Which book you should read based on your next travel destination
◎Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.
Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip.
◎Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.

◎Consider picking up “The Great Gatsby” if you’re going to The Hamptons in New York.

◎As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin about scary story ideas. Hours later, I completed my first short story. Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also, since then, I’ve read more and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work:what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else's? What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of competence. Oftentimes, hobbies begin as something just for fun. But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and inadequacy. I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it, whether it be playing the piano, or drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I’m not, the enjoyment tapers off as, slowly, I think mediocrity(平庸) isn’t acceptable anymore.
Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly. I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word, a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby.
But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves.
24.What does the author do in the first paragraph?
A.He challenges a tradition.
B.He relates an experience.
C.He envisions a coming trend.
D.He compares varied hobbies.
25.Which can best replace the underlined phrase “tapers off” in paragraph 1?
A.Thins out.
B.Tops out.
C.builds up.
D.Spreads around.
26.Why does the author drop writing constantly?
A.He is inadequate for it.
B.He prefers mediocrity.
C.He equates joy with achievement.
D.He receives bitter comment.
27.What message does the passage convey?
A.Mediocrity is the key to enjoyment.
B.A hobby shared is a hobby squared.
C.Excellence ensures academic success.
D.Enjoyment outweighs excellence in hobbies.
C
The sharp fin. The rows upon rows of sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks you see on television in Jaws or Discovery’s “Shark Week” are not the friendliest looking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean. Despite their portrayals (刻画) in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures that are weaker than they appear.
One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans. Actually when sharks attack humans, it is because they mistake a human for their normal prey, seals or dolphins. They don’t seek out humans on purpose. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very important to the ocean as they are at the top of the food chain. Some sharks even control the balance of an ecosystem through fear alone. Tiger sharks in Australia help protect seagrass meadows from turtles. Turtles eat the seagrass and without the sharks, will destroy these meadows. When tiger sharks are present though, the turtles are scared away, holding back their appetite for seagrass and protecting its growth.
Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want their fins. About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic. Shark fin is a way for people to show off their wealth. Shark fins are also believed to have medicinal benefits, though there is no evidence or proof that they actually do.
28.What do most people think about sharks?
A.They are ugly.
B.They are important.
C.They are violent.
D.They are complicated.
29.What does the author try to show by comparing shark bites to lightning strikes?
A.Shark bites are deadly.
B.Shark bites are rare.
C.Shark bites are unpredictable.
D.Shark bites are painful.
30.Why should sharks be scared of humans according to the author?
A.Humans keep sharks to show off.
B.Humans catch sharks for medical research.
C.Humans kill sharks in large quantities.
D.Humans are greater in number than sharks.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Ocean Life: Save Our Sharks!
B.Sharks: Kings of Protectors?
C.Ocean Life: An Ecological Crisis!
D.Sharks: Killers or Misunderstood?
D
The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans’ future. He compared the potential problem of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat,” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added, “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the question: If temperatures do rise really quickly, might humans get smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.”
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak. “We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
32.How do mammals cope with climate change according to Brusatte?
A.Moving to colder regions.
B.Reducing their body size.
C.Losing their weight.
D.Adapting their diet.
33.What does the underlined word “dissipation” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Exchange.
B.Formation.
C.Absorption.
D.Emission.
34.What is Adrian Lister’s attitude towards the recent study?
A.Worried.
B.Objective.
C.Skeptical.
D.Approving.
35.What is the best title of this text?
A.The Threat of Climate Change to Human Survival
B.The Impact of Climate Change on Mammal Body Sizes
C.The Evolutionary Trends in Mammal Body Sizes
D.The Adaptive Strategies of Mammals to Climate Change

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Gratitude, in its simplest form, is the act of feeling grateful for what you have. 36. If you are a person that practices gratitude regularly, you may have benefited a lot from that. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can significantly boost people’s happiness and well-being, allowing them to live a more fulfilling life. So how can we practice gratitude? Here are ways that will set you in the right direction.
Keep a gratitude journal. Keep it simple and each day write 1 — 3 things you are grateful for in the morning and in the evening. 37. A lot of people focus on what they don’t have, or complain all day, making themselves upset. But when you focus on the positive, no matter how small, you attract more of the positive.
Don’t compare. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and want what they have. When you do that, you’re not appreciating your own unique journey. We’re all on a different life path and we were born to stand out. 38. .
Flash a smile. A lot of people don’t smile these days, and often you have to be the one that initiates (发起) it. Smiling at someone can not only make you feel good, but also make their day, too. 39. While you’re at it, give compliments (问候), too.
40. It’s easy to focus on the negative of the past or worry about the future. If you can live in the moment and take in everything as they happen, you’ll discover joys that are often overlooked. There are joys of playing with your classmates in the playground, the conversation with your friends across the table and the smell of rain. Enjoy and embrace these moments.
A.Live in the present.
B.So how often do you practice gratitude?
C.Do you know how to practice gratitude sincerely?
D.It will allow you to see more joy and beauty in your days.
E.Always discover the positive side of the people around you.
F.So smile more and watch how your day can instantly turn around.
G.Value the path you take and be grateful for who you are and what you have.

