It will focus on employing effective and creative tools in the classroom, with a particular emphasis on collaborative learning. Dr Brad Garner, PhD, the Director of Faculty Enrichment at Indiana Wesleyan University, will be serving as our facilitator. I had the pleasure of attending Dr Garner’s session at a National Conference on the First Year Experience this semester, which was entitled Teachapalooza: A Festival of Bedazzling Strategies, Tools and Tactics. It was both inspiring and practical, perfect for relatively new faculty, as well as for more experienced faculty, in learning about a variety of the most effective teaching strategies that can be employed in the classroom. All faculty are invited to attend the workshop, particularly applicable given our cross-campus focus on collaborative learning. Dr Garner’s brief bio is included below. Brad Garner Brad Garner serves as Director of Faculty Enrichment in the Center for Learning and Innovation at Indiana Wesleyan University’s National & Global Campus. One of his greatest passions is helping faculty learn new and creative ways to teach and engage students. 1. What is the main purpose of the workshop mentioned in the text? A. To recruit new faculty. B. To enhance teaching strategies. C To discuss administrative duties. D. To review student performance. 2. Who is the facilitator of the upcoming workshop? A. A representative from Academic Affairs. Developing online courses. B Kurt Wenner, a former NASA illustrator (绘图员) turned professional artist, specializes in chalk-drawn three-dimensional illusions that seem carved into the pavement rather than drawn on it. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Kurt Wenner attended both the Rhode Island School of Design and ArtCenter in Pasadena and was quickly recruited to work for NASA while studying at the school. There, he was among the few highly skilled artists whose work was done merely by hand. Eventually, Kurt left the agency and moved to Europe to study some of the world’s greatest works of art. Disappointed to find no class on the principles of classicism, the young artist came up with his own self-learning program which involved spending countless hours drawing from the magnificent art collection of the Vatican Museums and the Pantheon. Every morning, Kurt would draw some of the world’s most famous works of art and sell them to tourists in order to support himself. It was during this period that he discovered the world of pavement illusions. One day, on his way to the Vatican to see the paintings that had become his inspiration, Kurt passed by artists creating images with chalk on the pavement. After being invited to try his hand at it, he spent only a few months developing a new art form known as 3D pavement art. Inspired by a wide range of subjects, Kurt Wenner creates sophisticated pavement artworks that, admired from just the right angle, have an impressive depth that makes them look sculpted into the pavement. The American artist is generally regarded as the inventor of 3D pavement art and his works have fascinated audiences in over 30 countries around the world. “In photographs of my 3D images, the art can appear as ‘real’ as the audience. Although I employ many visual tools to create illusion, the classical language of form is the most vital. Classicism is vastly superior to other forms of realism for the creation of illusion as it is based on human perception. Every stroke has the purpose of communicating form and space to the viewers. My perspective technique enables me to bring classicism into the present by creating a visual and geometrical link between a work of art and its contemporary surroundings,” said Kurt Wenner. 4. What made Kurt Wenner create his own self-learning program? A. His major in college. B. His work experience in NASA. C. The visit to the Vatican Museums. D. The lack of classes on the principles of classicism. 5. How did Kurt Wenner make a living in Europe at first? A. By teaching art classes. B. By selling his artworks. C. By working in a local museum. D. By creating pavement illusions. 6. What is special about Kurt Wenner’s 3D pavement artworks? A. They primarily show American culture. B. They are created based on famous artworks. C. They bring a “real” visual space to viewers. D. They combine digital and ancient elements. 