Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·贵州黔南州·期中)
It’s important to teach your children good manners (礼仪). Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult and there are pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.
Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they’re going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can have a manners competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect (尊敬) teachers and other classmates. They shouldn’t be noisy in class. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. Good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners will provide a lot of help for your children in their daily life. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

This is an old tradition that comes from the Maori, who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.
④Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. In some countries, important people used to wear special rings. It was the custom for visitors to kiss these rings when they came for a meeting. In France, when people meet, they sometimes kiss each other on the face.
⑤In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. Even family members bow to each other. How low to bow depends on how respected the other person is.

Long ago, they found their way to Japan and some Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.
As for the name itself, it is surely meaningful. The Chinese word for “knot”, jie, mean “connection”. And the pronunciation of the Chinese word “jie is very close to that of ji, “good luck”. The knots are used widely in everyday life. They come in different sizes. Small ones are connected to jewelry, clothes and gifts in order to draw people’s attention, while large ones are used to make a living room or study more beautiful. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and usages. “Life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy (礼貌).”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
People love being polite. You might have noticed we are always saying “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, and “sorry”. In our daily life, we often ask someone to do something for us. ▲ Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other persons to do. So it is necessary to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.
To do this, you might say some words such as “can”, “could”, or “please” to soften (使温和) your approach. They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of making a request. But don’t worry— the listener will understand you. For example, if you are in a restaurant and say “I want the bill (账单)” to the waiter, your request will be considered very directly. You might use this kind of language if you are angry because they have had very bad service. However, if you wish to sound polite, you might consider speaking like this: “Can I have the bill, please? ” or “Could I possibly have the bill, please? ”
We can also use polite language to ask for permission (准许). For example, just sitting down next to someone without asking might be considered a bit forward (鲁莽的). If that person is waiting for a friend, you may create an uncomfortable situation. You can ask for permission first. For example, “Do you mind if I sit here? ”
In the daily life, if you really need help, being polite is quite necessary.
1.What is the best sentence for “ ▲ ” ?
A.However, it may be not so polite.
B.However, it may sound like a stupid idea.
C.However, it may start a fight between two friends.
2.What does the underlined word “approach” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
A.方向 B.态度 C.靠近
3.If a person says “I want the bill” in a restaurant, he probably means that ________.
A.he is not happy with the service
B.he and the waiter are close friends
C.he is trying to make himself sound polite
4.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.How to Behave in a Restaurant
B.Stop Making Requests
C.Be Polite with Your Words

In recent years, plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems around the world. Many countries have been looking for effective ways for a better future. In November, 2022, China started a “bamboo instead of plastic” initiative (倡议) with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (国际竹藤组织), which will hopefully increase green bamboo products and reduce plastic pollution.

It doesn’t cause any pollution when it has to be thrown away.
China is one of the countries with the richest bamboo resources in the world. The Chinese are a pioneer (先锋) in the use of bamboo. Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou in the country have set up companies (公司) to develop and produce bamboo products. In some villages, people told him that they could sell local products easily thanks to a growing number of visitors brought in with the help of convenient transport.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·贵州长顺县·期中)
Slow travel is about living a bit of life as the local people do and feeling cultural differences during your traveling. The more time you spend there, the easier it is to experience it more deeply.
When I was in India in 2012, I stayed with a local family. During that time, I kept hearing a loud, regular chant (单调的吟唱). I asked about it on the first day and was told that it was a call to prayer (祈祷). But I didn’t realize the chant was actually the sound of the doorbell until the fourth day! Thanks to my slow travel! If I had traveled faster or left on the third day, I would have held a completely different understanding of the chant.
During a three-week stay in Italy, I went to see a film. There I met two locals, Linda and her husband Jeff. After the film, they invited me to dinner. At the restaurant, no menu was offered. Instead, after some conversations with a waiter, our meals were decided. Their kindness gave me a chance to go where tourists never go and to experience one of the locals’ favorite restaurants.
If you also want to try slow travel, the following may be helpful.
Travel in the off-season (淡季). Visit a place without a lot of tourists. Some places for traveling are not open, but you may find more of the local culture.
Stay where the locals live. Try to get close to the locals and it can help you enter their life quickly.
Shop at markets and small stores where you can find local products.
1.The writer kept hearing ________ during staying with a local family in India in 2012.
A.a popular song B.the doorbell C.a call to work
2.The writer thinks Linda and Jeff are ________.
A.friendly B.honest C.polite
3.What advice does the writer give us on slow traveling?
A.Staying where the tourists live.
B.Traveling in the off-season.
C.Shopping at big stores.
Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·贵州六盘水市·期中)
Monday September 9th, 2024 Sunny
I joined the reading club this term, and it is one of the best clubs I have ever joined. Since I joined it, I’ve made lots of friends who are good at thinking deeply.
After school, I went to the reading club and waited for the activity to start as usual today. This was my second time here. I had never expressed my ideas in front of the members before. The first activity was on September 6th, and on that day, the teacher shared some of her favorite books with us. Today, the teacher let each of us choose one of our favorite books and shared our own ideas with one another after reading. In the beginning, I thought such an activity was easy. However, I went through a difficult time. I couldn’t express my thoughts freely. Worst of all, I was afraid of talking in public.
I thought the main reason was that I’ve read too few books to talk about my thoughts. But the club members said, “Reading always takes a long time, so there is nothing to worry about. Just express yourself bravely.” In the end, with their encouragement, I plucked up the courage (鼓起勇气) and shared many ideas that I found useful. To my surprise, I got much applause (掌声). Although my performance wasn’t as good as other excellent members, I could talk publicly. I was really happy about that.
It is normal to have bad feelings when you meet difficulties, but doubting (怀疑) and fearing cannot help you make progress. Whatever you meet, keep trying and you will succeed in the end.
1.When did the writer first join in the activity of the reading club?
A.On September 6th. B.On September 9th. C.On September 10th.

