She decided that a machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So, in 1886, she set out to make one for herself.
There are the steps to create inventions. The first and most important step is to find the problem. Then you might notice situations or things in need of improvement. The next step is to work it out. An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of unusual ways. You can often come up with a problem to a solution (解决办法) by looking at it from a different side.
And the hardest part of inventing is finding a solution. When you have an idea, you can always get help to build your invention. This problem-solving skill is very useful. It can also work in your everyday lives. So, why not try it in your study, or even in the way you look at the world?

Passage 11
(24-25九年级上·河北衡水·期中)阅读短文,答下列问题。
What is adolescence (青春期)? When does it start? It starts when you are aged between about ten and thirteen. Here are some changes about you during adolescence. You may not want to spend as much time with your parents as you used to. You want to do more things on your own. In the past, your parents made decisions for you. However, now you want to decide things for yourself and don’t want to be told what to do.
All these changes are completely normal, but they will influence your relationship with your parents. So what can you do to make it better?
Firstly, your parents will feel much better if you let them know that you still love them. Remember that they don’t have the small child you used to be. They may not say so, but they probably feel like something is missing. So try to show your love to them from time to time.
Secondly, try to agree to rules. You may feel these rules are not necessary, but your parents just want to make sure you stay safe. Once you agree to the rules, try to follow them.
Thirdly, try to understand why they feel upset about your behaviour (行为). Do your parents get upset if you spend three hours playing computer games and leave your homework till the last minute? That’s probably because they want you to do well at school.

Passage 15
(24-25九年级上·河北唐山·期中)阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845 –1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery (外科手术).
Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’t think, I investigated (研究).” Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. Passage 20
(24-25九年级上·河北石家庄·期中)Humans have tried to predict (预测) the weather. From the hunters of ancient times to today’s pilots, predicting rain or shine can shape people’s life and make a difference. Do you know how people improve their weather predicting?
In 650 BC, the Babylonians tried to predict the weather based on the appearance of clouds. Around 340 B.C., Aristotle, a famous Greek thinker and scientist, wrote Meteorology. It introduced the types of weather, such as rain, cloud and lightning. Aristotle believed that there was water, air and fire around the Earth. It was almost 2, 000 years before his ideas were replaced by new ones.
By 300 BC in China, a calendar divided the year into 24 festivals gradually, each festival related to a type of weather, like the Rain Water (the start of the spring rains), the Waking of Insects (the spring thunder awakens sleeping insects) and so on. That was useful for farmers to plan when to plant and harvest (收获).
People used lots of ways to predict the weather over the centuries. You might have heard the expressions like “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”, which suggests a red sky in the evening is followed by good weather. This has a basis in science, as does telling wind direction through smoke from the fire. On the other hand, some thought that if sheep crowded together, it meant rain. But there isn’t any science behind it.
The science of weather prediction really took off in the 1830s with the invention of the telegraph (电报). It sent messages over hundreds of thousands of miles, so weather maps were drawn up and storm systems were studied. The next big step came in the 1920s with the invention of the “radiosonde (无线电探空仪)”, a balloon carrying weather Instruments high above the ground to collect information. Experts took the information and built a picture of the weather over the following few days.
Today, Supercomputers are used to take data (数据) from the world. And it is processed very fast to work out the weather. For example, they once helped predict where Hurricane Lee, which hit the US and Canada, would land nine days in advance (提前).

The British artist Dominic Wilcox has created a pair of shoes. They can guide you home no matter where you are in the world. He thought about the fairy tale The Wizard of Oz and how Dorothy could click (点击) her shoes together to go home. Then he decided to make a pair of shoes that can take people home with a click of heels. The shoes can point the way with QPS and clever LEDs (发光二极管) .
Wilcox worked with another artist and a shoe-maker to produce what he calls the “No Place Like Home” shoes.
One of the “No Place Like Home” shoes has a GPS unit inside the heel of the left shoe. It communicates wirelessly (无线方式) with the right shoe and provides data for the LED lights. The LEDs on the left toe guide the wearer in the right direction while those on the right toe show how much of the journey still remains.
It may be an art project. There’s only one pair, but it’s not hard to imagine a similar, more everyday pair of shoes for children, old people or those who always lose their ways in the future.
At present, the “No Place Like Home” shoes are on show (展览) in London.

