Passage 1
(24-25高二上·江苏南京新华中学·期中)
A few years ago, my wife Sue had some fairly serious health problems. She had suffered surgery after surgery and had also put on weight for several years. Diets had not helped her.
One day we sat down and drew up a “wish list” of the things we wanted most out of life. One of Sue’s items was to run in a marathon. Given her history and physical limitations, I thought her goal was completely unrealistic, but Sue became committed to it.
She began by running very slowly around. Every day she ran just a little farther than she had the day before just one driveway more. “When will I ever be able to run a mile?” Sue asked one day. Soon she was running three. Then five. “We can change ourselves for the better and cause ourselves to pursue our most precious desires with almost total success,” Sue said and registered to run in the St. George Marathon in southern Utah.
I drove the mountainous road from Cedar City to St. George. When the marathon began, I parked the car near the finish line and waited for Sue to come in. Five hours later, it was raining steadily and the wind was cold. Several cold and injured runners had been transported past me, and I began to panic. The image of Sue, alone and cold, off the road somewhere, made me sick with worry. The fast and strong competitors had finished long ago, and runners were becoming fewer and fewer. Now I could not see anyone in either direction.
Almost all of the cars along the marathon route had left, and some normal traffic was beginning. I was able to drive directly up the race route. There were still no runners in view after driving almost two miles. Then I went around a bend in the road and spotted two runners running up ahead.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·江苏盐城·期中)
Throughout my life, I had many students, and a few also became teachers. And one was Jim. We lost contact for several years. His sudden appearance one Christmas reminded me of his past.
I sniffed the air as I closed the classroom windows; still, I couldn’t identify the faint, bad smell. But it was Friday afternoon, my first week of teaching. Although I had fallen in love with my hardworking students, I was exhausted and ready to leave the building.
For the most part, my twenty-four fifth-graders were the children of seasonal agricultural workers. Their parents were employed at the local smelly duck farm and often lived there with their kids. So for these students, bad smells weren’t that unusual.
However, by Monday morning, the smell in the classroom had become so strong. I sniffed until I found it: a smelly sandwich on Jim’s desk. Obviously, it went bad. I wanted to just throw it away, but that seemed rude. It was Jim’s private thing. And simply throwing it away might hurt his pride. So I just rewrapped the sandwich, put it back on his desk and threw open all the windows before my students filed in.
In the previous week, I had noticed Jim was very poor. The lunch he brought to school was a simple sandwich or just bread; sometimes, he even had no lunch. And his grades were the poorest in the class.
At noon that day, the children got their lunch bags and fled to the playground picnic table. I saw Jim unwrap his sandwich and pretend to eat. Making certain the kids didn’t see, he wrapped it again, put it in his pocket and slipped it back into his desk when the class returned. He didn’t want anyone to discover his secret.
Throughout the rest of the day, I wondered how to help Jim in a way that wouldn’t hurt his pride. After school, I discussed the matter with another teacher. At last, we decided to “hire” Jim for classroom tasks like cleaning chalkboards, and we would pay him. But would he accept these classroom jobs?

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·江苏镇江·期中)
One Saturday, a sixteen-year-old boy named Tom was hanging out with his friends at a local cafe. Tom and his friends would usually spend the entire weekend together, before meeting again the following week while in school.
That day, Tom’s mom Gina wanted to change up his routine by inviting him to watch a new superhero movie with her. Gina kept calling Tom on his cellphone, but he wouldn’t pick up. So, she decided to make her way to the cafe where Tom was.
When she spotted Tom and his friends, she made her way to them, only to see Tom’s friends giggling. “Your grandmother’s come to pick you up, Tom!” they teased. Tom glared (怒视) at his mother and walked up to her to stop her from going any closer. “What are you doing here?” he blamed her. “You’re embarrassing me in front of my friends!”
“I just wanted to ask if you wanted to watch a movie with me,” she smiled , trying to hold his hand. Tom shrugged off her hands. “Leave me alone! I’m with my friends!” he told her.
Gina walked back home sadly. When Tom got home that night, it was already half past eleven. He went straight to his room, not even realizing Gina was in the living room.
“What’s the matter, Tom?” Gina asked him. “Why is it that you don’t like being with me anymore? I’m worried about you, Tom. I rarely know what’s going on in your life!” she said.
“You’re such an old, boring woman! Why did you even give birth to me?!” he yelled. Gina felt a pain in her chest. Before she could respond, Tom grabbed his backpack and ran out the door.
“Tom!” Gina called out. Tom rode on his bike and left the street. Gina tried calling out and chasing after him, but he was too fast. Then, she fainted(晕倒) in front of one of her neighbor’s houses.

