Growing up with a disability can be challenging. For parents, however, there’s a fear that their kids will be treated poorly by their peers (同龄人). However, a recent experience shared by a mother has given her great hope and reassurance for her son’s future.
It all began when the mother received a call from one of her former high school teachers. This teacher’s biology class recently began a discussion on genetics. Knowing that this mom has a kid with genetic deletion syndrome (缺失综合征), she was hoping Mom would be open to visiting her class. That way, she could talk about her own experience. Mom was happy to do so, and she brought little Sully with her. Any nervousness she may have felt melted away the moment these sweet high school students responded to her presentation.
“I’d like to keep him little forever” Mom admits in her post, “but it’s not such a bad thing if he eventually grows up surrounded by people like those children.”
As soon as Mom was done talking, these high school students were eager to get to know Sully better. So, they sat in a circle around him, allowing him to play however he wanted. In turn, they gave him the very best reactions. They can really tell how much Sully is loving the attention and love!
The video of this touching moment was shared online, and it quickly resonated (共鸣) with many people. One person commented, “These kids truly understand what it means to be kind and inclusive. They didn’t see Sully’s differences as something to fear or judge; they saw them as something to hug.” Another added, “It’s amazing how these teenagers can show such genuine care and understanding. They remind us that compassion and acceptance can come from anyone, no matter how young they are.”
4. What is the parents’ fear with a disabled kid?
A The child will be limited to wheelchairs.
B. The child will be mistreated for disabilities.
C. The child might not receive good education.
D. The child might not have a bright future.
5. Why did the teacher ask the mom to come to her class?
A. To have the mom talk about genetics.
B. To let her students discuss with the mom.
C. To help the students better understand genetic conditions.
D. To encourage the mom to be open about visiting the class.
6. What did the mom intend to express in her post?
A. She was relieved to see her child accepted.
B. She was grateful for the teacher’s invitation.
C. She wanted her kid surrounded by children.
D. She wanted to highlight the importance of kindness.
7. What do people’s comments on the video indicate?
A. The students are recognized.
B. The students are very mature for their age.
C. The students are not aware of Sully’s condition.
D. The students were acting as if they were interested.

In 1785, Jeremy Bentham designed the perfect prison: Cells circle a tower from which an unseen guard can observe any prisoner at will.
Many of us will recognize this feeling of constant surveillance (监视) with so many closed-circuit television cameras (闭路监控) and knowing facial recognition with artificial intelligence can put names to faces. So how does being watched affect us? In 1898, psychologist Norman Triplett showed that cyclists raced harder in the presence of others. But being watched doesn’t just change our behavior. And now a new study reveals how being watched affects unconscious (潜意识的) processing in our brain. In this era of surveillance, researchers say, the findings raise concerns about our collective mental health.
Being looked at grabs our attention, as demonstrated by the stare-in-a-crowd effect: among a sea of faces that aren’t looking at us, we immediately detect a single one that is. This ability is likely applied to detect danger, which may explain why being watched can cause psychological discomfort and physical fight-or-flight responses, such as sweating.
On a conscious level, we behave differently when we are watched. We become more socially friendly, meaning we’re more likely to give and less likely to cheat or leave junk. Some studies have even suggested that theft or some bad behaviors could be reduced merely by posting pictures of eyes.
The effects of surveillance on behavior go even deeper into our brain’s unconscious processing of the world around us. In a study published last December, researchers showed that being watched sped participants’ unconscious analysis of faces.
Surveillance, then, seems to put our social processing into high shift. “The conclusion would be that being watched drives this permanent survival response into overload,” Kiley Seymour of the University of Technology Sydney says.
The competence harmed by surveillance “are those that allow us to focus on what we’re doing: attention, working memory, and so on,” says Belletier, a psychologist at University of Clermont Auvergne in France. “If these processes are taxed by being monitored, you’d expect deteriorating capacity to concentrate.” This body of research suggests that bringing more surveillance into workplaces — usually an attempt to boost productivity — could actually backfire. It also suggests that online testing environments, where students are watched through webcams (网络摄像头) by human inspectors or AI, could lead to lower performance.
8. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning Norman Triplett?
A. To back up Jeremy Bentham. B. To explain different feelings.
C To show the impact of being watched. D. To introduce the behavior change.
9. What’s the benefit of being watched according to the text?
A. Helping a cyclist win the race. B. Helping find a friend sooner.
C. Helping reduce crimes on the street. D. Helping keep the dustbin empty.
10. What is Seymour’s attitude to being watched?
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
11. What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “deteriorating” in the last paragraph?
A. Worsening. B. Extraordinary. C. Additional. D. Averaged.
D
There are countless metaphors (隐喻) for memory. It’s a leaky bucket, a steel trap, or words written in sand. But one of the most novel engages Lego bricks. A memory is like a Lego tower. This metaphor is beautifully clarified by psychologists Ciara Greene and Gillian Murphy in their new book, Memory Lane (《记忆之路》).
“Perhaps the comparison speaks to me because I have watched my kids create complex villages of Lego bricks, only to be taken apart, put away and reconstructed, always with a similar structure but with minor and occasionally major changes. These villages’ blueprints are largely stable, but also flexible.”
Imagine your own memory lane as a series of buildings, changed in ways both small and big each time you call them to mind. “As we walk down the memory lane, the buildings we pass — our memories of individual events — are under constant reconstruction,” Greene added.
The book covers a lot of dimensions, from how we form memories to how delicate those memories really are. Readers may find it interesting (or upsetting) to learn how bad we all are at remembering why we did something, from small choices, like buying an album, to significant ones, such as a vote on a bill. People change their reasoning — or at least, their memories of their reasoning — on these sorts of events all the time.
A modern dilemma also comes up, whether fake news and deep-fake videos have particularly swung our memories or even create false ones. Don’t panic. “We don’t need to generate fears of a digital future where our memories can already be changed very effectively by non-digital means,” said Greene.
Greene and Murphy offer another comforting message again: Our memories are unreliable and faulty, but these slips are features, not bugs. “Forgetting may make our brains more efficient to focus on the important memories. It may even keep us happier by allowing time to ease the painful experiences,” the authors write. “Instead of attempting to force your memory to be something it is not, we advocate accepting it just the way it is.”
12. What inspires the Lego tower metaphor?
A. The change in the rebuilt similar Lego models,
B. Memory of writing in sand.
C. Comparison of different villages.
D. A building along the street.
13. Why is “buying an album” mentioned?
A. To show how our memories are formed.
B. To prove we will forget to buy the album.
C. To illustrate we will forget things.
D. To demonstrate we are changeable.
14. How should we face up to the changed memories?
A. Just forget the changed parts.
B. Figure out the fake information.
C. Judge to ensure our memories are true.
D. Accept the imperfection of our memories.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Memory Lane: New Metaphor for Memory B. Memory Lane: Unreliable but Acceptable
C. Memory Lane: Informative and Delicate D. Memory Lane: Happy and Stable

