Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem — a
plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the
couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to
get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.
Today, the couple credit this man, the celebrated bird photographer Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives,
and helping them persuade others of the vital importance of conservation in this region.
Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador
contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in
the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in
all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird
reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who
have devoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis
Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists
— work that he says is a better livelihood than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation,” says Luis Jr.,
Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for
future generations.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go to
plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however,
thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades,
and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says.
24. What advice did the photographer give to the couple?
A. Photographing the birds. B. Taking care of their property.
C. Protecting their precious crops. D. Coexisting with the birds.
25. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A. How Ecuador is geographically unique. B. What distinguishes Ecuador’s biodiversity.
C. What makes Ecuador a birding destination. D. How birding tourism is operated in Ecuador.
26. What have the Ajila family achieved?
A. Helping other farmers shake off poverty.
B. Combining profitability with sustainability.
C. Applying new technology in modern farming.
D. Changing the landscapes of their residential areas.
27. What can we learn from Ángel Paz’s story?
A. Well begun is half done. B. It takes time to bear fruit.
C. The early bird catches the worm. D. The secret to success is adaptability.

In February, the CEO of Wendy’s, a popular American fast-food chain, said that they would start
experimenting with dynamic pricing. For example, the bacon might cost $7.99 at 7 a.m. when everyone eats
breakfast, and $6.99 three hours later when it’s not breakfast time, but also not lunch time either.
“Load balancing” is a similar concept in energy and transportation. Utilities (公用事业) charge less for power
overnight, and transit (运输 ) agencies charge higher fares during rush hour to encourage users to shift toward
off-peak times, when energy and trains are in less demand. And there is “peak-period pricing” on ride-hailing (打
车) platforms, which is meant to quickly stimulate more drivers to start picking up passengers.
In an era before the Internet, changing prices was costly, requiring updating signs or applying markdown
stickers by hand. As restaurants, retailers, parking garages, gyms, hair salons became more automated, price
changes became effortless even at physical stores. It’s easy to understand why companies want to change prices
more frequently: to make more money. But does that mean that as dynamic pricing spreads, prices will be higher
on average. Senator Sherrod Brown,Democrat of Ohio, posed the question to the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome H.
Powell, calling the technique “just another way for corporations to make it harder for consumers to seek out lower
prices”.
Mr. Powell responded that dynamic pricing lowers prices as well as raises them, and the overall impact on
price levels isn’t yet known. When one company dominates the market, dynamic pricing is more likely to raise
prices overall. But in a competitive environment, dynamic pricing can also lead to price wars that benefit
consumers.
28. Which of the following situations belongs to “dynamic pricing”?
A. Lower ticket prices on weekdays. B. Lower room prices for advance booking.
C. Higher food prices for non-members. D. Higher products prices for large amounts.
29. Why is “load balancing” employed according to paragraph 2?
A. To manage resources. B. To maximize profits.
C. To stimulate economy. D. To benefit customers.
30. What is the attitude of Senator Sherrod Brown to dynamic pricing?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. History of Food price Policies. B. Innovations on Fast Food Menus.
C. Great Influence of Dynamic Pricing. D. Dynamic Pricing in Modern Economy.

A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers (网红) than astronauts. It made headlines
and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days”. Is influencing a promising career path? The lifestyles we
see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality,
disability and mental health issues.
Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social
media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful influencers and everyone else. For most
people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for
brands.
Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of protection that
comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by an
absence of industry standards and little pay transparency. Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and
determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many
end up working for free.
Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms(算法) — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that
determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet
they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media. The threat of invisibility is a
constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If
they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm — having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search
results.
Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health
concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which
can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online criticism, it contributes to mental and physical
health issues.
Although becoming an influencer may look appealing to more and more people, the industry’s dark underside
needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.
32. Which of the following words cans replace “enticing” in Paragraph 1?
A. Imaginative. B. Similar. C. Attractive. D. Traditional.
33. What’s one of the reasons for influencers’ undervaluing their creative work?
A. Standardized protection. B. Invisibility of payment.
C. Assessment of their own work. D. Passion for content creation.
34. What may cause the influencers’ stress according to Paragraph 4?
A. Having to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
B. Finding it difficult to create new content constantly.
C. Having little knowledge of platform algorithms.
D. Being unequally punished by platforms.
35. Why does the author write this text?
A. To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.
B. To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
C. To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
D. To describe the life of self-employed content creators.

Moving from urban New Jersey to the Pennsylvania woods was a dream coming true for me. My home was
surrounded by nature, with the nearest neighbor miles away and no phone service. As a nurse, I used to be around
people, but I found immense joy in solitude and wildlife, since my whole new life was closely connected to nature
and I could never feel lonely with animals nearby.
One afternoon, I introduced a visiting friend to a deer I called Scarbelly, recognizable by an old wound
running from her shoulder to her hip. “She had a baby last year, and she brings her baby around too,” I said happily.
“They seem to like you a lot!” she remarked as the deer inched closer. “I think so, but deer aren’t easy to get close
to,” I replied, enjoying the peacefulness of my life in the woods.
That peaceful existence was disturbed one April morning. I woke to the sounds of birds but felt an unusual
heaviness in my legs. Struggling to get up, I lost my balance and crashed into the doorframe. Something was
seriously wrong: I even couldn’t feel my left arm or fingers. Panic set in as my nurse training kicked in---could I
be having a stroke (中风) at just 46? I needed help, but I had no neighbors and no phone.
Desperate, I muttered, “Well, God, I’ve got to do something here. I need help. Fast!” I tried to get dressed
quickly and stepped outside, “Scarbelly!” I cried with all my strength. Scarbelly soon appeared on the deck, with
several other deer crowding in behind her. They weren’t the rescue team I’d imagined, but they were all I had.
Determined to reach the road at the top of the hill, I shuffled forward, the deer following closely. The vast
lawn looming before me, I felt overwhelmed. Yet I pushed through, only to find myself at the gravel road,
confused about how I’d made it that far. Scarbelly looked into my eyes, as if she had helped me along.
