At our library, we’re always looking for engaging ways to connect young readers with our collections — especially during the summer. This year, our Youth Services team brought a classic game to life with a scavenger hunt (寻宝游戏) program. This Scavenger Hunt: Level Up Your Reading event connects directly to our Summer Reading Program’s theme: Level Up!
Our goal is to create an experience that is both fun and accessible. We design it to include opportunities for exploration and discovery. We created a self-paced, interactive program activity that encourages kids to navigate our library space and learn more about what we offer. It is available throughout the entire month of June, giving families enough time to join the fun on their own schedule.
We offer two distinct levels to better serve a wide age range:
Level 1 (Preschool-Grade 2) :
Younger children search for amusing game characters in the Youth Services Department. This level uses colorful markers to stimulate curiosity without requiring reading skills. Characters are hidden near collections like Playaways and Binge Boxes, helping kids and caregivers discover new areas.
Level 2 (Grades 3-6) :
Older children participate in a more advanced version of the scavenger hunt. They not only. locate each character but also answer a challenge question at every stop. These questions help introduce them to different library collections like world languages, nonfiction, and graphic novels. This promotes deeper engagement and informal learning.
The scavenger hunt helps families explore more of what the library has to offer. Kids and caregivers turn it into a shared experience filled with curiosity and conversation.
1. What is the main purpose of the scavenger hunt?
A. To promote summer reading. B. To raise funds for the library.
C. To emphasize service sense. D. To organize competitive games.
2. Which of the following best describes the library’s approach to the scavenger hunt?
A. Competitive and challenging. B. Teacher-led and structured.
C. Self-guided and family-friendly. D. Technology-driven and entertaining.
3. What distinguishes Level 2 from Level 1?
A. The task of finding characters. B. The focus on formal learning.
C. The involvement of caregivers. D. The demand for reading abilities.

As a hospital-based physician, I often treat patients with severe chronic (慢性的) illnesses. These conditions not only consume their physical energy but also disconnect them from the activities that make them feel alive. Such was the case with Mr. T., a 67-year-old man I recently cared for at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland, California.
“Living with kidney (肾) failure is exhausting,” he told me. “My life moves around dialysis (透析) , and some days I wonder if I can keep going.” His words carried weight — he had been admitted to the hospital last month with shortness of breath after missing one of his three-times-a-week dialysis sessions.
Long-term health struggles often lead to the state of feeling alone, creating a cycle that worsens both physical health and quality of life. For years, I've sought to address this through what I call “Prescriptions for Health and Happiness” — written orders for simple joys like helping others, writing thank-you notes, singing in the shower, or walking in nature.
After reading a new book by journalist Julia Hotz The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, and Belonging, I believe more and more in the idea that our social activities and community engagement are crucial for our health—not only for my patients but also for all of us.
As for Mr. T., I posed a question central to this approach: “We've talked about your medical challenges, but now I want to know: What brings you joy? ” Emphasizing that pursuing passions is key to wellness, I encouraged him to reconnect with the world. He shared, “I've always loved music. ” When I suggested joining a choir, his eyes lit up: “I used to sing all the time! The idea of starting again…that's actually exciting. ”
I, too, was excited by that patient visit and excited later that week when I had the opportunity to talk to Julia Hotz about her book on the social cure movement and how it is growing and evolving around the world.
4. What caused Mr. T.'s being in hospital last month?
A. Skipping a dialysis session. B. Refusing regular dialysis.
C. Missing an exercise session. D. Living with kidney failure.
5. Why does the author advocate “Prescriptions for Health and Happiness”?
A. To encourage physical exercise. B. To reduce reliance on medicine.
C. To replace old medical treatment. D. To address patients’ emotional needs.
6. How would Mr. T.'s condition most probably change after joining the choir?
A. He fully recovered from his illness. B. He regained a sense of purpose in life.
C. He didn't need dialysis to sustain life. D. He developed a new career in music.
7. What can we learn about the social cure movement?
A. It can cure severe illnesses. B. It has changed clinical methods.
C. It is gaining recognition globally. D. It is better than hospital treatment.
A 5. D 6. B 7. C

