Looking down at the road,Anna picked up a toad (and carefully placed it in a bucket
)More and more toads were crossing the road,so Anna had to move swiftly. The toads were
naturally seeking out a nearby lake in reproducing season, but between them and the water was a road
with traffic.
Anna is one of the volunteers for Froglife,a charity that carries out toad protection to help the
creatures make it safely to the other side of the road."The toads come down from the hills and woods
where they've spent the winter and need to get to their egg-laying grounds,"says Anna,53,a housing
support worker.
"I've always liked frogs ever since I was little when I collected frog decorations.Doing something
practical to help these animals now is very special. The numbers of frogs and toads have sharply
declined, and I want to do everything I can for them.I love helping these little creatures.
Froglife is devoted to conserving amphibian and reptile(爬行动物)species and their habitats.
Anna first became involved when she saw an advert in a local newspaper and has now been part of the
toad protection in Bath for the past 18 years.
"When I first started,I thought I would be standing in the road stopping traffic so the toads could
cross the road in a line,"she explains."But I found I had to pick them up and put them in a bucket
because it's a long and winding road and the toads can get confused."
Although the roads are closed off for six weeks as egg-laying season approaches, drivers who need to
reach their homes are allowed on them."It can be a bit dangerous but we work in pairs, with a powerful
flashlight,says Anna.
"I've made some lovely friends, who I'd never have met otherwise, from being involved in the
protection.Knowing I've helped the little animals is so rewarding."

Neurons(抻经元)have been discovered in mice that help their brains track and recover from sleep
debt.If a similar pathway exists in humans,it could help treatments for sleep disorders.
To find out more about how the brain tracks sleep loss,Mark Wu at Johns Hopkins University in
Maryland and his colleagues mapped brain pathways that are involved in sleep in mice by putting a tracer
(示踪剂)into 11 brain areas known to induce sleep.
The tracer, which travels from neurons receiving signals to those sending them, revealed 22 regions
with connections to at least four sleep-promoting areas of the total 11.
The researchers focused on 11 previously unidentified regions.Using a technique called
chemogenetics, they gave mice specialized drugs that activate particular parts of their brains. They
divided the mice into 11 groups of three to four individuals, activating a different area in each group.
A region called the thalamic nucleus reuniens (TNR)seemed to be key. When neurons in this area
were stimulated, the mice experienced the greatest increase in non-rapid eye movement(REM)sleep-
about twice the amount as mice that weren't stimulated. However,it took several hours for the animals to
fall asleep after stimulation, during which they seemed to prepare for rest, for example,by making their
nests soft. This suggests these neurons aren't an on-and-off switch for sleep, but instead induce
sleepiness. In another test, deactivating these neurons in six mice whose sleep was deprived (
made them less sleepy.
"The findings suggest this brain region drives sleepiness and starts restorative sleep after sleep
loss,"says Wu.Developing therapies()that target these neurons could lead to new treatments for
hypersomnia,a sleep condition featuring more than enough sleepiness after rest.
28.What was the aim of Mark Wu's team's research?
A.To cure sleep problems in mice.
B.To learn how the brain monitors sleep loss.
C.To check if a new drug helps mice sleep better.
D.To find similarities between human and mouse sleep.
29.What does the underlined word "induce"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Reduce.
B.Prevent.
C.Observe.
D.Cause.
30.What can be known about the TNR?
A.It directly controls when sleep starts or stops.
B.Stimulating it makes mice go to sleep right away.
C.Stimulating it leads to a big rise in non-REM sleep.
D.Deactivating it makes sleepy mice feel more lively.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The potential application of the finding.
B.The process of testing sleep recovery in mice.
C.The causes of common sleep disorders in humans.
D.The differences between human and mouse sleep.