A.Introducing one of their favorite books. B.Speaking out some sentences in the books.
C.Sharing some opinions with students after reading.
3.How did the writer’s feelings change according to the passage?
A.relaxed→worried→surprised→happy
B.afraid→sad→nervous→relaxed
C.worried→sad→brave→surprised
4.What does the writer advise us to do?
A.Try our best to make progress in reading.
B.Read more books and share them with others.
C.Never give up when we face some difficulties.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·贵州贵阳云岩区·期中)
What year were you born in? Are you a dragon? That is to say, were you born in the Year of the Dragon?
As we know, this year is the Year of the Dragon, and everyone is excited about talking about dragons. Many of them have noticed that more and more people are using the word “loong” instead of “dragon” in their daily life. Actually, the loongs in Chinese culture, believe it or not, are far different from the dragons in Western culture.
First, let’s talk about their origins (起源). Loongs are connected to stars and rain. They are believed to have to do with the power of emperors in the past. Dragons, however, are related to floods and dangerous waters underground.
Second, let’s dig into their stories. Loongs are like messengers between the sky and the earth. They help out the rulers, who become kings because of them. Dragons, though, are troublemakers. They fight with the rulers and can even beat them! But as time passes, dragons lose their shine and heroes start killing them.
Third, let’s look at what they mean. Since loongs represent (代表) power, they are seen as a symbol of the emperor and an important part of ceremonies and traditions. Dragons, though, are bad news. They are a symbol of evil (恶), and beating the dragons is seen as a victory over evil.
Lastly, let’s check out how they look. Loongs are like a mix of animals, with heads like camels and necks like snakes. They don’t need wings to fly because they are already skilled at it. Dragons are more like snakes, living underground and causing problems. They don’t have wings either, but people add those to make them look more impressive.
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By asking questions. B.By listing numbers. C.By giving examples.
2.What are loongs connected with according to the passage?
A.Stars and the moon. B.The power of emperors. C.Dangerous waters underground.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Loongs have wings. B.Dragons are good news. C.Loongs are used in ceremonies.
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.The origins of dragons and loongs.
B.The meanings of dragons and loongs.
C.The differences between dragons and loongs.
Passage 2

The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handicraft. It has a history of over 1,000 years in China. In the early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later, oil paper umbrellas were spread to other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed umbrellas appeared in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. They were turned into decorative artifacts (装饰手工制品).
Yuhang in Hangzhou has been known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper, bamboo and a coating of tung oil (桐油). They need to take even more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting papers and painting patterns. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) of China.
A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life,” Liu said. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed 1,000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas. Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also goes to events in different places to promote (推广) the art.

