Glenn Cunningham,“the Kansas Ironman”, was an American middledistance runner, and was considered the greatest American miler of all time.
Glenn was born in Kansas on August 4, 1909. At 7, Glenn was badly burned in an accidental fire in their schoolhouse. The little boy did survive after a long battle, though doctors told his mother that he was sure to die. Unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. But with his iron persistence and determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk and then to run.
By the time he was 12, he had beaten all the local high school runners. His legs remained deeply scarred, however. Throughout his life, he would have to spend time doing long warmup exercises in order to maintain circulation (血液循环). In addition, his injuries meant that he could never run smoothly or efficiently.
When in university, he ran for the university track team and won his first big race, the 1932 NCAA 1500 meters. That summer, he was selected for the U.S. Olympic track team and came in fourth in the 1500meter race in the Olympic Games. In 1933, he won the AAU 800 meters with a time of 1′51.8″. Overall, he ran 20 races during that summer. That year he was called “Ironman”.
Although Glenn might have used his name as a star athlete to make a great deal of money, he was more interested in helping others. He and his wife opened the Glenn Cunningham Youth Ranch and raised over 10,000 foster children over three decades.
Throughout his life, Glenn won many awards including the Sullivan Memorial Trophy. He was also elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. As an example of the power of positive thinking and faith in oneself, Glenn continues to be an inspiration to many.
24. What helped Glenn regain the ability to walk?
A. His strong will. B. His mother’s support.
C. His great desire to win races. D. His continuous treatment.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why warmup exercises were necessary.
B. What effects the accident had on Glenn.
C. How Glenn beat other high school runners.
D. Why Glenn could recover from the injuries.
26. Why did Glenn get the name “Ironman”?
A. He won the championship in the Olympics.
B. He competed in many races in a single year.
C. He got the strongest body in the track team.
D. He wore a pair of iron sports shoes in games.
27. Which of the following can best describe Glenn?
A. Caring and determined. B. Hardworking and humorous.
C. Warmhearted and ambitious. D. Welleducated and optimistic.

Recently, as a journalist, I have published many stories about social media, privacy and artificial intelligence (AI), among other things. So when ChatGPT told me that my output may have influenced its responses to other people’s prompts (提示), I rushed to wipe my data from its memory. As I quickly discovered, however, there is no delete button. AI-powered chatbots never forget what they have learned, because they are trained on data sets including vast numbers of websites and online articles. As long as they exist on the Internet, they get to be remembered.
That means the likes of ChatGPT are possible to let out sensitive personal information, if it has appeared online, and that the companies behind these AIs will struggle to make good on “right-to-be-forgotten” regulations, which force organizations to remove personal data on request. It also means we are powerless to stop hackers (黑客) controlling AI outputs by planting misinformation or ill instructions in training data. All of these explain why many computer scientists are busy to teach AIs to forget. While they are finding that it is extremely difficult, “machine unlearning” solutions are beginning to appear. And the work could prove vital beyond addressing concerns over privacy and misinformation.
The new generation of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, which produce text in response to our prompts, are underpinned by large language models. These are trained on mountains of data, most of which is scraped from the Internet. From this, they learn to spot statistical patterns, which means they can predict the likeliest next word in a sentence, producing fluent answers to our every question.
The trouble is that the way AI chatbots work means that when they learn something, it can’t be unlearned. This creates a significant problem when it comes to privacy, as Dr. Zhang made clear in recent research. He highlighted how difficult it will be for AI companies to obey the “right to be forgotten”, which the European Union declared a human right back in 2014.
28.Why can chatbots store what it has learned forever?
A. Lack of a delete button. B. Manual code entry.
C. Strong review ability. D. The way they are trained.
29.Why do scientists try to teach AI to forget?
A. Because AI has many security risks.
B. Because AI stores limited information.
C. Because AI needs to be updated regularly.
D. Because AI imitates humans completely.
30.According to Paragraph 3, what can we learn about chatbots?
A.Chatbots can answer 90% of the questions.
B.Chatbots’ data comes from the designer’s software.
C.Chatbots produce the answers based on the prompts.
D.Chatbots can predict your problems in advance.
31.What does the underlined word “underpinned” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Controlled. B.Adjusted. C.Boosted. D.Supported.
D
Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular among patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle, making injections(注射) an unpleasant experience. Now, new research led by Giovanni Traverso at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a way to give medicine without this discomfort—by copying how squids(鱿鱼) shoot ink and water.
Dr. Traverso’s tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules that patients can swallow. Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other digestive organs and into the subsurface tissues below. This method allows patients to receive treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising, it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to work effectively, it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue. With skin injections, a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem, Dr. Traverso turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water at high pressure in multiple directions. Inspired by this natural ability, he and his team worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast streams of medicine when activated. Tests on digestive tissues from pigs and dogs showed that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70°.
While human trials have yet to begin, Dr. Traverso hopes the technology will soon help people with diabetes(糖尿病), a disease that requires the patients to get multiple injections daily. A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less stressful. But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes—similar devices may one day be used to administer vaccines, making immunization(免疫接种) more accessible. If all goes well, fear of needles could become a thing of the past.
32. What can we learn about the new injectors from the first two paragraphs?
A. They are made from squid ink.
B. They are invisible to human eyes.
C. They enjoy popularity among patients.
D. They operate within the digestive system
33. What challenge does Traverso’s technique face?
A. Keeping the injector at a correct angle.
B. Finding a proper site for drug delivery.
C. Having reliable medical professionals.
D. Accessing the deep digestive system.
34. What can we infer about the technology from the last paragraph?
A. It proves effective in human trials.
B. It may cure people of needle anxiety.
C. It shows promises for future applications.
D. It will reduce the cost of diabetes treatment.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Secret of Squid Ink Shooting
B. Painless Injection: A Gift from Squid
C. Nature: A Guide for Medical Innovation
D. The Development of Injection Techniques
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Nowadays, many people turn to the Internet for medical advice when they notice signs of illness. This is understandable as seeing a doctor can be time-consuming and costly unless it’s a serious health concern. 36 Often, the answer is: not really.
Medicine is complex. 37 For instance, the cause of a cough in a healthy 25-year-old might be different from that in a 65-year-old smoker. Yet, they might find the same search results. People may also not know the exact terms to search for. A search for “bloating(腹胀)” might suggest eating more slowly or avoiding dairy products, which can help if bloating is from too much air, but not so if it’s from fluid(液体) build-up. Only after seeing a doctor and undergoing a physical examination would it be identified as “ascites(腹腔积水)”.
38 Many articles are written intentionally to make money or promote specific agendas, not to give accurate advice. In fact, only a small part of the health information available online is created with the reader’s best interests in mind.
Fortunately, a few strategies can help us find reliable medical information. First, check the author and website. 39 Government agencies are also trustworthy and offer regularly updated information.
Besides, be careful if a website recommends a specific medication or procedure, especially if it has large ads for that treatment. 40
By following these tips, we can improve our chances of finding useful, accurate, and objective health information.
A. So is this trend bound to continue?
B. But is online medical advice actually reliable?
C. These pages may be created by profit-driven companies.
D. An even bigger issue is the rise of medical misinformation.
E. Online articles often fail to consider each person’s unique situation.
F. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to figure out a website’s intentions.
G. Reliable sources are usually written by doctors or hosted on trusted sites.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

