When I saw Ronny for the first time, he looked like other kids in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as a Reading Mum. However, he usually arrived at school wearing old clothes.
On the day when it was Ronny’s turn to read, he sat very close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he tried to speak out “Bud the Sub”. It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his difficulty with the alphabet (字母).
The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress, but he was still below the level of the grade. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award (颁奖) ceremony. I had gifts and certificates (证书) for everyone. It took me a while to think about which Ronny fit; I believed the gift could cheer him up. I finally decided on “The Most Progressive Reader”. I showed his certificate and a book.
A few days later, I saw Ronny reading the book when I went back to the school. His teacher said, “He hasn’t put that book down. That’s the first book he’s ever owned.”
Fighting back tears (眼泪), I came near Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He nodded. And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more smoothly than I’d ever thought. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said, “Good book.”

“I agree. So why don’t we have a rest?” the short one said.
Then they stopped at their places silently.
When Henry woke up in the morning, he was shocked to see the sunlight. He quickly looked at the clock and found it was still two o’clock. Not surprisingly, he was late for school.
Henry complained (抱怨) about the clock all day. He was so angry that he threw the clock into an old box after he got home. The two hands were afraid, so they started to work again. Now they knew it was better to do something than to do nothing

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them.
The second kind of friend could also be called “guest friends”. They are not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. They will correct you when you’ re wrong, and though they may not be perfect, they at least will always care about you, and can not do anything bad to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

B. we miss our pest friends when we’ re not with them
C. a best friend can not do anything bad to you
D. a “pest friend” will never become your best friend
49. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
E
Do you find it hard to say “no” when someone asks you for help? If your answer is “yes”, you may be a “people-pleaser”. If you always try to make others happy but forget about your own feelings, you’ll feel stressed. Luckily, you can do some things to stop being a people-pleaser.
To start with, you need to know what you can and can’t do. Be clear about what you are willing to do. When someone asks you for help, you can tell him or her you only have a little time. You can also say you need some time to think about it. Then ask yourself: Do you really want to do this? How much time will it take? If you take some time to think, you can decide whether you want to do it and have the time for it. Don’t spend too much time on things that make you unhappy.
It’s not easy to change quickly so start by taking small steps. You may, for example, send a message to say “no”. Then, try to say “no” face to face. Practice saying “no” in different places, like when you meet a salesperson or order food at a restaurant.
Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you can’t be kind or help others. You can still do good things, but on your own situations.
50. A “people-pleaser” is someone who ______.
A. always says “no” to others B. finds it hard to say “no” to others
C. never helps other people D. only cares about their own feelings
51. Always trying to make others happy without thinking about your own feelings can make you ______.
A. popular B. successful C. stressed D. happy
52. According to the passage, what can people do to stop being a people-pleaser?
a. Know what you can and can’t do.
b. Think about it first when someone asks you for help.
c. Talk to yourself to feel more relaxed.
d. Start by taking small steps.
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bed

A. pest friends B. guest friends C. best friends D. not friends

It’s not easy to change quickly, so start by taking small steps.
A. always says “no” to others B. finds it hard to say “no” to others

c. Talk to yourself to feel more relaxed.
