Unknown listening . and speaking, too. Listen to a radio interview about american food and check whether your answers to activity one or correct. Today our guest is Steve box. He's here to talk about cultural influences on american food. Welcome, Steve. Thank you. It's nice to be here. When IT comes to american food, some say no food was ever invented in america. What do you think? HMM, that's not really true. For example, some say the hamburger comes from hamburger in germany, but they're wrong. The recipe for the meat and a hamburger may have come from germany, but the final hamburger we know today was definitely created by americans. You mean there was a mixing of cultures. Food from overseas changed when he arrived in the states, right? And there are many more examples of mixed culture dishes like noos. for example. Oh, I just love nato's mexican corn chips covered in cheese. Yes. they're delicious, but they're not traditional mexican food. The recipe was actually invented by a mexican cook for his american customers. Then there are fortune cookies. What do you . mean they're not chinese? Your kidding. But every chinese restaurant in amErica has them. yes, but their unknown in china. About one hundred years ago, someone in san Francisco put a piece of paper with a fortune on IT inside a japanese style cookie. And the fortune cookie was born. That's interesting. So there are like a mix of the chinese, american and japanese cultures. You got IT, and then we have gambled the spicy too. IT was invented in new orleans over two hundred years ago and mixes french, african, native american and spanish cooking. So it's the food of many different cultures all in one dish. Exactly american cooking often mixes things from around the world to make something completely new. And IT often amazed me how many different cultures and nationalities are represented in our community. In a community so diverse, mutual understanding doesn't come easily. So I tried hard to be adapted from the very beginning. And soon I found myself adJusting to the bigger food portions and railways in the middle, the roads. I even tried fortune cookies for the first time in my life. And soon I thought so, content with my progress that I gradually build a cozy next with people of my culture, my age, who thought and acted exactly like I did while why bother talking to anyone else. The job hunting process, in course work, were already so tiring and needing people outside my circle just seems so unnecessary and scary. That one day is changed. IT was a Normal school day. I was in the atrium looking at the flags. As always, I saw that the flag of china was surrounded nicely by the flag of canada, colombia, chili and dr. congo. And suddenly is struck me that I didn't know anyone of those nationalities. What a wait was for me to ignore the diversity of experience and opinions that the community had to offer. I was determined to change, but IT wasn't easy. I experience the owner of having to explain a joke, but nobody understood the nervousness of asking questions about other cultures that seems so obvious and silly. The anger of defending my own belief only to get suspicion, and a ruthless I reach her. But fortunately, these, these comforts were soon and taken over by something else, such as the amusement of teaching my classmates to pronounce my last name test using a part part of their town that they didn't know existed. Mark the pauses you hear. The first sentence has been done for you. No one really knows exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California. Its likely that Native Americans moved to California at least fifteen thousand years ago. Scientists believe that these settlers crossed the Bering Strait by a land bridge which existed in prehistoric times. In the 16th century, the native people suffered greatly after the arrival of the Europeans. Thousands of them were killed or forced into slavery. In addition, many died from the diseases brought by the Europeans. However, some survived these terrible times, and today there are more Native Americans living in California than in any other state of America. Listen again and repeat. Pausing in speaking is to give one a chance to breathe, and pauses should be normally used: When there would normally be punctuation, such as commas or periods, in a written text. At the end of each long unit of meaning, for example, long noun phrases or adjective clauses. For transitions, when the speaker is introducing another idea. For emphasis. Pausing before and after the most important words highlights and draws the listener’s attention to them. Pausing in speaking Do you know any special snack in your hometown?
