第一节
Dear students,
It is my great honor to stand here on behalf of our school’s music club to summarize our two-day music festival, which has been a truly memorable experience.
We started by delving into the rich history of Guangdong’s traditional music, which provided us with a deep appreciation for the roots of our local sound. Following that, we had the unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the art of Cantonese Opera, experiencing firsthand the beauty and complexity of this cultural gem. The highlight of our festival was the grand performance in our school auditorium, where we combined both Chinese and Western instruments to play renowned pieces from around the world.
As we come to the end of this festival, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the participants and organizers. I look forward to more such events that bring us closer and foster a love for music and cultural exchange.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.

At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up.
Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable.
In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily distinguishable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to differentiate. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.
The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the underlying culture that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a shift would not only reduce the pressures associated with the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a profound impact on personal development and the future of education.
24.What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe?
A.Prioritizing effort over well-being.
B.Relieving stress through social activities.
C.Displaying graceful images to attract others.
D.Hiding hard work to appear naturally gifted.
25.How does the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge the misconception?
A.By showing effort fuels the brain activity.
B.By proving focus enhances brain function.
C.By linking color recognition to intelligence.
D.By associating careful observation with talent.
26.What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A.It values the learning process over outcomes.
B.It causes stress and false ideas about success.
C.It prevents students from recognizing their talents.
D.It makes students prioritize socializing over studying.
27.Which of the following might the author agree with?
A.Fortune favors those with a clear vision.
B.Sweat is the ink that writes a masterpiece.
C.Work in silence and let success make the noise.
D.Keep moving forward even when no one sees it.
C
Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.
28.In the author’s view, the biggest difference between high school and middle school is ________.
A.different relationships B.the higher pressure
C.high academic achievement D.the higher expectations
29.Which of the following suggestion is not mentioned in the text?
A.Careful schedules. B.Healthy relationships.
C.Reinventing yourself. D.Using network information.
30.Who is the article written for?
A.Students in junior school. B.Teachers in high school.
C.Parents of high school students. D.Students in senior high school.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Get Through the Transition of Freshman Year of High School
B.How to Become an Active Learner in High School
C.What to Prepare to Keep up with Everything in High School
D.How to Meet Your Teacher’s High Expectations
D
My high school experience was an exercise in frustration for everyone involved. I was in a lot of high-level classes because my test scores were superb, especially in languages. I never got less than an A on any language test-English, Spanish or French. Even a score under 95% was very rare.
However, most of my language teachers found this irritating rather than encouraging because I didn’t pay attention in class. I drew during lectures and my homework grades were far from satisfaction due to me almost never handing anything in. As an adult, I think many of them believed I had to be cheating, especially the one who refused to give me a bonus point on a test that would have raised my average score to an A for the quarter because I was not an A student on account of my study habits in her eyes.
My mom tended to force me to complete my piles of missing assignments during the last week of each quarter, so that I didn’t completely destroy my otherwise good grades. I had exactly one Spanish teacher who I was able to convince that I really was learning in class, regardless of what my pencil was doing at the moment. And it was completely by accident.
One day, she asked a general question in class. I was the only one to raise the hand to answer. I did so, and she replied in a somewhat stunned tone that I was correct. Why so surprised? Because at no point in this process did I look up from the drawing I was working on with my other hand. I didn’t think she figured out that the drawing was actually helping me pay attention, but she at least realized it wasn’t damaging anything and stopped blaming me when she caught me drawing instead of taking notes.
32.What was the author like while in high school?
A.He was appreciated by most teachers.
B.He was misunderstood for his learning style.
C.He usually relied on cheating in exams.
D.He did well in exams as well as homework.
33.Why did the teacher refuse to give the author a bonus point?
A.She looked down upon the author.
B.The author didn’t hand in his homework.
C.She thought the author didn’t deserve it.
D.The author always drew in class.
34.How did the author’s mother treat him?
A.She convinced the teacher of his genuine learning.
B.She reminded him to be concentrated in class.
C.She was indifferent to his behaviour.
D.She pushed him to finish the missing homework.
35.Which words best describe the Spanish teacher?
A.Tolerant and responsible. B.Strict and humorous.
C.Capable and friendly. D.Committed and cheerful.