Passage 4
(24-25高二上·江苏泰州·期中)
At the age of nine, I always rode the bus alone because I was responsible, never making troubles. The next stop was the trailer park, where a boy, older than me, got on the bus. But his hands stuffed in jean jacket pockets, he didn’t even bring them out to pay his fare, speaking to the driver so low that I couldn’t hear.
Passengers around were frowning. The driver waved at the boy like shooing a fly and then jerked a thumb to indicate he should go and sit down. The boy walked past me, eyes on the untied sneakers, which were a size too big for him.
Just then, someone whispered, rough as sandpaper, loud enough to be caught by all our ears. “Trailer park people never have the money.” Another voice, sharp as a needle, responded, “They always expect a free ride.”
I glanced around quickly, seeing the hurt boy with his nose bright pink. I had experienced the same feeling about being looked down upon with mean words. So I reached deep in my pocket for the plastic baggies that held the change.
The driver glared at me because I was out of my seat while the bus was in motion. I whispered, “For that boy in the back.” The coins fell into the fare box. The machine beeped to say a child’s fare had been paid. The driver stared at me and raised one thick brown eyebrow and the jut of his chin told me to go back to my seat.
Two weeks later, I parted with my best friend after enjoying ourselves in the cinema for the whole afternoon. When her mother offered to drive me home, I declined, for it was only a drizzle then. However, it rained heavily soon, and the wind roared to life, letting loose the rain with a will. By the time the bus I waited for slowly pulled up, I dug in my pockets for money, which was surprisingly empty. Only then did I realize I had spent it all in the cinema, forgetting to save some for the bus.

Passage 5
(24-25高二上·江苏徐州·期中)
I had no idea how confusing Mother’s Day could be until something happened during Writing Club at the library. We had different topics to write about each week. And the third week, our librarian, Mr. Sendak, put lots of cookbooks on every table.
“Mother’s Day falls on this Sunday. Today we’re going to write down food memories related to your mothers,” said Mr. Sendak. “Let’s see if the pictures in these cookbooks remind you of anything your mother cooked and you especially loved to eat or drink growing up. Write your story down.”
“Yes! I love it!” my friend Ollie said, grabbing a book of chocolate recipes.
I started turning the pages of a breakfast cookbook and stopped at a recipe for Belgian waffles (华夫饼).
“Oooh!” I said, “This makes me think of the time my mum made fancy blueberry waffles for my fifth birthday and my parents let me pour my own syrup.”
“Syrup is the best part!” said James, a new friend that Ollie and I had met at Writing Club.
“I’m going to write about that!” I smiled.
“Chocolate cake,” Ollie said as he looked through the pictures. “Oh! Mexican hot chocolate. That’s it! I remember the first time I was in hospital! I was so sad and sore until my mum made me some special hot cocoa. I’m going to write about that.”
James just kept flipping through the books.
“What’s your favorite food memory?” I asked.
James shrugged (耸肩).
“Come on,” said Ollie. “We want to hear about it!”
James sighed, put down his cookbook, and said, “Saturday night was always breakfast-for-dinner night. My mum used to make the best French toast with apple butter.”
“Yum!” I said, “How did you start that tradition?”
But James didn’t answer. He just picked up his pen and started to write.
Half an hour later, when it was time to say goodbye, Ollie said, “Hey, I just had a genius idea. If we put our waffles, French toast, and hot- cocoa recipes together, we could make an amazing Mother’s Day brunch for our mothers.”
“Yes!” I shouted loudly, “I bet my parents will let us have it in our backyard (后院). Do come with your mothers.”
James put his backpack over his shoulder. “Sorry. I’m busy that day.”
Ollie laughed. “Do you know the future? We didn’t even choose a day yet.”
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face.

Passage 6
(24-25高二上·江苏常州·期中)
In the town of Riverton, surrounded by hills and lakes, the annual marathon brought the community together for a lively festival. Colorful banners waved in the breeze as families set up picnic blankets and children painted their faces.
This year, the focus was on two athletes: Sarah, a devoted runner, and Jake, a relaxed natural talent. For months, Sarah woke up early, putting on her well-worn running shoes as the sun rose. She pushed herself through tough workouts, running up the challenging hills nearby. She dreamed of crossing the finish line, not for herself, but to inspire young runners at the local youth center who looked up to her. On the other hand, Jake had a natural talent for running. With messy hair and a friendly smile, he was the life of every event. He often took selfies during his runs, sharing laughs and jokes along the way. Though he was a strong competitor, he cared more about having fun than strict training, enjoying the excitement of the moment.
As race day approached, Sarah felt the weight of expectations. The gold medal shone in her mind as a symbol of hope, but she worried that Jake, with his natural abilities, would be a tough competitor.
On race day, Riverton was full of energy. The crowd’s cheers felt like a heartbeat, and the smells of popcorn (爆米花) and baked goods filled the air. Sarah lined up at the front of the starting line, her heart racing with the countdown, while Jake chatted with friends, enjoying himself in the lively atmosphere behind her.
When the starting gun fired, Sarah dashed ahead with great determination, her every step a proof to her months of strict training. Meanwhile, Jake started the race in a relaxed manner, taking in the lively crowd and the colorful banners swaying (摇摆) in the wind. The race went just as expected—Sarah was in the lead. But as they reached the middle of the course, dark clouds gathered in the sky.

