John Agnello, a 15-year-old boy, was out fishing with his mom near the Lakefront Marina in Grosse Pointe Woods Tuesday afternoon when he saw that a car just got flying in the air. It was about 15 yards away and dropped into the water.
Without hesitation, John said, he and a man jumped into the water to help the woman inside the car. “The car was at like 65% water, so then we had to get her out of the window because the door wasn’t opening,” he said. He and the man pulled the woman to safety, who lost consciousness (意识). John’s mom, Beth Agnello, called 911 at once. John wondered whether there was anybody else inside the car, so he jumped back into the water. Thankfully, the car was empty.
“The only part that kind of scared me was when I was under the water inside the car, feeling around in there,” John said. “It was kind of like I got trapped in the car. But everything was fine.”
Beth Agnello said she is so proud of her son who is being called a hero. “I’m hoping that he isn’t proud of being a hero and considers some work options for his future,” Beth Agnello said.
John Agnello said he doesn’t know if he’ll be a first responder in the future, but he does know he loves helping others. “I think that’s just how my family raised me just to take action to help,” John Agnello said.
St. Clair Shores police are investigating what caused the car to go into the water. Police said the woman was taken to the hospital to be examined.
4. Why did John go back under the water?
A. To find something valuable. B. To ensure nobody was in the car.
C. To show off his swimming skills. D. To check the condition of the car.
5. What made John frightened?
A. The emptiness of the car. B. Too much water in the car.
C. The absence of other rescuers. D. The difficulty of getting out of the car.
6. What does Beth Agnello hope?
A. John chooses fishing as his future job.
B. Fishing can earn her family more money.
C. John stays grounded despite the recognition.
D. The police can prevent such things happening.
7. Which of the following can best describe John?
A. Brave and helpful. B. Active and patient.
C. Selfless and honest. D. Adventurous and childish.

For humans, aging is unavoidable. As we age, our bodies naturally weaken and we develop age-related diseases. But axolotls (蝾螈), those cute smiling animals of pop culture fame, seemingly avoid this fate. These critically endangered Mexican species maintain their baby-like features even in adulthood. They can even regrow their limbs, tails, and other organs over their 21-year lifespan (寿命).
Now, a new study uncovers one more mystery about these creatures. Their bodies simply stop one of the key processes of aging - the epigenetic clock (表观遗传时钟) — when they’re just four years old. An epigenetic clock estimates an animal’s age based on how life events, such as stress or diet, switch its genes on and off. If an animal has experienced a lot of injury, for instance, its epigenetic or biological age could be much older than its chronological or real age.
The study, conducted by geneticist Steve Horvath and biologist Maximina Yun, involved examining 180 axolotls aged from four weeks to 21 years of age. Remarkably, the scientists could only create a reliable epigenetic clock for the first four years of an axolotl’s life. After that, the chemical markers simply stayed the same, as if the animals were in a state of arrested development. The team then developed a clock that can work for humans and axolotls at the same time, calculating aging in both species. This dual clock revealed that axolotls and people age in a similar way, but the amphibians can mysteriously stop the process.
The findings could be one more step in the long quest to discover effective anti-aging treatments for humans, which is a significant focus valued at $40 billion and is estimated to hit $60 billion by 2032. What’s more, decoding axolotl DNA could revolutionize regenerative (再生) medicine, paving the way for healing damaged cells, muscles, and even regrowing limbs in humans. James Godwin, an immunologist in Maine, who was not involved in the study, said, “It is a great leap forward in aging and regeneration. If the mechanisms can be understood, then many opportunities to improve human health could present themselves.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By giving definition. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By describing a process. D. By making comparison.
9. What is the main function of the epigenetic clock?
A. Tracking gene activity. B. Counting cell divisions.
C. Predicting exact lifespan. D. Finding aging-related genes.
10. What does “arrested development” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Stopped growth. B. Rapid aging. C. Abnormal change. D. Steady decline.
11. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Expert’s opinion on aging research. B. Potential benefits of the study findings
C. Current market value of anti-aging treatments. D. Achievements in regenerative medicine research
D
Some Canary Island ants have found an unexpected guest — plastic waste. Plastic entanglement (缠住) is commonly associated with ocean life. Finding plastic-wrapped ants suggested that human’s harmful plastic pollution affected a wider range of wildlife than previously thought, researchers reported in Ecological Entomology.
Scientists noticed the poor insects while studying 113 ants they’ d collected from the volcanic island of La Palma. One Lasius grandis ant was wrapped in a thin, red fiber, while a Monomorium ant in a black fiber. Chemical and physical analyses of the fibers around the ants’ bodies and legs proved they were made of plastic.
Plastic waste is known to be treacherous for seabirds and ocean life, but it can cause problems for land animals too, blocking camels’ organs and killing songbirds. Scientists have also documented some insects associated with plastics. Caddisfly larvae (石蛾幼虫) could use small plastic parts to make their protective body coverings, said Bethanie Carney Almroth, an expert at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
There was little evidence of plastic entangling ants and other small land insects, though. The La Palma ants represent one of the first known examples of plastic trash-entangled land animals.
“In the last 15 years, we have acquired enough knowledge about what happens in ocean ecosystems, but it is time to expand to other systems and species to obtain a greater outlook,” said an urban ecologist Á Ivaro Luna of the European University of Madrid.
The two ants, which Luna and colleagues collected from a forest and near the top of La Palma’ s volcano, may have picked up the plastic accidentally while looking for food. Because the ants were still alive and mobile when caught, it was unclear whether the plastic harmed them, Luna said.
The roads nearby and hiking paths could serve as the fibers’ origins, the researchers suspected. Plastic particles could be carried by the wind to remote areas like those in parts of La Palma where the team found the ants, said an ocean ecologist Melanie Bergmann.
It’s possible that insects have been entangled in plastic for a long time and it’s just gone unnoticed. “The more we research, the clearer it becomes that plastic pollution is ubiquitous (普遍存在的),” Bergmann said.
12. What happened to the two ants when they were collected from the island?
A. They were fed on the fibers.
B. They were unable to move around.
C. They were entangled in plastic fibers.
D. They were hidden in the plastic waste.
13. What does the underlined word “treacherous” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Dangerous. B. Significant.
C Common. D. Motivating.
14. What’s the focus of scientists’ research according to Á lvaro Luna?
A. How to handle plastic waste.
B. Where the plastics should go.
C. What happens in the ocean ecosystem.
D. How plastics impact on other systems and species.
15 What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To remind us of land pollution.
B. To introduce the poor condition of two ants.
C. To update us on scientific research about pollution.
D. To propose new means to protect the volcanic island.

