Nodding your head usually means “yes.” But in Bulgaria (保加利亚) and Greece, nodding up and down means “no.”
In the West, people like to look at each other when they talk. Strong eye contact is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab (阿拉伯的) countries. Finns (芬兰人) and Japanese are embarrassed (尴尬的) when others keep staring at them during a talk. They only make eye contact at the start of a discussion.
Tapping (轻敲) your nose means “secret” in England. In Italy, the same gesture means “be careful.”
In many cultures, like Italy and the U.S., people use their arms freely when talking. They often wave their arms around. Northern Europeans don’t like gesturing with their arms. They think it shows insincerity (不真诚) and is too dramatic (戏剧化的).

We’re often told to “eat a rainbow”, and so we believe that the more colours a food has, the better it is. In fact, some white vegetables, such as cauliflower (菜花), mushrooms (蘑菇) and onions, can offer us what we need.
As far as we know, they are rich in umami (鲜味), the fifth basic taste after sweet, salty, bitter and sour. In a word, all these white vegetables can help simple dishes come alive.
Some white vegetables are good medicine actually. Garlic, for example, is able to help hair grow, and keep colds and flu (流感) away. Julia Child said, “I cannot imagine a world without onions, so I always put slices of onion while cooking for my customers.” And it is really like that: an onion on our plate can help us enjoy our life with a lower risk of cancer.

Emergencies don’t happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help first. No one wants to spend time looking up the phone numbers.
In 1968, the United States government wanted one number that people could call for emergencies. They decided that 911 was easy to remember and people could dial it quickly. The very first 911 call was made on February 16, 1968, in Alabama. Today, 911 is used for emergencies in most parts of the United States and many parts of Canada.
Other countries may use other numbers. In Great Britain, it’s 999. If you’re not sure which emergency number is used in your area, check your phone book.
When to call
Never call 911 as a joke or just to see what might happen. The only time you should call 911 is when a person is in danger right now! So call when there is a fire, a car accident, or sudden sickness, etc.
When in an emergency call
When you dial the 911 operator, it’s always OK to give out your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what’s happening. What happened? Where are you?
Don’t hang up!
If you have to call 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it’s OK to do so. In this way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast.
A dog named Faith dialed 911 when her owner who was in a wheelchair fell and needed help. She had been taught to use a speed dial function.
26. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How to call 911 properly.
B. The origin (起源) and usage of emergency numbers.
C. The importance of not misusing emergency numbers.
D. A dog’s amazing act of dialing 911.
27. According to the passage, which of the following situations is NOT a proper time to call 911?
A. A house is on fire. B. A person has a heart-attack suddenly.
C. Someone wants to know the time. D. A car hits a pedestrian seriously.
28. When making a 911 call, you are advised to do all the following EXCEPT (除了) ________.
A. speak slowly
B. speak clearly
C. hang up immediately after reporting the incident
D. answer the operator’s questions like “Where are you?”
29. Why did the United States government choose 911 as the emergency number?
A. It was the most commonly used number at that time.
B. It was suggested by the public.
C. It was easy for people to remember and dial.
D. It was a number with special meaning.
30. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. 911 is the only emergency number used in North America.
B. You can call 911 whenever you want to test if it works.

D. A dog named Faith dialed 911 without any training.

When in an emergency call
When you dial the 911 operator, it’s always OK to give out your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what’s happening. What happened? Where are you?
Don’t hang up!
If you have to call 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it’s OK to do so. In this way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast.
