Hi everybody! I'm delighted to see so many of you here today for my introductory talk about the university music society. The society was originally set up fifty years ago by a group of tutors in the music department. They ran it themselves for the first ten years, and then handed over the organization of the society to students, and it has stayed that way ever since.
We invite experts to give talks on various different subjects throughout the year we've had speakers telling us about pianos through the ages, and how to make drums. The first one of this term is this evening, and it's all about violins. And next Wednesday, you'll have a chance to hear our jazz group playing in a concert. Do you remember where the Kings Hall is, where you had your first-year welcome talk yesterday? Well, the concert will be in the slightly smaller Union Hall, just opposite.
We have a competition every year for young composers. It took us a bit of time to choose a theme this year in the past we've covered topics from nature to dance-the committee finally agreed it would be poetry, so we'll see how that goes!
A
In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to the ages between 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.
Subjects
In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested. The National Curriculum does not apply to Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach.
Examinations
At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in any of a range of subjects, and may involve a final examination, an assessment of work done during the two-year course, or both of these things. At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. It is necessary to have A levels in order to go to university.
In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different from that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three, and students study a large number of subjects as part of their degree.
21.In which parts of the world are the subjects taught only decided by the nation?
A.England and Wales. B.England and Scotland.
C.US and Britain. D.Wales and Scotland.
22.Which of the following has nothing to do with students in Scotland?
A.GCSE. B.SCE.
C.Highers. D.The Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
23.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.In the US, only local government can decide the subjects.
B.In Scotland, students can take either the SCE examinations or the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
C.In England and Wales, one cannot go to university without A levels.
D.As for a 16-year-old student in England and Wales, he has to take both GCSE examinations and a final examination.

根据第四段的句子“In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.(在苏格兰,学生参加SCE考试。一年后,他们可以参加Highers考试,之后他们可以直接上大学,也可以在学校再学习一年,并获the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies)”可知,GCSE苏格兰的学生无关。故选A项。
根据第三段第一句“At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations.(16岁时,英格兰和威尔士的学生参加普通中等教育证书考试。)”和最后一句“At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. It is necessary to have A levels in order to go to university.(有些学生在18岁时参加A-level考试,通常不超过三门科目。为了上大学,必须有A级考试。)”可知,在英格兰和威尔士,没有A级考试就不能上大学。故选C项。