At twelve, I was the new kid in a busy city school. There were thirty kids in my class, all different. The group of ten boys made me feel like an outsider. They laughed at me about my glasses, my quiet nature, and my old backpack. I felt lonely and out of place.
I spent many nights feeling sad after my parents told me to “give it time” and that “they’ll accept you once they get to know you.” I hoped they were right.
Then, a few months later, our school had a talent show. I decided to recite a poem about never giving up. I practiced a lot. When I went on stage, I was nervous, but I did my best. The audience was quiet at first, but then they clapped loudly. I won first place.
After that, the boys couldn’t ignore me anymore. They liked my confidence and even said nice things about my poem. I was invited to join their lunchtime basketball games and study groups. I made friends and felt like I belonged.
One day, a new boy named Alex joined our class. He was tall and shy, with a shy smile and a backpack that looked like it had seen better days. He sat in the corner of the classroom, looking nervous and out of place. The other kids didn’t seem to notice him, and he looked like he was trying to disappear into the background. His fingers nervously twisted (扭曲) the belt of his backpack, and every now and then, he would hunch (躬身) his shoulders, as if trying to take up less space.
Instantly, memories of my own first days at this school flooded back. I vividly remembered the feeling of being an outsider, the uncertainty and the longing to fit in.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Hello, guys,
I’m glad to share my experience in reviewing English before the finals.
I usually review the passages and questions where I have made mistakes, especially about the structures and the logical thinking in comprehension. This can improve my confidence in dealing with English reading, because some passages share the same structure and the same question forms. So practically, this will help me avoid similar mistakes in examinations. Of course, we are unique selves and I believe we all need to try and improve our own learning strategies.
Wish all good luck. Thanks for listening.

【答案】
I walked over to Alex with a friendly smile. “Hey, I’m Jake. It can be tough at first, but I’m here to help,” I said softly, trying to put him at ease. Alex looked up at me, with surprise in his eyes, and then offered a shy smile. “Thanks,” he said quietly. I showed him around the school, pointing out the library, the gym, and the cafeteria. I introduced him to a few teachers and some friendly students. When passing the basketball court, I saw the excitement in his eyes. “Want to join us after school?” I asked. He hesitated but agreed.
The next day, Alex showed up at the basketball court. He sat on the sidelines, watching intently. I handed him a ball. “Want to give it a try?” I asked. He nodded, a bit nervously. I taught him the basics. With each successful shot, his confidence grew. By the end of the afternoon, he was laughing and high-fiving with the rest of the team. Alex found his place. Now, he was “in”, too. Just like me, he overcame the initial barriers and felt like he belonged.
