Unit 6 Earth and Beyond-Exploring the Topic-Reading Strategies
This part of the teaching material focuses on two main aspects: Thinking Skills and Reading Strategies. In Thinking Skills, students will learn the skill of comparing and contrasting. They will use tables as tools to compare different traits of celestial bodies like the Sun, Earth, inner planets, and outer planets. This helps them extract the commonalities and differences among these objects, thus cultivating their critical thinking ability.
For Reading Strategies, it guides students to summarize texts. By identifying the key information in the discourse, judging the similarities, differences, and relationships between the information, and inferring the logical relationships between the information, students learn to find topic sentences and key sentences that support details. This enables them to build the basic ability to summarize the main idea of the text.
教学目标
Knowledge Aims
Students can master relevant vocabulary about the solar system, such as "inner planets", "outer planets", "diameter", "asteroid belt", etc.
Students can understand the characteristics of celestial bodies like the Sun, Earth, and planets in the solar system, and the differences between inner planets and outer planets.
Ability Aims
Students are able to use the thinking skill of comparing and contrasting with the help of tables to analyze and understand the characteristics of different celestial bodies.
Students can identify topic sentences and key sentences in the text, extract important information, and summarize the main idea of the text in their own words.
Students can talk about the differences between inner planets and outer planets according to the information in the table.
Emotional Aims
Stimulate students' interest in exploring the universe, cultivate their spirit of exploration, and enhance their sense of cooperation.
教学重难点
Teaching Key Points
Guide students to master the thinking skill of comparing and contrasting, and use it to understand the characteristics of celestial bodies and the differences between inner and outer planets.
Teach students to identify topic sentences and key sentences, and master the reading strategy of summarizing texts.
Teaching Difficult Points
Help students internalize the thinking skill of comparing and contrasting and the reading strategy of summarizing, and be able to use them flexibly in reading different texts.
Cultivate students' ability to think critically and logically when analyzing and summarizing texts.
Solar System Elements
Sun: A star with a diameter of about 1,391,400 kilometers. Its real color is white, though it may appear yellow, orange, or red. There are no living things on it.
Planets
Inner Planets: Include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are closer to the Sun, smaller, and made of rocks and soil.
Outer Planets: Consist of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are farther from the Sun, larger, and mainly made of gas with rocks inside.
Reading Strategies
Comparing and Contrasting: Compare dimensions such as type, size, color, composition, etc. of different objects to find their differences and similarities.
Summarizing: First, identify topic sentences that express the main idea of the text. Then, find key sentences for each supporting detail. Combine and simplify this information to form a short and clear summary in your own words.
教学过程
Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show students some beautiful pictures of the solar system, including the Sun, Earth, Moon, and other planets. Ask them some simple questions, such as "What can you see in the pictures?" "Do you know the names of these celestial bodies?"
Then, lead in the topic of this class: exploring the reading strategies to better understand the knowledge about the Earth and beyond.
Thinking Skills - Comparing and Contrasting (12 minutes)
Activity 1 (4 minutes)
Present the text about the Sun and the Earth on the screen. Let students read the text carefully and underline the key information about their characteristics, such as diameter, color, and whether there is life.
Show a table on the screen with columns for "Celestial Body", "Diameter", "Color", "Existence of Life", etc. Guide students to fill in the table according to the text.
Check the answers with the whole class and explain how to compare and contrast the Sun and the Earth through the information in the table.
Activity 2 (5 minutes)
Let students read the text about inner planets and outer planets. Before reading, ask them to predict the possible differences between the two types of planets.
Then, show a table with blanks about the characteristics of inner and outer planets, such as distance from the Sun, size, composition. Students read the text and complete the table.
Divide students into pairs to discuss the differences between inner planets and outer planets based on the completed table. Ask some pairs to share their discussions with the class.
Summary (3 minutes)
Summarize the key points of comparing and contrasting. Remind students that they can use tables to clearly show the similarities and differences of different things, which helps them better understand and remember the information.
Reading Strategies - Summarizing (18 minutes)
Activity 1 (6 minutes)
Present a text about "Why is the sun so important?" on the screen. Explain to students that the first step of summarizing is to find the topic sentence that states the main idea of the text. Let students read the text and underline the topic sentence.
Then, ask students to find the key sentences that support each reason why the sun is important. After students finish, check the answers together. Explain that these key sentences provide details to support the main idea.
Activity 2 (6 minutes)
Let students read the text about the importance of the sun again. This time, ask them to write a summary of the text in their own words. Remind them to include the main idea and the key supporting details.
Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and help. After students finish, ask some of them to read their summaries aloud. Give feedback and praise for good summaries, and point out areas for improvement for others.
Activity 3 (6 minutes)
Present a new text about the Earth, such as "The Earth - Our Only Home". Let students read the text, underline the important information, and then write a summary.
After students complete the summary, have them exchange their work with their partners. Partners can check each other's work and give suggestions. Finally, ask some students to share their improved summaries with the class.
Consolidation and Extension (5 minutes)
Give students a short passage about a planet they haven't learned before. Let them use the reading strategies of comparing and contrasting and summarizing to analyze the text. They can first compare this planet with the ones they know, and then summarize the main idea of the text.
Ask students to share their analysis and summaries in groups. Encourage group members to discuss and add more ideas.
Summary and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Summary (2 minutes)
Review the main content of this class, including the characteristics of celestial bodies in the solar system learned through comparing and contrasting, and the reading strategy of summarizing. Emphasize the importance of these skills in reading and understanding texts.
Homework Assignment (3 minutes)
Ask students to find an English article about the universe by themselves. They need to use the reading strategies learned in this class to summarize the article and write down the similarities and differences between the celestial bodies mentioned in the article and the ones they have learned.
教学反思
Positive Aspects
The use of pictures in the lead - in part successfully attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in the topic, making it easier for them to enter the learning state.
In the teaching of thinking skills and reading strategies, the step - by - step guidance through different activities allowed most students to gradually master the skills of comparing and contrasting and summarizing. The group work and pair work provided students with opportunities to communicate and cooperate, which enhanced their speaking and thinking abilities.
Areas for Improvement
Some students still had difficulties in accurately identifying topic sentences and key sentences in the summarizing part. In the future, more targeted exercises and detailed explanations are needed to help them improve this ability.
The time control in group discussions was not perfect. Some groups spent too much time discussing, which affected the progress of the following teaching content. Next time, more specific time limits and guidance should be given during group activities to ensure the smooth progress of the whole class.
The evaluation method for students' learning achievements was relatively single, mainly relying on class performance and the completion of in - class tasks. In the future, a more comprehensive evaluation system should be established, including students' self - evaluation, peer - evaluation, and homework evaluation, to more objectively and comprehensively reflect students' learning conditions.