The smell of roasted chicken filled the kitchen as we gathered for our usual Friday dinner. Having swallowed a big mouthful of chicken, I took a deep breath and began, “Could I invite some friends over tomorrow? Just for the afternoon?”
My parents exchanged a glance, then nodded readily. But beside me, my younger sister, Lily, froze. Her wide eyes locked onto mine. “But... what about Miracle? She’ll be terrified, Ethan.”
Miracle was a cat Lily rescued on a rainy day last winter. True to her name, the cat had survived. Yet, it remained a creature of profound shyness: Loud voices sent her trembling under beds; sudden movements made her jump. She wasn’t just a pet; she was a fragile soul Lily fiercely protected.
“I promise, Lily,” I insisted, leaning forward, meeting her worried gaze. “We’ll stay in the living room. No loud music, no shouting games. I’ll keep the back door shut tight, and I’ll warn everyone to be quiet. Miracle won’t even know they’re here.” I saw the conflict in her eyes — her desire to be supportive warring with her deep concern for the poor cat. After a tense silence, she finally gave a small, reluctant nod.
Saturday arrived with sunshine and laughter as my friends piled in. True to my word, I guided them straight to the living room, reminding them firmly about Miracle’s sensitivity.Initially, we chatted, played cards quietly. Glancing around, I spotted Miracle sliding silently down the hallway towards Lily’s room. Good, she’s keeping her distance, I thought, relieved.
As the afternoon wore on, however, the initial caution disappeared. A competitive board game led to enthusiastic cheers and laughter. Lost in the sheer fun of being with my friends, I forgot everything - he promise, the fragile creature.
After friends departed with cheerful goodbyes, I began tidying empty glasses, still lost in the happy scenes when Lily burst through the front door into her room. Then came her scream, “Ethan, Miracle is gone.”

66.小作文范文:
A Traditional Chinese Festival Food
Chinese festival food is a crucial element of traditional Chinese culture, with a wide variety of mouth-watering dishes. Today, I’d like to introduce dumplings, a traditional food that holds a special place in Chinese culture.
Dumplings are made of thin dough wrapped around a filling, usually consisting of meat and vegetables. They are often boiled or steamed and served with dipping sauce. Dumplings are not only delicious but also symbolize wealth and good fortune because their shape resembles ancient Chinese gold ingots.
In Chinese culture, dumplings are especially important during the Spring Festival. Families gather to make and eat dumplings together, which represents unity and happiness. This tradition has been passed down for generations, making dumplings a meaningful part of Chinese festivals.
67.大作文范文:
A cold wave of fear rushed through me. I remembered opening the backdoor for some air. Miracle must have got scared out of the house then. My sister looked at me in disbelief. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over. “You promised” The words weren’t shouted, but they cut deep. Shame burned my face. Without a word, I grabbed a flashlight and raced into the backyard, Lily closely behind, her calls for Miracle now desperate and choked with tears. We searched like crazy.
Luckily, we found Miracle in the backyard. There hidden under the thick bushes was Miracle. I dropped to my knees and scooped it up gently and placed it into Lily’s waiting hands. Once we went back home, I apologized sincerely, “I am so, so sorry.” I slowly reached out towards Lily, placing my hand gently over hers. “Can you forgive me?” Lily looked down at Miracle, then back at me, her eyes still wet but softening slightly. A fragile bridge of forgiveness began to form.

I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin
about scary story ideas.Hours later,I completed my first short story.Since then,I've written many
stories, short and long. But also, since then,I've read more and noticed just how well people my
age could write.Since then,I also felt less and less willing to share my work:what if my writing
isn't as good as everybody else's?What started off as something creative that I could share with
friends turned into competition changed by feelings of competence.Oftentimes, hobbies begin as
something just for fun.But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and
inadequacy.I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick
with it,whether it be playing the piano,or drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects
myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I'm not,the enjoyment tapers off
as,slowly,I think mediocrity()isn't acceptable anymore.
Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly.
I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is
never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming,
for a lack of better word,a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby.

still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set
by others or by ourselves.