The world is full of the sounds of animals communicating with each other: birds singing, crickets chirping, whales singing songs in the deep. Until now animal “language” has been a mystery to humanity. But now, all that may change. As AI technology and machine learning develop into new fields and areas, scientists are using it to interpret animal language.
More than 50 years ago researchers recorded the beautiful songs of humpback whales (座头鲸) and shared them with the world, which opened up a whole new field of study: whale communication. As the technology advanced, so did the field.
Scientific American reports that there is the Earth Species Project: a team of AI scientists, biologists, and conservationists who are building a machine-learning model that uses data from a wide range of animals to figure out what their actions and sounds mean. In addition, there are projects that focus on only one particular species such as the Project Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) which hopes to translate the language of sperm whales using AI.
CETI hopes that if humans can understand what’s going on inside whales’ minds—and, eventually, the minds of other animals—it might inspire greater conservation measures. The group has good reason to believe it could. In the 1960s, when researchers discovered that humpback whales sing to each other, for instance, their work led to the wildly successful Save the Whales campaign. Seriously threatened for decades, humpback and gray whale populations started to recover.
Marine biologists and computer scientists worked together to analyze the most comprehensive database of whale sounds. They did a study to see if they could design a tailored machine learning program capable of spotting familiar sequences within these interactions, much as humans have recognizable conversational patterns. The result was a new kind of proceasing model able to anticipate what some whales might communicate next.
This kind of work isn’t limited to whales. Across the natural world, scientists are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for help to understand the lives of animals.
8. How does the author present the issue of animal language?
A By quoting an expert. B. By giving examples.
C. By defining a concept. D. By providing statistics.
9. What does the author try to explain by mentioning the discovery in the 1960s?
A. Whale populations continue to grow. B. The government supports whale study.
C. Research contributes to decision-making. D. Scientific study helps protective measures.
10. What is one of the researchers’ findings about whale communication?
A. Its content can be predicted. B. It follows traditional patterns.
C. Its frequency can be spotted. D. It has been copied by humans.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. The AI Tools in Biological Research B. The Mystery of Whale Communication
C. Using AI to Interpret Animal Language D. The Ways of Translating Animal Language
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据文章第一段“The world is full of the sounds of animals communicating with each other: birds singing, crickets chirping, whales singing songs in the deep. (这个世界充满了动物相互交流的声音:鸟在歌唱,蟋蟀在啁啾,鲸鱼在深海唱歌。)”可推知,作者是通过举例提出动物语言的议题。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段首句中的“CETI hopes that if humans can understand what’s going on inside whales’ minds… it might inspire greater conservation measures. (CETI认为,如果人类能够了解鲸鱼以及其他动物的思想,这可能会激发更大的保护措施。)”和接着下文举例,在20世纪60年代,当研究人员发现座头鲸会互相唱歌时,他们的工作使“拯救鲸鱼”运动获得巨大成功。几十年来受到严重威胁的座头鲸和灰鲸的数量开始恢复。说明作者试图通过提及20世纪60年代的发现来解释科学研究有助于采取保护措施。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段最后一句“The result was a new kind of processing model able to anticipate what some whales might communicate next. (研究结果是一种新的处理模型,能够预测某些鲸鱼接下来可能交流的内容。)””可知,研究的结果是产生了一种新的处理模型,能够预测一些鲸鱼接下来可能交流的内容。所以研究者认为鲸鱼交流的内容是可预测的。故选A。
根据第一段“As AI technology and machine learning develop into new fields and areas, scientists are using it to interpret animal language. (随着人工智能技术和机器学习发展到新的领域和领域,科学家们正在利用它来解释动物的语言。)”及全文可知,全文围绕“利用人工智能解读动物语言”展开:开头指出动物语言曾是谜团,如今AI可能改变这一现状;中间介绍CETI项目,说明技术如何被用于分析动物声音;结尾提到该研究不仅限于鲸鱼,而是正在扩展到更多动物。故选C。
D
Every winter, salt emerges as a hero. Local officials spread it on streets and highways to keep traffic running, Since salt lowers the freezing point of water, it prevents ice from forming and making the roads dangerous. Now, it turns out it could also hold a way to keep your house safe and in great shape, too — all you need to do is place bowls of salt by the windows.
The enemies in sight here are damp and mold (霉菌) , which can make their way into your house through the windows. When temperatures drop, and one side of the glass is colder than the other, small drops of water form. Since you’re likely to be heating your home, the warm air encounters the cold surface and cools down, releasing the moisture (水分) it contains and turning it into small drops. These drops can then run down and make things wet, creating the perfect conditions for mold.
This recommendation to leave bowls by your windows first started making rounds in the UK. The concept is simple: Salt absorbs moisture from the air. Simply fill a shallow bowl or a small jar with some salt — this can be table salt or rock salt. The amount you use will vary, depending on the size of the window you’re placing it next to. Of course, generally speaking, the larger the window the more salt you’ll need.
However, the salt shouldn’t be left alone to do all the work. After all, salt only begins to absorb moisture at relatively high humidity (湿度). To really deal with the problem, the circulation of air is key. You can simply open the window to let the air flow. If your bathroom has an air exchange fan, turning it on after a shower can help a lot. Airflow helps to prevent water drops from building up on the cold surface, to a great extent, preventing you from needing to place bowls of salt by the windows.
12. Why are bowls of salt advised to put by the windows in winter?
A. To decorate the house. B. To prevent mold growth.
C. To keep windows clean. D. To make the room wetter.
13. What can be inferred about using salt bowls from paragraph 3?
A. The British are forced to do so. B. Larger bowls are always better.
C. It is a more affordable method. D. The salt should be in proper amount.
14. What does the underlined word “circulation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Quality. B. Composition. C. Flow. D. Stability.
15. What is the author’s opinion on placing bowls of salt by the windows?
A. It is useless and wasteful. B. It should be regarded as an aid.
C. It is convenient for household. D. Its actual effect remains unknown.
B 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第二段“The enemies in sight here are damp and mold (霉菌) , which can make their way into your house through the windows. When temperatures drop, and one side of the glass is colder than the other, small drops of water form. Since you're likely to be heating your home, the warm air encounters the cold surface and cools down, releasing the moisture (水分) it contains and turning it into small drops. These drops can then run down and make things wet, creating the perfect conditions for mold. (这里的敌人是潮湿和霉菌,它们可以通过窗户进入你的房子。当温度下降,玻璃的一侧比另一侧冷时,就会形成小水滴。因为你可能会给家里供暖,温暖的空气遇到寒冷的表面就会冷却下来,释放出其中所含的水分,变成小水滴。这些水滴会流下来,把东西弄湿,为霉菌创造了完美的生长条件。)”以及第三段“The concept is simple: Salt absorbs moisture from the air. Simply fill a shallow bowl or a small jar with some salt — this can be table salt or rock salt. (这个概念很简单:盐从空气中吸收水分。只需在一个浅碗或小罐子里装满一些盐——可以是食盐或岩盐。)”可知,冬天时窗户玻璃因温差会凝结水滴,这些水滴会使窗框周围潮湿,为霉菌滋生创造理想条件。而放置盐碗的目的正是解决潮湿问题,进而防止霉菌生长。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The concept is simple: Salt absorbs moisture from the air. Simply fill a shallow bowl or a small jar with some salt — this can be table salt or rock salt. The amount you use will vary, depending on the size of the window you’re placing it next to. Of course, generally speaking, the larger the window the more salt you’ll need. (这个概念很简单:盐从空气中吸收水分。只需在一个浅碗或小罐子里装满一些盐——可以是食盐或岩盐。使用的量会根据你放在旁边的窗户的大小而有所不同。当然,一般来说,窗户越大,你需要的盐就越多)”可知,使用的盐的量会根据窗户的大小而有所不同,由此可推知,盐的使用量要适当。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下文“You can simply open the window to let the air flow. If your bathroom has an air exchange fan, turning it on after a shower can help a lot. (你可以简单地打开窗户让空气流通。如果你的浴室有换气扇,洗澡后打开它会有很大帮助。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是空气流通,由此可推知,划线单词circulation指的是空气的“流动”。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the salt shouldn’t be left alone to do all the work. After all, salt only begins to absorb moisture at relatively high humidity (湿度) . To really deal with the problem, the circulation of air is key. You can simply open the window to let the air flow. Time Management Strategies for Students
Time management is a crucial skill for students to balance academic workload, extracurricular activities, and personal well-being. Here are five practical strategies to help you maximize productivity and reduce stress.
Prioritize tasks with a To-Do list.
Start each day by listing all academic and personal tasks, then categorize them into urgent, important, and optional. For instance, completing homework with tight deadlines should be more important than leisure activities like watching TV. ___16___ This clear structure helps you stay focused and prevents feelings of being overwhelmed.
Break large tasks into manageable steps.
Complex assignments, such as writing a research paper, can feel frightening. Divide them into smaller, actionable parts: research, outline, draft, revision, and finalization. ___17___ Celebrate small milestones (e. g. , finishing the outline) to maintain motivation.
Avoid multitasking — focus single-mindedly.
Contrary to common belief, multitasking actually reduces productivity. Switching between tasks increases errors and delays. ___18___ Try the Pomodoro Technique: perfect balance of 25-minute focus and 5-minute rest. This method enhances concentration and helps you stay on track.
___19___
Be honest about the time required for each task. Overestimating leads to procrastination (拖延), while underestimating causes unnecessary stress. Remember, flexibility is key — adjust your schedule in time if unexpected tasks arise. A realistic plan ensures you stay productive without burning out.
Review and reflect daily.
End each day by evaluating your progress: Did you complete priority tasks? What distractions could you avoid tomorrow? This reflection not only clarifies your workload but also builds confidence. ___20___
By integrating these strategies, you'll gain control over your schedule, reduce stress, and enhance both academic performance and quality of life. With consistency, these techniques will become lifelong habits, empowering you to achieve goals with confidence and ease.
A. Increase productivity.
B. Set realistic deadlines.
C. Instead, dedicate specific time to each activity.
D. However, it's essential to include short breaks to recharge.
E. Regularly improving your strategies helps you stay efficient.
F. Use a physical planner or digital app to visualize your tasks.
G. This systematic approach allows you to tackle each step without pressure.

