Emerson, my 11-year-old daughter, is on a wild ride with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and our postman, Doug. She has a serious letter-writing habit and keeps in touch with her favorite people. If you’ve been the receiver of her hand-decorated letters and envelopes, then I know they really make your day.
A letter from Emerson is likely to include some art, a joke and enough questions to guarantee a response. But when she wrote a letter to Doug, she put something new in it. “You may know me as the person living here that writes lots of letters…You’re very important to me, helping me stay in touch with friends. I cheer people up with my letters, and you do that too!”, Emerson wrote.
The next day, a package arrived with two letters. One was from Doug and the other from his superior, Sara, saying she had shared Emerson’s letter in the internal newsletter (内部通讯) of the USPS and believed many postal workers wanted to thank Emerson. Emerson was so pleased with Sara’s letter that it upset me much, for the possible result of no reply would come as a blow to her.
Surprisingly, today, we saw Doug come with two boxes of letters from around the country. These letters were so human, filled with stories about family, pets and a sense of kindness. But there was something more in them. People felt seen — some for the first time in a long time. “I work alone in a small rural post office…” “Not many people think about how hard we work…”. Emerson wrote back seriously.
I’m sharing this not because I’m a proud dad, but because it’s relatively easy, if we take the time, to give others links they need to be good-human connection. Emerson did this daringly. Her lesson to me is simple: It’s the small things that matter most. We all want to be seen, known and loved.
Send a letter. Give a call. Take a step of bravery, like Emerson.
4. Why did Emerson write Doug a letter?
A. To cheer him up. B. To ask for a wild ride.
C. To express her thanks. D. To show hand-decorated envelopes.
5. What does the underlined phrase “People felt seen” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. People thought they worked too hard.
B. People felt that they were cared about by others.
C. People saw Doug come with two boxes of letters.
D. People working in small rural post offices feel very lonely.
6. Which word can best describe Emerson?
A. Optimistic. B. Polite. C. Caring. D. Ambitious.
7. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A. One’s words reflect one’s thinking. B. Kids should be encouraged to be brave.
C. There is kindness to be found everywhere. D. Connection makes a difference.
C 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第二段“But when she wrote a letter to Doug, she put something new in it. “You may know me as the person living here that writes lots of letters…You’re very important to me, helping me stay in touch with friends. I cheer people up with my letters, and you do that too!”, Emerson wrote. (但当她给Doug写信时,她在信中加入了一些新的东西。“你可能知道我住在这里,经常写信……你对我很重要,帮我和朋友们保持联系。我用我的信让人们高兴起来,你也这样做!”,Emerson写道)”可推知,Emerson给Doug写信是为了表达她的感谢。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文““I work alone in a small rural post office…” “Not many people think about how hard we work…”. (“我一个人在农村的小邮局工作……”“没有多少人想到我们工作有多辛苦……”)”以及划线句子后的“some for the first time in a long time. (有些人是很久以来的第一次)”可知,这些人第一次感到有人在关心他们。所以People felt seen为“人们觉得他们被别人关心”之意。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“A letter from Emerson is likely to include some art, a joke and enough questions to guarantee a response. But when she wrote a letter to Doug, she put something new in it. (Emerson的信可能会包含一些艺术作品、一个笑话和足够多的问题,以确保得到回复。但当她给Doug写信时,她在信中加入了一些新的东西)”可推知,Emerson在写信时会考虑收信人的感受,因此她是个体贴的人。选项A“Optimistic (乐观的)”;选项B“Polite (友好的)”;选项C“Caring (体贴的)”;选项D“Ambitious (雄心勃勃的)”。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“I’m sharing this not because I’m a proud dad, but because it’s relatively easy, if we take the time, to give others links they need to be good-human connection. Emerson did this daringly. Her lesson to me is simple: It’s the small things that matter most. We all want to be seen, known and loved. (我分享这些并不是因为我是一个自豪的父亲,而是因为这相对容易,如果我们花时间,给别人提供他们需要的良好的人际联系。Emerson大胆地做到了这一点。她教给我的很简单:小事最重要。我们都希望被关注、被了解、被爱)”可推断,作者认为联系可以帮助他人,也就是联系很重要。故选D。
C
In the risky world of nuclear arms control, Princeton student Lepowsky is exploring how robots can make inspections more accurate and acceptable to host nations worried about invasive (侵入的) traditional methods. His latest research has led to a robot performing inspections without saving sensitive information.
“The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.
The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot. Robots offer advantages over human inspectors:they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details. The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.
Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation (防扩散).