The sharp fin.The rows upon rows of sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks you see
on television in Jaws or Discovery's "Shark Week"'are not the friendliest looking creatures. They
aren't exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean.Despite their
portrayals (in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures
that are weaker than they appear.
One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans.Actually
when sharks attack humans,it is because they mistake a human for their normal prey, seals or
dolphins. They don't seek out humans on purpose.Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by
lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very important to the ocean as they are at the top of the food chain. Some sharks
even control the balance of an ecosystem through fear alone.Tiger sharks in Australia help protect
seagrass meadows from turtles.Turtles eat the seagrass and without the sharks, will destroy these
meadows. When tiger sharks are present though, the turtles are scared away, holding back their
appetite for seagrass and protecting its growth.
Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they
should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a
few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively
few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want
their fins.About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic.Shark
fin is a way for people to show off their wealth.Shark fins are also believed to have medicinal
benefits, though there is no evidence or proof that they actually do.
28.What do most people think about sharks?
A.They are ugly.
B.They are important.
C.They are violent
D.They are complicated

The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size,as mammals with smaller
frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures,a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte,a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the
way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer
an insight into humans'future. He compared the potential problem of people as similar to that of
early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The rise and Reign of the Mamuals,Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts
of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas,an ecological principle known as
Bergmann's rule."The reasons are not entirely understood,but it is probably,in part,because
smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals and can
thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat,"he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was"a common way that mammals deal with climate
change".He added,"That's not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to
be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the
question:If temperatures do rise really quickly,might humans get smaller?And I think that's
certainly reasonable."
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink.Professor
Adrian Lister,of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the
recent human remains study is weak."We are not really controlled by natural selection,"he said.
"If that was going to happen, you'd need to find large people dying before they could reproduce
because of climate warming. That is not happening in today's world. We wear clothes,we have
got heating,we have got air conditioning if it is too hot."
32.How do mammals cope with climate change according to Brusatte?
A.Moving to colder regions.
B.Reducing their body size.
C.Losing their weight.
D.Adapting their diet.
33.What does the underlined word"dissipation"in Paragraph 3 mean?

The smell of roasted chicken filled the kitchen as we gathered for our usual Friday dinner
Having swallowed a big mouthful of chicken,I took a deep breath and began,"Could I invite
some friends over tomorrow?Just for the afternoon?
My parents exchanged a glance,then nodded readily.But beside me,my younger sister,Lily,
froze. Her wide eyes locked onto mine.But...what about Miracle? She'll be terrified,Ethan."
Miracle was a cat Lily rescued on a rainy day last winter.True to her name, the cat had
survived.Yet,it remained a creature of profound shyness:Loud voices sent her trembling under
beds;sudden movements made her jump. She wasn't just a pet;she was a fragile soul Lily fiercely
protected.
"I promise,Lily,"I insisted,leaning forward,meeting her worried gaze."We'll stay in the
living room.No loud music,no shouting games.I'll keep the back door shut tight, and I'll warn
everyone to be quiet.Miracle won't even know they're here."I saw the conflict in her eyes-her
desire to be supportive warring with her deep concern for the poor cat. After a tense silence, she
finally gave a small,reluctant nod.
Saturday arrived with sunshine and laughter as my friends piled in.True to my word,I guided
them straight to the living room, reminding them firmly about Miracle's sensitivity.Initially,we
chatted, played cards quietly.Glancing around,I spotted Miracle sliding silently down the hallway
towards Lily's room.Good,she's keeping her distance,I thought,relieved.
As the afternoon wore on,however, the initial caution disappeared.A competitive board
game led to enthusiastic cheers and laughter.Lost in the sheer fun of being with my friends,I
forgot everything-he promise,the fragile creature.
After friends departed with cheerful goodbyes,I began tidying empty glasses, still lost in the
happy scenes when Lily burst through the front door into her room. Then came her scream,"Ethan,

Archaeologists pieced together Roman wall fragments to reveal 2,000-year-old
paintings
Piecing together thousands of fragments of 2,000-year-old plaster has been the
ultimate archaeological jigsaw puzzle, but stunning frescoes have emerged.
The lower wall sections are pale pink and dotted with paint to imitate marble.
Above them are bright yellow panels with soft green borders with beautifully drawn
details of musical instruments.birds.flowers and fruit.
The frescoes make up at least 20 walls of a luxurious villa, which was built soon
after the Romans first founded London. And there are clues about who painted them.
Some fragments are scored with the letters F,E,C,I,T-the Latin word for has
made this'.But the piece where the name should be is missing. The archaeologists are
still sifting through the fragments to see if it could be amongst them.