Besides singing, Li also teaches viewers about Peking Opera in a funny way. People can ask him questions and get answers directly. The livestream has brought this great art to more people, Li said. “It allows young people to know this traditional art and learn more about it in an easy way.”
Other artists also regard the livestream as a new chance. It’s worth (值得) mentioning that there is a China Huafu Day. It began on April 18th, 2018. A big huafu show to celebrate the day is often livestreamed on popular websites. Performers show beautiful clothes in traditional Chinese styles. including those from different dynasties. Passage 06
(24-25九年级上·河北保定·期中)Nowadays, people use computers to do a lot of things every day, like searching for information and sending e-mails. But none of them would go well without the computer mouse.
The first computer mouse appeared in 1964, invented by Douglas Engelbart. It was mainly made up of a wooden “house”, a circuit (电路) board and two wheels. Engelbart called his invention the “Bug”. But the long “tail” on the back made it look like a mouse, so the name became well-known soon.
Eight years later, Bill English, an American computer engineer, developed the mouse further. He changed the wheels into a rolling (滚动的) ball at the bottom of the mouse. The “Ball Mouse” was easier to use and could be found in lots of offices. It had its problems, though. For example, the ball became dirty easily from rolling round the desktop. It had to be often cleaned out to keep the ball running well.
The disadvantages (缺点) led to the next development around 1980. Then the optical mouse (光学鼠标) was invented. However, the optical mouse was too expensive to be widely used.
The computer mouse has come a long way since its invention. It has been improved many times to meet the changing needs of users. But with the rise of touch screens and voice control, some experts think the computer mouse may disappear in the future. However, some people think it will still have a market.

2.How did Bill English improve the mouse?
3.What was the problem with the “Ball Mouse”?
4.Why wasn’t the optical mouse widely used?

(24-25九年级上·河北保定·期中)Two eighth graders from Austin, US, have created a “smart cane (拐杖)”. It helps people who can’t see things clearly.
Ahyan Hassan and Hasan Rizvi made the cane for a school science competition. The cane has sensors (传感器) that can “see” obstacles (障碍物) up to 1.5 meters away. It won the first prize in the competition.
The boys have been best friends since the third grade. “We have lots of things in common. We both like science and have curiosity (好奇心),” Hassan explained. “When we see something, we always want to know how it works or why it works.”
Their idea came from the old canes of Rizvi’s grandfather. “My grandfather is almost blind and has bad legs,” Rizvi said. “It’s hard for him to get from place to place.” So the boys added some sensors to a cane. When they “see” things, they send information to the cane. Then the cane will shake to remind the user.
“I hope this encourages other people to think outside the box, and that’s my goal,” Rizvi said.
Both boys hope to become engineers when they grow up. They also plan to improve their invention to compete in more science fairs in the future.

Passage 08
(24-25九年级上·河北廊坊·期中)阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
You may think that inventions are far away from your everyday lives. But in fact, almost everyone can invent something. It’s just that they do not tell that their ideas could be the start of an invention. When inventors see their ideas have some practical value, they don’t let them slip away (溜走) .
For example, the inventor of the dishwasher (洗碗机) , American Josephine Cochrane, loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took too long to wash her dishes by hand and too many of them broke.
1.Why did Josephine Cochrane decide to invent the dishwasher?
2.When did Josephine Cochrane start to make the dishwasher for herself?
3.What is the first and most important step to create inventions?
4.What is the hardest part of inventing?
5.What can you learn from the passage? How will you use it in your study?

A team from Shenzhen Bao’an High School has invented a medicine box to meet the needs of people with eye problems. So far, the medicine box has won many national prizes.
According to the school, 12 students took part in the development and design (设计) of the box. From the market (市场) research, box design, to app development, the project was completed by the students with the help of their teacher, Zheng Naihao.
The idea of the medicine box came from a field visit. In September 2021, Zheng and his students visited a massage (按摩) shop near the school during their lunch break. Some workers there were blind people. After the visit, the students began to pay attention to the lives of the blind. They found blind people could only tell different medicines by touch. Sometimes it could be difficult to tell the differences between those small pills (药片). Then they decided to try designing a product to help cut down the risk of taking wrong medicines for these people.
Developing a perfect product was not easy. The team had come up with many ideas, including medicine cups. Some students even thought of using AI, but the idea didn’t work because of too many difficulties. Later, the team held discussions for nearly three months and finally decided to develop a medicine box using speech recognition (语音识别) technology.
To solve different problems in the development process, the team members used their free time to study on the box. After more than half a year of learning and improvement, the team created the first medicine box. Now the students are working hard to improve the product and bring it to market as soon as possible.

(24-25九年级上·河北衡水·期中)Have you ever heard of e-waste (electronic waste, 电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one? Most people just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The U.S. was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.
Whether e-waste can be valuable or harmful depends on how we deal with it. People should pay much more attention to e-waste. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic (有毒的) chemicals can get into the earth or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.
What can we do if we don’t throw the e-waste away? We can recycle it. Now some companies have set up their recycling programs. First, they recycle the used products from those who buy new ones from their companies. Then they test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can get computers and phones from those recycling programs.

Finally, it’s all about communication! Keep talking to your parents, tell them about what you did today, let them know where you are going, and ask for advice if you need.

