What is a GPA?
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.
How to calculate a GPA?
●Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
●Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
●Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
●Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
●Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
Example: Academic transcript of Jane Smith Winter 2024

Although nowadays her images are often used on coffee cups and T-shirts, and the movies based on her life or her novels are often box-office hits, Jane Austen, one of the most important English novelists of the 19th century, spent her short, quiet life away from public attention. For most of her life she lived in a rural area of southern England where she was born. Her formal education was limited to a short time at boarding school.
Austen started writing at the age of twelve, for her family’s amusement and her own. In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. Later, she published Sense and Sensibility in 1811 at her own expense, which was a big success. Her other significant works came out over the following years. Northanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, one year after her death at age 41.
Her novels are all, in Austen’s own words, “pictures of life in country villages,” but the details reflect the influence of the great social changes. Through their heroines (女主人公), readers can see how difficult women’s life were during a period when a lady’s security depended on her making a good marriage. But would the marriage hurt the independence of mind? This was the key issue that Austen and her heroines cared most about.
Instead of using a male pseudonym (笔名), which was a common practice for women writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the author of her books. It seemed modest (谦逊的), but her writing voice was so confident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditions. For Austen, to live was to be herself, and her quietness was indeed a loud voice against the established conventions.
4. Why is Austen’s popularity mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To highlight her importance in fashion.
B. To make a comparison with her real life.
C. To explain the reasons behind her success.
D. To give an introduction to her achievements.
5. What do we know about the book Northanger Abbey?
A. It was Austen’s first published book. B. Its publication was a difficult process.
C. It made Austen popular with readers. D. Its copyright was sold to another writer.
6. What did Austen consider most important for women?
A. Social equality. B. Freedom of thought.
C. A safe marriage. D. Peaceful country life.
7. Why did Austen use “a lady” as the author of her books?
A. To challenge traditions. B. To follow the trends.
C. To show her modesty. D. To hide her identity.
B 5. B 6. B 7. A

根据第一段“Although nowadays her images are often used on coffee cups and T-shirts, and the movies based on her life or her novels are often box-office hits, Jane Austen, one of the most important English novelists of the 19th century, spent her short, quiet life away from public attention. (尽管如今简・奥斯汀的形象常出现在咖啡杯和T恤上,以她的生平或小说改编的电影也屡屡成为票房爆款,但作为19世纪英国最重要的小说家之一,她却在短暂而宁静的一生中远离公众的关注)”可知,作者提到奥斯汀如今的受欢迎程度是为了与她真实的低调生活形成对比。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. Later, she published Sense and Sensibility in 1811 at her own expense, which was a big success. Her other significant works came out over the following years. Northanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, one year after her death at age 41.

根据最后一段“Instead of using a male pseudonym (笔名), which was a common practice for women writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the author of her books. It seemed modest (谦逊的), but her writing voice was so confident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditions. (奥斯汀没有使用男性笔名,这在她那个时代的女性作家中很常见,她只是在自己的书中署名“一位女士”。这看似谦逊,但她的写作声音却非常自信和尖锐,嘲笑了被广泛接受的传统)”可知,奥斯汀用“一位女士”署名是为了挑战传统。故选A项。
C
Picture a robot. What do you see? A stony, steel machine built to be stronger than living beings? Unfortunately, this quality now threatens to flood the planet in e-waste. What if, our machines were designed to break down and disappear — like life does? For a study in Science Advances, researchers designed a robotic arm and a controller from pork gelatin and plant cellulose — materials strong enough to function yet easy enough to degrade (降解). After testing, both structures broke down in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable robotics often falls under the umbrella of soft robotics, which draws inspiration from nature’s creations. Pingdong Wei, a materials scientist at Westlake University, teamed up with his friend Zhuang Zhang, a robotics engineer now at Fudan University, to construct robots for the study. Wei had been drawn to robotics, Zhang recalls, and raised the idea of creating a robot himself. “That’s when I thought, ‘Why not use the materials he works with to build one?’”
They first made cellulose layers from cotton pulp, then added glycerol for flexibility and dried the layers for strength. To build sensors, the researchers used a conductive gelatin drawn out from pork, in which the flow of ions (离子) changes when the material is bent or pressed. They then folded the flat films and sensors into 3D structures. Wei and Zhang found that the controller and robotic arm stood up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity. Finally, they buried them both in a 20-centimeter-deep hole near their campus. Within eight weeks the machines were almost gone.
Wei and Zhang look forward to bots like these handling waste and then breaking down; they also expect robots that aid medical operations and then safely break down inside the body. But it’s important to note that the technology is in early stages. “If we want to have an environmentally friendly robot that goes outside in nature,” the researchers say, “we need to think of power supplies or batteries that are biodegradable.”
8. What is the author’s concern in paragraph 1?
A. Soil quality decreases. B. Machines end up as e-waste.
C. Disasters strike the planet. D. Robots threaten people’s lives.
9. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By describing a process.
C. By making a comparison. D. By showing cause and effect.
10. What may researchers consider about future robots?
A. Providing training to robots. B. Ensuring safe robot behavior.
C. Developing degradable batteries. D. Improving robots’ operation system.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Made of Metal B. Added for Flexibility C. Death by Design D. Power with a Price
B 9. B 10. C 11. C

