Our youth group decided to do something nice for our city. We saw a young woman drove to the gas station and parked her car. She didn’t get out of her car. Instead, she began looking through her wallet.
Then she put her hands and head on her steering wheel (方向盘) and began to cry. The leader told us to politely knock on the window and offer a free gas card to her.
Hearing the knock, the lady tried to calm herself down and then rolled down the window. I said to her, “Here is a free twenty-five-dollar gas card for you. We just want you to know that someone loves you.”
The young woman began to cry again. After calming down for the second time, she accepted the gas card and then told us her story. She was a single mom who had been out of a job for a long time. She didn’t have enough money to live but was hopeful about a job interview that day.
In fact, she was on her way to it. Her gas ran out, and she thought she had one last ten-dollar bill in her wallet. But she couldn’t find it. “Boys, you know how badly I need this job,” She looked at us and said. “You have no idea what you have done for me. Thank you so much!”
We went back to the leader and told him what had happened. The leader thought for a moment and then he gave us four more gas cards and a rose to give to the young mom. She was in surprise when we returned with the rose and the cards. “You all have done enough for me. I can’t take anything else from you.” We insisted (坚持), and she finally accepted the gifts.

When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.
I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented and knowledgeable. With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works. That amazed us. And we also learned that its history dates back to the 6th century during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. It has been practiced in China for over 1,500 years. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting.

When volunteers Kathy and Ruth walked into our Learning Club four years ago, they thought it as a one-off (一次性事物). But as soon as they met the great group of children, they were all in. Now they are central to the club and have brought about huge changes in the children.
Some children don’t have anyone at home who can support their learning. It could be because their single parent is caring for another child with special needs, or any other reasons. So our Learning Club provides a fun out-of-school environment where students receive help with their homework from our volunteers.
“If they’re doing something, we give them a lot of praise (赞扬) and encourage them to go on to a next level if they’ re ready. We make afternoon tea for them, mainly just sandwiches and fruit. Then we go out to the library. Usually we’ll get in some reading and homework. Then we’ll do some crafts (手工),” said Kathy. “We mix it up ... We give them lots of encouragement. Then we’ll go on to harder things. So that helps them improve.”
Students in need have few chances to meet adults outside their family or teachers. That’s why our volunteers like Kathy and Ruth are so important. They create a safe space where children can open up and feel comfortable asking questions.
The best part of Kathy and Ruth’s roles is watching students become more confident in themselves. They will never forget one young student called Karen, who would not look at them, talk or even eat the candy when she first came. By the end of the year, she was taking full part in the activities and had set herself a big goal for the future. “I remember she stood up on stage (舞台) and spoke loudly. (24-25九年级上·河南省郑州市·期中)
Most of us like to know where we are and where we’re going. It can feel strange to be lost—sometimes very uncomfortable, too. But that’s not always the case.
When I was about twelve, we were on holiday in Venice. My dad’s a photographer and he said that he was going to get up the following morning at 5 o’clock to take photos. Mum wasn’t interested, but I said I’d go with him, only because he promised I could have the biggest ever bowl of Italian ice cream if I did. Why else would I rise so early?
So at 5 a. m. , we left the hotel and started walking. There was almost no one in the streets. As the sun began to come up, Dad started taking photographs and I just looked around. Every time he walked off, I followed him, down small streets and over little bridges.
After about an hour and a half, I found we lost our way and felt a bit scared, but Dad just smiled and laughed. “We’re lost!” he said. I told him to get out his map or phone. He looked at me. “Map? Phone? I only brought the camera. Come on, let’s get more lost.” He laughed again.
His laughter relaxed me and made me feel safe. We started to walk again. People were appearing on the streets—shops and cafes began to open, and as the sun came up, the narrow (狭窄的) streets started to fill with light.
Finally, after about four hours of wandering around, we were back. Mum asked worriedly, “Where have you been?” I said with a big smile, “We got lost.”

Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge, and we had no way of turning back. To cross the bridge, my brother had to pay. He was clearly upset about the mistake and the cost of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black car by the side of the road. A young man was standing nearby, trying to phone someone. I was trying to figure out which way we would go next, but my brother pulled over and asked the man if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire (没气的轮胎).
My brother helped him change the flat tire. We started getting to know that the young man was from a neighborhood nearby. He kept thanking us because he really would have no way if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again, pulled out $20, and tried to give it to us. “No, thanks,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on this bridge. We took a wrong turn, but now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to help others.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his trouble into active energy. He was able to offer help even in a bad situation. That could only come from a calm mind and an open heart. It was the bridge we were meant to cross in life.

As a child, Jay Chou was never too good at his subjects, and when he didn’t get into any college, a lot of people said that he wouldn’t be very hopeful in life. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars.
His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family.

The waiter made sure of it. After serving all the teens and doing great job, he was left a tip (小费), only $3.28. That was hardly enough to buy a cup of coffee. The waiter went home. And he felt unhappy for the students who did not know the value (价值) of hard work. He thought they looked down on people like him.
After several days, the waiter forgot about it. His life went on as usual. But ten days later, he received a letter from the teens.
“About a week and a half ago, on October 7, my three friends and I came to eat at this restaurant. It was an exciting experience for us to be here alone, and it was all new to us. So we emptied our pocket, and all our money added up to $3.28. Having no idea of how small this really was, we left. Later, we realized our mistakes and felt sorry. We knew we had to make it right. My twin brother, Jack, and I grew up going to American schools. Well, half a year ago, I was standing in my new home in Zhengzhou.
Teachers here are working so hard to teach us. Also, they try their best to help us and give us space to explore. That is the reason why we learn faster and better than most others. In just a few months, I have learned a lot of Chinese.
Last month, my parents took Jack and me to Hangzhou by high-speed rail. It was a new, exciting experience for us. Clearly, it’s the easiest, safest and fastest way to travel around. Dad told me China has the longest high-speed rail network(网)in the world now. In Hangzhou, we visited Zhejiang University. It’s really great! Later, my parents took us to both Hong Kong and Macao. On the way, we saw the world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the Hongkong-zhuhai-macao Bridge. In many cities I find people choose to use shared bikes or shared cars to travel around. People all use their mobile phones to pay! And COVID-19 vaccines are free to all! Wherever I go, I can see people’s smiling faces. I wonder why everything is so amazing in China.

Passage 3

When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars.

In Los Angeles, a waiter served a group of teens. The waiter remembered his experience as a young high school student. So he made sure the teens had a nice experience at the restaurant.
And you were the best waiter in this restaurant. You were kind, helpful, and didn’t treat us like babies! So I want to say thank you for making our ‘grown-up’ experience so amazing and fun. I would also like to say sorry on behalf of (代表) my group. Because we were new to all of this, our 13-year-old minds didn’t exactly know how to deal with the bill (账单). The bill was reasonable (合乎情理), but we had completely forgotten (and didn’t know, to be honest) what a tip even was and how much to give. So we emptied our pocket, and all our money added up to $3.28. Having no idea of how small this really was, we left. Later, we realized our mistakes and felt sorry. We knew we had to make it right. There was a river nearby. On its bank stood the hut (小屋) of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. Passage 4
(22-23九年级上·河南省信阳市光山县·期中)
The answer quickly comes to my mind: hard work pays off.
