Passage 1
(24-25八年级上·陕西·期中)
People are spending much money buying mystery boxes (盲盒) these days. Usually, there are toys in mystery boxes, but now shops are putting food in them. They are “leftover mystery boxes”.
They are more and more popular in China’s cities, such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu. The food inside is near its expiration date (保质期) and will be thrown away if no one buys it.
Each box costs little money but has a lot of food inside. I buy leftover mystery boxes from an app called Too Good To Go. Each box costs about 3 to 5 pounds (27 to 45 yuan), and there are usually three to four things inside. For example, a box I buy from the coffee shop has three kinds of bread and one cake. The box costs 3 pounds but the original price (原价) is around 10 pounds. Every time I buy a mystery box, I feel happier thinking about how much money I can save. Wasting less food is also good for the environment.
But the boxes also bring me problems. Because I can’t choose what’s in the box, sometimes I get the same kind of food. Also, the food may not be nutritious (有营养的) enough. I have to make other choices, such as a salad, to make the meal healthier.

B. We can get more food with less money.

D. Because the food is nutritious enough.

A. Save food.

Passage 9
(24-25八年级上·福建泉州·期中)
What genetics (基因) did your parents pass on to you? Was it their eye color or their height? It could be their characters or their musical talent. Or maybe it was their anxiety (焦虑) about math.
A US study found that genetics can decide children’s math skills and anxiety over math. It studied over 500 sets of twins and found that genetics has something to do with math anxiety. Over 10 years, the twins did math tests and filled out questions about their math anxiety. They found that fraternal twins (twins with different genetics) had different skills and anxiety over math. Identical twins (twins with the same gene set) were similar. This shows genes can influence (影响) people’s anxiety over math.
Math anxiety has a stronger influence on a child’s abilities. It could bring the same feeling as being hurt in the body.
This anxiety means that students will not want to practice math as much as they should. Then, they become even worse at math. It only adds to their anxiety about it.
But if you’re bad at math, don’t just look at your parents. Math anxiety is still rare —genetic reasons explained about 40 percent. The environment, including school and family, is also a reason. So in life, it’s important to know how to deal with math anxiety.
31. Which question did the study try to answer?
A. Can parents pass on their character to their children?
B. Can genetics decide on children’s math anxiety?
C. Why is math a difficult subject?
D. What makes twins different?
32. Why did identical twins have similar math anxiety?
A. Because they had similar math skills.
B. Because they greatly influenced each other.
C. Because they did the same number of math exercises.
D. Because they shared the same gene set.
33. According to the article we can learn that ________.
A. math anxiety can help students face problems
B. children with better abilities won’t be better at math
C. math anxiety makes students feel worse with math
D. genetics is the main reason for math anxiety
34. What does the underlined word “rare” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Common. B. Uncertain. C. Unusual. D. Interesting.
35. What might the next paragraph of the passage talk about?
A. Reasons for math anxiety. B. Ways of learning math well.
C. How to communicate with parents. D. How to deal with math anxiety.

Passage 12
(24-25八年级上·陕西西安·期中)
It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose (目的) of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted (接受) by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail (详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of humans. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays, and the most importantly, take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
42. People with little education usually ________.
A. spend a long time in school B. have a good chance to get a job
C. spend the best years to choose jobs D. have fewer chances to get a good job

A. 圆满的 B. 崭新的 C. 圆形的 D. 全面的
44. It is expected that educated people will be able to ________.
A. accept education as a way of living B. take an interest in the whole world
C. develop their abilities to make plays D. learn subjects like language and math
45. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. education can make people improve themselves
B. people can get education in a short time
C. people get education only to get better paying jobs
D. all subjects are so important to get a better education
【答案】42. D 43. D 44. B 45. A

43. 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities.”可知,教育是全面的,应该在很多方面提高一个人。它不仅要教他说话、读、写,而且要培养他的创造性思维和其他能力。因此划线词“well-rounded”意为“全面的”。故选D。
44. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays, and the most importantly, take an interest in the world.”可知,受过教育的人们能听好音乐、读好书、看戏剧和最重要的是对这个世界感兴趣。故选B。

We see them every day. They work day and night in the terrible working places and weather. They build the roads, the theaters, the cinemas and the supermarkets. They even clean up our rubbish. They are China’s migrant workers (民工).
Over 140 million workers left their homes in the countryside to look for jobs in big cities around China. They hope to be rich, but they find they have many difficulties in making enough money. And one of the difficulties is the pride and discrimination (歧视) from the people in cities.

A. Save food.

For years, American parents are trying to get children to drink fewer sugary (含糖的) drinks such as Coca Cola and Pepsi because sugary drinks make many people get fat. And being fat can bring many health problems later in life. Children are drinking fewer sugary drinks these days. They turn to sports drinks. There are many ads (广告) for sports drinks on TV and they show sports stars or movie stars having the drink.
These ads make the drinks look healthy. In fact, they are not. Sports drinks have lots of sugar, too.
Scientists at Harvard University did a survey (调查) in 2023 to find out how many sports drinks high school students had. They surveyed 22,000 students and found those students were drinking sports drinks more than they did before. Almost one third of the students drank one to three sports drinks each week. And more than one tenth had four to six drinks. Students in sports teams would have sports drinks each day and they maybe had one or more. The same was true of those students who watched TV for over two hours every day.
“Although water is the best choice for kids, sometimes having a sports drink is fine. If someone is on a long bike ride or in an all-day race, he can have one,” said Tomas Hardy, a health expert (专家). “But if kids play sports or have soccer practice for only 20 minutes, they just need water or a little fruit juice.”

(24-25八年级上·陕西西安·期中)
People depend on plants. They are useful in our life and we can’t live without them.
Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen (氧气). Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.
Plants are also part of the water cycle. Most of the water goes back into the air after a plant takes it in (吸收).
Plants give us a lot of food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas!
Plants are also important resources (资源). For example, trees provide wood to build homes and furniture. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.
All in all, plants are very important in our daily life. We can see plants everywhere. Many people are also growing plants in their own gardens at home. When people grow their own fruits and vegetables, they help cut down pollution (污染物) because big trucks don’t need to take their food to shops.

43. The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.

Passage 13
(24-25八年级上·陕西西安·阶段练习)
Who’s building the new China? It’s not the factory owners or the business men. It’s someone else.
When night falls. I see the sad faces of the migrant workers. Many are living far away from the people whom they love.
Yes, they dress differently, they speak differently, and they have different habits, but they work hard. The people in cities think they are outsiders, and most governments refuse (拒绝) to give them medical care (医疗) and public schooling for their children.
If China hopes to move into the future, many things need to change. The first is discrimination! We need to stop our discrimination against the migrant workers of China! They may not make as much money as some people in cities, but they are good people just trying to survive (生存). These workers are very important and necessary to China’s economic development (经济发展) and play an important role in changing Chinese society (社会). They are building the new China, so we should help them.