Li Wei, a high school senior, had always felt confused between her mother’s expectation and her own dream. Her mother, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, ran a small clinic in their town. The air inside was always filled with the earthy smell of dried herbs. Her mother had long hoped Li Wei would take over the family business. “Medicine is a good job, and it connects us to our roots,” her mother often said, pointing to the old books lining on the shelves.
But Li Wei’s heart belonged to classical dance. She spent hours practicing in secret, and her room was full of posters of international dance groups. One evening, while helping her mother prepare herbs, Li Wei accidentally knocked over a jar of ginseng (人参). As she hurried to clean up, her mother’s voice cut through the silence: “You’re too distracted. This is why you can’t focus on your studies — and the clinic.”
Li Wei’s cheeks turned red. “I don’t want to be a doctor!” She shouted. “I want to dance!” Before her mother could answer, Li Wei grabbed her bag and ran out, leaving the clinic door moving.
Weeks passed, and the tension between them reached boiling point. Li Wei avoided the clinic, spending long hours at dance practices even though her knees had become swollen and red. When she did come home, the house was full of cold silence, broken only by the occasional noise of her mother’s tool grinding (研磨) herbs. But Li Wei couldn’t miss the way her mother’s eyes looked at her dance shoes, or the soft sighs that came from her during their rare talks. She was eager for her mother’s support.
Then came a big chance: a national dance competition. Li Wei’s hands shook as she filled out the application form, her heart beating fast. But when she looked at the bottom of the page, she felt scared. The form needed a parent’s signature, a sad reminder of the gap between her and her mother.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Li Wei stared at the application form, her mind racing.