Passage 7
(24-25高二上·江苏连云港·期中)
A Cold Winter Evening
In his little American household, which housed several people from his family, Jase was writing letters to Santa weeks before Christmas…
“Dear Santa,
It’s me, Jase! Daddy bought me a special costume, but it didn’t feel special. How about you give me something different this year? Then I can be a true hero and save lives. I can be a firefighter, you know! Please grant my wish!”
After writing the letter, Jase tucked it under his pillow and dozed off. A few days later, when he ran down the stairs, he saw a giant Christmas tree in the living room and a pile of parcels underneath it. “This is for Mom… This one is for Dad… Where’s mine?” “Yay! Gotcha!” he exclaimed as he began unwrapping it. As Jase saw it was a firetruck, he couldn’t contain his excitement. Jase had learned at school that firefighters were true heroes who saved people from danger. So the little boy wished to be a firefighter, and all his favorite toys were also related to firefighters!
Jase’s family had his twin sisters, Milly and Rosie, his dad, Peter, and his mom, Lydia. They were happy in their cozy tiny home, and every celebration in their household was a sweet affair. Jase was so happy with his Christmas present that year that he spent the whole day driving his toy truck. He also gave his little sisters a ride in it, and they loved it.
After dinner that night, when everyone was asleep, Jase was up and decided to drive the truck around the house. He had enjoyed it so much that he hadn’t left his truck for even an hour that day! When he couldn’t sleep, he decided to take his truck down to the living room and play with it. Suddenly, Jase felt something strange — a mixture of smoke, heat, and light — and stopped. When he turned around, he saw smoke from the Christmas tree, its bottom in flames. Jase’s parents had forgotten to put out some candles, which had caught the tree’s back and the living room curtains on fire.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·江苏苏州·期中)
Staring at myself in the mirror, I raised my eyebrows at my mom with confusion.
“Is this fish-like costume what they wanted?” I asked.
Mom insisted that she had followed the pattern exactly. I sighed and looked back at the mirror. Somehow Mom had convinced me to do a play this summer. So here I was about to play the Fish Footman in the local community theater production of Alice in Wonderland. It didn’t exactly fill me with confidence. “Well, there’s no turning back now,” Mom said, “Tomorrow is your opening night.”
“What if…” I hesitated. “What if I forget my lines? And I don’t think this costume is right.”
Mom gave me a knowing smile and pulled me in for a fierce hug, “You are the best actor on that stage, whether you’re wearing a fish tail or not. I know you’ve been rehearsing(排练) for two months; you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.”
Despite her words, I still felt a knot in my stomach as the hour of opening night drew near.
The next day, Mom led me to the back of the auditorium, where children in various costumes were chatting merrily. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup table. In a moment, it was done. My jaw dropped as I saw my green cheeks and brilliant blue lips.
“Mom, I can’t go out on stage like this!” I cried, “I’d be a laughingstock(笑柄)!”
She comforted me that I was not the only one in an odd costume and dismissed the idea of escape from my mind.
With no other options, I sat alone as the play began. I looked in horror at the vague figures onstage. The audience’s laughter seemed to come from miles underwater— ironic(讽刺的), given I was supposed to be a fish. My only thought was soon it would be me in the spotlight.
The stage manager said something to me. I nodded blankly in response and turned to face the music as the light dimmed and tune came on to accompany the scene change.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·江苏泰兴南通如皋·期中)
It was a cold, sunny December day when I set out for a run in Moab, Utah, with my dog, Taz. I often went for training runs by myself and had done this particular route before.
About an hour into my run along a remote canyon (峡谷) trail, I hit a patch of black ice and then fell 60 feet into the canyon, landing on a ledge (岩脊) above a sheer (陡峭的) drop. I wasn’t paralyzed, but I was in great pain. Taz had managed to find his way back to me, so there must be a way out of the canyon, but I couldn’t stand or even crawl.
I shouted for help and was intent on dragging myself to the bottom of the canyon. Every inch was an effort. It took me five hours to go a quarter of a mile. Eventually, it got so dark that I had to stay where I was for the night, next to a puddle of water. At night the temperature dropped below freezing. Taz stayed with me, providing some warmth.
The next morning, I couldn’t move at all I tried to stay positive. I was sure somebody would hear me screaming for help. The second night in the canyon seemed even longer and colder. The puddle turned to ice, and I had to crack through it to get water.
On the third day, I felt myself growing weaker. I was coming to terms with the fact that I might die. In a last-ditch effort, I called Taz over and told him to go and get help. Taz took off through the canyon and I lay there thinking about my family and friends. There was more that I wanted from life.

