I was happy to obey, and quickly invented stories full of imaginary creatures in complex plots (复杂情节) intended to convey some important lessons about patience or hard work or being kind to others. But my daughter was not pleased. She had very particular ideas about what her bedtime stories should be about. She wanted stories about a little girl planning a birthday party. A human girl. A human girl about her age. And what fascinated her were the ordinary details: the theme for the party, the place, who was invited, and (most importantly) what they had for dessert. It turns out my daughter is not alone. In a study, 4-year-old children were read a story about sharing that featured either human characters or animals. Both before and after the story, children had the chance to share stickers with other children. On average, children who heard the story featuring a human who shared increased the number of stickers they shared, while those who heard the story featuring an animal that shared did not. The findings from the study support the idea that young children have an easier time exploring what they learn from a fictional storybook to the real world when the storybook is realistic. The leap from an unreal human to a real one is simply smaller than the leap from a raccoon (浣熊) to a human. But it could be that as children grower, they become better at making these leaps, that parents can help them make the leaps more readily. I found that encouraging 5-and 6-year-old children to explain key events in a storybook made them better at removing the moral of the story and then applying it to a real-world problem. If the theory in our paper is right, this should help children relate the unrealistic aspects of the story to what they know about the real world, and thus appreciate the patterns that hold across both the fictional world of the story and the real world around them. 1.By telling her daughter’s story, the writer suggests children ________. A.prefer the factual to the fantastical B.take their birthday party seriously C.demand more from their parents D.prepare for their birthday party well 2.The underlined words “the leaps” in Paragraph 5 mean ________. A.the ability of exploring a fictional storybook B.the adaptation to the realistic world C.the procession from the story to the reality D.the identification of fictional human 3.How did the writer help the children learn the story moral? A.By encouraging children to act as the characters in stories. B.By encouraging children to imagine the fictional world. C.By encouraging children to appreciate the real world. D.By encouraging children to explain important events. 4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Realism Has Advantages in Children’s Storybooks B. Children Prefer Realistic Stories to Moral Lessons C.Storybooks About Animals Teach Children More D.Storybooks Make Children Easily Adapt to Society 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故选A。 2. 根据“young children have an easier time exploring what they learn from a fictional storybook to the real world when the storybook is realistic. The leap from an unreal human to a real one is simply smaller than the leap from a raccoon to a human.” 根据最后一段“I found that encouraging 5-and 6-year-old children to explain key events in a storybook made them better at removing the moral of the story and then applying it to a real-world problem.” A。 Read and Explore The actor Christopher Reeve is best known as the star of four Superman movies. However, something terrible happened to him on May 27, 1995. His head landed first and badly hurt when he was thrown from his horse in an accident. Reeve’s life was saved by doctors, but the fighting against his hard life was just beginning, as the actor would never be able to feel anything below his neck, breathe without help from a machine or do any physical activity on his own again. During this time, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending his own life. It was only because of the support of his wife, family and friends that he found the hope and courage to live again. Reeve put his heart into learning everything he could about his injuries. He took lots of exercises. Reeve never met his goal of getting back on his feet, but he made great progress. Shortly after, he managed to return to his film work by directing, producing and even starring in films. He also wrote a book about his experience and returned to his charity work. Reeve became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. “What I do is based on powers we all have inside us and you don’t have to be a ‘superman’ to do it.” His attitude encouraged many people who were stuck in illness. “With the progress of new medical research, I’m confident that people like me would be able to walk again one day. So you can see. I’m too busy with living to think of giving up!” His ten-year-long fighting came to an end on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52. His active performance for the disabled proved more superhuman than anything that could be dreamed up for the big screen. Tasks 1.When was Christopher Reeve thrown from his horse? _______________________________________________________ 2.Who helped him find the hope to live again? _______________________________________________________ 3.Did he get back on his feet finally? _______________________________________________________ 4.What charity work did he do? _______________________________________________________ 5. What do you think of Christopher? Why do you think so? _______________________________________________________ 【答案】1.On May 27, 1995. 2.His wife, family and friends. 3.No, he didn’t. 4.He became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. 5.I think he is brave, because he didn’t give up after the accident and he tried his best to learn everything he could. 1.根据第一段“something terrible happened to him on May 27, 1995...he was thrown from his horse in an accident.” 故填On May 27, 1995. 2.根据第三段“It was only because of the support of his wife, family and friends that he found the hope and courage to live again.” His wife, family and friends. 3.根据第四段“Reeve never met his goal of getting back on his feet”可知,他最终也没能站起来,因此答案是否定的。故填No, he didn’t. 4.根据第四段“Reeve became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research.” He became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. 5. I think he is brave, because he didn’t give up after the accident and he tried his best to learn everything he could. 1. _________ /kwoʊˈteɪʃən/ n. ________ /niːd/ n. 需求 v. ________ /kən'tɪnjuɪŋ/ adj. _______ /ɪnˈspaɪərɪŋ/ adj. The ______ at the beginning of the article is from Shakespeare. 2. Mr. Zhang is a ______ historian. 3. Whether we can have a picnic ______ ______ the weather tomorrow. 4. It is very important to ______ good reading habits from childhood. 5. Being fluent in two languages gave her an ______ in her job search. 6. There is an urgent ______ for food and clean drinking water in the disaster area. 7. His success story ______ many young people to pursue their dreams. 8. Dinosaurs lived on Earth for a long ______ of time. 1.Next Friday is Tom’s birthday.