Predicting when the robot might be used in the field is difficult. “It’s easy to say, today, it’s not very realistic, but you have to be ready for if and when it becomes possible,” said Lepowsky. Research into this problem is very active. Because arms control is changing, the specific objectives of future agreements are hard to predict. “But we can hope they will be positive, and we need to be ready, technically. “
8. In which aspect is Lepowsky’s robot different from human inspectors?
A Data security. B. Memory capacity. C. Social acceptance. D. User friendliness.
9. What is said about the robot in paragraph 3?
A. Its accurate system. B. Its privacy risks.
C. Its design mechanism. D. Its operational problems.
10. What does Lepowsky like about his work?
A. Scientific research data. B. Real-time technical cooperation.
C. In-depth theoretical studies. D. Integrated knowledge across fields.
11. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Princeton’s “Forgetful” Robots in Global Security
B. No-Memory Robots:The Future of Nuclear Checks?
C. Nuclear Arms Control:Robots or Human Inspectors?
D. Lepowsky’s “Curious” Robots for Radiation Detection
A 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据文章第二段““The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.( Lepowsky说:“东道国很可能不希望人类核查员到处窥探。但即便是机器人也有会采集数据的内存和传感器。” 其目标是在机器人不保存信息的情况下进行高可信度的核查。例如,机器人不会保存辐射测量数据,也不会绘制敏感区域的平面图。)”可知,东道国不希望人类核查员到处窥探,而Lepowsky的机器人的目标是在不保存信息,如不保存辐射测量数据、不绘制敏感区域平面图的情况下进行核查。所以Lepowsky的机器人与人类核查员在数据安全方面不同。故选A。
在文章第三段中,首先提到“The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot.(这款新的样机是基于教育机器人iRobot Create 3平台制造的。)” 接着阐述“Robots offer advantages over human inspectors: they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details.(与人类核查员相比,机器人具有一些优势:它们能够承受更高的辐射水平,工作更加稳定一致,而且成本可能更低。它们还可以通过编程来赢得信任,比如不使用摄像头以避免拍摄到不必要的细节。)”介绍了机器人相较于人类核查员的优势,以及为了赢得信任所采用的编程方式,比如不使用摄像头。还提到“The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.(关于这款机器人的想法最初来自Lepowsky的导师Glaser,他对制造一个能够进行高度精确的核武器核查、但事后会忘掉一切的“健忘机器人”很感兴趣。这引出了一个更有意思的想法:“我们不是让它事后忘掉,而是从一开始就不记录任何信息。” Lepowsky说。他认为这一特点可以让那些担心隐私问题的东道国放心。)” 讲述了机器人设计理念的起源以及最终确定的“从一开始就不记录信息”这一特色,这些都围绕着机器人的设计机制展开。所以关于第三段中提到的机器人,主要说的是它的设计机制。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation(防扩散).( Lepowsky喜欢自己工作的跨学科性质——既利用了他在机器人技术方面的专业知识,也运用了他在政策方面的专长——而且他喜欢这份工作需要广泛的知识,而不仅仅是深度的专业知识。
B“No-Memory Robots: The Future of Nuclear Checks?(无记忆机器人:核核查的未来?)”
D
As a writer specializing in psychology and human cognition (认知) ,I’ve explored countless tricks to boost brainpower. Yet, few have proven as surprisingly effective as the ancient practice of illeism. Politicians often use this device to sound more objective, as Julius Caesar did in his account of the Gallic War, writing “Caesar avenged (为……报仇) the public” instead of “I avenged the public.” Simply put, illeism is the act of referring to oneself in the third person instead of the first person.
Talking about yourself this way might sound overly formal or unusual to modern ears, but science says it works wonders. When tough decisions come knocking, speaking in the third person can help you stay calm, cutting through those messy emotions that often cloud our judgment. It’s like giving your brain a little space to see the big picture.
Research by Igor Grossmann at the University of Waterloo shows that we’re naturally better at being “wise” when dealing with other people’s problems than our own. This is known as Solomon’s Paradox (悖论), which explains why giving your best friend advice is a breeze (微风), but solving your own is a drama.
Can illeism help solve this paradox? Grossmann’s research suggests it can. By shifting to the third person, we step back from our negative emotions and gain another perspective. Studies show that people who tried this displayed more modesty — basically, they made clearer decisions and leveled up their wisdom game. One study even found that participants who journaled in the third person for a month started seeing everyday situations in a whole new light. They also reported feeling less stressed and more positive.