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·江苏扬州·期中)
“You should go for it,” Artie said, giving my shoulder a squeeze as we stood gazing at the poster. ‘Cinderella — auditions (试镜) this Thursday after school,’ the words proclaimed.
“Me?” My voice came out as a frightened squeak. “Come on, Amy. You probably know the entire play off by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella.” he encouraged. I knew he was joking, but the truth was, I could tell you every single line (台词) in the play.
When we reached the hall on Thursday, I began to wish I hadn’t signed up to be Cinderella. It was easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the sign-up sheet. Since then, seven other girls have added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader (拉拉队长).
Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr Cordoza said approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions.
Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she tossed her long blonde hair and recited her lines. Although she lacked an understanding of the lines, her performance was attractive.
Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning.
“When you’re ready,” Mr Cordoza said, sounding impatient.
“Sorry,” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat. “I...I…” I stuttered. ‘Speak up Amy, can’t hear you!’ jeers and whistles came from the back of the hall. I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine. Finally, I limped to the end of the scene, and as soon as it was over, I rushed off the stage, feeling defeated.
As I made my way through the hallway, I spotted Artie waiting for me.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·江苏宿迁·期中)
Race at River’s Edge
When we arrived in Tournus, my cousin Gabriel and I parked our bikes and walked to the town square. We’d just ridden 33 kilometers, and we were starving. We planned to get lunch and then ride back to Macon, a small city in France on the Saône River. I was spending the summer there with Gabriel’s family. It was market day. Locals are busy filling their baskets with groceries. Tourists hunted for souvenirs. Gabriel and I bought a long, thin loaf of bread and some cheese I’m obsessed with. It tastes awesome.
As we ate, I noticed a girl wearing a USA Basketball T-shirt. She smiled at us. Basketball is big in France too. You can even watch NBA games on TV. The girl stopped to shop with someone that I guessed was her mom because they looked so much alike.
I saw them again by the river. They sat on a bench enjoying their snacks in front of a long, narrow riverboat named Voyageur, which had docked (停靠码头) earlier. Then they boarded the boat. It was preparing to leave. As the ship started to pull away, I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it!
I looked up. Some passengers were gathering on the upper deck of the riverboat, including the girl and her mom.
I held up the bag and waved it to get their attention while Gabriel called to them.
When the girl noticed the bag, she opened her mouth in surprise. But her face fell as the boat started to pull away from the dock. She didn’t think she’d get her stuff back.
“Maybe we can throw it to her, Hugo! ” Gabriel said.
“It’s too light,” I said. “It would end up in the river. We have to find a way to return it! ”
Running alongside the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the boat’s next stop was Macon—our destination as well.
“Do you think we can keep up?” I asked.
Gabriel laughed. “We’re about to find out!”