The day of the competition arrived, and Li Wei stood backstage, feeling nervous.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Li Wei stared at the application form, her mind racing. That evening, she arrived at the clinic, seeing her mother was carefully weighing dried herbs at the wooden counter. With a deep breath, Li Wei placed the application form in front of her. Her mother didn’t look up immediately; Li Wei was ready to accept the rejection. Yet, to her surprise, after packaging a herb bag, her mother slowly picked up the form, scanning the competition details without a word. Then, even more astonishingly, she reached for a pen and wrote her name.
The day of the competition arrived, and Li Wei stood backstage, feeling nervous. It was her first time to be in such a big event. Great panic almost made her forget how to dance, and to make matters worse, her knees started to hurt. Then surprisingly, she noticed a familiar face in the crowd — her mother holding a small silk bag. “Carry this; it will make you feel more relaxed, ” her mother said, with appreciation. Li Wei had never seen her mother’s eyes like this before. As she stepped onto the stage, the familiar smell of the herbs filled her with strength. She was convinced that mother’s love is a never-ending gift.

C The involvement of caregivers.

After reading a new book by journalist Julia Hotz, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, and Belonging, I believe more and more in the idea that our social activities and community engagement are crucial for our health—not only for my patients but also for all of us.

A. By quoting an expert.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Li Wei stared at the application form, her mind racing.
