Unit 2 Festivals and holidays Lesson 5 Special New Year celebrations 教学设计 I. Teaching Objectives 1. Knowledge Objectives Students will master vocabulary related to New Year celebrations (e.g., reunion dinner, lucky money, Songkran, grapes, suitcase, adventures) and understand the passage about special New Year traditions from different countries. Students will be able to comprehend the passage, answer questions, match countries with their New Year celebrations, and research and present other special New Year celebrations. 2. Ability Objectives Improve reading and research skills: Extract information from the passage to complete tasks and search the internet for more New Year celebration information. Enhance speaking and collaborative skills: Discuss New Year celebrations in groups and present researched celebrations to the class. 3. Affective Objectives Broaden students' horizons about global New Year celebrations, help them appreciate cultural diversity, and encourage them to be curious about and respectful of different cultures. II. Language Knowledge 1. Key Vocabulary & Phrases New Year celebration - related words: reunion dinner, lucky money, Songkran, grapes, suitcase, adventures Key phrases: street parties, water fights, bring good luck 2. Key Sentence Patterns Introducing New Year traditions: “On Chinese New Year’s Day, the whole family gets together for a reunion dinner.” “Thai people call their new year Songkran. It is on the 13th of April.” Talking about customs: “When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Spanish eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the year.” “Some people walk around the block with an empty suitcase on New Year’s Eve. This shows that the next year will be full of adventures.” 3. Key and Challenging Points Key Points: Understand the passage about special New Year traditions, master related vocabulary and phrases, and complete reading and matching tasks. Challenging Points: Researching and presenting other special New Year celebrations comprehensively and clearly. III. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Warm - up & Lead - in Activity: New Year Tradition Sharing Ask students: “How do you celebrate the New Year?”. Let students share their own New Year celebration traditions. Step 2: Reading & Comprehension Activity 1: Passage Reading and Question Answering Have students read the passage and answer questions: “When is the New Year in Thailand? Does it fall on the same day as the New Year in China?”, “Can you find anything in common in these different celebrations?”. Check answers to ensure students grasp the main content of the passage. Activity 2: Country - Celebration Matching Ask students to match each country (China, Thailand, Spain, Ecuador) with its New Year celebrations. Step 3: Research & Group Work Activity 1: Internet Research on New Year Celebrations Assign students to search the internet for more information about other special and fun New Year celebrations and complete the table with place, date, and New Year celebrations. Activity 2: Group Preparation for Presentation Divide students into groups. Ask each group to choose one special New Year celebration, make a colourful card with information (place, date, activities) on one side and a picture on the other, and prepare to present the card to the class. Step 4: Presentation & Discussion Activity: Group Presentation Invite each group to present their special New Year celebration card to the class, introducing the celebration. Then have a class discussion about the presented celebrations. Step 5: Summary & Homework Activity 1: Lesson Summary Recap key vocabulary and phrases (New Year celebration - related terms), the content about special New Year traditions from different countries, and the process of researching and presenting. Activity 2: Homework Assignment Assign homework: (1) Write a short passage about a special New Year celebration you learned today. (2) Share the passage with your family and talk about cultural diversity. IV. Assessment In - class: Assess students’ performance in reading comprehension tasks, country - celebration matching, group research, and presentation to check understanding of the passage and ability to express about New Year celebrations. Homework: Evaluate students' New Year celebration passages and their sharing with family to see if they can reflect on and appreciate cultural diversity. V. Design Purpose Skill Integration: Combine reading (comprehension), writing (short passage), speaking (discussion, presentation), and research skills to deepen understanding of New Year celebrations and cultural diversity.
