Unit 8 Protecting the environment Lesson 4 Global warming 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Knowledge Objectives
Students will master vocabulary related to global warming (e.g., global warming, major reasons, effects, solutions, solar power) and understand the passage about global warming, its causes, effects, and solutions.
Students will be able to comprehend the passage, judge true or false, complete mind maps, discuss actions to slow down global warming, and write about another environmental problem.
2. Ability Objectives
Improve reading and writing skills: Extract information from the passage to complete tasks and write about environmental problems.
Enhance speaking and collaborative skills: Discuss actions to address global warming and other environmental issues in groups.
3. Affective Objectives
Help students recognize the seriousness of global warming, inspire them to take action to slow it down, and foster a sense of responsibility towards protecting the global environment.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key Vocabulary & Phrases
Global warming - related words: global warming, major reasons, effects, solutions, solar power, wind power, recycle
Key phrases: be related to, lead to, play a role in, address (a problem)
2. Key Sentence Patterns
Describing global warming causes: “People burn things like gas, oil, and coal. They cut down trees and create a lot of waste. These are major reasons for global warming.”
Explaining effects: “Global warming affects everything on the planet... For example, the snow and ice in the North Pole are starting to melt. This causes the sea level to rise, which can lead to more floods and storms.”
Suggesting solutions: “We can help slow down global warming by taking some simple actions. Instead of driving, we can choose to walk or bike. Turn off devices we aren’t using... Another great way to help is by planting trees... Just by making some small changes in our daily lives, we can play a role in addressing global warming.”
3. Key and Challenging Points
Key Points: Understand the passage about global warming's causes, effects, and solutions, master related vocabulary and phrases, and complete reading tasks.
Challenging Points: Writing a detailed description of another environmental problem with its causes, effects, and solutions.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm - up & Lead - in
Activity: Environmental Problem Discussion
Ask students two questions: “What problems do you think our environment is facing now?”, “Do you think these problems are related to human activities?”. Let students share their answers.
Step 2: Reading & Comprehension
Activity 1: Passage Reading and True/False Judgment
Have students read the passage and write true (T) or false (F) for statements A - C:
A: Global warming is mainly caused by nature. (F, mainly caused by human activities like burning fuels, cutting trees, creating waste)
B: Global warming affects everything on the planet. (T)
C: Planting trees is a great way to slow down global warming. (T)
Check answers to ensure students grasp the main content of the passage.
Activity 2: Mind Map Completion about Global Warming
Guide students to read the passage again and complete the mind map:
Major reasons: Burn things like gas, oil, coal; Cut down trees; Create a lot of waste.
Effects: The snow and ice in the North Pole melt; The sea level is rising, which can lead to more floods and storms.
Solutions: Choose to walk or bike instead of driving; Turn off devices not in use; Plant trees and do other “green” activities.
Step 3: Speaking & Collaboration
Activity: Global Warming Action Discussion
Divide students into groups. Ask each group to discuss: “Is there anything you can do to slow down global warming? Think and tick the actions you can take.” Then have groups share their ideas with the class.
Step 4: Writing & Sharing
Activity: Other Environmental Problem Writing
Invite students to think about another environmental problem (e.g., air pollution, water pollution, plastic pollution) and write about it, covering questions A - D: “What is the problem?”, “What do you think are the causes of this problem?”, “What are its effects?”, “What should we do to solve this problem?”. Then have some students share their writings with the class.
Step 5: Summary & Homework
Activity 1: Lesson Summary
Recap key vocabulary and phrases (global warming - related terms), the content of the passage about global warming, and the importance of taking action against environmental problems.
Activity 2: Homework Assignment
Assign homework: (1) Polish your writing about another environmental problem and share with classmates. (2) Discuss with family about what your family can do to address global warming or other environmental issues.
IV. Assessment
In - class: Assess students’ performance in reading comprehension tasks, mind map completion, group discussion participation, writing, and ability to express about global warming and other environmental problems.
Homework: Evaluate students' polished writings and their family discussions to see if they can reflect on and practice environmental protection in daily life and with family.
V. Design Purpose
Skill Integration: Combine reading (comprehension), writing (environmental problem passage), speaking (discussion, sharing), and collaborative skills to deepen understanding of global warming and environmental protection.
Real - life Application: Use discussion, writing, and homework to help students connect with the importance of addressing global warming and other environmental issues, enhancing their sense of global environmental responsibility.
