Unit 7 Let's volunteer!-Volunteers make the Games! This lesson is from Unit 7 "Let's volunteer!" of the 2024 Hebei Education Press English textbook for Grade 8. The topic "Volunteers make the Games!" focuses on the significance and various roles of volunteers in games. It includes reading materials about different volunteers' experiences and responsibilities in a sports event, vocabulary related to volunteering and games, as well as grammar usage in the context of describing volunteer work. Through this lesson, students will not only enhance their language skills but also develop an understanding and respect for volunteer work. 教学目标 A. Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master the key vocabulary and phrases related to volunteering and games, such as "volunteer", "event", "responsibility", "help out", "make a difference", etc. Students will understand and be able to use the target grammar, including present continuous tense for expressing future arrangements in the context of volunteer work (e.g., "I'm volunteering at the games this weekend."), and the usage of modal verbs like "should" to give advice on volunteer work (e.g., "We should be friendly to all the participants."). Students will be able to comprehend the reading passage about volunteers in games, extracting main ideas and important details. B. Ability Objectives Develop students' reading skills, including skimming for the main idea, scanning for specific information, and inferring meaning from context. Improve students' speaking skills by enabling them to talk about their own ideas and experiences of volunteering, and to discuss the importance and challenges of volunteer work in games. Enhance students' writing skills, allowing them to write a short passage about a volunteer activity they would like to participate in, using the learned vocabulary and grammar. C. Emotional Objectives Cultivate students' awareness of volunteer spirit and encourage them to actively participate in volunteer activities in the future. Foster students' sense of social responsibility and teamwork through the discussion and understanding of volunteer work in group activities. 教学重难点 A. Key Points Key vocabulary and phrases related to volunteering and games, and their correct usage in sentences. The usage of present continuous tense for future arrangements and modal verbs for giving advice in the context of volunteer work. Comprehending the reading passage and summarizing the main ideas and details about volunteers in games. B. Difficult Points Helping students distinguish and correctly use the present continuous tense for future arrangements from its common usage for present actions. Guiding students to express their own thoughts and opinions about volunteer work in fluent and accurate English, especially in group discussions and writing tasks. Encouraging students to internalize the volunteer spirit and actively consider participating in volunteer activities in real life. A. Vocabulary Volunteering-related: volunteer (n. & v.), volunteering (n.), volunteerism (n.), volunteer work, volunteer organization, helper, assistance, support Games-related: event, sports event, competition, match, participant, player, audience, stadium, field Responsibilities: responsibility, task, duty, assignment, take on the responsibility, be responsible for Actions: help out, assist with, contribute to, make a difference, work together, cooperate B. Grammar Present Continuous Tense for Future Arrangements Structure: Subject + am/is/are + verb - ing + other components. Example: She is volunteering at the local community center next month. Modal Verbs for Giving Advice "Should": Subject + should + base form of the verb. Example: You should wear comfortable shoes when volunteering at the sports event. 教学过程 A. Warming-up (5 minutes) Greet the students and show them some pictures of different international sports games, such as the Olympics, the World Cup, etc. Ask the students: "Do you know what makes these games so successful besides the athletes?" Lead the students to think about the role of volunteers. Elicit some words related to volunteers from the students, and write them on the blackboard. B. Pre - reading (10 minutes) Present the new vocabulary related to volunteering and games on the PPT. Teach the pronunciation, meaning, and usage of each word or phrase through examples and simple explanations. For example, for the phrase "help out", say: "We often help out at the school library. It means we offer our help there." Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a set of flashcards with the new words and phrases. One student shows a flashcard, and the other student tries to use it in a sentence. Then they switch roles. Walk around the classroom to monitor and provide guidance. Show a short video clip about volunteers working at a sports event. After watching, ask the students some general questions, such as "What were the volunteers doing in the video?" "How did they look?" to arouse their interest in the reading passage. C. While - reading (15 minutes) Skimming: Give the students the reading passage about volunteers in games. Ask them to skim the passage quickly (within 2 - 3 minutes) and find out the main idea. Then invite some students to share their answers. The main idea could be that volunteers play important roles in making sports games successful and the passage describes different types of volunteer work in games. Scanning: Ask the students to read the passage again, this time scanning for specific information. Present some questions on the PPT, such as "What are the three main responsibilities of the volunteers in the passage?", "How many volunteers are there in this event?", etc. Let the students read carefully and find the answers. After they finish, check the answers together. Detailed Reading: Read the passage sentence by sentence with the students. Explain the difficult sentences, new grammar points, and language expressions. For example, when encountering the sentence "I'm volunteering at the games this weekend to help the athletes feel welcome.", explain the usage of present continuous tense for future arrangements. Analyze the sentence structure and give more examples for students to understand. Also, when seeing "We should provide good service to the audience.", explain the usage of "should" for giving advice. Have a group discussion. Divide the students into groups of four. Ask each group to discuss and summarize the qualities that a good volunteer should have based on the reading passage. Each group selects a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class. D. Post - reading (10 minutes) Speaking Activity: Ask the students to talk about their own experiences of volunteering or an imaginary volunteer activity they would like to participate in. They can use the learned vocabulary and grammar. Give them some prompts on the PPT, such as "When did you volunteer?" "What did you do?" "What do you think you should do if you volunteer at a sports event in the future?" Walk around the classroom to listen to their conversations and offer help if necessary. Writing Activity: Ask the students to write a short passage (about 80 - 100 words) about a volunteer activity they hope to take part in. They should include the following information: what kind of activity it is, when and where it will be held, what their responsibilities will be, and why they want to do it. After they finish writing, ask some students to read their passages aloud, and give them some positive feedback and suggestions for improvement. E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary: Summarize the key points of this lesson with the students, including the important vocabulary, grammar, and the main ideas of the reading passage. Emphasize the significance of volunteer work again. Homework: Ask the students to search for more information about volunteer activities in their city and write a short report about one of them next class. Encourage the students to try to participate in a small volunteer activity in their neighborhood during the weekend and share their experiences in the next English class. 教学反思 After this class, I need to reflect on several aspects. Firstly, in the vocabulary teaching part, although the pair - work activity seemed to be engaging, some students still had difficulty using the new words correctly in sentences. I should design more practice activities, such as vocabulary - based games or short writing tasks using new words immediately after teaching. Secondly, during the reading process, some students had trouble understanding long and complex sentences. In the future, I should provide more pre - teaching of sentence - analysis skills and give more time for students to practice understanding difficult sentences independently. Thirdly, in the speaking and writing activities, some students were still too shy to express themselves. I need to create a more relaxed and supportive atmosphere, and maybe start with more guided speaking and writing tasks to build their confidence. Overall, I should adjust my teaching methods and activities according to the students' actual performance to better achieve the teaching objectives and help students improve their English language abilities and understanding of volunteer work. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
