【原文】When I received the question for this paper, I wasn’t sure what to say about my biggest inspiration. At first, I thought of inspiring people, places, or periods. But in the end, I realized my biggest source of inspiration is my creative process. When I was a kid, my family took me to museums. Honestly, I didn’t understand the point. But then, while walking near my home, I saw this incredible sunset. The colors, the way the sky changed, it was like magic. At that moment, I knew I had to put it on paper.
Now, I’m always on the hunt for inspiration. I love painting people, natural landscapes, and city scenes. But the thing that gets my creative process going is abstract art. It’s like the art of feelings.
I do a bit of painting in school, and sometimes people hire me to paint the walls of offices or studios. But I most frequently paint during the sunrise hours. There’s something magical about watching the world wake up while I’m capturing it on paper. I’m in my creative zone, making ordinary moments extraordinary (不平常的).

In 1999, Giuliana Furci, founder and founding director of the Fungi (真菌) Foundation, developed a deep interest in fungi. They were everywhere, and the 20-year-old took particular joy in the variety of mushrooms: small and button-shaped; tall and umbrella-like; round with red caps topped with white flakes. Some were commonly found in people’s diets, for they were rich in nutrients such as vitamin, fiber, minerals and protein.
But Furci also quickly realized that these fungi went largely ignored in Chile, where there were few guidebooks and an almost total lack of policies and resources to protect them from overharvesting and other human activities. Determined to correct this, Furci wrote a field guide and set up the Fungi Foundation — a nonprofit dedicated to fungi conservation. In her guide, special attention went to the role of fungi in the ecosystem.
“Life on the planet wouldn’t exist without fungi,” said Greg Mueller, a mushroom conservation expert. “Because of their relationship with forests and trees, we can’t survive without fungi. In terms of the health of the planet, they’re incredibly important to humans and the overall ecosystem.” Fungi can break down plants and animals, thus cycling nutrients and increasing their availability in the soil. They are also important contributors to the soil carbon stock through the same process. What’s more, fungi have been found to help degrade (降解) various pollutants, such as plastic. And mycelium (菌丝体), which is the root structure of mushrooms, is now being used to replace unsustainable materials, such as plastic and animal-based products.
Because of these, exploration of fungi was expanded at a faster pace. However, some were already listed as critically endangered. In 2010, Furci took an even bigger step — with other environmental nonprofits, she put forward a proposal for the government to systematically assess how large new developments such as housing, dams, and highways affect fungi. In 2012, a law was passed and Chile became the first country in the world to protect fungi by law.
24. Why did Furci establish the Fungi Foundation?
A. To promote the consumption of edible fungi.
B. To draw attention to fungi conservation.
C. To study the variety of mushrooms in Chile.
D. To create more jobs related to fungi research.
25. What do we know about fungi from Paragraph 3?
A. They are mainly used to produce plastic alternatives.
B. They can only survive in forests and on trees.
C. They play a key role in maintaining ecological balance.
D. They are the most nutrient-rich organisms on earth.
26. What was the result of Furci’s proposal in 2010?
A. Chile became the first country to study fungi systematically.
B. A law to protect fungi was passed in Chile two years later.
C. Over-harvesting of fungi in Chile was completely banned.
D. New developments in Chile were stopped to protect fungi.
27. Which of the following best describes Furci?
A. Ambitious and cautious. B. Stubborn and determined.
C. Passionate and committed. D. Knowledgeable but indifferent.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. B 27. C

C
It's a classic complaint in relationships, especially romantic ones: "She said she was okay with me forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related?"
The answer is YES. Communication is more than words. It's how those words are said, the tone, the order, even the choice of a particular word. It's multi-dimensional, as explored by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber in Meaning and Relevance. Consider the following example: Peter got angry and Mary left; Mary left and Peter got angry. Though identical in words, their meanings differ completely. The first one may have us thinking: Wow, Peter must get angry often if Mary leaves. The second sentence suggests that Peter wants more from Mary. Same words — a totally different context.
Human language is not a code (编码). True codes have a one-to-one relationship with meaning. One sound, one definition. This is what we see with animals. Wilson and Sperber explain that "coded communication works best when emitter and receiver share exactly the same code." Not so for humans. We communicate more than the definitions of our words would suggest. This is inferential communication, and it means that we understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.
Irony (反语) is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words. It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party, "That was fun", she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying "ironically" that the party was boring. Rather, she is expressing an emotion. Three words replace paragraphs, showcasing language's efficiency.
Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two unique abilities of humans: language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer meaning.
28. What does the complaint in Paragraph 1 mainly indicate?
A. The inconsistence between words and meaning.
B. The misinterpretation of emotional expressions.
C. The crucial role of non-verbal communication.
D. The underlying messages in casual remarks.
29. What may make human language different from true codes?
A. The context included in understanding meanings.
B. The definitions made by words in communication.
C. The coded communication between emitter and receiver.
D. The fixed correspondence between words and meanings.
30. What does the underlined word “emitter” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Passive observer. B. Message receiver.
C. Code translator. D. Message sender.
31. What does the author suggest in communication?
A. Stating the opposite directly.
B. Translating word by word.
C. Reading beyond the words.
D. Simplifying messages to single meanings.
【答案】28. A 29. A 30. D 31. C