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. The development of classicism in modern art B. Kurt Wenner: A NASA illustrator C. The origin and growth of 3D pavement art D. Kurt Wenner: Pioneer of 3D pavement illusions C If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience - since the fatigue may indicate you’re at higher risk for developing a condition that can lead to dementia (痴呆), a new study has found. Among participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm, 35.5% developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome (运动认知风险综合征), or MCR compared with 6.7% of people without those problems, according to the study. MCR is marked by slow walking speed and complaints of memory problems among older people who don’t already have dementia or a mobility disability. The risk of developing dementia more than doubles in those with this syndrome, which was first described in 2013. The findings are based on 445 adults who were aged 76 on average. Participants walked on treadmills (跑步机) so their initial gaits could be recorded, then were assessed annually from 2011 to 2018. The study authors also collected yearly data on participants’ recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments. Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed MCR syndrome. Compared with “good” sleepers, “poor” sleepers had only a slightly higher risk of MCR. “The study findings may help physicians and patients be more open to asking questions about sleep patterns, and to looking more closely at walking speed when making an early diagnosis,” said Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida. “If you’re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help,” Isaacson said, “that can include physical and occupational therapy evaluation, and at-home adaptations such as installing bars in the shower, removing clutter (杂物) and using night-lights.” “MCR syndrome is newly identified, so experts still have a lot to learn before they can explain in detail what causes it and how it affects the body,” Isaacson said. 8. What does the underlined word “fatigue” probably mean in paragraph 1? A. Weakness. B. Tiredness. C. Comfort. D. Happiness. 9. What might be the feature of MCR? A. Slow movement. B. More complaints. C. Excessive sleepiness. D. Rapid cognitive declines. 10. How did the study collect data on participants’ sleep? A. By writing sleep diaries. B. By doing treadmill tests. C. By conducting annual interviews. D. By monitoring sleep at home. 11. What should a senior with mobility issues do? A. Live normally. B. Reduce activity. C. Stay awake. D. Avoid falls. D Nostalgia (怀旧), or the experience of lovingly recalling and longing for your past, is seemingly fitting into our culture right now, with movie and TV screens especially expanded. On its surface, it seems simple: picturing fond feelings from our past just makes us feel good. But there’s a lot more going on. In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures. During the tasks, a machine examined the 34 participants. After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences. But Swets, another nostalgia expert, warned that using nostalgia for pain relief might not be a blanket solution for everyone. He highlights that nostalgia is a personal emotional experience that varies in terms of frequency and intensity. “What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.” As with other positive psychology interventions, the impacts can depend on the person. The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies. 12 In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design? A. Heat resistance. B. Anxiety level. C. Childhood experience. D. Picture cues. 13. What does the research find about nostalgia? A. It reduces bad stimuli. B. It makes brain active. C. It relieves one’s pain. D. It reshapes one’s past memory. 14. What does Swets say about nostalgia? A. It’s a good way to recall fine times. B. It’s a universal solution to pain relief. C. Its effect is influenced by relationships. D. Its form is similar to other interventions. 15. What will the follow-up study focus on? A. Nostalgic experience types. B. Personal nostalgia effects. C. The impact of nostalgia on all age groups. D. The reason for the popularity of nostalgia. Facing your fears When we are afraid of something, it can be tempting to avoid it. ____16____, avoiding situations can make us harder to face up to and mean that our fears grow. If instead we gradually expose ourselves to situations we fear, we can start to overcome them and feel more in control. Here are some steps to help you overcome your fears. Make a List Make a list of situations, places or objects that you fear. For example, if you are afraid of dogs, the list may include: looking at pictures of dogs; standing across the park from a dog on a leash (牵狗的绳子); standing in the same room as a dog on a leash; standing a few feet from a dog. ____17____, the list may include: saying “hi” to a co-worker, asking a stranger a question; making small talk with a cashier. ____18____ Once you have made a list, arrange things from the least scary to the