A special kitchen is in a path, next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital, in Nanchang. Around meal time, three times every day, relatives of the hospital’s patients use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall (摊) run by a husband and a wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2023, a young couple asked if they could use the stove (炉子) to cook food for their son who had bone cancer (骨癌). He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking while he was in hospital. Wan and Xiong let the young mother use their stove for free. Later on, Wan and Xiong offered their cookers for free, so other families could cook meals for relatives with illness. As words spread, people who had used their cookers began describing the breakfast stall as the “anti-cancer kitchen”. Some even called it the “kitchen of love”.
To let more people cook at the same time, Wan and Xiong have turned their breakfast stall into a large kitchen. People who have used their kitchen really wanted to share the costs. As a result, Wan and Xiong set a price: One yuan to cook a dish or to buy a box of rice, and three yuan to cook soup. Water or seasoning (调味品) is free. For people from poor families, the couple refuse to accept their money.
▲ They get up at 4 a.m. every day to prepare. They boil water and cook rice at first. To make it easier for others to use the kitchen, Wan and Xiong would like to clean the kitchen, like sweeping the ground and washing the pans and pots.
Wan and Xiong have run the kitchen for 18 years. But they have never regretted their decision. They always listen to patients’ relatives talking about their experiences. Now more and more children seem to get lost in a “sea of digital technology (数字科技)”. As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do simple (简单的) things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help Mum cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interest in communicating with (与……交流) others.
“I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about the increasing (增长的) numbers of children who can play with computers or smart phones, but have few or no skills to play with making things.” said a teacher, Colin Kinney. Many children can’t communicate with other children but their parents are proud of (以……自豪) their ability to use a computer or a smart phone.
Instead of playing with other children, more and more children are choosing to stay indoors and quietly play on a tablet on weekends and after school. How can a child grow up to be a very good artist if he doesn’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his painting skill? How can a child learn to make friends as he gets older if he doesn’t learn to communicate with others at a young age?
Digital technology can be used for good or bad. We can use a stone to break a window or build a house. We shouldn’t blame the children. We should help them make right choices. It is important for children to know how to use digital technology in today’s world, but what is more important, we should encourage (鼓励) them to develop social abilities, which will be useful to them when they grow up.
41.What’s the worst problem in the first paragraph?
A.Children can’t make things themselves.
B.Children make too many fiends online.
C.Children don’t want to communicate with others.

A.Teachers don’t notice that children have few skills to make things.
B.Many parents are very happy that their kids can use digital technology.
C.Many teachers don’t care if children can play computers or tablets.
D.Some parents are worried that their kids use digital technology too much.
43.What do many children choose to do on weekends and after school?
A.To play on a tablet indoors. B.To paint with their paintbrushes.
C.To play with other children. D.To make friends with other children.
44.What does the underlined word “blame” mean in Chinese?
A.表扬 B.原谅 C.评价 D.责怪

Zhou Xue is a mother of a 9-year-old boy in Jiangsu Province. She is worried because seven of the 46 children in her son’s class have started wearing glasses. “Worrying about eye health of students is very real these days,” she told China Daily.
However, as the right picture shows a doctor is examining (检查) the eyesight (视力) of a child from Wantang Primary School in Yunnan province in September, this school did something well—all its 536 students have quite good eyesight.
Some people may think that the school might be a unique case (个例), while some of its measures (措施) are useful.
First of all, teachers tell every student to go outside during the class breaks (休息). They do outdoor activities for more than three hours a day, according to Yang Qingyi, a teacher at the school. “Even for quiet students, we tell them to take a walk outside,” he said.
Other measures are also useful. For example, students can’t take mobile phones to school. They get at least 10.5 hours of sleep every day. The school tries to give students a healthy diet. And there are green trees all around the school, according to Sun Fubiao, the school’s principal (校长).
Chinese government (政府) pays more attention to (更加关注) students’ eye health. The double - reduction policy (双减政策) came out in July 2021. It says that primary schools should not give homework to Grade 1 and Grade 2 students so that they won’t use their eyes too much. 考查主谓一致和比较级辨析。fewer更少的;more更多的;larger更大的;smaller更小的。本句主语为“The number of the students”,意为“学生的数量”,谓语动词应用单数形式,故排除A和B项;再根据后半句所述原因“each family has fewer children than before.”可以推知,学生的数量越来越少,smaller and smaller符合句意。故选D。
4.________ of the twins is Lucy.
A.The pretty B.The prettier C.More pretty D.The most pretty
【答案】B
【详解】句意:这对双胞胎中比较漂亮的是露西。

考查形容词原级。so short as和……一样矮,常用于否定句;taller than比……高;not so tall as不和……一样高;not as short as不和……一样矮。根据“But Jimmy is better than John at jumping high.”可知,前后句子意思转折,即:Jimmy长得不如John高,但是却比John跳得高,因此用not so tall as表示“不如……高”。故选C。

They believe listening to them helps them feel relaxed. Xiong says, “It is the happiest thing to run the kitchen and help others.”
36.What does the underlined word “originally” most probably mean?

“I have talked with a number of teachers. 【答案】例文:
Dear Mike,
I’m happy to know that you want to know how to live a comfortable life in Taixing. Here is my advice.
To begin with, learning Chinese will make your life easier. You can take Chinese classes or practice with your Chinese friends. It’s also a good idea to make friends with local students. You can join some clubs or volunteer activities to meet new people. Besides, traveling is a good way to get to know the local culture and history. I suggest you visit some famous places of interest in Taixing. You could join the photography club and learn about photography. They usually meet every Saturday afternoon and take photos together.
Hope this can help you.
Yours,
Li Hua