Obviously, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding quickly. But industry experts are worried because AI machines are energy-intensive. Therefore, many big companies are even considering using alternative energy to meet their AI needs.
“The average electricity consumption of ChatGPT service in early 2023 was 564 MWh per day, equal to the total daily electricity usage of 18,000 families in the United States,” the researchers mentioned in a study. They have proposed a new algorithm (算法) that has the potential to reduce the amount of energy an AI machine requires to carry out computation (计算). “Reducing the amount of computation needed by neural networks is the key to reduce both energy consumption and inference speed for large-scale AI models,” stated the BitEnergy AI researchers.
The new method, known as Linear-Complexity Multiplication (线性复杂度乘法) (L-Mul),optimizes the mathematical operations that run AI. For context, AI models rely heavily on complex calculations, particularly floating-point multiplications (浮点数乘法), which are essential for handling the vast amounts of data they process. These calculations, while precise, are very energy-intensive. According to the researchers, applying L-Mul to tensor (张量) processing hardware can significantly reduce energy costs associated with element-wise floating point tensor multiplications and dot products. L-Mul replaces the energy-intensive multiplications with simpler integer additions (整数加法). By breaking down the complex multiplications into more manageable steps, it significantly reduces the energy required for computations.
“Since multiplying floating point numbers requires substantially higher energy compared to integer addition operations, applying the L-Mul operation in tensor processing hardware can potentially reduce 95% energy cost by element-wise floating point tensor multiplications and 80%energy cost of dot products,” highlighted the study.
L-Mul offers performance advantages. Integer additions are faster than floating-point multiplications, leading to quicker computations. Furthermore, the researchers suggest that L-Mul maintains the accuracy of AI models. L-Mul is highly in harmony with transformer-based models, the architecture behind popular AI systems like ChatGPT. These models rely on an “attention mechanism” to process and understand relationships within data.
However the widespread adoption of L-Mul faces some barriers. Currently, the technique requires specialized hardware that is not yet readily available. BitEnergy AI is actively developing this hardware and creating programming interfaces to facilitate its integration into existing AI systems.
“To unlock the full potential of our proposed method, we will carry out the L-Mul and LMatmul kernel algorithms on hardware level and develop programming APIs for high-level model design,” the study concluded.
32. Why does the author mention some numbers in Paragraph 2?
A. To prove AI machines are energy-intensive.
B. To clarify the necessity of creating a new algorithm.
C. To show the popularity of artificial intelligence.
D. To explain why the United States faces electricity shortage.
33. How does Linear-Complexity Multiplication lessen energy consumption?
A. By raising the precision of AI calculations. B. By developing specialized hardware.
C. By expanding data processing capacity. D. By changing the way of calculations.
34. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. How L-Mul works to cut AI energy use.
B. Why floating-point multiplications are energy-intensive.
C. What tensor processing hardware is used for.
D. How AI models process large amounts of data.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Dilemma Faced by Large-Scale AI Models.
B. The Rise of AI: Challenges and Opportunities.
C. Will L-Mul Replace the Energy-intensive Multiplications?
D. L-Mul: A New Breakthrough in Reducing AI Energy Consumption.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. D

推理判断题。根据第二段中的““The average electricity consumption of ChatGPT service in early 2023 was 564 MWh per day, equal to the total daily electricity usage of 18,000 families in the United States,” the researchers mentioned in a study. (研究人员在一项研究中提到:“2023 年初,ChatGPT服务的平均日耗电量为564兆瓦时,相当于美国1.8万个家庭的每日总用电量。”)”以及“They have proposed a new algorithm (算法) that has the potential to reduce the amount of energy an AI machine requires to carry out computation (计算). (他们提出了一种新算法,有可能减少人工智能机器进行计算所需的能量。)”可知,作者在第二段提到一些数字是为了说明创建新算法的必要性。故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“L-Mul replaces the energy-intensive multiplications with simpler integer additions (整数加法). By breaking down the complex multiplications into more manageable steps, it significantly reduces the energy required for computations. (L-Mul用更简单的整数加法取代了高能耗的乘法。通过将复杂的乘法分解为更易于处理的步骤,它显著减少了计算所需的能量。)”可知,线性复杂度乘法通过改变计算方式来降低能耗。故选D项。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The new method, known as Linear-Complexity Multiplication (线性复杂度乘法) (L-Mul),optimizes the mathematical operations that run AI. 故选A项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“They have proposed a new algorithm (算法) that has the potential to reduce the amount of energy an AI machine requires to carry out computation (计算). 第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This was because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

That taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para.1 Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I hastily and quickly glued together what I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. Several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed constructions. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
Para.2 That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but also I felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.

C Over-harvesting of fungi in Chile was completely banned.
D. New developments in Chile were stopped to protect fungi.
27. Which of the following best describes Furci?
A. Ambitious and cautious. B. Stubborn and determined.
C. Passionate and committed. D. Knowledgeable but indifferent.

However, the widespread adoption of L-Mul faces some barriers.