In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 36 But are all online courses created equal? How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you? 37 We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 38 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in person courses. 39 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
40 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meeting s with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A.But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines.
B.Your motivation should be your main concern.
C.Do you know that online courses are also part of your education?
D.Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E.The chief complain t about online courses is that they lack human interaction.
F.If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade?
G.A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.B
由文章第一段“At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up. (在顶尖大学中,有一种被称为“斯坦福鸭子综合征”的现象。就像鸭子一样,学生们表面上看起来行动优雅。然而,在水面之下,他们正拼命划水以跟上节奏。)”和第二段中“Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success.
由文章第三段中“As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning. (随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动明显增加,特别是在与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域。)”和第四段中“The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. (这项研究表明,随着任务需要更多的努力,大脑更多的区域会变得活跃。)”可知,实验通过展示任务难度增加时,大脑活动特别是与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域活动明显增加,来挑战“天才轻松成功,努力者能力不足”的误解,证明了努力会激发大脑活动。故选A。
由文章第二段中“This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable. (这付出了高昂的代价:疲惫和焦虑普遍存在。此外,这还导致了一个常见的误解:真正的天才能够轻松取得成功,而那些努力的人则能力较差。)”可知,作者对“斯坦福鸭子综合征”的主要担忧是它导致学生产生对成功的错误观念,即认为真正的天才能够轻松取得成功,而努力工作的人则能力较差。故选B。
27.推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段中“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time. (成长不仅仅来自天赋,还来自持续的努力。我们的大脑就像肌肉一样。如果不努力,即使我们天生的才能也会随着时间的推移而消退。)”和“By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work.

根据第三段第一句“One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. (高中与初中最不同的一个方面是更高的期望。)”可知,高中与初中最大的不同就是被给予的期望更高。故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第四段第二句中的“One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.(提前为这些更高的期望做好准备的一种方法是确保在开始高中之前,你已经安排好了时间表。)”可知,高一新生需要有序地安排日程表,可排除A项;第五段第三句中的“Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.(与朋友和老师保持健康的关系是确保你有愿意在需要时提供帮助的人的好方法。)” 根据最后一段最后一句“These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.(这些挑战为重塑自我提供了绝佳的机会。)”
根据最后一段“It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent
How to Get Through the Transition of Freshman Year of High School(如何度过高中一年级的过渡期)适合作本文最佳标题。故选A项。
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.D 35.A
根据文章第二段“However, most of my language teachers found this irritating rather than encouraging because I didn’t pay attention in class. I drew during lectures and my homework grades were far from satisfaction due to me almost never handing anything in.”However, most of my language teachers found this irritating rather than encouraging because I didn’t pay attention in class. I drew during lectures and my homework grades were far from satisfaction due to me almost never handing anything in.
根据文章第二段“As an adult, I think many of them believed I had to be cheating, especially the one who refused to give me a bonus point on a test that would have raised my average score to an A for the quarter because I was not an A student on account of my study habits in her eyes. (作为一个成年人,我认为他们中的许多人认为我肯定是在作弊,特别是那位老师,她拒绝在考试中给我加分,本来那会使我的季度平均分达到A,因为在她看来,由于我的学习习惯,我并不是个能得到A的学生)”可知,这位老师认为作者的学习习惯不好,不值得给他加分。因此,她认为作者不配得到这个加分。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“My mom tended to force me to complete my piles of missing assignments during the last week of each quarter, so that I didn’t completely destroy my otherwise good grades. (我妈妈倾向于在每个季度的最后一周强迫我完成一堆遗漏的作业,这样我就不会完全毁掉我原本的好成绩)”可知,作者的妈妈会推动作者完成缺失的作业。故选D项。
35.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Because at no point in this process did I look up from the drawing I was working on with my other hand. I didn’t think she figured out that the drawing was actually helping me pay attention, but she at least realized it wasn’t damaging anything and stopped blaming me when she caught me drawing instead of taking notes. (因为在这个过程中,我从未用另一只手从我正在绘制的图纸上抬起头来。我以为她没有意识到这幅画实际上是在帮助我集中注意力,但她至少意识到这并没有破坏任何东西,当她发现我画画而不是做笔记时,她就不再责怪我了)”可知,老师看到我没有记笔记却能回答正确问题时,她没有责备我,或者贸然认为我没在认真听课,老师能够包容学生上课的表现并且谨慎对待,因此她是一个宽容而且对学 生负责的老师。故选A项。

根据上文中的“a Teacher Guide, Textbook and Pupil Practice Book for each Year(1-6)”可知此处指不止一本书,应该用可数名词复数形式,故填books。

Best wishes,
Li Hua

注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

I was completely knocked out by the news.

Finally came the big moment.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