I’ve tried it myself, and honestly, it works! Whether it’s challenging work decisions, family dilemmas, or handling friendships, this little mental shift has helped me see things more clearly and act more thoughtfully. Sure, it might sound a little odd at first, but it’s incredibly effective. If you’ re looking for a fun, easy way to clear your head, why not give it a shot? Who knows— you might just discover your inner Caesar.
12. Why is Julius Caesar’s example cited in the first paragraph?
A. To reveal the source of illeism.
B. To prove the effectiveness of illeism.
C. To show the intelligence of politicians.
D. To explain the development of a language.
13. Which of the following sayings best reflects Solomon’s Paradox?
A. Out of sight, out of mind.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. A problem shared is a problem halved.
D. You can’t read the label from inside the jar.
14. How does illeism aid decision-making?
A. People can accept others’ advice with modesty.
B. People can adjust personal habits to handle issues.
C. People can perfect their judgment by increasing wisdom.
D. People can gain a fresh perspective with positive emotions.
15. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A psychology blog. B. A historical biography.
C. A self-help guide. D. A scientific journal.
B 13. D 14. D 15. A
第一段中“Yet, few have proven as surprisingly effective as the ancient practice of illeism. (然而,很少有像illeism这种古老的做法被证明如此惊人地有效。)”以及“Politicians often use this device to sound more objective, as Julius Caesar did in his account of the Gallic War, writing “Caesar avenged (为……报仇) the public” instead of “I avenged the public.” Simply put, illeism is the act of referring to oneself in the third person instead of the first person.(政治家们经常使用这种手法来使自己听起来更客观,就像朱利叶斯·凯撒在他的《高卢战记》中所做的那样,他写道“凯撒为公众复仇了”,而不是“我为公众复仇了”。简而言之,illeism就是用第三人称指代自己,而不是用第一人称。)”可知,第一段中提到Julius Caesar的例子是为了证明像illeism这种古老的做法被证明如此惊人地有效,即为了证明illeism的有效性。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Research by Igor Grossmann at the University of Waterloo shows that we’re naturally better at being “wise” when dealing with other people’s problems than our own. This is known as Solomon’s Paradox (悖论), which explains why giving your best friend advice is a breeze (微风), but solving your own is a drama.(滑铁卢大学伊戈尔·格罗斯曼的研究表明,在处理别人的问题时,我们天生就比处理自己的问题时更“明智”。这被称为所罗门悖论,它解释了为什么给最好的朋友提建议轻而易举,但解决自己的问题却充满曲折。)”可知,所罗门悖论指的是人们在处理别人的问题时往往比处理自己的问题时更明智。选项D“You can’t read the label from inside the jar. (你往往难以看清自己的问题)”恰好反映了这一悖论,意味着人们往往难以看清自己的问题,就像无法从罐子内部看清标签一样。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“By shifting to the third person, we step back from our negative emotions and gain another perspective. (通过切换到第三人称,我们从负面情绪中抽身出来,获得了另一个视角)”以及“Studies show that people who tried this displayed more modesty — basically, they made clearer decisions and leveled up their wisdom game.(研究表明,尝试过这种方法的人表现得更谦虚——基本上,他们做出了更清晰的决定,提升了他们的智慧水平。)” 因此,D选项“People can gain a fresh perspective with positive emotions.(人们可以用积极的情绪获得一个新的视角)”符合题意。
故选A。
Stanford researchers have found that students from middle school to college are struggling to assess the credibility of the online articles. Here are a few practices recommended by the researchers.
___16___. Established news organizations usually have standard addresses that you are probably familiar with. So addresses with such strange endings like www.xxcom.com” should put you on guard. ___17___. This is necessary even when the pages on the websites look familiar and professional.
Look at the quotes in a story. Or rather, look at the lack of quotes. Most reliable publications quote multiple sources who are professionals in the fields they talk about. ___18___.
Search for the images in the story. Pictures should be accurate in illustrating what the story is about. However, this often doesn’t happen. If people who write the news story don’t even leave their homes or interview anyone for the story, it’s unlikely that they take their own pictures. ___19___. You can do this by right-clicking on the images and choosing to search for them. If the pictures appear in a lot of stories about many different topics, there’s a good chance that the story is unreliable.
Stop the spreading of misinformation. If you see your friends sharing obviously unreliable information, kindly tell them it’s not real. ___20___. Everyone should help fix the misinformation problem.