The night had deepened and all was quiet. But Jack was burning the midnight oil, busy with his revision work, determined to improve his grades. A wave of tiredness crept over him; he stretched his arms and drank another cup of coffee. He felt refreshed and continued to work hard. He knew he couldn't let his recent failures define him.
That morning, as the test papers were handed back, Jack was shocked to find that he got the only D in his class. Though he didn’t do well in his lessons, the unexpected grade hit him hard. Most of his classmates got their desired grades, their laughter and chatter feeling like a painful reminder of his failure. He couldn't help but recall that he always passed exams with C, and in his parents' eyes, he was a total failure. This painful reality weighed heavily on him. Staring at the glaring D grade on his paper, Jack felt he should do something. He couldn’t continue down this path. He needed to change.
From that day, he was more focused and eager to learn in class. He raised his hand more often, contributing more, and his assignments showed his hard work and dedication. His teacher, Ms. Green, impressed by his efforts, praised him in front of the class. His classmates started to see him differently too, giving him friendly smiles and support, which boosted his confidence. Everyone noticed a big change in Jack, except his busy parents.
After a month of hard work, the day of the next exam finally arrived. Jack walked into the examination hall with confidence, feeling well prepared and ready to face the challenges ahead. As he worked through the test, everything seemed to flow smoothly. When the bell rang, he felt he could make it this time.
Two days later, the results were announced. Jack was excited to see his amazing grade — B+. “Well done, Jack! We are all so proud of you!” Ms. Green said. After school, Jack rushed out, eager to show his parents his B+ grade.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·江苏淮安中学·期中)
It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I decided to have a bedside table with lockable drawers (抽屉), a safe place to keep my private stuff. With my parents, I went to the charity shop where we found a used dark table. It was old and didn’t look cool, but I thought I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed (密封的) bag with some papers in it. When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped (包装) in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! I found a treasure on my birthday! “Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will (遗嘱). An old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. “Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?” I began counting. Two thousand dollars! I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (进退两难的窘境)! I wished there were someone I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it…, right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But in fact I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·江苏苏大附中·期中)
“We’ve got this,” my friend Alex laughed loudly as we stepped off the library steps. “Absolutely, we’ve got this,” I agreed, performing a little victory dance on the sidewalk once the library door had closed behind us. We had both been nominated (提名) for the Youth Excellence Program, an honor and a chance almost every student was crazy about.
That weekend, Alex and I sat in my living room, carefully completing the program application. We each aimed to show we had all qualities the program valued: academic excellence, leadership, community service, integrity, and civic responsibility. I detailed my devotion to challenging courses, while Alex described his volunteer work at the local food bank. We left no stone unturned, fully confident in our joint success.
The following day, we submitted our applications to the teacher hopefully.
Weeks passed.
Then one day, I received a letter about the project. I rushed out of the classroom and opened it. I felt a stab of sadness right in my heart: my name was not on the list.
At that very moment, I saw Alex came jogging over, waving his letter with a beaming smile. It was clear he had news that contrasted with my own. Without hesitation, I turned away to avoid him. I knew he was eager to share his joy. Perhaps, he even had planned to celebrate the good news together with me.
But I just couldn’t face it: they picked him but refused me. How could fate be so unjust? Anger and despair just blinded me.
That afternoon, on the school bus, I sat alone and avoided eye contact with Alex. When the bus arrived at my street, I just jumped off, without saying goodbye or smiling to him. I hurried home, thrusting (塞) the letter into my mom’s hands. I buried my face in the cushions, sobbing uncontrollably as waves of heartache swept over me.

Passage 3
(23-24高二上·江苏靖江高级中学·期中)
I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. “Look Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

Passage 5
(23-24高二上·江苏南通海安中学·期中)
I begged my mom to let me make cookies by myself. Even though I had never attempted baking before, I was nine years old and my friend Emmie had been baking cupcakes by herself for a year. I was determined to prove that I could make it.
My brother, Caleb, laughed at the idea of me cooking alone, calling it a disaster. Having a big brother can be annoying. Despite his laughing, my mom agreed to let me try. She reminded me to take my time and be careful because I’d had some messy spills before I was nine.
I raced to the kitchen and went to work. I cracked eggs and put a cold stick of butter into the bowl. I turned on the mixer at medium speed—and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! What a disaster! I had to wipe butter off my face, then off the table and floor.
Caleb made fun of me again, calling me a mess. I chased him away with a spoon and turned back to the mixing bowl. I started again with softer butter. Referring to the recipe, I poured everything needed into the bowl and mixed it. After that, I put round batter (面糊) onto the cookie sheet and put it into the oven (烤箱). Within a minute, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen—the smell of cookie success!
I was going to prove that I was responsible. No more eye-rolling from my brother. No more “You’re too young” from my parents. I was grown up and in control.
I stared into the oven, and my heart sank. The neat, little balls had melted (融化) and overflowed to the edges of the cookie sheet. I pulled the pan out just as Caleb wandered back into the kitchen.
“What in the world?” He started to laugh. “Cookie soup?”
“You just be quiet,” I whispered, trying not to cry. “Just leave me alone.”
“How’s it going in there?” Dad called from the living room.
Caleb raised his eyebrows and bit his lip. I responded that everything was fine, pouring the melted batter into the bowl quickly.

主题01 人与自我——生活故事

【答案】作答示例
It was Sue in the company of a girl runner, struggling. As I approached them, I noticed the pair dragging their feet and running forward awkwardly with their shoes wet. I pulled off and called. “Are you okay?” “Oh, yes!” Sue said, almost out of breath. The girl also nodded and kept moving. I had wanted to offer them a ride in, but the resolve in their eyes made me swallow back the words. I turned around and followed. Inch by inch, they were getting closer to the finish line. Eventually, the real winners in my heart ran past the finish line.
At the finish line, the girl hugged Sue, “You made me believe we could do it.” She added, “Sue described so vividly how it would be like to finish that I knew I could do it.” Sue smiled back. “I’ve been dreaming about this day for two years and I shall not be denied”. Greatly moved, the girl promised she would never quit anything easily without total success. At that moment, I looked at Sue and found she was carrying herself differently. It was not as if she had become someone new; it was more as if she had discovered a real self she had not known before. She truly liked her newly discovered self. So did I.