Picture you're sitting in your living room, windows open. What do you hear? The sound of a flowing
river? The soft voice of human chatter in a cafe?A soundscape is your aural (environment-
everything you can hear around you,and researchers say the soundscape can influence your well-being.
In times gone by,soundscapes would've consisted of the sounds of nature, such as birdcall and the
sound of waves. The reality of human life in the 21st Century means that air travel, construction and
traffic noises are now in the mix,and agricultural noise means that not even rural life is safe.Noise
pollution can lead to heightened stress levels, damaged mental function and higher risk of heart disease
in humans, according to an article published by the UK Parliament called "The effects of artificial light
and noise on human health".Not only that,it can also affect the behavior and life cycles of species
which rely on sound.
So,what can be done?Urban design is one trick. In Barcelona in Spain, urban planners designed
"superblocks",where traffic goes around big groups of buildings and the inner streets are for pedestrians
()creating space for people and wildlife that is free from sounds of cars and motorbikes. In a
2025 article published in BMC Public Health, people in these areas reported an improvement in well-
being, quality of sleep and reduction in noise.
Other techniques include tree buffers ()where trees are planted in urban areas to absorb
sound energy. In the Netherlands, they have created earth banks next to Schiphol airport to absorb noise
from the runways and protect residents in the surrounding areas. And it turns out that they make
excellent sound barriers, particularly if the trees are large, thick and evergreen.
When we think about improving our environment,it's likely that your mind jumps to reducing litter
and air pollution. But reducing noise pollution is also important,to create a soundscape that works for
everyone-people and wildlife.
32.What did soundscapes mainly consist of in the past?
A.Traffic and construction noises.
B.Agricultural noises in rural areas.
C.Natural sounds like birdcall and waves.D.Sounds from cafes and human chatter.
33.What is the purpose of Barcelona's "superblocks"?
A.To protect historical buildings.
B.To increase green spaces in cities
C.To promote the use of public transport.
D.To separate pedestrians from traffic noise.
34.Why are evergreen trees used as sound barriers?
A.They provide habitats for urban wildlife.
B.They can take in large amounts of sound.
C.They are more attractive than other plants.
D.They grow quickly and are easy to maintain
35.What can we infer about noise pollution from the last paragraph?
A.It greatly disturbs people's mind peace.
B.It is the key to environmental improvement.
C.It is often ignored in environmental protection.
D.It affects the environment more than air pollution.

Ms.Clara's grocery store is a small, sunlit space with wooden floors and shelves. There's a
handwritten sign by the register:"Trust runs this store-pay later if you need to."I started helping her
after school last month, and soon learned that sign wasn't just words.
One rainy evening,a woman burst in,her raincoat dripping (onto the floor. She grabbed a
bag of rice and a carton of eggs, and then patted her pockets with a panicked look."I left my wallet at
home,"she said,voice tight."Luna-my name's Luna.I live on Green Street,two blocks over.I'll
be back tomorrow,I promise.My mom's waiting for dinner."Ms.Clara wrapped the eggs carefully."Go
on,dear.The rain won't wait."As Luna hurried out,I noticed her black umbrella-its handle
wrapped in blue tape-standing against the pickle jar ()I called out,but she was already gone.
The next day,the umbrella still stood by the jar,its fabric drying into wrinkled waves.Luna didn't
show.Another such day passed. My chest felt heavy.I kept looking at the door, then at the umbrella.
"Maybe she forgot?"I said.Ms.Clara just wiped the counter and said,"Everyone gets busy.Let's give
her time."But I found myself checking the umbrella more, wondering if it was just a trick-leave
something cheap to earn trust, and then disappear.
On the third day,the umbrella had become a silent topic."Ms.Clara,that umbrella's probably all
we'll get,"I said.I should've made her leave her phone number."What if she never comes?"I asked
Ms.Clara,who was arranging oranges.She looked up,her eyes soft."Then we'll know.But if she
does?We'll know she's worth trusting.That umbrella's not a trick-it's a reminder.Some people's

Ms.Clara's hand. “I'm so sorry for delay,” she said, voice tight. “Mom had a sudden stroke, and I have been with
her in hospital.” “Don't worry about it,” Ms.Clara patted Luna on the shoulder with sympathy and picked up the
umbrella to return it. Luna shook her head, insisting Ms. Clara keep it. She said it was a birthday gift from her mom
and now a thankyou for being trusted that night. Ms. Clara agreed, smiling.
Ms.Clara turned with the umbrella and hung it beside the door as a trust reminder. “It'll be a reminder,” she
said, “that trust is a promise worth keeping.” Sunlight streamed in, making the umbrella's fabric glow. It swung
softly when the door opened, like a quiet story. I stared at it, feeling the weight in my chest lift. I understood then:
Trust isn't about speed, but faith in people's goodness. That umbrella, once a doubt, now proved kindness and
promises last. Some debts, I learned, are paid with belief.