Dear Fuzhou Municipal Government,
As Fujian's mother river, the Min River provides water for 80% of the city's agricultural land and serves as the primary water source for people living in Fuzhou.
However, this vital waterway is facing alarming ecological problems.Untreated wastewater from factories leads to severe water quality issues. Huge amounts of household waste end up in the river, which contributes to this problem too.
We propose that waste water treatment facilities be constructed to improve the water quality. What’s more,it is important to move polluting enterprises and set up strict regulations regarding further industrial development.
We trust the municipal government will take immediate actions to safeguard this natural heritage.
Yours sincerely,
Green Future

参考范文:
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I'd had lunch. Not until then did I hear my stomach rumbling. Shaking my head awkwardly, I said, “I can get lunch somewhere on my way back," not wanting to bother the warm-hearted family any more. "Wait a minute. sir." the girl stammered in broken English, sensing my embarrassment. In a few seconds, the girl turned up, with a paper bag held tightly in her hand. "Here you are." she handed it to me. I thanked the family, and then we waved goodbye with best wishes for each other .
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag. Inside were some Mexican family-made food and the $20 bill.I sat in my car eating the best food I'd ever had and I just started to cry. While I was waiting for help before I met the family, I hated this world. It was the first time I had not been sick of my car trouble and felt lucky to have seen a beautiful hear. From then on, whenever meeting people in need, I have spared no effort to help them like that Mexican family.

Glenn Cunningham,“the Kansas Ironman”, was an American middle-distance
runner, and was considered the greatest American miler of all time.
Glenn was born in Kansas on August 4, 1909. At 7, Glenn was badly burned in an
accidental fire in their schoolhouse. The little boy did survive after a long battle, though
doctors told his mother that he was sure to die. Unfortunately from his waist down, he
had no motor ability. But with his iron persistence and determination, he did develop the
ability to stand up, then to walk and then to run.
By the time he was 12, he had beaten all the local high school runners. His legs
remained deeply scarred, however. Throughout his life, he would have to spend time
doing long warm-up exercises in order to maintain circulation (血液循环). In addition,
his injuries meant that he could never run smoothly or efficiently.
When in university, he ran for the university track team and won his first big race,

