Good News! Students at Gaoxin Junior Middle School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School can take their favorite club activity classes. These classes take place every Thursday from 4:40 p.m. to 6:05 p.m.. With 55 different clubs, such as sports, arts and singing, students have many choices to keep them busy.
Among the fun classes, students really like the soil and hydroponics club (水土栽培社团). In each class, students first learn important things like how to tell plants from each other and how to plant them in the right place. Then, they have 10 minutes to observe (观察) real plants. Finally, here comes the most interesting part: They can plant their plants in the school garden! They need to choose the best way to care for different plants. For example, strawberries grow well in water and apples love soil.
“It’s interesting but also difficult,” said Wang Yijie, a 13-year-old girl. “In hydroponics, different plants need to stay in water with different PH levels. So, I need to make water match their needs by adding acid (酸) in different amounts (量). It is all about chemistry (化学).”
The clubs not only let students learn different subjects, but they also help students grow in many ways.
“Being in the singing club has taught me the power of teamwork,” said 12-year-old Zhao Ruixi. “I am also more confident now and no longer feel nervous when I have to speak in front of many people.”
1.When do the club activity classes take place at Gaoxin Junior Middle School?
2.How long do students observe real plants in the soil and hydroponics club?

Health problems can happen to anyone at any time. Many people don’t know much about health and first aid (急救). For example, my friend Tom had a nosebleed at school last year. He was so afraid that he didn’t know what to do. As a result, the situation got a bit worse. This made me realize how important basic first aid knowledge (知识) is. I decided to do something to make a change.
To help students learn basic skills, I set up a Health and First Aid Club at school in May last year. The club has two main aims: teaching first aid and helping students develop healthy habits. Firstly, we want students to know how to help with small hurts like cuts, burns, or nosebleeds. Secondly, we also hoped to raise students’ awareness (意识) of health. Knowing how to keep healthy, such as eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep.
Every month, we invite doctors to give talks on common injuries (伤害) and treatments (治疗). We also organize group discussions about healthy lifestyles. For example, we talk about why junk food is bad for us and how much sleep we need, what kinds of food are good for us. Because of the club, now ____________.
1.Did Tom know what to do when he had a nosebleed?
2.When did the writer set up the club?
3.How does the club help students learn about health and first aid?
4.Read the passage carefully and write a proper ending (about 20—30 words).

In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join environment clubs. In an environment club, people work together to protect the environment.
No rubbish lunches. How much rubbish do you throw after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be recycled. The students try their best to make less rubbish.
World Car-Free Day was first started by 35 cities in France on September 22, 1998. It was started to protect the environment. By now, more than 1000 cities around the world have had no-car day. In China, more and more people are taking part in the activity. The slogan (口号) for World Car-Free Day is, “If we drive less for one day, we can have one nicer day.” On a no-car day, nobody comes to school by car—not the students or the teachers!
Cars give pollution to the air, so remember: Walk, ride or run! Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!
Turn off water! Do you know that some toilets (厕所) could waste 20-40 ml of water an hour? In a year, that will fill a small river! To save the water, the members of the environment clubs try to mend those broken toilets.
We have only one earth. Let’s work hard together to make our world cleaner and more beautiful.

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy (同伴) reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program and has achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year reading program. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with a chance to practice lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or communicating with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now summer vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?
1.What is buddy reading?
2.How do schools usually pair up buddies?
3.How long did the reading program in Green School last?
4.What benefit (好处) did the school get from the program?
5.Do you think buddy reading is a good idea? Why or why not?