Passage 12
(24-25九年级上·河北邯郸·期中)Reading is a wonderful habit to develop. It is a great thing to do when you are bored. Here are some ways to develop the habit.
Start by reading a few minutes every day. Read every day, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Read when you get up early or before you go to bed. If you can, read at the same time every day. This will make your brain regard it as “reading” time.
Read what you are interested in. Reading can be a trouble if you do not like the book. Reading books that you enjoy will help you stick to your habits ans become a reader. Once you have great interest, it’s hard to put a book down.
Carry a book everywhere. Books can be heavy and big, which used to make it hard to read everywhere. Now you can read books on a smartphone. When you are waiting for a bus or waiting in line at a store, open your book app and read. If you cannot read on an app, find a book that is easy to carry with you.
Set a reading goal. A goal is something you are trying to achieve. Maybe your goal will be to read 5 or 10 books this year, or you even try to read 100 books. Setting a goal will remind you to read every day. Reaching it will make you feel good and make reading even more fun.

Passage 14
(24-25九年级上·河北廊坊·期中)阅读下面短文,按要求完成下面小题。
Teachers find it difficult for students to collect homework before class, and sometimes they may even get mad. To solve this problem, a 13-year-old middle school student invented a smart robot, and he got first prize in the Children’s Invention Awards. His parents are so proud of him.
This smart robot can collect homework in a short time without making any mistakes. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID;射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and recognize (辨别出) the owner of the homework. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, “reads” its tag and takes it out of the name list. Teachers can check who hasn’t handed in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi.
Many teachers speak highly of the smart robot after using it. They think the boy will create more useful AI tools to make life easier. His parents will continue to support him. Inspired (激励) by the words, the boy dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other scientific and creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.

And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.
1.Where is X-ray technology used?
2.When were X-rays discovered?
3.Whose hand was in the first X-ray photo?
4.Why did Röntgen name the ray “X-ray”?
5.What do you think of Röntgen? And why?

Working out (锻炼) through online videos
Physical exercise is good for our mind, body and spirit. Today, working out through online videos is becoming very popular. Since the Internet is widely used, it’s very easy for us to do so. That means we can work out anytime anywhere.
One of my friends, Lin Fei followed short workout videos to do daily exercise. “With live programs, I feel like working out with my friends, which encourages me to hold on to the last minute,” she said. Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that workout videos let him feel so comfortable. “I have a fear of working out at the gym because I don’t like being watched by others. Working out at home makes working out much more enjoyable.” he said.
With their examples, I decided to give it a try. When I told my plan to my elder sister, a PE. teacher, she reminded me that workout videos could be helpful but might still carry some problems.
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing (愿意的) to work out to your best. Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder.” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try. First, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a good sight into what you can expect. Anyway, don’t be addicted (沉迷的) to it. You should try different ways to work out to be healthy.”
At her suggestions, I finally followed an online workout program with personalized (个性化的) help that is held for three months. After the first period of training, I thought it very helpful when I put in the right amount (量) of work along with a strong will. Compared with going to the gym, using online videos to work out is a much cheaper and time-saving choice. But it can be difficult sometimes when I’m too lazy or too busy to stick to it.
1.Which way to work out is becoming very popular today?
2.Why does Michael dislike working out at the gym?
3.What will happen to you without someone else in person?
4.What did the writer think about his first period of training?
5.Do you want to follow online videos to work out? Why or why not?

Passage 18

Late last night, I felt very tired and tried to sleep, but I was woken up by a sudden sound and the sound didn’t stop. I couldn’t sleep then I got up to see where the sound came from. I went to the backyard of my house and saw a very bright light in the sky going towards the forest nearby. I felt worried and decided to see what it was. I took my bicycle and followed the light to the forest. Minutes later, I was in front of a huge spaceship.
I was amazed. When I touched it, a wave(冲击波) pushed me away. I could not move my body, but I could still see. I saw a human…no, a monster…Then, I lost consciousness (知觉).
When I woke up, I was in a large cage. I saw other men and women – in nearby cages. They had either passed out(昏倒) or perhaps died. I watched the cage and found a small dirty window. I cleared the window and saw through it. I saw space!
I also saw the earth getting smaller and smaller as we moved away from it. I didn’t know how I got here. Suddenly, a strange creature(生物) caught my attention. He was half-human and half-monster. For sure, he was not a person living on the earth— he was an alien!
The creature was looking at each cage. Suddenly, he appeared in front of my cage. He said something like, “Zoom zappa zew zhumu zam zeus.” I didn’t understand it, but then a loud sound came. It said, “Hello, New Human. We are the Grays.” It was probably the translation of the words that the creature had just said, I guessed.
I felt afraid. “What is the alien going to do to me?” I wondered.

1.How did the Babylonians predict the weather?
2.Why were the 24 festivals useful for farmers?
3.What does the expression “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight” mean?
4.When did the science of weather prediction really take off?
5.The sentence “Do you know how people improve their weather predicting?” has an objective clause (宾语从句).