Life can be overwhelming (令人不知所措的), and you’re not alone if you’re struggling. 65% of adults in the United States reported feeling stressed due to current circumstances. This means two-thirds of adults are uncertain about their lives and futures.
You may wonder why everything feels so hard. Perhaps you’re comparing yourself to others who don’t seem to be experiencing the same level of stress. However, everyone’s journey is different. Your peers may be facing challenges privately or might be in a different stage of life. It’s best to focus on your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others.
Personal challenges also impact how hard life feels. Family issues such as problematic relationships can lead to feelings of loneliness, shame, and jealousy (嫉妒) when you see others with strong familial support. Interpersonal issues such as navigating a break-up or losing a loved one can also make life feel harder. Feeling socially isolated can contribute to a sense of loneliness, which can badly affect health, leading to poor sleep and other issues.
Psychological and physical pain further complicates life’s challenges. It’s essential to acknowledge how society factors contribute to these feelings. We’re facing economic disorder, which can be traumatic and make life feel more difficult, Licensed therapist (心理治疗师) Alegria Louise Demeestere emphasizes the importance of looking at systemic causes rather than blaming individuals.
Understanding why life feels hard is the first step. When feeling this way, it’s common to feel angry or upset. “Your feeling is trying to tell you something,” says Demeestere. Being curious about your feeling can prevent you from taking it out on others or numbing it through addictions. Facing the feeling directly can use its energy to push you forward past difficulties.
24.Why should we focus on our own progress?
A.It is the key to success. B.It helps to reduce anxiety completely.
C.Everyone’s journey is different. D.Everyone’s demand is uneven.
25.What can cause feelings of loneliness, shame and jealousy?
A.Family matters. B.Interpersonal issues.
C.Psychological pain. D.Economic disorder.
26.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “traumatic” in paragraph 4?
A.Painful. B.Unexpected. C.Cheerful. D.Memorable.
27.What is mainly emphasized in the last paragraph?
A.Living a creative life. B.Looking at systemic causes.
C.Seeking out extra support. D.Understanding why life feels hard.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.A 27.D
根据文章第二段“However, everyone’s journey is different. Your peers may be facing challenges privately or might be in a different stage of life. It’s best to focus on your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others.(然而,每个人的旅程都是不同的。你的同龄人可能私下面临挑战,或者可能处于不同的人生阶段。最好关注自己的进步,而不是拿自己和别人比较)”可知,我们应该专注于自己的进步,因为每个人的旅程都是不同的。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Family issues such as problematic relationships can lead to feelings of loneliness, shame, and jealousy (嫉妒) when you see others with strong familial support.(家庭问题,比如有问题的人际关系,当你看到其他人有强大的家庭支持时,会导致孤独、羞耻和嫉妒的感觉)”可知,家庭问题会导致孤独、羞耻和嫉妒的感受。故选A。
故选A。
C
Chelsea Sodaro is a 34-year-old new mom who recently won the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in the professional women’s field. Just 18 months after giving birth to her daughter, Skylar, the professional triathlete won the intense competition.
The IRONMAN World Championship required contestants to complete a difficult race—a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. A resident in Reno, Nevada told Fox News Digital, “The IRONMAN World Championship is the most important part of our sport. All the best athletes show up ready to throw down”.
Sodaro, shockingly, had only ever completed one IRONMAN prior to the World Championship—in June 2022. With just one other full IRONMAN finished, Chelsea Sodaro had to train hard for the championship. The preparation for a race like this can range depending on the competitor, but for Sodaro, preparation was the key to her massive success. The triathlete trains roughly 25—30 hours a week across all areas of the race: swimming, biking and running. Training athletes like her also tend to lift weights and gain muscle to help them succeed in the race.
However, this particular competition proved to be a challenge beyond the physical training aspect.
Sodaro said the Big Island of Hawaii had unique climate conditions that required additional training on her part. But during the days leading up to the race day, Sodaro said she was very nervous. But she said that right before the race began, she felt a sense of peace. “I poured so much into my work, and my family made a lot of sacrifices to get me to the start line in one piece. I knew that I was ready to have a great day,” she said.
So how did Sodaro make it to the finish line first? She said she stayed focused and didn’t panic when things went wrong.
Sodaro crossed the finish line at 8:33:46. That made her the first rookie (新选手) to win the IRONMAN World Champion in 15 years and the first American in over 25 years.
28.What does the underlined phrase “throw down” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Beat others. B.Take up challenges.
C.Create history. D.Get pleasure.
29.Why did Chelsea Sodaro win a big success in the race?
A.She is good at various sports. B.Her preparation had gone well.
C.She is an experienced competitor. D.The local residents gave her support.
30.How did Chelsea Sodaro respond to stress before the race?
A.By encouraging herself. B.By giving herself a short break.
C.By talking with her family. D.By adding more physical training.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Best IRONMAN Races in Kailua-Kona
B.Female Athlete Returns After Having a Baby
C.Chelsea Sodaro Crossed the Finish Line
D.New Mom Wins IRONMAN Championship
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.A 31.D
根据画线部分上文中的“The IRONMAN World Championship required contestants to complete a difficult race — a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.(铁人世界锦标赛要求参赛者完成一项艰难的比赛——游泳2.4英里,骑自行车112英里,跑步26.2英里)”以及“The IRONMAN World Championship is the most important part of our sport.(世界铁人锦标赛是我们运动中最重要的一部分)”可知,这项比赛很难,而且这项比赛是很重要的。由此推知“All the best athletes show up…(所有最好的运动员都会参加……)”
根据第三段中的“The preparation for a race like this can range depending on the competitor, but for Sodaro, preparation was the key to her massive success.(为这样的比赛所做的准备可能因参赛者而异,但对于Sodaro来说,准备是她取得巨大成功的关键)”可知,准备做得好是Sodaro取得巨大成功的关键。故选B项。
根据第五段中的“But during the days leading up to the race day, Sodaro said she was very nervous. But she said that right before the race began, she felt a sense of peace. “I poured so much into my work, and my family made a lot of sacrifices to get me to the start line in one piece. I knew that I was ready to have a great day,” she said.(但是在比赛前的几天里,Sodaro说她非常紧张。 故选A项。
通过阅读文章可知,文章首段内容“Chelsea Sodaro is a 34-year-old new mom who recently won the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in the professional women’s field.(Chelsea Sodaro是一位34岁的新手妈妈,她最近在夏威夷凯鲁瓦科纳举行的VinFast IRONMAN世界锦标赛中赢得了职业女子领域的冠军)”点明了文章的核心要义,即本文主要讲述了34岁的新手妈妈ChelseaSodaro在夏威夷的VinFast铁人世界锦标赛上夺冠的故事。

You wrote that you are very worried about your friend, Chen Lei. I understand quite well that you are 56 (terrible) anxious. You think that 57 (you) friend plays computer games too often and spends too much time online.
I recommend that you talk to your friend about his 58 (behave). It is not unusual 59 teenagers of your generation 60 (attract) to computer games and the online world. But 61 (spend) too much time online is unhealthy and 62 (make) it very difficult to focus on other things in life. Some students 63 (addict) to the Internet cannot concentrate on school and family life. I think you should encourage your friend to try some new 64 (hobby). Why not discuss the problem together? I am sure he will listen to you 65 you are his good friend.
56.terribly 57.your 58.behavior 59.that 60.are attracted 61.spending 62.makes 63.addicted 64.hobbies 65.because
故填your。
It is not unusual that…结构。故填that。
故填are attracted。
故填because。

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
注意:(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
One possible version:
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She pictured the scene where her mom tried her best to overcome her fears and gathered all her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. And Momma, aware of Neisha’s inner confusion and anxiety, reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a sweet smile, saying she would be with her all the time. Greatly touched and determined to find her courage, Neisha stood in front of the mirror, constantly practicing from pronunciation to tone and even each gesture. “Try harder, and I can make it!” she kept cheering herself up.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Still shy and nervous, she customarily lowered her head to avoid making eye contact with others, numb there for seconds. But shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders and then got started, “Dear fellow students, ...” While presenting herself, Niesha glanced at Mr. Roberts smiling at her and listening attentively. A spark of joy flashing across her eyes, she knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.
①想象:imagine/picture ②克服:overcome/get over
③系:tie/attach
①恐惧:fear/terror ②担忧:anxiety/concern
③受鼓舞的:inspired/motivated

注意:(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

D.New Mom Wins IRONMAN Championship

注意:(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Do you remember where the king's hall is? Where you had your first year welcome talk yesterday? Well, the concert will be in the slightly smaller union hall, just opposite. We have a competition every year for Young composers. IT took us a bit of time to choose a theme this year. In the past, we've covered topics from nature to dance.
