In my opinion, the wheel (轮子) is the most important thing that human beings have ever invented. It might seem strange to say that something so simple-looking and so common could be so important. 1
Firstly, wheels influence almost every part of our lives. Wheels are used, for example, in clocks, machines and cars. If you visit just one factory, you will see how important wheels are. 2

Every time the holiday comes to an end, how many of you have burned the midnight oil to finish your homework over the last few days? 1 When you get home from school, do you start working on your homework right away?
It can be hard to be this responsible. 2 They’re called procrastinators (拖延症患者).
Procrastination is a common problem for many people. In fact, sometimes it just feels easier to wait until the last minute to do certain things. 3 You have to work harder and faster if you wait until there is little time left. This means your work will probably be of less quality (质量).
I myself am a bit of a procrastinator. But most of the time, I try to finish my work earlier rather than later. It just makes more sense—if I finish my work now, I’ll have more time to relax or work on other projects later. 4 But once I do, the work gets done quickly and with little stress.
Everyone procrastinates from time to time. It’s a natural thing to do. You don’t have to beat yourself up (过分自责) over it. 5 After all, we still need time to relax and take a break from our busy lives.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。

Passage 1
(23-24九年级上·河南省开封市·期中)
Today we take a look at the word “smart”. If someone says you are smart, what do they mean? Is it a good thing or something bad? 1 This is because the word “smart” has many meanings.
For example, someone could say you look smart or are dressed smartly. That means they like your physical appearance or what you are wearing.
But if something smarts, it can be unkind or hurtful, either physically or mentally (精神地). If you accidentally trip over a chair and fall down, you might shout, “Ow! That smarts!” Or if a friend says something that hurts your feelings, you can say you are smarting from the hurtful words. 2
If you are standing too close to a campfire, you could say your eyes are smarting from the smoke of the fire. Here the word “smarting” means feeling a sharp pain.
3 If someone is “smart as a whip”, they are able to think very quickly.
4 Some people are considered street-smart. They may not have a strong education. But they are good at dealing with people and problems in the real world. Other people might be book-smart. This means they have spent many years in school. But they may not be so smart when dealing with people or real-world problems.
And then there is a kind of “smart” that means to talk or behave disrespectfully and impolitely. If you say something disrespectful to your parents, they might say, “Don’t get smart with me!” Here, “smart” means you’re impolite and rude by saying something unkind.
The kind of smart can also be used as a verb. 5

D.However, different people have different ways of being smart.
E.In fact, maybe that person is no longer your friend.
【答案】1.C 2.E 3.B 4.D 5.A
【导语】本文介绍了单词smart的意思。

3.根据“If someone is ‘smart as a whip’, they are able to think very quickly.”可知,如果某人“smart as a whip”,意思是他们能够非常迅速地思考,因此smart表示聪明。B项“但是smart最常见的意思是聪明。”符合语境,故选B。

Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·河南省郑州市郑东新区外国语学校·期中)
In my opinion, the wheel (轮子) is the most important thing that human beings have ever invented. It might seem strange to say that something so simple-looking and so common could be so important. 1
Firstly, wheels influence almost every part of our lives. Wheels are used, for example, in clocks, machines and cars. If you visit just one factory, you will see how important wheels are. 2
Secondly, wheels play a great part in food production. Wheels are used to grind (磨碎) different kinds of corn into flour (面粉). 3 We also need wheels to transport (运输) the wheat (小麦). If we did not have the wheel, we would have much difficulty in food production.
Thirdly, our world would be completely different if we did not have the wheel for transport. Before the wheel was invented, people used to have to travel on foot or by riding on an animal. They didn't know where to put their heavy bags. 4 That is what we would be doing now if we did not have the wheel. Everything would take longer to do.
We would be back to the Stone Age if the clever ancient people had not invented the wheel. Our modern world would simply be impossible. 5
A.It took long to finish their journeys.
B.You will see wheels on almost every machine.
C.The wheel is surely the most important invention of all time.

These days, students and teachers have more access (使用权) to technology in schools. Many schools provide computer labs in which students can go online or use programs. 1
The biggest advantage of technology in the classroom today is that information is quickly available. If a teacher wanted to show a short video in a class 20 years ago, the teacher had to first locate (定位) the part he or she wanted to show on the video tape. 2 These days, a teacher can simply find the video on different apps.
Another advantage is the plenty of resources (资源) available to support students’ learning in the classroom. No longer is information only available through a teacher’s instruction or classroom books. 3 Technology can also help students with different learning styles study the same lesson by different methods.
With all the goods that technology brings into the classroom, there are some disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage to the use of technology may be lower quality of research and students’ work. There are so many resources available online. 4 But often, it is difficult for a student to know and choose which materials to trust.

(23-24九年级上·河南省河南师范大学附属中学·期中)
Making the world a better place may seem far from our children’s world. I used to think that only those people with much money could make it better and that I could do nothing to change the world at such a young age. 1
One Saturday morning, my mom took me to the place where she usually spent weekends as a volunteer. It’s a special place for families whose children have serious illnesses. 2
We put some gifts in the car and then started off. 3 We left the gifts at the door for the children to find when they got back. We went to the next house and gave a young boy in a wheelchair the gifts and he smiled widely. 4 At another house a bit later, I saw a little girl with a tube (管子) in her nose. Her brother was feeding her through the tube. I didn’t know what happened to these kids and I couldn’t imagine how unlucky they were.
That day, I realized being healthy was one of the luckiest things and helping others was one of the greatest things. I realized how much I loved the smiles on their faces and that I could make a difference in their lives. I myself am a bit of a procrastinator. But most of the time, I try to finish my work earlier rather than later. It just makes more sense—if I finish my work now, I’ll have more time to relax or work on other projects later. 4 But once I do, the work gets done quickly and with little stress.

If sad feelings go on for too long, it’s called depression (抑郁症). Children who have depression may not know it. Often, it’s a parent or a teacher who notices changes in children’s behavior.
When depression happens, it’s very important for children to receive treatment. 3 Sometimes treatment includes talking to someone who knows all about depression. Sometimes it means taking medicine. 4

Many people are interested in star signs. Some people believe that some star signs get along better with each other than other star signs.
Perhaps we should first start with those star signs that are incompatible (合不来的). 1 It’s believed that both of them are leaders. Aries is energetic and is not compatible with Leo be- cause Leo is strong and confident. Also, Pisces and Taurus are not a good pair. 2
Perhaps the best choice of friend for Taurus is Capricorn. Taurus can be stubborn and Capri-corn is patient and would be prepared to wait for Taurus to change his or her mind. Aries should get to know Pisces. 3 They are a good match. Leo would be well matched with Libra. Leo likes to give gifts and Libra likes beautiful things.
The perfect pair is Libra and Scorpio. Libra does not like to argue and loves peace. 4 Sagittarius and Gemini are also a perfect match. Sagittarius loves to travel and Gemini loves to discover (发现) new things. Sagittarius has a good sense of humour and will enjoy listening to Gemini talk.
Virgo and Aquarius are a good match too. 5 Aquarius has many friends but Virgo worries a lot about meeting a lot of people.

This kind of AI is very useful, but Hawking was worried about the possibility of making machines that can be smarter than humans. 3 Many TV shows and films show some big killer machines that are far cleverer than us. “Humans can’t compete because of their slow biological evolution (进化), and would even be superseded (取代),” said Hawking.
