It contains valuable information on many different subjects, or it can focus deeply on one subject. For over 2,000 years, encyclopaedias have summarized human knowledge to help people learn. The word “encyclopaedia” comes from ancient Greek words meaning “all-round education”. At first, it described a complete system of learning. A German writer, Paul Scalich, was the first to use “encyclopaedia” as the actual title for a book in 1559. Before that, these books often had creative names or were simply called “dictionaries”. Denis Diderot later made “encyclopaedia” more popular with his well-known French “Encyclopédie”. The meaning of “encyclopaedia” has changed greatly. Today, people usually think of a large set of books. These books often include maps, pictures, and an index to help find information. They cover many various topics, including biographies of important people, both in the past and at present. Many experts write these articles, and skilled editors carefully put them together. However, encyclopaedias weren’t always exactly like this. In the past, some were just a single book written by one person, while others were indeed huge sets. They didn’t always have illustrations or information about living people. Arranging topics alphabetically or using languages other than Latin took many years to become very common. Encyclopaedias can cover all knowledge or focus on specific broad areas, like history or science. They are important because they record what people knew at different specific times. Even old encyclopaedias are valuable because they contain writings from many great thinkers and leaders, showing how our understanding of the world has greatly grown. 16.What is the main purpose of an encyclopaedia? A.To replace formal education systems. B.To advertise new scientific discoveries. C.To entertain readers with creative stories. D.To summarize human knowledge for learning. 17.How did early encyclopaedias differ from modern ones? A.They focused only on science. B.They were always written in Latin. C.They often didn’t have illustrations. D.They never covered multiple subjects. 18.What does the underlined word “index” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese? A.索引 B.封皮 C.脚注 D.标题 19.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (①Modern features     ②Definition     ③Value     ④Past features     ⑤History) A.②→⑤→①→④→③ B.⑤→②→④→①→③ C.②→①→⑤→③→④ D.①→⑤→②→④→③ 20.Where is the passage probably taken from? A.A fiction novel about Greek scholars. B.A museum guidebook about ancient books. C.A newspaper article on modern technology. D.An educational magazine on knowledge tools. C Chinese scientists have discovered a new kind of dinosaur that lived 200 million years ago in what is today Southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The scientists plan to carry out further research into how the dinosaur moved and its family relationships. Some fossils of the dinosaur were found several years ago in Yuxi, Yunnan Province, but they were not enough to make sure what kind of dinosaurs they are. However, the recent discovery has provided enough fossil materials to identify it as Asia’s earliest known thyreophoran dinosaurs(覆盾甲龙) for the first time. The research team at the School of Life Sciences in Yunnan University has their research printed in the magazine e-Life. “It is such a meaningful discovery that our team can’t wait to have a deep research on it. The newly found dinosaur will be good for our study of the living environment after disappearance of some creatures from 250 million BC to 200 million BC,” said Xu Xing, one of the researchers. According to the study, the dinosaur was about 3 meters long with four legs. At the same time, it could use its two front legs to catch the leaves of plants when needed. Recent study has shown that this dinosaur’s group spread rapidly, reaching all around the world within 10,000 years. Besides, the fossils provide evidence(证据) for how the different parts of the Earth moved at that time. The team plans to take some parts from the fossil to study how the dinosaur grew and to build a 3D model to study how it moved. “The current fossil is still not fully complete. After we fill in the missing pieces, we can also make a 3D printed model for public education. Yunnan is the kingdom of dinosaurs, so we believe that other unnamed dinosaurs will also be discovered in this place” said Xu. 21.When did the newly found dinosaur lived? A.10,000 years ago. B.200 million years ago. C.250 million years ago. D.20,000 years ago. 22.What does the discovery bring to the researchers? A.Some fossils found in Yunnan University. B.Some reasons for the disappearance of dinosaurs. C.A chance to learn the future environment. D.A record as the earliest known thyreophoran dinosaurs in Asia. 23.Which of the following statement is true? A.Some fossils of the dinosaur were found in Hunan Province. B.The research team has their research printed in the magazine e-Life. C.According to the study, the dinosaur was about 30 meters long with four legs. D.This dinosaur’s group reached all around the world within 100,000 years. 24.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.They team will make a 3D film about the dinosaur. B.They team will find all the dinosaurs in Yunnan Province. C.They team will make the dinosaur model educational. D.They team will study why the dinosaur is not fully complete. 25.What is the structure of the passage? A. B. C. A. B. C. China’s “father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻之父)” Yuan Longping died at 91 on this day. Yuan spent his life researching hybrid rice, which ended hunger for millions of people not only in China, but around the world. Hybrid rice is grown in 57 percent of China’s rice fields. It feeds an extra 80 million people a year. It is also grown in over 40 countries, including India, the US and Brazil, etc. Yuan grew up in a time of war and famine (饥荒). How to get enough to eat was a serious problem in China at that time. After he finished high school, he decided to study agriculture (农业). After seeing many people die of hunger during a serious famine that lasted from 1959 to 1961, he decided to study hybrid rice. In 1973, he succeeded in growing the world’s first high-yield (高产的) hybrid rice. It could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu, higher than the 300-kg yields from normal rice. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest state honor. In 2020, hybrid rice achieved 1,500 kilograms per mu in one growing season, setting a new world record. His team also started to research growing seawater rice in 2016. Their experiment succeeded in 2017. Yuan once said he had two dreams.
