What will you do when one of the few bookstores in your neighborhood shuts down? If you’re Latanya DeVaughn, you will make a new and improved one! As a mom and writer, she had always dreamed of opening her own bookstore, so after watching another close its doors for good, she saw her chance.
While Latanya said every neighborhood deserved a bookstore, actually making it happen simply wasn’t possible. What she came up with instead was to transform a bus into a bookmobile! With the help of her community, she raised funds for her dream and, at the end of 2021, it came true! Bronx Bound Books rolled out in style as a bus with orange cube bookshelves. “People love the way it smells,” Latanya added. “One woman said the wood smell makes her feel like she’s at home.”
Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 30,000 new and used books, it has more room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure to prepare books with a variety of characters, so all readers can see themselves in the pages. Of course, her collection also features works of famous Black authors like James Baldwin and Alice Walker. “It’s meant to be that way,” she explained, “because I remember going to bookstores and having to look through books just to find someone I felt I could identify with.”
Setting up her bookstore in a new spot each day, Latanya is doing her part to ensure that everyone in the neighborhood will be exposed to books. That’s what Bronx Bound Books is for. “I can’t open up a bookstore on every comer, but I can probably pop up on tons of different comers,” she said.
Thanks to Latanya and her Bronx Bound Books, the town is becoming a heaven for book lovers day by day. I’m sure that the little bookstore will continue to develop quickly!

6. Why is Bronx Bound Books open?

D. To spread her bookstores to every comer across the world.
7. What does the author think of Bronx Bound Books?
A. Alarming. B. Affordable. C. Creative. D. Promising.

The rise of the robots has raised the possibility of a future where there is simply less wok for humans to do. To tired office workers, a world where we all have a bit more leisure time sounds rather nice. Yet what really matters is how work will be distributed (分配) across the workforce.
The recent past shows there is no reason to believe it will be evenly (均衡地) spread. The length of the average working week in the UK has declined steadily from about 59 hours in the mid-19th century to 32 hours in 2009. But averages hide a lot.
While trends among women have been stable, there have been big shifts among men. Males in well-paid full-time employment are now working slightly longer hours on average than two decades ago. Meanwhile, men in full-time employment at the bottom of the wage ladder are working much less.
On top of that, the number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased sharply. Twenty years ago, one in 20 men with low hourly wages worked part-time; today it is one in five. Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows this phenomenon is only happening among the low-paid. In better-paying jobs, part-time men are still fairly rare. Gender roles within families might tend to be similar too. Low-paid men may be choosing to shoulder more childcare responsibilities so their partners can return to work.
Yet it is clear that the distribution of work will matter to people. Britain has both overemployment and underemployment problems: official data show 3.4 million people in Britain want to work more hours while 3.2 million want to work few hours for less pay. The underemployed are likely to be waiters or cleaners. The overemployed are most likely to be doctors or chief executives. This indicates an economy where demand and supply of skills are out of sync.
Nobody knows for sure how the next wave of automation will shake up demand for different skills. Perhaps doctors will gain the free time they desire. Others might find themselves in greater demand. It seems likely that in the future — as now — there will be too much work for some, and too little for others.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Humans will rid all tiring work soon.
B. Future work time will be distributed evenly.
C. The averages may not indicate fewer working hours.
D. The average working hours in the UK has increased steadily.
9. What does the analysis by Institute for Fiscal Studies show?
A. Low-paid men are to blame for the low employment.
B. Part-time men have increased only among the low-paid.
C. More well-paid men are choosing to work part-time.
D. Part-time men rarely shoulder childcare responsibilities.
10. What do the underlined words “out of sync” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Insignificant. B. Unconnected. C. Undoubted. D. Imbalanced.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. More low-paid men work part-time.
B. Robots has caused smaller amount of human labor.
C. Better workforce training systems will be built worldwide.
D. Robots contribute to uneven distribution across the workforce.

You probably know the feeling of having a hearty meal at a restaurant, full and satisfied, but only take a look at the dessert menu and you decide the cheesecake looks just irresistible. Why do you somehow make an exception for a sweet treat, since you are too full to have another bite? Thanks to a recent study, scientists now have a better understanding of the origins of this urge.
Working with mice, researchers tried to set up a situation similar to the human experience described above. They started by offering a standard diet to mice who hadn’t eaten since the previous day. That “meal” period lasted for 90 minutes, and the mice ate until they couldn’t eat any more. Then it was time for a 30-minute “dessert” period. In the first round of the experiment, researchers offered mice extra regular food for dessert, and the mice ate just a little bit more. In the second round, during the “dessert” period, they offered a high-sugar feed to the mice for 30 minutes. The mice really went for the sugary feed, consuming six times more calories than in the first round.
In the mice, researchers monitored the activity of neurons (神经元) that are associated with feelings of fullness. They found that when the mice were eating the high sugar diet, the neurons released a chemical which was related to pleasure sensors in their brain and caused a feeling of reward, making the mice keep eating. When the team blocked the release of the chemical, the mice stayed away from the sugar. The researchers found the same went for humans when scanning the brains of volunteers, who were fed sugar drinks. This led the scientists to conclude that the neuron action in the human brain drives the consumption of high-sugar foods.
Researchers say the follow-up studies on this neural reward system could throw light on how sugar overconsumption may contribute to the development of obesity.
12. Why did the researchers carry out the study?
A. To test new diets for mice B. To improve dessert quality.
C. To help people eat healthily. D. To explain the urge for sweets.
13. What does Paragraph 2 tell us about the research?
A. The process. B. The result C. The basis. D. The subject.
14. What may lead to humans’ sugar overconsumption?
A. The feeling of being full. B. The blocking of certain neurons.
C. The release of a chemical. D. The presence of pleasure sensors.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. What Makes Mice Prefer Sugar B. Why There’s Always Room for Sugar
C. How We Resist the Temptation of Sugar D. Whether Consuming Sugar Causes Obesity