What do you see? A stony, steel machine built to be stronger than living beings? Unfortunately, this quality now threatens to flood the planet in e-waste. (请想象一个机器人的形象。你脑海中浮现的是什么?一个冷冰冰的、由钢铁打造的比生物更强大的机械装置?遗憾的是,这种特性如今正导致电子垃圾在全球泛滥成灾)”可知,作者担心这些机械装置最终成为电子垃圾。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“They first made cellulose layers from cotton pulp, then added glycerol for flexibility and dried the layers for strength. To build sensors, the researchers used a conductive gelatin drawn out from pork, in which the flow of ions (离子) changes when the material is bent or pressed. They then folded the flat films and sensors into 3D structures. (研究团队首先以棉浆为原料制作纤维素薄层,随后加入甘油增强柔韧性,并通过干燥工艺提升材料强度。在传感器制造环节,科学家采用从猪肉提取的导电明胶材料——这种物质在弯曲或受压时会产生离子流变化。接着,他们将平面薄膜与传感器组件折叠组装成三维立体结构)”和“Finally, they buried them both in a 20-centimeter-deep hole near their campus. (最终,实验人员将整套设备埋入校园附近20厘米深的土坑中)”可知,该段按时间顺序详细说明机器人的制作和测试流程,属于过程描述。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中““If we want to have an environmentally friendly robot that goes outside in nature,” the researchers say, “we need to think of power supplies or batteries that are biodegradable.”(“如果我们想拥有一个能够在户外自然环境中运行的环保机器人,”研究人员说道,“我们就需要考虑使用可生物降解的电源或电池。”)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“What if, our machines were designed to break down and disappear — like life does?
D
We all pursue an ideal weight number for health and confidence, often using childhood memories, online calculators or BMI charts. However, Dr, Yoni Freedhoff warns these methods fail to consider individual differences. Our bodies change dramatically with age due to metabolism (新陈代谢) and lifestyle.
For decades, Body Mass Index (BMI) dominated weight assessments. This simple height-weight calculation sorts people from underweight to overweight. Yet Dr. Melanie Jay from NYU points out its problems: BMI gives the same ranges for 20-year-old athletes and 70-year-old grandparents. It ignores muscle mass, bone density, and health conditions, sometimes regarding fit individuals as overweight. Recent studies show that nearly 30% of people classified as overweight by BMI actually have healthy body fat percentages and normal metabolic profiles.
Newer metrics like the Body Roundness Index (BRI) focus on waist size instead of weight. “Belly fat is more dangerous than overall weight,” says D. Jay. Research indicates fat around organs produces harmful chemicals linked to diabetes and heart disease. However, even BRI has limitations — it can’t distinguish between fat types or account for medical conditions affecting belly size, such as digestive disorders.
Doctors increasingly emphasize overall health markers over specific weights, “Instead of focusing on a ‘magic number,’ we examine blood pressure, cholesterol (胆固醇), sleep quality and energy levels,” notes Dr. Jay. For those with weight-related conditions, even 5-10% weight loss can significantly improve health. A 2023 study found patients who achieved modest weight reduction showed better health markers than those pursuing extreme weight loss.
The healthiest weight, experts agree, isn’t found on charts but through sustainable habits, “When you eat nutritiously and stay active, your body finds its natural healthy weight,” advises Dr. Freedhoff. For some, medications or surgery may help, but the real goal is lifestyle change — not to achieve an ideal number on your scale. True health, after all, is measured not by a momentary reading on a scale, but by the daily choices that nourish both body and life.
12. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The limitations of BMI. B. The standards of weight measurement.
C. The classification of health conditions. D. The health assessment of overweight people.
13. What is the main advantage of BRI?
A. It clarifies different kinds of fat. B. It evaluates all types of body fat.
C. It measures highly risky body fat. D. It identifies harmful chemicals in fat.
14. What is Dr. Jay’s suggestion for weight assessment?
A. Stopping using BMI. B. Focusing on specific weights.
C. Considering multiple health signs. D. Adopting rapid weight loss approaches.
15. What does the author think of people’s pursuing an ideal weight number?
A. Reasonable. B. Practical. C. Dangerous. D. Unnecessary.
A 13. C 14. C 15. D