【答案】
The next day after school, we asked Jim to come into our office. He looked nervous, probably expecting some kind of punishment for the smelly sandwich. Instead, we explained our plan to him: he would be paid for helping out with classroom tasks. His eyes lit up with surprise and relief. He agreed immediately, eager to earn some extra money. We also assured him that this was a way to help him and the class, and it wouldn’t affect his dignity. From that day on, Jim worked hard, not only keeping the classroom clean but also showing more confidence in class. But, for some reasons, I had to leave, without a chance to communicate with the new teacher.
“Will Jim’s new teacher hire him and spare time to help with his study, too?” I wondered. As it turned out, Jim’s new teacher was even more supportive. She noticed his improvement in attitude and offered to tutor him after school. Jim seized the opportunity, and with the extra help, his grades began to soar. By the end of the year, he was one of the top students in the class. More importantly, he had gained a sense of self-worth and learned that hard work could lead to success. Jim’s transformation was a testament to the power of compassion, understanding, and a little extra help.

【答案】
When Tom got home late that night, he saw a neighbor at their door. The neighbor, with a look of concern, informed Tom that his mother had fainted and was rushed to the hospital. Tom’s mind went blank as he processed the information, his heart pounding in his chest. A wave of guilt washed over him as he realized what he had done to his mother. He quickly grabbed his bike keys and dashed outside, his bike already waiting for him in the driveway. The cool night air rushed past him, the streetlights casting flickering shadows on his path. Every pedal felt like a race against time as he pushed himself to reach the hospital as soon as possible.
After riding for half an hour, Tom arrived at the hospital. Breathless and drenched in sweat, he rushed to the reception desk and asked for his mother’s room. The nurse directed him to a softly lit room where Gina lay. Her face was pale, but her eyes lit up when she saw her son. Tom inched/edged to her bedside, tears streaming down his face. He grabbed her hand and whispered apologies for his recent behavior. Gina, with a weary but forgiving smile, reassured him that she was okay and that they could work through their differences. As they held each other’s hands, sharing words of understanding and love, the tension between them melted away.

【答案】
I looked at the driver helplessly, at his eyes under his thick, bushy brown eyebrows. I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest as I tried to explain the unexpected trouble. With heavy rain, my hair was a wet curtain in my face. Looking at me for a few seconds, the driver smiled, signing me to get on the bus quickly. I stared at the face of the driver, only to find that it was the same driver who, two weeks before, witnessed my offer to pay for the boy.
The fare machine beeped, saying the fare for a child had been paid. Hearing this, I felt relieved and grateful. The smallest but warmest smile in the world spread on the driver’s face. A sense of amazement dominated my heart, for I realized that my simple act of kindness was returned in the least expected manner. From now on, I’m always going to carry two fares worth of money in my pocket. It’s a reminder that little kindness can go a long way in making a better world.

On Sunday morning, James and his father came to join us. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face. “Actually”, he said, “my mom doesn’t live with my dad and me right now.” So surprised were Ollie and I that we stood there, speechless. James explained that his mum had to be in prison for a while and he hardly ever got to see her. “I miss her so much”, he added in a choked voice. Hearing that, Ollie and I immediately understood his tough situation. “How about inviting your dad this Sunday morning?” Ollie suggested, eager to cheer him up. Though hesitant, James called his father with Ollie’s cellphone. Luckily, his father agreed to come, which made James and me jump with joy.
On Sunday morning, James and his dad came to join us. In the backyard of our house, we three families cooked waffles, French toast and hot cocoa together. It was a lot of work; however, it was worth the effort when we shared the food together, especially when we saw smiles on James’s face. The food turned out great and everyone had a wonderful time.

