M: It won’t be expensive. What kind of price do you think we can afford?
W: Oh, about six hundred dollars. It doesn’t have to be equipped with furniture. We have our own furniture. The apartment should not be in the city center. I like quietness.
M: Yeah, I agree. I’d like the apartment to be near a park, so we can go running outdoors as usual.
W: Well, we can look for the information on the Internet or call Lily. She knows a lot about houses.
M: I personally prefer looking through the local paper. We can take a look in the For Rent section.
W: That sounds like a great plan. Let’s hope we can find something good!

【原文】
W: What’s thought to be the oldest message in a bottle yet found has been picked upon a beach in Western Australia. Tonya and her family were walking along the beach and trying to help pick up some rubbish when she discovered a glass bottle with a damp note inside. She suspected it was a trick. But she kept the bottle, thinking it might look good on her bookcase.
She put it in her oven to dry out the paper note. Later, she noticed faint handwriting on the note, with a date of 12 June 1886 and the name of the ship, Paula. It also gave the geographical position of the ship, which had been sailing in the Indian Ocean nearly 600 miles away. A little more detective work online and some help from the Museum of Western Australia help to confirm the find was real. The ship had been traveling from Cardiff to Indonesia. The bottle would have been thrown overboard by the crew as part of an experiment by the German Naval Observatory to track global ocean currents.
The note instructed the finder to send it back to Hamburg. The bottle will however stay in Australia and go on display in the museum in Perth.

Think about all those successful people in your life that you know. How many of them build their success overnight? How many of them didn’t care about their goals? How many of them gave up after the first failure?
Most of the people we know to be successful were very persistent and devoted to their dreams. In other words, they work hard towards their dreams and keep trying, even if their goals aren’t easy to achieve. They didn’t give up just because they faced barriers and problems. They might even get encouraged by them.
Persistence really matters. It can help build your character. Nothing builds your character more than overcoming failures and problems in life. You get tougher and can handle anything life might throw at you. Each time you win your urge to give up, you make your mind and personality a bit stronger. Each of those wins will build your character to be healthier and to handle more stress.
When you are committed to something, you are willing to learn what it takes to be successful. You will be required to learn new skills and solve new kinds of problems. When you are persistent about your goals, you will have to learn new ways of doing things. Sometimes you might notice that to solve a particular problem, you need to learn more about it. When you study more about the topic, you discover new exciting subtopics to know about. As you think more in-depth into that problem, you will be exposed to new ideas and thoughts. Persistence is the driver behind your ability to learn what you need to know.
When you keep building your persistence and willpower, you will face many failures. Things don’t always end up as you have planned. With persistence, you will learn how to solve those problems and get back up after a failure. You will learn that failure is not the end of the world. Life goes on, and so can you. Each time you decide to overcome your failure, you will learn something new, and you will be a bit stronger than before. Those changes won’t show daily, but slowly they will start to stack up. If you look back and analyze your process, you will discover that you handle the stressful situation more efficiently, and after failures, you won’t go into despair. You rather know how to handle each failure as you have accumulated experiences from them and handle challenging situations.
Persistence is a basic quality to develop in life because it is closely related to personal development and improvement. As you already know, it is not easy, but it is worthy of your effort.
24.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph refers to________.
A.dreams B.successful men C.most of the people D.barriers and problems

A.Persistence builds your character.
B.Persistence teaches you how to manage failures.

Shakespeare has rightly said, “A light heart lives long.” There is no greater thing than cheerfulness in the daily life and our cheer can be expressed through a smile or a laugh. The saying “Laughter is the best medicine” has deep meanings. Many scientists have stressed the importance of laughter, which can lead a healthy life.
In ancient times, most Emperors and Kings had a clown to make them laugh. This improved the atmosphere and helped people to come closer. Almost every comedy has a character to make people laugh. Funny TV plays use recorded sounds of laughter at the proper place.
It is a wellknown fact that health and cheerfulness influence each other. Doctors and psychologists all agree that patients can actually benefit from laughter. Those who see the bright side of life and remain happy are unlikely to go down with stressrelated problems.
A good laugh is also a useful tool in the workplace. Nervousness is unavoidable in business, but humor is an unexpected surprise that can help people better deal with the nervousness. Researchers have found that the more stress people are under, the more they are ready to laugh. A good laugh is looked upon as an encouraging tool. After laughing, you can begin a new thought process; it helps to set the mind in a different way.
Many cities in India have laughter clubs where people get together in the morning for laughing. There are over 200 such clubs in India, which were started in Mumbai. All kinds of fitness exercise, along with laughter skills, are combined into the program. This has become known as the laughter treatment. Until now, many sick people have benefited from it.
Making people laugh is an art and can be cultivated. Collect jokes, funny stories and humorous sayings and use them properly. Build a humor collection — buy books by P. G Wodehouse or anyone else who makes you keep laughing. Watch comedy plays when you are down in life.
28.How does a good laugh help people in the workplace?
A.It keeps people healthy. B.It helps people have creative ideas.
C.It helps people make more money. D.It frees people from their worries.
29.What can laughter clubs do for people?
A.They can make people confident.