Without the education I was throwing away, I’d turn to a criminal and go to prison. When I got out, people would point fingers at me and say, “She used to talk in class.” ___18___
But when mum got home from work, I was still complaining, “Five pages! That’s impossible!”
“Well, you’d better get back to work,” she said, “and I want to read it when you’re through.”
Shortly after dinner, I handed the essay packed with my complaints to mum. ____19____ Instead, mum laughed so hard that she had to wipe her eyes, “Oh, this is going to be memorable.”
The next day, as Ms. Black read my essay aloud, the class erupted into laughter. I could tell they weren’t making fun of me. ____20____ The essay didn’t cure my shyness overnight, but I did learn I wasn’t shy in print. My face burned, but for the first time, it wasn’t from shame; it was pride.
A. I couldn’t help feeling awkward.
B. And then I chewed on my pencil.
C. Gradually the pages began flying by.
D. I half expected a lecture on my behavior in class.
E The fact was that I had the power to tell a funny story.

At nine years old, Charlotte went through more than the usual amount of excitement and change for a girl. In the past few months, her stable life had been turned upside down when her father was laid off from his job. This brought about a series of events, including her parents losing their beautiful Victorian home and forcing their family into a fifteen-foot trailer(拖车)they had previously only used for weekend camping trips.
Life in the trailer was tough, yet it was filled with warmth. Though her family possessed little, their door was never closed to those who had even less. Never will she forget the first time they squeezed onto the tiny couch(长沙发)together, which doubled as her parents’ bed at night. One evening, as her mother was checking the last food they had, her voice trembled, “We don’t have enough food to last the week.” Hearing this, Charlotte was seized by a sense of sadness, like a huge stone settled in her heart.
Moments later, her mother rose to prepare the modest chicken dinner. Charlotte wandered outside where her dad was working on their broken-down truck. Just then, a middle-aged man with dirty clothes emerged from a winding path. Coming right up to them, the man whispered in hesitation with a mix of shame and hope, “I... I am a hiker and have got lost. I’m hungry and wondering if you have any food to spare.”
Charlotte’s heart tightened, countless thoughts racing in her mind. They barely had enough for themselves. The chicken for dinner wouldn’t even fill three plates. “But the man seems to be in greater need of food than we do,” she thought to herself.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“Of course!” The words escaped Charlotte before she even realized it. She turned to her dad, who nodded without hesitation. With light steps, Charlotte went inside and told her mum. They invited the man to have dinner together and Charlotte’s mother divided the chicken into four portions instead of three, the biggest share for him. The man’s face lit up with gratitude as he took a bite, “The most delicious chicken in my life.” As they ate together in the trailer, laughter bubbled up—stories were shared, and for a moment, the bitterness of their life was left behind. After dinner, her father showed the hiker the right way. He thanked them repeatedly and hit the road.
Days later, the hiker returned with a big bag. Inside the bag were some canned foods, fresh bread and even a small bag of candies for Charlotte. “I couldn’t forget your kindness,” he explained gratefully. Charlotte hugged him, her eyes sparkling, while her father clapped him on the back like an old friend. That evening, they feasted on a proper meal, a warm atmosphere flowing in the trailer, as if hope itself knocked on their door. The hiker’s gesture not only filled their stomachs but also warmed their hearts. It was a reminder that even in the darkest times, kindness has a way of circling back when least expected.

●Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
●Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
●Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
●Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
●Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
Example: Academic transcript of Jane Smith Winter 2024

What are the consequences of failing college courses?
●Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organizations and program choices, as competitive programs require top GPAs.
●Most financial aid programs require a specific GPA. A sharp drop in GPA due to several course failures may lead to removal from financial aid programs, unless you retake the courses and pass.

A Stopping using BMI. B. Focusing on specific weights.
C. Considering multiple health signs. D. Adopting rapid weight loss approaches.
15. What does the author think of people’s pursuing an ideal weight number?
A. Reasonable. B. Practical. C. Dangerous. D. Unnecessary.

Now what? ____17____ What if talking were the first step towards life as a bad person? I started picturing my future as a failed bank robber.
The next day as Ms. Black read my essay aloud, the class erupted into laughter. I could tell they weren’t making fun of me. ____20____ The essay didn’t cure my shyness overnight, but I did learn I wasn’t shy in print. My face burned, but for the first time, it wasn’t from shame; it was pride.