As I opened my birthday present, my grandpa Nick, watched gently. “Do you like it?” he asked, smiling. Inside was a little wooden fairy (仙女), sitting in the center of a flower that he’d lovingly carved and painted. On the fairy’s outstretched (张开的) hand was a tiny orange butterfly-“a special visitor from heaven", said my grandpa. “I love it,” I excitedly and happily answered.
As a cabinetmaker (木工), my grandpa loved making us gifts, and my sixth birthday was no exception. After he retired at 60, he spent his time making small wooden items, such as souvenir boxes, garden decorations and kids’ toys. They were so popular that my grandpa would even sell them at the markets. But his favourite things to make were more complex designs for my brother and me. Walking us through his working room in the back yard, he let us pick out paint colors for his sculptures. “What would I do without my little helpers?” he’d always smile.
When my grandpa sadly passed away in 2020, I was heartbroken. By then I’d grow n up, married my husband Tim, and was pregnant with my first child. “Our baby will never know how great Nick was,” I cried to Tim. But he comforted me that as long as we talked about my grandpa often, he would live on in our hearts forever. So after our daughter Mia was born later that year, I’d tell her stories about her great- grandpa Nick as often as I could.
When we moved to a new house earlier this year, I discovered a box full of all the toys he’d made for me when I was a young girl, including the little wooden fairy. Mia would love these. I smiled, thinking how happy my grandpa had been watching me play with his creations. Placing the toys on Mia’s bookshelf in her new room, I smiled at how she loved them as much as I had. In memory of my grandpa, I decided to give the toys a careful cleaning.
注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右;

4. How did Latanga DeVoughn respond to the shutdown of bookstores?
A. She took over and reopened them soon.
B. She established her own special bookstore.
C. She opened bookstores on every block.
D. She called on neighbors to open a new one.
5. What does the mention of James Baldwin and Alice Walker show in paragraph 3?
A. Latanya cares for individual readers’ needs.
B. All readers can appreciate Black authors.
C. Latanya provided books with various characters.
D. Bronx Bound Books has unlimited room.
6. Why is Bronx Bound Books open?
A. To promote the latest books in the neighborhood.
B. To raise funds to realize Latanya DeVaughn’s dream.
C. To make reading accessible to people in the neighborhood.
D. To spread her bookstores to every comer across the world.
7. What does the author think of Bronx Bound Books?

根据第一段中“What will you do when one of the few bookstores in your neighborhood shuts down? If you’re Latanya DeVaughn, you will make a new and improved one!(当你所在社区仅有的几家书店之一关门时,你会怎么做?如果你是Latanya DeVaughn,你会打造一家全新且更好的书店!)”和第二段中“What she came up with instead was to transform a bus into a bookmobile!(相反,她想出的办法是把一辆公交车改造成流动书店!)”
根据第三段中“Latanya also makes sure to prepare books with a variety of characters, so all readers can see themselves in the pages. Of course, her collection also features works of famous Black authors like James Baldwin and Alice Walker.(Latanya还确保准备有各种角色的书籍,这样所有读者都能在书中看到自己的影子。当然,她的藏书还收录了詹姆斯·鲍德温和艾丽斯·沃克等著名黑人作家的作品)”可推知,提到詹姆斯·鲍德温和艾丽斯·沃克是为了说明Latanya考虑到了不同读者的需求,关心个体读者的需求。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Setting up her bookstore in a new spot each day, Latanya is doing her part to ensure that everyone in the neighborhood will be exposed to books. That’s what Bronx Bound Books is for.(Latanya每天在一个新的地方开设她的书店,她在尽自己的一份力量确保社区里的每个人都能接触到书籍。这就是‘Bronx Bound Books’存在的意义)”可知,“Bronx Bound Books”的开设是为了让社区里的人能够更容易接触到书籍。故选C项。