【答案】
Suddenly, heavy rain poured down, making the road very slippery. Sarah thought she would win the race because she had trained so hard. Although the road was slippery, Sarah kept accelerating. Meanwhile, she kept looking back at Jake. But Jake still didn’t look so serious, as if he was enjoying the scenery. Suddenly, Sarah slipped and fell to the ground. But Sarah knew she had to get back on her feet as soon as possible. She struggled to get up.
Jake, who had been following behind, caught sight of Sarah as she struggled to rise. Suddenly Jake picked up speed. Sarah was desperate and thought that she was going to lose the race. When Jake got to Sarah’s side, he stopped and came to her help. Looking at Jake, Sarah couldn’t believe what had just happened. Smiling, Jake said, “Pull yourself together and let’s finish the race together.” Shoulder by shoulder, they began the race again. They arrived at the finish line together. People immediately realized what had happened, and the crowd burst into thunderous applause.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The fire was spreading fast, and Jase shook with fear. “Mom! Dad!” he shouted as he rushed upstairs to wake up his twin sisters. Milly sat up, blinking sleepily and ran downstairs with him, but Rosie was asleep, so he carried her in his arms, put his sisters in the truck and then hared off to his parents’ room, screaming at them. The couple was startled awake and called 911. Soon, the firefighters arrived and sprang into action. The fire was extinguished at length. While fighters performed their duties desperately, Jase could barely take his eyes off the “heroes”.
One of the firefighters patted Jase’s shoulder and said, “Good job!” Jase smiled back at him and uttered brimming with confidence, “Thank you, sir. I will become a real hero like you someday.” As the fighters left, Jase gazed after them with admiration. In the following years, he went to extraordinary lengths to pursue his childhood dream. And well, today, Jase has helped several families from such tragic events, and he is indeed a hero, a firefighter. Sometimes, he looks back at the “firetruck” and feels proud of how far he has come.

【答案】
I knew it was my time to enter. My heart pounded like a drum while my feet remained firmly planted on the floor. Knowing that Mom was expecting my appearance, I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage, ready to face the unknown. I could hear the murmur of the audience, but at that time, I saw Mom among them. Inspired, I managed to perform as I had done in rehearsals.
Determined to leave a lasting impression, I poured my emotions into the performance. Forgetting the fear, I allowed myself to become the Fish Footman. My movements became flexible and natural, which echoed the grace of an underwater dancer. Each line I spoke was filled with sincerity, and the audience’s initial laughter transformed into complete silence. By the time my part ended, the applause thundered like a welcome home. At that moment, I knew I had overcome my fear and I was ready to face the challenge in the future.

Taz returned, alone. Then I heard an engine in the distance. I cried with joy. It turned out that Taz had found a search and rescue team. I was airlifted to the hospital, where doctors found I had lost almost half the blood in my body. If the rescue team had arrived later, I wouldn’t have made it. Fortunately, it’s not too late. I was rushed to the hospital in time for treatment.
After leaving the hospital, I was in a wheelchair for three months. The physical therapy was tough, but I was driven by the memory of Taz’s unwavering loyalty and my own desire to live. My legs slowly regained strength, and I learned to walk again. Taz was always by my side, cheering me on with his wagging tail and loving eyes. Our bond had deepened through adversity, and I owed my life to him. From that day on, I cherished every moment, knowing that life was precious and that love had the power to conquer even the darkest valleys.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). At the news, I sighed and forced a smile. Sensing my disappointment, Artie put his hand on my shoulder and encouraged, “Seize the chance and you can shine too. Believe in yourself!” His words giving me a burst of confidence, I nodded admittedly, determined to be the best understudy. In the following days, I spent hours every day rehearsing my lines, perfecting my expressions and practicing each act. Gradually, I grew more confident and was fully prepared for the possibility of stepping onto the stage if needed.
On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come. Panic filled the air backstage. Calm outside but nervous inside, I took a deep breath and stepped forward. All those days of hard work and preparation had led to this moment. As the curtains rose, I walked onto the stage with a newfound courage. The lights shone on me, and I delivered my lines with full of passion and confidence. With the music fading away, the audience broke into thunderous applause. At that very moment, I knew I had fulfilled my mission as an understudy. That day, I became the star of the show, proving to myself and everyone that chances are for those who are prepared.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off. Without hesitation, we grabbed our bikes and quickly calculated the time it would take to beat the boat to Macon. It would be close, but if we rode fast enough, we just might make it. Gabriel and I jumped on our bikes and started pedaling as hard as we could. The wind blew against our faces as we raced along the river’s edge, the boat visible in the distance. The road was narrow and uneven at times, but we pushed forward, determined to return the girl’s bag. With each passing minute, my legs burned, but I couldn’t give up.
We finally got to Macon, thinking we’d failed, when Gabriel suddenly shouted, “I see them!” I saw Gabriel waiting by the dock, a triumphant grin on his face. The boat had just arrived, and the girl was joyfully holding her shopping bag, waving to us in gratitude. My cousin Gabriel and I were very happy. We not only helped others, but also surpassed ourselves. The sunshine was bright, and our mood was also bright.