scariest. You can do this by rating how much fear you have for each situation on the list, from “0” (No fear) to “10” (Extreme fear). Once you have rated each situation, use the “Fear Ladder” form to make a final list. Practise ____19____. Some steps can be practised daily, while other steps can only be done once in a while. However, the more often you practise the faster the fear will fade. Don’t forget to maintain the gains that you have made. For example, if you have overcome a fear of needles, you should schedule routine blood tests or donate blood every six months so that your fear of needles does not return. Reward Brave Behaviors It’s not easy facing fears. Reward yourself when you do it! It may be helpful to use specific rewards as a motivation to achieve a goal. For example, plan to purchase a special gift for yourself or engage in a fun activity after you reach a goal. Don’t forget the power of positive self-talk. ____20____. A. For instance, I did it! B. Build a Fear Ladder C. If you are afraid of social situations D. Face fears of a wide range of levels E. When you are on a certain social occasion F. It is important to practise on a regular basis G. I’ll show him and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the edges of two gray rocks, scraping (刮伤) my ankle. “Ouch!” I yelled. I tried to pull my foot out, but my shoe was stuck. I bent closer to the rock, and that’s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone attached to a shining gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand, and a few seconds later it was in my pocket. “Why do you look strange?” my brother asked once I’d freed my foot and caught up to him. “I don’t look strange,” I said. Sam looked at the sun. Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was excited, but I didn’t want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my business. “Ryan kept the paper napkins (餐巾) from the Andersons’ barbecue!” he had once announced. They were stamped “R.A.” Those are my initials! “Ryan saved the mini cola bottle from the carnival!” My family calls me their “little collector”. Some mean kids at school call me “trash (垃圾) girl”. Sam and I walked along the main street. Through the window of the candy shop I could see tubes of colourful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Verry special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924. Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster. The necklace looked different from the one I clutched (抓) in my pocket, I decided. Kurt Wenner: Pioneer of 3D pavement illusions 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据文章第二段中“Disappointed to find no class on the principles of classicism, the young artist came up with his own self-learning program which involved spending countless hours drawing from the magnificent art collection of the Vatican Museums and the Pantheon.(由于没有找到关于古典主义原理的课程,这位年轻的艺术家感到失望,于是他制定了自己的自学计划,包括花无数小时从梵蒂冈博物馆和万神殿的宏伟艺术品收藏中绘画。)” 根据文章第三段中“Every morning, Kurt would draw some of the world’s most famous works of art and sell them to tourists in order to support himself.(每天早上,Kurt都会画一些世界上最著名的艺术作品,然后卖给游客以维持生计。)” 根据文章第四段中“Inspired by a wide range of subjects, Kurt Wenner creates sophisticated pavement artworks that, admired from just the right angle, have an impressive depth that makes them look sculpted into the pavement.(Kurt Wenner受到各种主题的启发,创作出复杂精致的路面艺术作品,从合适的角度欣赏,这些作品具有令人印象深刻的深度,看起来像是雕刻在路面上。)”和以及第五段中“‘In photographs of my 3D images, the art can appear as ‘real’ as the audience.’(“在我的3D画像中,艺术可以像观众一样‘真实’。”)” 通读全文,结合第一段中“Kurt Wenner, a former NASA illustrator (绘图员) turned professional artist, specializes in chalk-drawn three-dimensional illusions that seem carved into the pavement rather than drawn on it.(Kurt Wenner曾是美国国家航空航天局的绘图员,后来成为职业艺术家,他专门从事粉笔绘制的三维错觉艺术,这种艺术看起来像是雕刻在路面上,而不是画上去的。)”和第四段最后一句“The American artist is generally regarded as the inventor of 3D pavement art and his works have fascinated audiences in over 30 countries around the world.(这位美国艺术家通常被认为是3D路面艺术的发明者,他的作品迷住了世界上30多个国家的观众。)” D选项“Kurt Wenner: Pioneer of 3D pavement illusions(Kurt Wenner: 3D路面错觉的先驱)”符合题意。故选D项。 C If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience - since the fatigue may indicate you’re at higher risk for developing a condition that can lead to dementia (痴呆), a new study has found. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据文章第一段“If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience (如果你在年老时发现自己在日常活动中犯困,你可能需要考虑的不仅仅是一种不便)”可知,此处提到了犯困的问题,紧接着下文提到了可能导致的风险,所以可推测划线词可能是“疲劳”的意思。 根据文章第三段“MCR is marked by slow walking speed and complaints of memory problems among older people who don’t already have dementia or a mobility disability. (MCR的特点是走路速度慢,在没有痴呆症或行动障碍的老年人中抱怨有记忆问题。)”可知,MCR的特点是行动缓慢。