Falling on the 24th day of the sixth lunar (农历) month, the Torch (火把) Festival is an important and traditional event for the Yi ethnic group (彝族) in Southwest China. Cheering, singing and dancing, local Yi people and the tourists usually have fun around the fire during the three-day celebration.
The Yi ethnic group started the festival because of their natural respect of fire. The early Yi people lived in high and cold areas in the mountains. For them, fire was an important way to light, warm, and cook. There was an old tradition—before bringing meat home, people must light a small fire outside the door and put the meat over the fire. In farming, fire was used to light leaves on the ground to make the land rich.
Nowadays, the Yi people still celebrate the festival and it has become a social event. Every year, several thousand Chinese and foreign visitors come and join the local Yi people. In the daytime, they drink and take part in different kinds of activities, like horse racing, bullfighting and so on. When the night falls, everyone holds a torch and walks around their houses and fields. Then, they put the torches together to make a big bonfire.

②In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake. It is a way to show respect to the other person. Athletes (运动员) from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they have already known well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave (挥手), or maybe just nod their heads.
③In New Zealand, there is a special way of greeting called “Hongi”. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes.

Passage 5
(24-25九年级上·贵州贵阳市联考·期中)
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.A 4.C
【导语】本文主要讲述了礼貌的重要性,并举例说明如何礼貌的说话。
1.推理判断题。根据上文“People love being polite.”及“Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other persons to do. So it is necessary to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.”可知,此空与“礼貌”有关,结合选项可知,A选项“然而,这可能不是那么礼貌。”符合语境。故选A。
2.词义猜测题。根据“you might say some words such as ‘can’, ‘could’, or ‘please’”及“They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of making a request.”可知,此处approach可理解为“使用某种语气或态度”,故选B。

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·贵州铜仁市碧江区·期中)
In recent years, plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems around the world. Many countries have been looking for effective ways for a better future. In November, 2022, China started a “bamboo instead of plastic” initiative (倡议) with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (国际竹藤组织), which will hopefully increase green bamboo products and reduce plastic pollution.
Bamboo is a renewable natural resource of great value, such as cleaning air and preventing soil loss. Unlike trees which usually need so long time to fully grow, bamboo can be harvested in 3 to 5 years. As long as it is protected well, bamboo can be cut every year and doesn’t have to be replanted. Bamboo can be used to make different kinds of products. These products can take the place of plastic products in many fields such as packaging and building. Moreover, bamboo is an innocuous material.
They cover the areas of tableware, furniture, decoration, daily necessities, etc. Many of them have been sold to different countries. China is also sharing its technologies and experience to help other countries with rich bamboo resources. It is hoped that countries will work together for global green development.

A.To ask people to protect bamboo.
B.To advise people to plant more bamboo.
C.To encourage people to make good use of bamboo.
2.What does the underlined word “innocuous” in Paragraph 2 mean?

Passage 3
(24-25九年级上·贵州清镇市·期中)
The traditional Chinese calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. In China, the 24 solar terms were created thousands of years ago to guide agricultural (农业的) production. But solar term culture is still useful today to guide people’s lives through cultural activities and special food that go with each term.
Great Heat, the 12th solar term of the year, begins this year on July 23 and ends on August 7. During Great Heat, most parts of China enter the hottest season of the year. Here is something you should know about Great Heat.
Great Heat is a season of harvesting (收割). During this time, the sunshine, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall are good for the plants. But many natural disasters (灾害) also happen. So, it’s important to harvest and plant in time.
Sending the Great Heat ship is a tradition in Taizhou. The ship is full of all kinds of meat. More than 50 fishermen take turns to carry the ship. After they walk through the street for long, they will finally pull the ship out of the port and burn it at sea. People believe that is a symbol of good harvests and health.
People in different places enjoy different food. For example, in southern Shandong, people would like to drink mutton soup. Grass jelly is very popular in Guangdong because there is a saying “Eating grass jelly in Great Heat will make you stay young”.
1.Great Heat lasts for ________ days this year.
A.6 B.16 C.22
2.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

To my surprise, I got much applause (掌声)...I was really happy about that.”可知,作者一开始对活动感到容易(relaxed),但又因无法自由表达感到困扰和担忧(worried),最后因勇敢分享得到掌声并感到惊讶和高兴(surprised和happy)。故选A。

3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Loongs have wings. B.Dragons are good news. C.Loongs are used in ceremonies.
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·贵州安顺市关岭·期中)