Text 1
M: Lily, I asked you to print 100 copies of the report — one for each person attending the presentation. But you
only printed 72 copies.
W: Sorry, sir. I'll be more careful with my work in the future.
Text 2
M: Have you thought about what you'd like to do when you leave school, Anna? You're good at biology, so perhaps
something related to medicine?
W: Yeah, maybe a scientist, discovering new medicine to help people.
Text 3
M: Amy, my car won't start. I need to get it repaired, so I won't be able to drive you to the amusement park.
W: That's OK. Rachel should still have room in her car. I'm sure I can ride with her instead. I'll ask her anyway.
Text 4
W: Would you like to see the new adventure movie at 6:30? There's also a 9 o'clock screening, which is the final
one today.
M: My shift doesn't finish until 7:30, so I can make it to the last showing tonight.
Text 5
W: I like this bag, but I'm not sure if there's enough space inside for my school stuff, like books, notebooks and my
laptop.
M: Well, take a look — the inside is quite big. It's a bestseller in our store.
Text 6
M: Have you decided what you are going to do after leaving school?
W: Well, I've been chatting with my parents. My dad wants me to be a doctor like him! But I'm not sure it's for me.
M: Yes. It's a really responsible job and to be honest I hate the sight of blood. So what did you tell him?
W: I've decided to take a gap year and do voluntary work in a clinic in South Africa. That will help me make up my
mind if it's the job for me!
Text 7
M: Long flight ahead, huh? San Francisco to Los Angeles. Always feels longer than it should be.
W: I know what you mean! I'm visiting my brother in Los Angeles, so the flight is worth it.
M: Nice. I live in Los Angeles, actually. Just coming back from a business meeting in San Francisco.
W: So, are you from Los Angeles originally?
M: No, I was born and raised in New York, but I moved to Los Angeles for work a few years ago. I work in the IT
industry. It's fastpaced, but I love it. How about you?
W: I'm a fashion designer in San Francisco. I have my own shop. I love visiting art galleries to find inspiration for
my designs.
M: You know, this flight doesn't feel long with good conversation. I'm glad we are sitting next to each other.
W: Same here. Maybe we can grab a coffee or explore an art exhibition together sometime.
Text 8
M: What inspired you to start your business?
W: I've always enjoyed painting, but ten years ago, I had an illness. My right hand couldn't move, which I used to
paint. I thought I would never be able to paint again but I slowly got better. Later, a friend asked me to do
illustrations for her book, which inspired me to start painting again.
M: How are you now?
W: Much better. I'm fully recovered now and I'm selling my handpainted works on NotOnTheHighStreet.com. I'm

so happy that people like what I do.
M: How does the place where you live influence you?
W: My family moved to the Isle of Wight seven years ago, which is when I started painting at home. I'm inspired
by the island, and my customers say my paintings make them feel like they're on the island because they love the
scenery.
Text 9
W: How did the job interview go, Dan?
M: It was great. But the thing is, I start in two weeks and I don't have anything to wear. The job involves meeting
important clients.
W: It seems like you need some new clothes.
M: I know. But I'm on a tight budget. I saw a suit on sale yesterday for 40% off, so I'll save almost $100 if I buy
that. I admit that suit was a little cheaplooking.
W: Didn't you have to wear a suit for the job interview?
M: Well, it was an online interview, so I just wore a jacket from an old suit. The shirt and tie I was wearing were
borrowed from my roommate. I was wearing baggy sweatpants under my desk!
W: You're kidding me! Do you still have the pants to go with that jacket?
M: Yeah, I actually have two old suits with perfectly good jackets but my pants are completely worn out at the
knees.
W: It sounds like you can start your sewing lessons on those pants! Then you'll have two suits for very little money!

A few days later, when I almost forgot that, Luna turned up.
Ms. Clara turned with the umbrella and hung it beside the door as a trust reminder.
A few days later, when I almost forgot that, Luna turned up.
Clara,Ms.
Ms. Clara turned with the umbrella and hung it beside the door as a trust reminder.