【答案】
“Mom and Dad, I have good news to share!” Jack burst into the living room, his face glowing with excitement. “I got a B+ in the exam!” His parents exchanged surprised glances, and their disbelief was evident. “How could that be?” His dad asked, frowning. “You’ve never done that well before.” Reflecting on his efforts during countless days and nights,Jack felt kind of hurt but quickly continued in defense of himself. “I’ve been studying really hard, Mom and Dad. I promise, I didn’t cheat.”
Jack phoned Ms. Green, hoping she could remove his parents’ doubts. “Ms. Green, my parents are skeptical about my B+ grade. Could you please talk to them? They don’t believe I could have improved so much on my own.” Ms. Green assured Jack that she would have a heart-to-heart talk with his parents, emphasizing his hard work and dedication. After several days, when he saw the delicious meal that his parents had prepared for him to express their apology, nothing could express his delight.

【答案】
I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. With a trembling voice, I showed them the money and confessed everything that had happened. They listened quietly, their expressions shifting from shock to concern. "We can't keep this, it should be returned," my mom said firmly. My dad nodded in agreement. I felt a pang of disappointment but also a sense of relief. I knew they were right, and I was proud of myself for making the honest choice.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find out the family’s telephone number. The next day, my parents and I drove to the address provided. When we arrived, we were greeted by an elderly man who seemed confused at first. But as we explained the situation, he hugged us, thanking us repeatedly for our honesty. He insisted on giving me a small reward, a beautiful charm bracelet that had belonged to his mother. It was a symbol of his gratitude and a reminder of the importance of integrity. As we left, I felt a sense of accomplishment and joy that surpassed any material gift, knowing that I had done the right thing.

【答案】范文
From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. Each day at school, I navigated the hallways with a new route, avoiding the places he frequented. The shared excitement that once connected us was replaced by a painful silence. Alex tried to do something to mend it. One day, he even left me a note, trying to comfort me. But I looked at him coldly, “Leave me alone.” I knew I was hurting him, but the sting of rejection was too fresh, and I couldn’t find the words to bridge the gap.
Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. She reminded me that success and failure were parts of life’s journey. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. It suddenly struck me that how unfairly I treated Alex. Seized by guilt, I followed mom’s advice and left Alex a note, expressing my feelings—not as an apology, but as a step towards healing and rebuilding our bond. It was time to face my fears and embrace the reality that our friendship could weather this storm.

【答案】
I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had provided brightness during my dark days. Now it was time to help them in return. I cut a piece of hardware cloth, forming it into the shape of a nest and then securing the ends. I then hammered it into the wall next to the rubber tree. After I had finished all the work, there was only an hour before the doves usually made their visit. Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. Hearing my son’s excited voice, which was as clear as a bell, I looked up. There they were-swooping and circling near the nest, trying to add some twigs to their new home. A few weeks later, three babies broke free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp,” Matthew sang. I held him in my arms and kissed him, enjoying the happiness of the moment. Looking at their flittering shadows and hearing them chirp, I felt the dim grayness within my heart disappeared, replaced by the strength of life.

Mommy’s not moving!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear. Mrs. Smith, ever the composed neighbor, followed Hill without delay, immediately recognizing the urgency of the situation. Upon entering Jennifer’s home, Mrs. Smith found her on the floor, seizing. “Call 911, Hill, and stay on the line,” she instructed, her voice steady as she began first aid. Hill, though scared, managed to relay the emergency to the operator, her mother’s lifeline.
Jennifer finally came to herself in the hospital. The sterile environment formed a stark contrast to the warmth of her kitchen. As she regained consciousness, she saw Hill’s tearful face and Mrs. Smith’s comforting presence. The relief was palpable; she knew her quick-thinking daughter and reliable neighbor had saved her life, reinforcing the bond of their little family and the community that supported them.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I picked up the directions, wondering what had gone wrong. It was then that I realized I had forgotten to add the flour! The batter had been too runny, causing the cookies to spread out. I quickly mixed in the flour and spooned the batter onto a new cookie sheet. This time, I watched carefully as they rose and browned in the oven. The sweet aroma filled the kitchen, and my heart beat with excitement. I couldn’t wait to show my family what I had accomplished. Caleb sneaked in and raised his eyebrows, but this time, I just smiled confidently.
I brought a plate of cookies into the living room for my parents. They looked surprised and delighted. “These are…yours?” Mom asked, taking a cautious bite. “They’re…amazing!” She smiled, and Dad nodded in agreement. Caleb sat on the couch, a cookie in his hand, and his face betrayed a hint of pride. “I told you she could do it,” he said with a grin. I beamed, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over me. I had proved myself, not just to my family but to myself. From that day on, no one doubted my baking skills again.