D 9. A 10. A 11. B

根据第一段中“For humans, aging is unavoidable. As we age, our bodies naturally weaken and we develop age-related diseases. But axolotls (蝾螈), those cute smiling animals of pop culture fame, seemingly avoid this fate. (对于人类而言,衰老是无法避免的。随着年龄的增长,我们的身体会自然衰退,还会患上与年龄相关的疾病。但蝾螈,一种广为人知的可爱微笑型动物,似乎却能避开这种命运。)”可知,作者在第一段中通过对比人类和蝾螈的衰老情况来引入话题。因此,作者采用的是对比的方式引入话题。D选项“By making comparison. (作比较。)”符合题意。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“An epigenetic clock estimates an animal’s age based on how life events, such as stress or diet, switch its genes on and off. (表观遗传时钟根据生活事件(如压力或饮食)如何开启或关闭动物的基因来估算其年龄。)”可知,表观遗传时钟的主要功能是追踪基因活动。故选A。
根据文章第三段中的“Remarkably, the scientists could only create a reliable epigenetic clock for the first four years of an axolotl’s life. After that, the chemical markers simply stayed the same, as if the animals were in a state of arrested development. (令人惊讶的是,科学家们只能在蝾螈生命的前四年里创建一个可靠的表观遗传时钟。在那之后,化学标记就保持不变,就好像这些动物处于……的状态一样。)”可知,在蝾螈四岁之后,其化学标记就保持不变,说明它们的生长停止了。因此,划线词“arrested development”指的是停止生长。A选项“Stopped growth.(停止生长。)”与划线词为同义词。故选A。
根据最后一段中“The findings could be one more step in the long quest to discover effective anti-aging treatments for humans, which is a significant focus valued at $40 billion and is estimated to hit $60 billion by 2032. (这些发现可能是人类探寻有效抗衰老疗法这一漫长探索过程中的又一重要进展。抗衰老疗法的研究是一个极具价值的领域,目前投入资金达 400 亿美元,预计到 2032 年这一数字将增至 600 亿美元。)”以及“What’s more, decoding axolotl DNA could revolutionize regenerative (再生) medicine, paving the way for healing damaged cells, muscles, and even regrowing limbs in humans.

C. Common. D. Motivating.
14. What’s the focus of scientists’ research according to Á lvaro Luna?
A How to handle plastic waste.
B. Where the plastics should go.
C. What happens in the ocean ecosystem.
D. How plastics impact on other systems and species.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To remind us of land pollution.
B. To introduce the poor condition of two ants.
C. To update us on scientific research about pollution.
D. To propose new means to protect the volcanic island.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C
