From a very young age, we were shown images of smokers􀆳 lungs and warned about al kinds of diseases caused by smoking. We also learned about the risks of passive smoking—or secondhand smoke. But there􀆳s another potential danger that may surprise you: thirdhand smoke. After someone smokes, some harmful chemicals in the smoke remain on wals, clothing and other surfaces in the area. These chemicals, such as nicotine, are caled third- hand smoke. Experts believe it is also harmful. “Research continues, but there are things we already know,” says an expert on lung diseases. “There has been an increased interest recently,” the expert says. “We􀆳re seeing more cases that are not related directly to smoking or secondhand smoke.” They are now looking at other causes for cancer aside from direct exposure. In fact, a study in 2013 found that thirdhand smoke may damage human DNA. Researchers tested human cels in a lab. The expert believes that DNA damage is a real risk. “It can increase your chances of disease,” he explains. Thirdhand smoke builds up on surfaces over time. It stays for weeks, months or even years. It can􀆳t be removed by airing rooms, opening windows or using fans. An earlier study found that when nicotine reacts with nitrous acid(亚硝酸) in the air, cancer-causing compounds are formed. Babies and young children are at greater risk of exposure to thirdhand smoke than adults. That􀆳s because they often touch objects and then put their hands in their mouths. This can increase their exposure to toxic chemicals. Thirdhand smoke may also cause health problems for pets as they groom(梳理毛发) themselves by licking their fur. 根据短文内容,回答问题。(每题答案不超 过9个词) 1. What was shown to people to warn them about the risks of smoking? 2. What is the potential danger that may surprise us? 3. Where do the harmful chemicals in the smoke remain? 4.
