Besides, the big ideas put forward in recent years provide an overall guidance for effective instructional design. The big idea of the whole unit is to help the young foster the morality and form the right view and attitude towards money in such “money talks” society. Based on the unit learning objectives indicated on the contents page and Unit 5 opening page, the teaching combined “Listening and Speaking” with “Viewing and Talking” to compare different people’s attitudes towards money. The listening and speaking part is a news report about a cleaner returning lost money, while the viewing and talking part is a film clip of a poor man being treated rudely by a restaurant boss, which opens up the theme discussion on "people’s attitudes towards money" for this unit. II.Student analysis They are in senior Grade two.Most of them often struggle with English due to a shaky foundation. To address this in the listening section, teachers should restructure the listening activities to lower the difficulty level. Throughout the learning process, it’s crucial to design a series of listening activities with specific tasks to help them to gradually acquire and organize information. Moreover, they are often hesitant to speak English. Given that the unit's topic is related to everyday life and likely to spark diverse thoughts, teachers need to foster an environment that encourages students to actively engage in discussions. This includes guiding them to voice their opinions and fostering a supportive atmosphere that emboldens them to speak English. III.Teaching objectives Learning competence：; 1. Be able to summarize the main idea of a news report by analyzing the basic elements 5Ws and 1H; 2. Be able to make reasonable inferences about a person’s personality in listening process; 3. Be able to compare the different attitudes towards money between the cleaner and the restaurant boss. Language competence: 1. Retell the news report based on the mind map and voice their opinions on the attitudes towards money. Cultural awareness: 1. Form a right value of money. Thinking quality: 1. Independent learning 2. Collaborative learning VI.Teaching procedures Activity 1：Leading-in Create a scenario where 100,000 yuan has gone missing, and the class is tasked with solving the mystery. Set the class by assigning the role of detectives to the students, who will uncover the truth with the help of clues provided by the teacher, step by step. Design purpose: To stimulate students’ interest in the class by playing the detective games. They will wonder who picked up the money finally, meanwhile, paving the way for the listening part. Activity 2 Pre-listening Provide students with some key vocabulary words they will hear during the listening exercise; these words are also crucial clues for finding the answers. These words have already been presented to the students in the study guide, and this is just a quick check to see if they have mastered them. Design purpose:To assist students in overcoming potential words obstacles in listening and accumulating related words and phrases. Activity 3 While-listening 1. The first step is to inform students of the six elements of a news report, and then play the listening material for them to fill in the blanks. If they encounter difficulties during the filling-in-blanks process, the teacher will replay the sentence where the answer lies, striving to enable students to understand the background information in this news report and conclude tip 1:The elements 5Ws+1H may help us grasp the background information of the story. Design purpose:To summarize the main idea of a news report by analyzing the basic elements 5Ws and 1H, which will help them organize and understand the background information of the event. 2. Listen for the details. The teacher adapts the content from the textbook into multiple-choice questions, which range from simple to complex. This progression enables students to form a detailed understanding of the recording’s content. The teacher will play the recording twice, guiding students to choose the correct answers. Conclude tip 2:The character’s words and actions may tell us more about the character. Design purpose: To make the students understand this part easily by presenting the details of listening comprehension in the form of multiple-choice questions. To teach students to infer the characters' personalities according to the person’s words and actions. Activity 4 Post-listening 1.The teacher plays a video that is in line with the listening content to review the event. During the viewing process, the teacher guides students to pay attention to the relationships among the characters, the cause, process, and outcome of the event. Visualizing the entire event concretely is the basis for the next step of creating a mind map.And conclude 3:A mind map may help us gain a better understanding of the logic of the event. Design purpose: To make abstract listening materials concrete through visual viewing, this approach allows students to understand the causes and effects of the event. To enhance students’ language competence as well as logical thinking ability by completing a mind map and retelling the entire story. 2.Summarize the question raised in leading-in part and Chen Liyan’s attitude towards money,and lead to the video of the restaurant boss’s attitude towards money by question 3. Question 1：Who find the 100,000 yuan? Question 2: What is Chen Liyan’s attitude towards money? Question 3: Does everyone have a right attitude towards money? Design purpose: To complete the previous task posted in the Leading-in part and conclude Chen liyan’s attitude towards money. To arouse students’ critical thinking about the question:Does everyone have a right attitude towards money? 3.The listening exercise on page 50 is about Chen Liyan, an ordinary person in real life with a positive attitude towards money. This part is from page 55 of this unit, a clip of “ The Million Pound Bank Note”, which satirically shows the money-oriented attitude of a restaurant boss. In view of the large-unit teaching approach, the teacher combines the two parts together. Design purpose: To guide students to reflect on their own views of money by comparing different people's attitudes towards money, the activity also lays the groundwork for the discussion in step 5. Activity 5 Group discussion Working in groups , the students are guided to discuss three questions according to what they have learned in this class. After their presentation, the teacher will lead the students imagine making a Wechat call to Chen Liyan to share her views on the value of money. Design purpose: To cultivate students’ group work spirit, critical thinking, language competence by discussion. To make students immersed in a realistic WeChat conversation with Chen Liyan, striking a chord with students. Activity 6 Summary The teacher will quote some sentences about the value of money from the call to Chen Liyan and an article read by the teacher before. Design purpose: To form a right value towards money among students by summarizing the main theme of the lesson. Activity 7 Self-assessment At the end of the class, the teacher will guide students to do a self-assessment. Design purpose: To develop students’ self-monitoring skills, making them become more independent in their learning journey. Activity 8 Assignment Write a brief comment on Chen Liyan and the restaurant boss, adding students’ opinions towards money, around 80 words, based on the discussion in this lesson. Design purpose:To consolidate and internalize what has been learned in this lesson. To develop their critical thinking, language competence by writing. Activity 9 Blackboard design Design purpose: To make the listening material clearer and help the students retell the story of Chen Liyan. Ⅶ.Teaching reflection After this lesson, I made some reflections from the following dimensions: 1. Strengths: My teaching design in this lesson fully embodies the cultivation and training of students' language ability, thinking quality, cultural awareness and learning ability advocated by the core quality of English subjects.I designed some flexible activities to help students learn the language based on the real learning situations and truly practice the view of English learning activities. I explored the thematic meaning by creating a scenario and a situational line for this lesson,which stimulated students' desire to listen the record.And I combined “Listening and Speaking” with “Viewing and Talking” to form their cultural awareness, then it naturally inspires students to reflect on the right value towards money. I integrated Teaching, Learning and Assessment to provide timely feedback to improve learning and teaching.In short, this lesson highlights the educational value of English. 2. Shortcomings: In the listening session, students were given little time to do this task, so the time was not well grasped. And the questioning process should be more hierarchical, and more gradient questions should be set for students with different foundations, so that more students can have full opportunities to show. 3. Students’ performance: The overall performance of students is good, they can follow the teacher’s ideas to listen and think, and they can actively participate in various activities such as group work and the class is very active. 4.Improve the design: The teaching design should be more rational, scientific and practical. In the actual operation, we need to pay attention to the time and the students’ interest and cooperation.