There isn’t any doubt that positive thinking is valuable after you find out you have cancer. But will positive thoughts help the cancer go away?
There have been a number of studies on this subject, but none of the studies say that positive thinking is a factor (因素) in helping cancer go away, or that negative feelings can make cancer worse.
So, is there a reason to have a positive attitude? Of course there is.While I understand the danger of my illness, I choose not to focus on statistics(数据统计). I always imagine myself as being among the smaller group of patients who survive. Why do I do that? So I can sleep well; so I can plan a trip for two days from now; so I have a reason to begin writing another book with the expectation that I’ll finish it; so my husband and I can enjoy lunch out; so I can reach out to someone else who’s having a difficult time and offer them encouragement.
A positive attitude can also help family members feel better so they can contribute to a more loving family environment. Most cancer patients, as well as their family members, know all too well how dangerous cancer can be. It’s difficult to carry on when patients receive bad news. But a positive attitude helps me want to do things that I know are beneficial(有益的) to my health, and helps me through the thinning hair, tiredness and low blood counts which are the side effects(副作用) of my treatment(治疗).
So, I prefer to stay happy and positive. I do my best not to think too much about all the hospital visits, and I try not to panic (惊慌) if I feel any pain. Instead, I seek joy as much as I can, and because I am seeking joy, I find joy. Being positive might not save you from cancer, but I can almost guarantee(保证) you that if you are positive, you will find meaning in your life, as well as happiness in every day that you live.

33.After the author found out she had cancer, ______.
A.she was sure she would survive
B.she tried to enjoy her life and help others
C.she refused to go through painful treatment
D.she was quite troubled by the seriousness of her illness
34.It can be concluded from the author’s experiences that positive thinking ______.
A.makes cancer treatment less painful for patients
B.makes it much easier for people to accept bad news
C.prepares family members for what may happen next
D.helps create a good environment for patients
35.The author wrote this article mainly to ______.
A.tell patients how to fight against illness
B.explain the danger of cancer to readers
C.stress the importance of a positive attitude

第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Humans are born and wired to compete with one another. Influencers compare how many “likes” they have on social media. Millionaires envy billionaires. Famous actors complain about the Oscar or Emmy that should have been theirs.
36 On the contrary, if left unmanaged it can create misery (不幸) for ourselves and others, at least when it comes to happiness and longevity (长寿).
This conclusion comes from research conducted on Olympic athletes. In a 1995 study, scholars studied the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. They examined the medalists both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台). 37
More recent research has looked at the life span (寿命) of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study tracked the average longevity of those representing the U. S. in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936. The results showed that the athletes whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by a solid (不间断的) four years, living to 76. But first prize went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy explanation: “ 38 ” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser. This is because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists while the bronze winners compare themselves favourably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all.
This hypothesis (假设) is based on a large body of literature (文献) showing the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like losers. 39
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. More likely, you will spend most of your time feeling like a silver medalist. 40 It would be much more advisable, then, to aim for healthy competition in which you do your best without expectation of being the absolute winner. The only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
A.Dissatisfactory competition results may negatively influence health.
B.In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves, and thus happier.
C.It is discovered that the bronze winners appeared happier on average than the silver medalists.
D.Comparing our own circumstances with the unfortunate lot of others is a reliable path to general well-being.
E.Although the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it does not always lead to human flourishing
F.You may be always longing, pinning your hope on a single outcome, but eventually ending up with failure and disappointment.
G.People commonly feel bad about themselves after checking out the lives of others on social media who post only about their victories and celebrations.