A. Check your articles
B. Pay attention to the spelling of the website address
C. Then you need to dig around more to see if they can be trusted
D. If you do these steps, you’re helping yourself and the publisher
E. Do a little detective work and search for the photos in a search engine
F. If it’s a serious issue, they are usually supported by more reliable sources
G. Don’t shy away from these warnings even if they might be uncomfortable
B 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. G
根据上文“So addresses with such strange endings like www.xxcom.com” should put you on guard.(所以像www.xxcom.com这样奇怪结尾的地址应该引起你的警惕)”以及后文“This is necessary even when the pages on the websites look familiar and professional.(这是必要的,即使网站上的页面看起来熟悉和专业)”可知,上文提到了奇怪结尾的网址,后文提到了某种做法是必要的,可知本句是在说明具体做法。
根据上文“Look at the quotes in a story. Or rather, look at the lack of quotes. Most reliable publications quote multiple sources who are professionals in the fields they talk about.(看看故事中的引语。或者更确切地说,看看没有引用。大多数可靠的出版物引用了他们所谈论的领域的专业人士的多个来源)”可知,本段主要建议通过引用来判断,F选项中sources对应上文sources。故F项“如果文章讨论的问题很重要,文章会引用更多、更可靠的信息来源”符合语境。故选F。
【19题详解】
根据本段主题句“Search for the images in the story.(搜索故事中的图像)”及空后“You can do this by right-clicking on the images and choosing to search for them.(您可以通过右键单击图像并选择搜索它们来做到这一点)”可知,本段主要建议搜索图片,且后文提到了搜索方法,E选项中search for the photos对应search for them。
根据上文“Stop the spreading of misinformation. If you see your friends sharing obviously unreliable information, kindly tell them it’s not real.(停止错误信息的传播。

On a summer vacation morning, I went to a bookstore with my mom. As we stepped through the entrance, a large sign immediately captured my attention. It read, “Books: Open Doors to New Worlds. Discover, Dream, Delight.” These words seemed to dance in the sunlight, leading me to explore all the wonders they promised.
When we made our way between the shelves, I spotted a beautiful book with a cover that was a masterpiece of colors and images. Unconsciously, my hand reached out to trace the outlines of the illustrations. I turned to my mom, my eyes begging for this book, but she shook her head with a sad expression. Our family was going through a tough time financially, and there was no room for such an expensive purchase. Disappointed, I dragged my feet and left.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation, I found myself back at the store. I slipped the book into my bag, my hands trembling with a mix of excitement and guilt. Just as I was about to leave, the store owner noticed me. I froze, my face flushing with shame as I was caught red-handed. He stared at me, from whose eyes I could feel the judgement. I wanted to disappear, but there was no escape. With a shaky voice, I admitted stealing the book, and promised to make things right. As I walked out, the sign seemed to scold me. It was a reminder that the world I entered by a wrong path was disheartening.
I walked home slowly, each step filled with fear. When I saw my mom, I burst into tears and told her the truth. She looked disappointed, but there was a glimmer of relief in her eyes that I was honest. She hugged me and said softly, “You made a mistake, but you had the courage to face it. Remember, there are always right ways to get what you want.” I nodded. After a moment of silence, my mom said, “Let’s make things right.”

When I finished my summer job, the owner handed me the book with a smile.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As we walked back into the store, my heart was so heavy. However, encouraged by my mom, I gathered the courage and apologized to the store owner. Much to my surprise, the owner came up with an idea that he would give me the book as a reward for helping him in the store. Following his instructions carefully, I worked hard by dusting book covers and arranging books neatly on the shelves. As I was engaged in these tasks during the vacation, I came to realize the value of earning something through honest work.
When I finished my summer job, the owner handed me the book with a smile. I received the book with a sense of pride and gratitude. The owner patted me on the shoulder and offered words of praise. My mom was also proud of me for working diligently for my small dream. This scene made me even more aware of the significance of my efforts. As I walked out of the store, the sign seemed to smile at me. From that moment on, it was a constant reminder that a delightful new world should be unlocked through honesty and kindness.

Surprisingly today, we saw Doug come with two boxes of letters from around the country.

A. Data security. B. Memory capacity. C. Social acceptance. D. User friendliness.
9. What is said about the robot in paragraph 3?
A. Its accurate system. B. Its privacy risks.
C. Its design mechanism. D. Its operational problems.
10. What does Lepowsky like about his work?
A. Scientific research data. B. Real-time technical cooperation.
C. In-depth theoretical studies. D. Integrated knowledge across fields.
11. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Princeton’s “Forgetful” Robots in Global Security
B. No-Memory Robots:The Future of Nuclear Checks?
C. Nuclear Arms Control:Robots or Human Inspectors?
D. Lepowsky’s “Curious” Robots for Radiation Detection
