Summer is coming! Are you planning a camping trip with your friends or family? How can you keep safe when camping outside? There’s something very important you should learn—read the land!
Contour lines (等高线) are lines on a map that show the height of the land. They connect (连接) places that are the same height. These lines help us understand the shape of hills and mountains.
First, you can find ridges (山脊) and valleys (山谷) using contour lines. A ridge looks like a “V” or “U” shape pointing downhill, from big numbers to small ones. A valley is shown in a similar shape that points uphill, from small numbers to big ones.
When contour lines are close together, the land is very steep (陡峭). If the lines are far apart, the land is more flat (平坦). If you see circles (圆圈) made by contour lines, the smallest circle often shows the top of a mountain.
Contour lines are very useful for hiking and planning. Hikers use them to see how hard a road will be. They often choose flat places near a river to camp. Engineers and builders also use them when planning roads, buildings, and bridges.
So this summer, before you head out on your adventure, take a few minutes to study your map. Travel smart, camp safely, and have fun!

①“This is what I waited for,” he thought. “So now let me take it.”
②He could not see the fish’s jumps, but only heard the breaking of the ocean and the heavy noise as it fell. The thin fishing line was cutting his hands badly, but he had always known this would happen. He tried to keep the cutting across the calloused (长茧的) parts and not let the line cut the fingers or the palm (掌心).
③“I wish the boy were here... If the boy were here, he would definitely help me,” he thought. “Yes. If the boy were here. If the boy were here...”
④But now the old man was alone in his small boat, far out at sea. The sun rose slowly, and the water was quiet and deep blue. He held the fishing line carefully, feeling the strong pull from the great fish under the water.
⑤“You’d better be brave, old man,” he said. “Pain does not matter to a man.”
⑥The fish was beautiful and full of life. It pulled the boat farther and farther. He was tired. His hands were cut, and his back hurt, but his eyes stayed bright.
⑦He looked at the sea. It was wide and full of possibilities. Sometimes it was quiet, and sometimes hard to understand. He had been on the sea for many years. He loved it, even when it wasn’t kind to him.
⑧Once again, the fish came to the surface. It was the biggest fish he had ever seen—beautiful, shining, and strong.
⑨“You are such a treasure,” he said in a low voice. “God, please help me.”

任务型阅读。
During the Reading Week at school, Sally learned the story of Sisyphus (西西弗斯) from Greek myth (希腊神话). This story made her think about her own life. So, she posted (发帖) her questions online to ask for help.
Sally 10:30 p.m. 19 May
I just read the Greek myth of Sisyphus. The gods punished (惩罚) him by making him push a very big rock up a high mountain, but it always fell down before almost reaching the top. So he had to restart, repeating (重复) this work day after day, year after year.
This story reminds me of my life. Like Sisyps, I also push my own heavy “rocks” repeatedly—endless schoolwork and exams, and repetitive (重复的) daily social problems. I pass one exam out another one is coming. The English words I memorized yesterday? Already forgotten. I try and fail and try again...
Will this climb end? If not, why keep pushing so hard?
Jill 10:50 p.m. 19 May
Sally, I get you! Every day I wake up, go to school, sleep... then do it again. New goals always come after the old ones. So what’s the point?
Last month, a worker who repairs cultural relics (文物) in the museum answered my question. She showed me a broken wooden chair. She said, “I have been working on it for several days, but even after I fix it, time will damage (损坏) it someday. I need to fix it again.” I asked her, “Isn’t it meaningless?” She smiled, “The relics may break again, but my skills and patience will grow.”
Now I understand. Even though the rock falls or relics breaks, what we learn stays with us. The meaning isn’t just about reaching the top. It’s also in the strength (力量) you build while pushing. Do you think so?

Amy is a middle school student who never refuses her friends although it makes her feel very tired. Yesterday, when her math teacher pointed out a small mistake in her homework, her face turned red and she cried. She thought to herself all day, “See, I’m so bad and nobody loves me!”
As teenagers, some of you may have the same experience as Amy. You may always try to make others happy and get very upset when others criticize (批评) you. Studies have shown that these two habits come from a feeling called shame. Shame makes you believe you’re not good enough, and keeps you thinking, “If I’m not perfect, people won’t love me.” This feeling stops you from showing how you really feel and makes you see every small mistake as proof (证据) of your unworthiness (无价值).
The good news is you can fight against shame. First, ask yourself, “Why do I feel this way?” or “Would I say the same thing to a friend if they were in my place?” Second, say to yourself, “Everyone makes mistakes, and that’s okay.” or “I am worthy (值得的) of love just as I am.” Third, take small brave actions like saying “no” when someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do, or writing down three things you’re good at when you feel criticized. In a word, building self-worth is the most important thing. Remember—whether you are perfect or not, you are worthy of love.
Amy never refuses her friends, and she has a strong fear of criticism. That’s because ___60___. Shame makes you believe you’re not good enough and unlovable. It leads you to ___61___ and see every small mistake as proof of your unworthiness. However, there are some helpful ways to fight against shame. First, question negative thoughts. Second, ___62___. Third, take small brave actions. All in all, we should ___63___.

21. In this picture, which one shows a valley?
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④

【答案】60. she is experiencing shame/she is full of shame/she is ashamed/she has a feeling of shame/she has a sense of shame
61. hide your (true) feelings
62. be kind to/encourage/accept/love yourself
63. build self-worth
根据“Studies have shown that these two habits come from a feeling called shame.”可知,研究表明,这两种习惯源于一种叫做羞耻的情感。因此艾米的习惯源于羞耻感。故填she is experiencing shame/she is full of shame/she is ashamed/she has a feeling of shame/she has a sense of shame。
【61题详解】
根据“This feeling stops you from showing how you really feel and makes you see every small mistake as proof of your unworthiness.”可知,这种感觉会阻止你表达自己的真实感受,并让你把每一个小错误都视为自己毫无价值的证据。因此羞耻感会让人隐藏真实感受。故填hide your (true) feelings。
【62题详解】
根据“Second, say to yourself, ‘Everyone makes mistakes, and that’s okay.’ or ‘I am worthy of love just as I am.’”可知,对抗羞耻感的第二步是自我安慰、自我鼓励或善待自己。故填be kind to/encourage/accept/love yourself。
【63题详解】

【答案】例文
Beauty in a Rainy Afternoon
Beauty can be found everywhere, from the wonders of nature to the small things in daily life. For me, the most touching beauty lies in a rainy afternoon when I truly understood my grandmother’s love.
It was a rainy afternoon. I was sitting by the window, feeling bored. Then my grandmother came in with a bright smile, holding a light blue sweater. “I made this for you. Try it on,” she said gently. The sweater was soft and warm. As I put it on, I noticed the fine stitches. It must have taken her a lot of time.
At that moment, I realized beauty wasn’t just about looks. It was about the love and care behind the sweater. This rainy afternoon made me understand that the best things in life are often simple and full of love. Since then, I’ve learned to notice and appreciate the small, beautiful moments in daily life, especially the love from my family.