36.根据上文“Humans are born and wired to compete with one another. Influencers compare how many “likes” they have on social media. Millionaires envy billionaires. Famous actors complain about the Oscar or Emmy that should have been theirs. (人类生来就具有相互竞争的天性。网红们比较自己在社交媒体上获得了多少“赞”。百万富翁羡慕亿万富翁。著名演员抱怨本应属于他们的奥斯卡或艾美奖。)”以及下文“On the contrary, if left unmanaged it can create misery (不幸) for ourselves and others, at least when it comes to happiness and longevity (长寿). (相反,如果不加以管理,它至少会在幸福和长寿方面给自己和他人带来不幸。)”可知,上文描述了人类天生的竞争心态,以及这种心态在不同人群中的表现,下文转折指出竞争心态如果不加以管理会带来不幸,E选项“Although the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it does not always lead to human flourishing (兴盛). 37.根据上文“In a 1995 study, scholars studied the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. They examined the medalists both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台). 38.根据上文“The study had a handy explanation: (这项研究有一个简便的解释:)”以及下文“In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser. This is because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists while the bronze winners compare themselves favourably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. 故选A项。

40.根据上文“The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. More likely, you will spend most of your time feeling like a silver medalist. (每天追求金牌的世俗幸福策略是愚蠢的。更有可能的是,你会大部分时间都感觉自己像是一个银牌获得者。)”以及下文“It would be much more advisable, then, to aim for healthy competition in which you do your best without expectation of being the absolute winner. The only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. (因此,更明智的做法是追求健康的竞争,在这种竞争中,你尽自己最大的努力,而不期望成为绝对的赢家。你唯一需要比较的人就是你自己)”可知,上文批评了追求金牌的策略,并指出这种策略可能让人大部分时间都感觉自己像是一个失败者,下文提出了关于健康竞争的建议,F选项“You may be always longing, pinning your hope on a single outcome, but eventually ending up with failure and disappointment.
Everyone has things about their life that they would like to change. As the early 6th-century Roman philosopher Boethius put it, “One has abundant riches, but is 41 by his ignoble (不光彩的) birth. Another is conspicuous (引人注目的) for his nobility, but through the embarrassments of poverty would prefer to be little known. A third, in 42 of both, regrets the loneliness of an unwedded life. ”
Think about the 43 of your stress. For example, maybe you are struggling to find a fulfilling job. Or maybe you are not getting much out of your friendships. To improve the situation, you might 44 moving, getting a new job and meeting new people.
However, these solutions might be impractical at this point in your life. And in any case, you might also 45 that your problems will continue to follow you regardless of where you go, because, well, you can’t move away from you.
Now I am going to tell you a little secret. Changing how you feel can actually be much easier to accomplish than changing your 46 reality, even if it seems unnatural. Your emotions can seem like they are out of your control even at the best of times, and even more so during a 47 . This can be blamed in part on biology. Negative emotions such as anger and fear stimulate the amygdala (杏仁体), which increases one’s awareness of 48 and improves one’s ability to recognize and avoid danger. This makes good 49 sense: Half a million years ago, taking time to manage your emotions would have made you a tiger’s lunch.
In the modern world, you no longer need your amygdala to help you outrun the tiger. 50 , you use it to handle the nonlethal (非致命的) problems that annoy you all day long. And 51 stress often leads to maladaptive coping strategies in modern life. Such strategies not only fail to provide long-term relief but also 52 our problems by increasing the frequency of our feelings of depression and anxiety. When these kinds of coping mechanisms fail to help us, we can easily find ourselves 53 the prospect of trying to manage our negative emotions, which may lead us to try to change our outside world.
In fact, Boethius wrote the words I quoted above from a prison cell while awaiting execution (处决). Boethius could not change his circumstances, but he could and did change his 54 toward them. “So true is it that nothing is wretched (不愉快的), but thinking makes it so,” he wrote. To take this to heart and act on it is one of the greatest secrets to 55 well-being, but it does not have to be a secret. If Boethius could do it, so can you.

Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(嘟囔声)when Ms.Yates was about to speak. Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can’t tell you 58 pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, 59 I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. 60 I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth your children, in my imagination.”