故选A项。 根据文章第四段“The study authors also collected yearly data on participants’ recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments. (研究作者还收集了参与者在评估前两周对睡眠质量和睡眠时间的年度回忆数据。)”可知,此处提到了关于睡眠的年度回忆数据,所以这项研究是通过年度采访收集参与者的睡眠数据的。故选C项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“If you’re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help (如果你已经有行动不便的问题,预防跌倒会有所帮助)”可知,行动不便的老年人应该预防跌倒。故选D项。 D Nostalgia (怀旧), or the experience of lovingly recalling and longing for your past, is seemingly fitting into our culture right now, with movie and TV screens especially expanded. 12. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design? D 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第二段“In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures.(在最近的研究中,中国科学院的研究人员要求研究参与者在观看怀旧图片(展示旧漫画、童年游戏或糖果的图片)时对热刺激的疼痛程度进行评分,而另一组人则观看现代图片)”可知,两组研究参与者在研究设计中所给的图片信息不同。 根据第三段“After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences.(在获得脑部扫描后,研究人员发现,观察激活童年记忆的图片与参与者报告的较弱的疼痛感有关。通过控制他们的不适,而不是减少不愉快的刺激,人们可以利用怀旧来重建他们的痛苦经历)”可知,怀旧心理能减轻人们的痛苦。故选C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段““What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.”(“怀旧是一种与他人联系在一起的感觉,”Swets说,他指出,许多研究中的线索都是为了让人们想起与家人和朋友的美好时光。“所以,那些更回避与他人建立亲密关系的人,或者更倾向于保持距离的人,不会得到同样的怀旧结果。”)”可知,Swets表明怀旧是一种与他人联系的感觉,而拒绝亲密关系的人不会得到同样的怀旧心理。故怀旧心理的效果是受人际关系影响的。故选C。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies.(参与研究的研究人员还计划在未来的研究中使用不同的年龄组来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响,而不是像老音乐和电影这样的常见怀旧线索)”可知,研究人员计划在未来的研究中接触不同年龄组的受试者来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响。 Facing your fears When we are afraid of something, it can be tempting to avoid it. I doubt _______ he is qualified for the position he wants to apply for. 故填whether/if。 45. I arrived at the studio on the_______(appoint) day. Dear Tim, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Tim, I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble learning Chinese lately, but don’t worry — with the right ways, it’ll get easier! First, practice speaking daily, like chatting with me in Chinese or following short videos. Second, read simple stories or news; they help with vocabulary and understanding. Also, write down new words in a notebook and review them often. I believe you’ll make great progress soon. If you have more questions, just ask me. 词汇积累 做某事有麻烦:have trouble doing→have difficulty doing 最近:lately→recently 写下:write down→take down 复习:review→go over 2. Second read simple stories or news; they help with vocabulary and understanding. Second, read simple stories or news, which help with vocabulary and understanding. 1】 I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble learning Chinese lately, but don’t worry — with the right ways, it’ll get easier!(运用了省略连接词that的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】If you have more questions, just ask me.(运用了if引导的条件状语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. I was moving as fast as I could, stepping carefully from rock to rock along the uneven jetty (防波堤). “Too slow, sister!” I heard my brother Sam yell as he jumped with ease. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago. Once home, I placed the necklace into my box, attracted by it. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting in a café across from Chrissy. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Once home, I placed the necklace into my box, attracted by it. I stared at the stone, so clean and polished. I liked it so much. But another voice whispered, “Could it be Chrissy’s? Was it her ‘verrry special’ necklace?” I struggled a while but I called the number on the poster. “Hello?” said a girl’s voice after one ring. “Hi,” I said, nervous. “Is this Chrissy?” “Yes.” ‘‘Um, my name is Ryan. I think I have something that belongs to you.” “My necklace?” Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting in a café across from Chrissy. We were drinking milk tea. “It was a gift from my mum,” she said, “before she got sick.” Chrissy looked down at the blue stone in her hand. “I’m really sorry,” I said. “Holding on to it somehow makes things a little better,” she said. “Do you know what I mean?” I thought about the mean kids at school and how holding on to beautiful things often makes me feel better. I nodded. “I think I do.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①专注:stare at/look intently at ②.说话:whisper/murmur ③.点头:nod/agree 情绪类 ①.挣扎:struggle a while/be torn to do ②.感觉好:make sb feel better/make sb feel delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1]. I struggled a while but I called the number on the poster.(由连词but连接两个简单句) [高分句型2]. I thought about the mean kids at school and how holding on to beautiful things often makes me feel better.
