2. Grammar Present Perfect Tense: Structure: have/has + past participle Function: To express an action that started in the past and continues to the present or an action that happened in the past with a result that affects the present. For example, "The town has become more modern." Used to do: Structure: used to + verb 原形 Function: To describe an action or a state that was true in the past but is no longer true now. For example, "People used to walk to work, but now they drive cars." 教学过程 1. Warming-up (5 minutes) Show some pictures of the local area in the past and now, such as pictures of old and new streets, buildings. Ask students some simple questions, like "What can you see in these pictures? Are they the same or different?" Let students share their initial observations and thoughts briefly. This step aims to arouse students' interest and lead them to the topic of town changes. 2. Pre-reading (10 minutes) Introduce new words and phrases. Use pictures, real objects or body language to explain the meanings of words like "modern, traditional, building, transportation, crowded, spacious, etc." For example, show a picture of a modern skyscraper and say "This is a modern building. It's very tall and has many floors." Conduct a vocabulary game. Group the new words into pairs of antonyms, like "modern - traditional", "crowded - spacious". Divide students into small groups. Give each group a set of word cards. Students need to match the antonyms as quickly as possible. The first group to finish correctly wins. Present some simple sentences related to the new words, such as "The traditional house is small and quiet." "The transportation in big cities is often crowded." Let students read and repeat these sentences to get familiar with the usage of new words. This pre - reading activity helps students build a vocabulary base for better understanding of the reading text. 3. While - reading (15 minutes) First reading: Let students read the text quickly and answer two general questions: "What is the main idea of the text? Which aspects of the town have changed?" Ask several students to share their answers. This helps students get a general understanding of the text. Second reading: Instruct students to read the text carefully and find specific information about the changes in different aspects, such as changes in buildings, transportation, environment, etc. Let students fill in the table according to the text. Then ask them to report their answers. This step trains students' ability to extract detailed information from the text. Third reading: Ask students to read the text again and pay attention to the sentences using the present perfect tense and "used to do". Underline these sentences in the text. Select several sentences, like "Our town has changed a lot over the years. There used to be a small market here, but now it’s a shopping mall." Analyze the structure and usage of these sentence patterns with students. Let students imitate these sentence patterns to make their own sentences about the changes in the town. This part helps students understand and practice the key grammar points in the context of the text. 4. Post - reading (10 minutes) Group discussion: Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. Give each group a topic related to town changes, such as "The advantages and disadvantages of the changes in our town", "What will our town be like in the future?" Each group discusses the topic for about 5 minutes. Encourage students to express their opinions freely and use the words, sentence patterns and information they learned in the text. Then, each group selects a representative to give a presentation in front of the class. Other groups can ask questions or make comments. This activity can improve students' oral expression ability and critical thinking ability. 5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary: Summarize the key points of this lesson with students, including important vocabulary, sentence patterns, grammar and the main content of the text about town changes. Review the process of how to describe changes in different aspects. Homework: Ask students to write a short passage about the changes in their hometown. They need to use at least 5 new words and 3 sentence patterns learned in this lesson. Let students collect more pictures or information about the changes in their hometown and prepare to share them in the next class. 教学反思 After teaching this lesson, I reflected on the following aspects. In terms of teaching methods, the combination of pictures, vocabulary games, reading tasks and group discussions was effective in engaging students. However, during the group discussion, some students were a bit shy and did not actively participate. In the future, I should create a more relaxed and inclusive atmosphere to encourage all students to express themselves. For the grammar part, although students seemed to understand the usage of the present perfect tense and "used to do" in class, some still made mistakes when doing the homework. I might need to design more targeted grammar exercises and provide more opportunities for students to practice in real - life - like situations. Overall, through this teaching process, students had a basic understanding of town changes and improved their language skills to some extent, but there is still room for improvement in teaching strategies and content delivery. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