the 1932 NCAA 1500 meters. That summer, he was selected for the U.S. Olympic
track team and came in fourth in the 1500-meter race in the Olympic Games. In 1933, he
won the AAU 800 meters with a time of 1′51.8″. Overall, he ran 20 races during that
summer. That year he was called “Ironman”.
Although Glenn might have used his name as a star athlete to make a great deal of
money, he was more interested in helping others. He and his wife opened the Glenn
Cunningham Youth Ranch and raised over 10,000 foster children over three decades.
Throughout his life, Glenn won many awards including the Sullivan Memorial
Trophy. He was also elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. As an
example of the power of positive thinking and faith in oneself, Glenn continues to be an
inspiration to many.
24. What helped Glenn regain the ability to walk?
A. His strong will. B. His mother’s support.
C. His great desire to win races. D. His continuous treatment.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why warm-up exercises were necessary.
B. What effects the accident had on Glenn.
C. How Glenn beat other high school runners.
D. Why Glenn could recover from the injuries.
26. Why did Glenn get the name “Ironman”?

Recently, as a journalist, I have published many stories about social media, privacy
and artificial intelligence (AI), among other things. So when ChatGPT told me that my
output may have influenced its responses to other people’s prompts (提示), I rushed to
wipe my data from its memory. As I quickly discovered, however, there is no delete
button. AI-powered chatbots never forget what they have learned, because they are
trained on data sets including vast numbers of websites and online articles. As long as
they exist on the Internet, they get to be remembered.
That means the likes of ChatGPT are possible to let out sensitive personal
information, if it has appeared online, and that the companies behind these AIs will
struggle to make good on “right-to-be-forgotten” regulations, which force organizations
高二英语 第5页 共 10页
to remove personal data on request. It also means we are powerless to stop hackers (黑
客) controlling AI outputs by planting misinformation or ill instructions in training data.
All of these explain why many computer scientists are busy to teach AIs to forget. While
they are finding that it is extremely difficult, “machine unlearning” solutions are
beginning to appear. And the work could prove vital beyond addressing concerns over
privacy and misinformation.
The new generation of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, which produce text in
response to our prompts, are underpinned by large language models. These are trained
on mountains of data, most of which is scraped from the Internet. From this, they learn
to spot statistical patterns, which means they can predict the likeliest next word in a
sentence, producing fluent answers to our every question.
The trouble is that the way AI chatbots work means that when they learn
something, it can’t be unlearned. This creates a significant problem when it comes to
privacy, as Dr. Zhang made clear in recent research. He highlighted how difficult it will
be for AI companies to obey the “right to be forgotten”, which the European Union
declared a human right back in 2014.

Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular
among patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle,
making injections(注射) an unpleasant experience. Now, new research led by Giovanni
Traverso at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a way to give
medicine without this discomfort—by copying how squids(鱿鱼) shoot ink and water.
Dr. Traverso’s tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules that patients can
swallow. Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the
高二英语 第6页 共 10页
injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other
digestive organs and into the subsurface tissues below. This method allows patients to
receive treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising, it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to
work effectively, it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue.
With skin injections, a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the
digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem, Dr. Traverso turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water
at high pressure in multiple directions. Inspired by this natural ability, he and his team
worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast
streams of medicine when activated. Tests on digestive tissues from pigs and dogs
showed that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70°.
While human trials have yet to begin, Dr. Traverso hopes the technology will soon
help people with diabetes(糖尿病), a disease that requires the patients to get multiple
injections daily. A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less
stressful. But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes—similar devices may
one day be used to administer vaccines, making immunization(免 疫 接 种 ) more
accessible.
B. Painless Injection: AGift from Squid
C. Nature: A Guide for Medical Innovation
D. The Development of Injection Techniques

Nowadays, many people turn to the Internet for medical advice when they notice
signs of illness. This is understandable as seeing a doctor can be time-consuming and
costly unless it’s a serious health concern. 36 Often, the answer is: not really.
Medicine is complex. 37 For instance, the cause of a cough in a healthy 25-
year-old might be different from that in a 65-year-old smoker. Yet, they might find the
same search results. People may also not know the exact terms to search for. A search for
“bloating(腹胀 )” might suggest eating more slowly or avoiding dairy products, which
can help if bloating is from too much air, but not so if it’s from fluid(液体 ) build-up.
Only after seeing a doctor and undergoing a physical examination would it be identified
as “ascites(腹腔积水)”.
38 Many articles are written intentionally to make money or promote specific
agendas, not to give accurate advice. In fact, only a small part of the health information
available online is created with the reader’s best interests in mind.
Fortunately, a few strategies can help us find reliable medical information. First,
check the author and website. 39 Government agencies are also trustworthy and offer
regularly updated information.
Besides, be careful if a website recommends a specific medication or procedure,
especially if it has large ads for that treatment. 40
By following these tips, we can improve our chances of finding useful, accurate,
and objective health information.

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things
happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times,
I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the
windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing.
Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the
father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He
conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we
would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a
section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top,
and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No
worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a
new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy
man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash
our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I
went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl
where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could
work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.