“Come on, Amy. You must TRY HARDER,” Amy told herself silently. She was in her class’s Second-Day-of-School Game with her teammates of the Blue Team, whom she only met yesterday. This was her first chance to make new friends.
Since the Blue Team left the park, they had worked out the first two clues (线索) and had been to the post office. Now they were in front of the cinema.
Henry was reading aloud the third clue: Go to our town founder’s last resting place.
“I know THIS ONE!” Amy thought, excitedly, but said nothing.
“To the cemetery (墓地),” Cindy said.
“No, wait!” Amy said. “I’ve read about it. The founder was buried near the library.” “Wow. I’ve walked by every day,” Tyler said. “Never knew that!”
“Good job! That will save valuable time,” Cindy smiled at Amy.
“We still need to hurry,” Tyler reminded, pointing to the Yellow Team coming near.
“I know a shortcut!” Henry suggested. “Follow me!” No one moved.
“No, seriously,” Henry said. “You know I’m always running late. I know every shortcut in town.” The others finally agreed.
A few sharp turns, and they were there! This time Amy read the clue aloud: Now go to the place where the football is running around!
“The football stadium (场馆)!” They called out together and started to run.
Now they’d got the final clue: Look where you’ve been, see where you are. Use your map wisely and you’ll be a star!
Looking closely at the map, everyone thought hard.
“Aha! A star!” Amy suddenly broke the silence. She quickly took out a pencil.
As they watched her drawing lines on the map, everyone understood.
They began running ________.
1.Was Amy new to the team members at first?
2.Where was the town founder buried?
3.What can we learn from the Blue Team?
4.What happened next? Finish the ending. (about 30 words)
At Woodbury Elementary, the US school I studied at, there is a special graduation (毕业) tradition. It’s called “Senior Send-Off”.
On the day of the graduation ceremony (典礼) , students arrive at school super early because they want to help do something. All the teachers and students (except for the graduates) work together to blow up lots of balloons. They use these balloons to make arches (拱门) . The arches lead the way to the school exit. A while later, the graduates arrive. This is their last day at the school, so it needs to be special.
The graduation ceremony began. We got together on the playground. All the graduates walked in a parade (游行) around the school. They were wearing their best clothes. The girls were dressed in gowns (女士礼服) and skirts, and the boys wore shirts, tuxedos (晚礼服) and neckties.
As they came close to the exit, we cheered loudly. The graduates smiled and waved, but their faces showed a mixed expression (表情) of sadness for leaving and excitement for what the future may hold. They took a deep breath and stepped through the last balloon arch—out of the school and into the next chapter (章节) of their lives.

I met an interesting old man on a Saturday morning when the brothers from my host family played soccer with other children.
Bronson and Troy went to the same school as me. They were in the school soccer team. Every weekend they had games with teams from other schools.
The soccer field was near our school. There were at least 100 people watching the game. Most of them were parents and friends of the players.
Our team wore blue and the other team wore red. The game began. As I watched the game, an old man next to me said hello to me.
“Bernard (the father of my host family) was a champion,” he said.
Bernard did not look strong, so I was surprised to hear that he was a champion. “Oh, he was the champion of a beer-drinking competition! He drank the most beer (啤酒) and became the winner,” the old man said cheerfully.
Later I found out that the old man was a teacher in my school. And he loved to tell funny jokes.

Every Friday afternoon, the school library at Lincoln Middle School turns into a newsroom. Dozens of students type away on laptops, brainstorm article ideas, and debate headlines. They’re not just doing homework—they’re producing Fresh Ink Weekly, a digital magazine all written by teens.
Started two years ago by English teacher Mr. Rhodes, the project aimed to improve writing skills in a real-world setting. But it has grown far beyond expectations. “At first, I thought we could hardly fill one page,” Mr. Rhodes says. “Now we have students asking for more space.”
The magazine covers everything from school events and student interviews to movie reviews and opinion pieces. Each issue (期刊) is emailed to parents and posted online, and some articles have even been picked up by the local newspaper.
Editor-in-chief Maya Brown, an eighth grader, says the best part is having a voice. “When you write something and others read it—it matters. It’s not just an assignment. It’s a message.”
With new articles each week and a growing list of student contributors (撰稿人), Fresh Ink Weekly continues to be a space where young voices are not only heard, but celebrated.

But now something different happens. “I can have more time to rest and talk about interesting things with my classmates. Now I enjoy myself during the break time,” said the boy.
Starting this term, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have longer breaks between classes because it is good for their health. To help children better enjoy break—time activities, some schools have mixed break time with labor (劳动) education. For example students can do some labor in school gardens and animal feeding places during breaks.

As the break time gets longer, making sure everyone is safe is also important. “Almost all the P. E. teachers carefully keep an eye on the students during the breaks. Sometimes the ground can be wet after a rain, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises so that they won’t run and fall down,” said a P. E. teacher

Starting this term, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have longer breaks between classes because it is good for their health. To help children better enjoy break—time activities, some schools have mixed break time with labor (劳动) education. For example students can do some labor in school gardens and animal feeding places during breaks.