C
C 9. B 10. D 11. D
根据第二段中“The length of the average working week in the UK has declined steadily from about 59 hours in the mid-19th century to 32 hours in 2009. But averages hide a lot. (在英国,平均每周工作时间从19世纪中期的59小时稳步下降到2009年的32小时。但是平均数隐藏了很多东西)”可知,平均每周工作时间未能真实反映工作时长情况。由此可知,平均值可能并不意味着工作时间减少。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“On top of that, the number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased sharply. Twenty years ago, one in 20 men with low hourly wages worked part-time; today it is one in five. Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows this phenomenon is only happening among the low-paid. (最重要的是,从事兼职工作的低收入男性数量急剧增加。20年前,每20个工资较低的男性中就有一个从事兼职工作;如今,这一比例为五分之一。英国财政研究所的分析显示,这种现象只发生在低收入人群中)”可知,该分析表明兼职男性人数增加只出现在低薪人群中。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。画线词的上文“Britain has both overemployment and underemployment problems: official data show 3.4 million people in Britain want to work more hours while 3.2 million want to work few hours for less pay. The underemployed are likely to be waiters or cleaners. The overemployed are most likely to be doctors or chief executives. A.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Yet what really matters is how work will be distributed (分配) across the workforce. (然而,真正重要的是工作将如何在劳动力中分配)”、第二段中“The recent past shows there is no reason to believe it will be evenly (均衡地) spread. (最近的历史表明,没有理由相信它会均匀分布)”和最后一段中“It seems likely that in the future — as now — there will be too much work for some, and too little for others. (很可能在未来——就像现在一样——一些人的工作太多,而另一些人的工作太少)”可知,文章开篇提到机器人兴起引发对未来人类工作及工作分配的思考,接着通过英国工作周时长变化、不同收入男性工作情况、就业过度和不足等现象,说明工作分配不均衡,最后指出未来自动化浪潮下工作分配仍将不均衡。因此,整体围绕机器人导致劳动力工作分配不均衡展开。故选D项。
D
D 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据第一段“Why do you somehow make an exception for a sweet treat, since you are too full to have another bite? Thanks to a recent study, scientists now have a better understanding of the origins of this urge.(为什么你会例外地给自己来一份甜食呢?毕竟你已经吃得太饱了,根本吃不下第二口了。多亏了最近的一项研究,科学家们现在对这种欲望的起源有了更深入的了解)”可知,研究人员开展这项研究是为了解释对甜食的渴望。故选D。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Working with mice, researchers tried to set up a situation similar to the human experience described above. They started by offering a standard diet to mice who hadn’t eaten since the previous day. That “meal” period lasted for 90 minutes, and the mice ate until they couldn’t eat any more. 【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“They found that when the mice were eating the high sugar diet, the neurons released a chemical which was related to pleasure sensors in their brain and caused a feeling of reward, making the mice keep eating. When the team blocked the release of the chemical, the mice stayed away from the sugar. The researchers found the same went for humans when scanning the brains of volunteers, who were fed sugar drinks. Keep Your Head Up: Responding to Your Deskmate’s Academic Edge
In high school, it’s common to feel a bit down when your deskmate seems to be outperforming you. ____16____. The following tips can help turn the tough situation into a strong force for personal growth.
Shift your mindset. Instead of seeing your deskmate’s achievements as a personal failure, view them as a source of inspiration. Their success is a testament to what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. Take, for example, your deskmate who gets all A’s in math tests. ____17____. See how he or she takes notes, reviews materials, and approaches difficult problems. You might find valuable strategies to apply to your own studies.
____18____. Maybe you’re not as good at math as your deskmate, but you shine in literature or art. Set small, achievable goals for yourself. If you’ve been struggling with writing essays, aim to improve your writing by one aspect each time, like organizing your thoughts more clearly or using more vivid vocabulary. Celebrate your small victories along the way, as they are the building blocks of big success.
Build a positive relationship with your deskmate. Instead of feeling envious or resentful, befriend them. A friendly deskmate can be an excellent study partner. You can share ideas, discuss difficult topics, and even have healthy study competitions. For example, you could have a weekly quiz on the content you’re currently learning in a particular subject. ____19____.
In conclusion, having a high-achieving deskmate is not a curse but a blessing. ____20____. Then you are supposed to transform this very gap into a powerful motivator. So, hold your head high, keep striving, and make the most of this incredible opportunity for growth that your deskmate presents.
A. Focus on making your own progress
B. But don’t let this feeling hold you back
C. Don’t be discouraged by his or her success
D. Recognize the differences between you and your deskmate
E. Instead of feeling discouraged, observe his or her study habits
F. However, some students choose to ignore their deskmates’ progress
G. This can make studying more fun and push you both to do better as well
B 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. D

When I accidentally knocked the wooden fairy off the shelf, I was heartbroken to see the tiny butterfly had broken off. Tears welled up in my eyes as I picked up the pieces, feeling a deep sense of loss. This fairy was a precious connection to my grandpa, and now it was damaged. I carefully gathered the broken butterfly and placed it in a small box, determined to find a way to fix it. I knew my grandpa would have wanted me to keep his creations alive for Mia.
When I intended to put Mia into bed that evening, something caught my eye. On her bedside table, was the wooden fairy, illuminated by the soft glow of her nightlight. Mia had placed it there herself. As I tucked her in, she whispered, “Mommy, can you tell me a story about Great-Grandpa Nick?” Smiling, I began telling a tale about Grandpa’s woodworking skills and the joy he brought to our family. In that moment, I realized that through stories and cherished objects, Grandpa Nick’s love and legacy would continue to live on, not just in our hearts but also in the hearts of our children.