【答案】
56.was wheeled 57.who 58.how 59.but 60.Although 61.others 62.chosen 63.seeing / to see 64.deafening 65.because

______ had few kind words…是定语从句,先行词是an old woman ,指人,故填who。
58.考查从属连词。句意:“来到这里,我说不出有多高兴。”_____ pleased I am to be here是宾语从句,所填词是宾语从句的引导词,修饰表语形容词pleased,根据句意,应是“多么高兴”,故填how。

比较:
He thinks it is safer to drive himself than (to) let me drive.

I have always been passionate about football, but my enthusiasm was often overshadowed by others who always laughed at my short stature and fat figure, they would laugh secretly, copying how I walked with big steps and making fun of my love for the game. Their laughter was always there in the locker rooms and on the sidelines, reminding me that not everyone shared my passion.
One day, while attending a match with a team named Boreham Wood, I had an unexpected encounter with a famous football player, Chris Bush! He was rather ordinary- looking, even a little short and chubby, but he's the center of attention on the court. Everyone was attracted by his superb skills. Watching him play, I felt a surge of hope and inspiration. His skill and determination seemed to defy the doubts that had been cast upon me. Gathering up my courage, I approached him with a mix of nervousness and excitement when the game was ended. I introduced myself and expressed my admiration for his game. To my surprise, he stopped and engaged in a conversation with me. I shared my struggles, how the constant mockery (嘲笑) made me feel like an outsider in a world that celebrated height and lean muscle. Chris listened carefully, his eyes reflecting a depth of understanding that only someone who has faced their own battles could possess.
He shared his own story, he had once been in my shoes, ridiculed for his size and told he would never make it in football. Chris told me how he used his size to his advantage, how he became quicker, smarter, and more determined than anyone else on the field. He told me that football was a game of heart and determination, not just physical attributes(特征). His words were like a beacon of hope, and I felt a renewed sense of determination.

I spent hours practicing dribbling, passing, and shooting, and I also worked on my speed and agility. Every day, I reminded myself of Chris’s words and the belief he had in me.
In a competition half a year later, Chris watched the game I participated in. I was nervous at first, but as the game progressed, I felt more and more confident. I played with all my heart and used the skills I had learned. To my surprise, I played really well and helped my team win the game. After the game, Chris came up to me and congratulated me. Inspired by his words, I regained my confidence. I started training harder than ever before. I focused on improving my skills and using my size to my advantage, just as Chris had advised.
He said he was proud of me and that I had proved that determination and hard work could overcome any obstacles. I felt incredibly happy and grateful for his support and inspiration.

B.To show the importance of laughter.

32.According to the first two paragraphs, studies show that _________.
A.positive thinking can save patients from cancer
B.negative thinking is very likely to make cancer worse
C.positive thinking cannot help patients get rid of cancer
D.one’s attitude has a direct effect on cancer
33.After the author found out she had cancer, ______.
A.she was sure she would survive
B.she tried to enjoy her life and help others
C.she refused to go through painful treatment
D.she was quite troubled by the seriousness of her illness
34.It can be concluded from the author’s experiences that positive thinking ______.
A.makes cancer treatment less painful for patients
B.makes it much easier for people to accept bad news
C.prepares family members for what may happen next
D.helps create a good environment for patients
35.The author wrote this article mainly to ______.
A.tell patients how to fight against illness
B.explain the danger of cancer to readers
C.stress the importance of a positive attitude
D.help readers find meaning and happiness in life
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12.
第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)
第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分)

32.According to the first two paragraphs, studies show that _________.
A.positive thinking can save patients from cancer
B.negative thinking is very likely to make cancer worse
C.positive thinking cannot help patients get rid of cancer
D.one’s attitude has a direct effect on cancer
33.After the author found out she had cancer, ______.
A.she was sure she would survive
B.she tried to enjoy her life and help others
C.she refused to go through painful treatment
D.she was quite troubled by the seriousness of her illness
34.It can be concluded from the author’s experiences that positive thinking ______.
A.makes cancer treatment less painful for patients
B.makes it much easier for people to accept bad news
C.prepares family members for what may happen next
D.helps create a good environment for patients
35.The author wrote this article mainly to ______.
A.tell patients how to fight against illness
B.explain the danger of cancer to readers
C.stress the importance of a positive attitude
D.help readers find meaning and happiness in life
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12.
第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)
第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman 57 had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak:“I can’t tell you 58 pleased I am to be here.
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “ It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and 61 would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your 62 (choose) path.”
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than 63 (see) the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a 64 (deafen)roar(呼喊).
