It’s commonly said that flying is safer than riding a bus or train. Statistics do show that airplane accidents happen much less than road accidents. While this is true, flying still has some risks. One risk is bird strikes—when a plane hits a bird while flying.
Bird strikes usually happen when a plane is taking off (起飞) or landing. In 2022, there were 16,960 animal strikes in the United States and most of them were bird strikes.
Although most bird strikes do not damage (破坏) planes, some can be very serious. In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 hit a group of birds after taking off. Both of its engines (引擎) stopped working, and the plane had to land on the Hudson River in New York City. Luckily, all passengers were safe. Most birds are small, but even a small bird can break windows or other parts of the plane. Big birds can be even more dangerous because they can damage the engines, making it harder for the plane to fly safely. Sadly, bird strikes almost always kill the birds.
To stop bird strikes, airports (机场) use many ways. For example, some use loud sounds to scare birds away, and others remove birds’ food source (来源) and homes by covering grassy areas. However, birds can get used to loud sounds, and covering green land is bad for the environment.
Now, airports are trying new ideas. At Salt Lake City Airport, people let pigs eat the eggs of nearby birds. At Southwest Florida Airport, people use dogs to drive birds away. Some airports even use high technology to find birds. With these new ideas, people hope to keep birds away and make flying safer in the future.
7. When do bird strikes usually happen?
A. When a plane is flying high.
B. When a plane is taking off or landing.
C. When a plane is preparing to take off.
8. Why did the writer write Paragraph 3?
A. To show the dangers of bird strikes.
B. To stress that small birds probably do not hit planes.
C. To argue that most bird strikes do not damage planes.
9. The underlined word “remove” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. turn down B. look for C. take away
10. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Safety of Flying
B. Bird Strikes and Solutions
C. The Danger of Birds Near Airports

Recently, the topic of “the country is calling you to lose weight (减肥)” has become very popular. The Chinese government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” program lasting from 2024 to 2026 to solve the weight problem.
Being overweight and being obese (肥胖) have become serious problems in China. According to a report, about 10.4 percent of children under the age of six in China are overweight, while nearly 20 percent of Chinese people between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight or obese.
Doctors use BMI (BMI=weight/height2) to quickly check if a person is normal, overweight, or obese. For adults, a healthy BMI falls within the range (范围) of 18.5 to 23.9. A BMI between 24 and 27.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 28 or higher shows obesity. Also, doctors advise people to measure their waist (测量腰围): men should keep it under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
To make the program go well, schools have organized activities like weekly walking, bike riding, and dancing. In the community, doctors have helped people with weight problems. They give them good ideas on what to eat and how to exercise. The government hopes that families can join in. Parents can cook healthy meals at home. Families can also go for walks or bike rides together on weekends.
This program is not for a short time, but for the long term. The goal (目标) is to help people live a happy and healthy life.

Recently, the topic of “the country is calling you to lose weight (减肥)” has become very popular. The Chinese government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” program lasting from 2024 to 2026 to solve the weight problem.
Being overweight and being obese (肥胖的) have become serious problems in China.
