B As an active duty Marine and marathon runner, 27-year-old Wesley Swainston runs regularly and always has a dog by his side. However, the dogs are usually not his. Wesley lovingly calls these dogs “shelter gems” — pups that are amazing but not adopted because they have not spent enough time with people and are stressed out in the shelter. His goal is to find them forever homes by spending time with them and documenting their journey. Wesley visits nearby shelters after work every week. It all started when he noticed that many shelter dogs lack socialization and interaction with humans. As a result, when they encounter visitors, they often bark and become frantic in their cages. “They haven’t seen a lot of life,” he says. “So they’re going to be pretty fearful of people and things like cars or leaves blowing on the ground.” Wesley discovered that taking them out for runs and exposing them to the outside world can have a transformative effect. “It was a night and day difference,” he says. “It gives them a chance to get away from the shelter, which is super stressful.” Every month, dogs featured by Wesley find their forever homes as people see their personalities and journeys through his social media. One of the dogs Wesley worked closely with was a pit bull boxer mix named Bear, whose high energy and jumping habits kept him from finding a forever home. Before meeting Wesley, Bear was one of the longest residents at the shelter, having been there since he was a puppy. Wesley spent months running with Bear, taking him to places like Lowe’s and filming him enjoying the world outside. Eventually, people started recognizing Bear in public. After months of dedication, Bear’s big moment came — he was adopted by a family from Maine! “It made me feel like I’m making a difference,” says Wesley. “This has given me way more than I’ve sacrificed.” Through his actions, Wesley hopes to inspire more people to spend time with their local shelter dogs. “If you just set aside a little bit of time, you can make a huge difference in a person’s life and an animal’s life,” he says. “So that’s the goal.” 4. Why does Wesley always take dogs out for runs? A. To relieve stress of work. B. To find them forever homes. C. To promote the shelters. D. To ensure safety of the dogs. 5. What does the underlined word “frantic” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Calm and relaxed. B. Nervous but curious. C. Frightened and upset. D. Confused but delighted. 6. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. The reasons why dogs are not adopted. B. An example of Wesley’s meaningful act. C. The role social media plays in daily life. D. The process of helping dogs find shelters. 7. Which of the following best describes Wesley? A. Caring. B. Generous. C. Confident. D. Ambitious. C When children learn a musical instrument, one of the hardest things for a parent to do is encourage them to practice. But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That may not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music. Researchers from the UK looked at data from an online survey of more than 1000 people over the age of 40 who had been asked to talk about their musical experiences and exposure (暴露) to music during their lives. They were also given tasks that tested their memory and skills in things like planning and focusing. The study found that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, was connected with better memory and thinking skills. And continuing to play an instrument into later life was found to have an even more salutary effect. Singing was related to better brain health in older age too. The research team suggested that the social factors that came with singing in a singing group may also have had an effect. One of the researchers, Anne Corbett, who is a professor of dementia (痴呆) research at the University of Exeter, said that encouraging older adults to return to music later in life could be a useful public health strategy. Anne said, “There is much evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia.” And she suggested that such activities could be used to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Of those who took part in the survey,89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing. 8. Which is a benefit children may get by learning musical instruments according to the text? A. Becoming famous. B. Doing things perfectly. C. Getting courage to try new things. D. Having better brain health in later life. 9. What does the underlined word “salutary” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Positive. B. Absolute. C. Typical. D. Sufficient. 10. According to Anne, how could music benefit older adults? A. It inspired them to sing more. B. It helps them stay physically active. C. It provides a relaxing mind in their free time. D. It lowers their chance of developing dementia. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To explain the importance of a hobby. B. To tell us what we should do in daily life. C. To push people to join in music activities. D. To describe that singing is good for health. D California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor (因素). The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources (资源). But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪). Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. 12. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The increasing variety of California big trees. B. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California. C. The distribution of big trees in California forests. D. The influence of farming on big trees in California. 13. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees? A. Ecological studies of forests. B. Banning woodcutting. C. Fire control measures. D. Limiting housing development. 14. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre? A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season. C. Dampness of the air. D. A warmer climate. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests? B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon C. California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone? 根据文章第二段“His goal is to find them forever homes by spending time with them and documenting their journey. 根据文章第三段“As a result, when they encounter visitors, they often bark and become frantic in their cages. ‘They haven’t seen a lot of life,’ he says. ‘So they’re going to be pretty fearful of people and things like cars or leaves blowing on the ground.’ 根据文章第五段“One of the dogs Wesley worked closely with was a pit bull boxer mix named Bear, whose high energy and jumping habits kept him from finding a forever home. 根据文章最后一段“Through his actions, Wesley hopes to inspire more people to spend time with their local shelter dogs. ‘If you just set aside a little bit of time, you can make a huge difference in a person’s life and an animal’s life,” he says. “So that’s the goal.’ A。 C When children learn a musical instrument, one of the hardest things for a parent to do is encourage them to practice. But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That may not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music. Researchers from the UK looked at data from an online survey of more than 1,000 people over the age of 40 who had been asked to talk about their musical experiences and exposure (暴露) to music during their lives. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段中的“But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life.(但父母可以用以下方式给孩子一个尝试的理由:一项研究发现,演奏乐器可能会在以后的生活中带来更好的大脑健康。)” 根据第三段中的“The study found that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, was connected with better memory and thinking skills. And continuing to play an instrument into later life was found to have an even more salutary effect.(研究发现,演奏乐器,尤其是钢琴,与更好的记忆力和思维能力有关。 故选A项。 根据第四段中的“Anne said, “There is much evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia.” And she suggested that such activities could be used to reduce the risk of developing dementia.(Anne说:“有很多证据表明,音乐团体活动对痴呆症患者有益。” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That may not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music.(但这里有个理由,家长们可以用它来激励孩子尝试:一项研究发现,演奏乐器或许能让他们在晚年拥有更健康的大脑。 和最后一段“Of those who took part in the survey,89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing.(在参与调查的人中,89%的人说他们在生活中的某个时候玩过乐器,大约一半的人仍然在玩乐器。 D California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor (因素). D. Patrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第二段“The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.(新的研究发现,在超过46000平方英里的加州森林中,直径超过两英尺的树木数量减少了50%。 根据最后一段“Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.(McIntyre说,自20世纪30年代以来,导致该州水资源压力加剧的最大因素是气温上升,这导致树木向空气中流失更多的水分,以及雪融化的提前,这减少了旱季树木可获得的水供应)”可知,造成加州水资源短缺的最大因素是温度升高。 通读全文,结合第一段“California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor.(根据周二发表的一项研究,自20世纪30年代以来,加州已经失去了一半的大树,气候变化似乎是一个主要因素)”可知,本文主要介绍了加利福尼亚州森林地区大树数量减少的现状,随后分析了大树总量减少的原因。 Change Your Life Everybody wants to look good, especially young people. ___16___ 1. 故填is considered。 此处为固定搭配have a chance to do sth.,意为“有机会做某事”,所以用动词不定式to explore作后置定语。故填to explore。 故填what。 故填who。 可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯 参考词汇:视野 horizon Dear Sir or Madam, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Sir or Madam, I’m Li Hua, a 17-year-old high school student who is passionate about environmental protection and wildlife. The thought of talking to new people or being the center of attention made my heart race and palms sweat. As I entered middle school, this shyness turned into social anxiety, making it even harder for me to interact with my peers. One day, during a class presentation, I stumbled (结巴) over my words and everyone laughed. I felt extremely ashamed. That only made my social anxiety worse, and I started avoiding speaking in front of others. My parents noticed my struggle and suggested I talk to our family therapist (治疗专家), Dr. Smith. At first, I hesitated, but I knew I needed help. During our first period, Dr. Smith explained that social anxiety was a common issue and there were ways to overcome it. She recommended some effective treatments. Over the next few months, I attended weekly treatment with Dr. Smith. Slowly but surely, I began to feel more confident in myself. As part of the treatment, Dr. Smith encouraged me to take part in school events and clubs that interested me. It was terrifying to put myself out there, but I knew it was necessary for my growth. A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the contest, I went to visit Dr. Smith happily. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held. Dr. Smith had encouraged me to participate, so I decided to give it a try. I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines. On the day of the contest, my heart was pounding, but I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. I looked out into the audience and saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me. I smiled and began my speech. After the contest, I went to visit Dr. Smith happily. She congratulated me on my speech and said that I had made great progress. She also reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under control. She encouraged me to keep up the good work and to continue to face my fears. 词汇激活 行为类 ①参加:participate/attend/take part ②开始我的演讲:begin my speech/start my speech ③继续:continue/go on 情绪类 ①剧烈地跳动:pound/beat wildly ②高兴地:happily/gladly/joyfully 【点睛】[高分句型1]I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines.(运用了现在分词作伴随状语) [高分句型2]She congratulated me on my speech and said that I had made great progress.(运用了连词that引导宾语从句) [高分句型3]She also reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under control.(运用了连词that引导宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
