It is the first day I􀆳ve tried not to use my phone. I reach toward the bedside table. My phone isn􀆳t there. I feel kind of bored. I􀆳ve only been awake for a few seconds. No news round-up with breakfast. No weather forecast. I have no choice but to look out of the window: It􀆳s the early hours of a beautiful day. I get on my bike. I􀆳m on my way to leading a writers􀆳 workshop for middle school students at a school I􀆳ve never been to, so I bring a map of Paris with me, just in case(以防万一). At the first traffic lights, I put my hand into my pocket, checking for my phone. Have I done that at every light these past few years? Possibly. A At the school, I know that these kids, born in the 2000s, don􀆳t remember life before the Internet. B As I chat with them, I􀆳m not thinking about the e-mails piling (堆) up in the phone I don􀆳t have. C But during breaks, I feel in my pockets for a phone. D It􀆳s a subconscious(下意识的) action. Afterwards, I realize I􀆳ve survived much of the day offline. There is nothing wrong with me. Back at home, I spend an hour reading a novel before sitting down . On paper, I manage to produce more than 10 lines before my mind starts to work slowly, and then the phone interests me. There are moments like this when I would normaly reach for my phone and check the news to find if something happened in the world in the last several minutes. We al know how it goes. You get your phone for a very special reason, then get caught up in a social media post. When you put your phone down, you wonder why you picked it up in the first place. But not today. When I can􀆳t help but pick up my phone, I have a piece of chocolate. That􀆳s what􀆳s known as the compensation(补 偿). After my son comes home from school, he asks, “So, Dad, did you manage without a phone?” “Yep, no problem at al,” I lie, teling him something that is not true. “But why are you doing this?” he asks. He wonders why an adult would wilingly give up using his phone. I fal asleep on the sofa, my book on my chest, with a little less blue light in my body and without a last look at my e-mails. Chylisse couldn􀆳t drive because of a disease, so they couldn􀆳t travel far from their home in the smal town of Redvers, Saskatchewan. One of their pets, however, wasn􀆳t tied down by Chylisse􀆳s health condition. 1. Spooky is one of the family􀆳s black cats. He and his brother, Licorice, joined the family in 2013. The cats lived indoors during the cold winters. But the moment spring hit, they loved going outside. At first, Chylisse wasn􀆳t terribly worried when Spooky didn􀆳t return from an evening walk in the backyard on July 22. “I thought he would turn up in one of our rooms,” she recals. “2. So I was a bit nervous that maybe he􀆳d been hit by a car.” As it turned out, Spooky had climbed into the engine bay(发动机舱) of a parked truck. When the truck left, Spooky became a stowaway (偷乘者). Somehow, he remained unharmed in that smal space ful of wires and hoses while the truck drove about 230 kilometers southwest to Tioga, North Dakota, then northeast to Manitoba, then back down to North Dakota again. The folowing night, July 23, the truck􀆳s driver opened the hood(引 擎 盖) to check the engine. 3. His unexpected passenger was wearing a tag that listed the phone number for an animal hospital. Meanwhile, there were lots of wet eyes in Chylisse􀆳s home. “My daughters were crying,” she says. “Spooky meant the world to us.” He had been missing for about 24 hours until the kids went to bed on July 23. It was late that evening when Chylisse received a cal from Spooky􀆳s vet. He told her the missing cat had been found in North Dakota by a trucker named Jack Shao. The vet gave Chylisse Jack􀆳s phone number. She caled him immediately. “He sounded kind of upset,” she recals. “4. So he didn􀆳t know what to do with this animal.” Fortunately, Jack􀆳s route would take him back through Redvers the next day. To keep Spooky safe on the trip back home, Jack placed him inside a box with a smal opening for airflow. 5. But soon his usual character came back. Nowadays, Spooky and Licorice don􀆳t wander(溜达) far from home. “I don􀆳t know if Spooky learned from his experience or if it􀆳s because the cats are getting old,” she says. “They stay close to the house and take in the sunset.” (素材来源: Reader􀆳s Digest) 根据短文内容,选出可以填入空白处的最佳 选项(选项中有两项为多余选项)。 A. A pair of bright eyes looked at him. B. Slowly, he forgot al about his owner. C. That said, we do live close to the road. D. He􀆳s a good guy, but he􀆳s not a cat person. E.
