New Year Painting
Lunar New Year woodblock painting was a popular folk art in areas along the grand waterway. These paintings are bright and lively, and mainly use the color red, which is considered to suit both festivals and happy events.Patterns are closely related to the life and livelihood of Chinese people.Paintings from Tianjin, Shandong and Jiangsu are the most popular.

A small bowl bought at a yard sale in Connecticut for just $35 has been identified as a rare 15th-century Chinese antique.
The blue-and-white bowl was made by China's royal court during the Ming Dynasty. It is now expected to sell for up to $500,000, according to Sotheby's auction(拍卖) house in New York, where the auction will take place next month.
The purchase was made last year near New Haven, Connecticut.“I was just hanging around there aimlessly. But when I saw this bowl, I didn't even bargain over the $35 asking price,” the owner said.Shortly after the purchase, he sent photos of the bowl to auction specialists, who identified it as an item of historical significance.
Upon closer inspection, the artifact was found to have originated from the period of the Yongle Emperor, who ruled from 1402 to 1424—a period noted for its distinctive porcelain(瓷器) techniques. It's now valued between $300,000 and $500,000, with the top estimate nearly 14,300 times the amount it was purchased for.
“I was deeply attracted by the techniques. You can see why this bowl is so highly-valued from the very smooth porcelain body, silky glaze(釉料) and special blue colouring, which were never reproduced in later dynasties.” McAteer, an auction specialist, said.
“The Yongle Emperor improved the porcelain techniques and elevated the importance of porcelain from being an ordinary bowl into a true work of art. This small bowl has both practical and artistic value,” McAteer said.

During the “golden week” national holiday that began on October 1st, hundreds of thousands of sightseers flocked to Lijiang, a picturesque historic town in the south-western province of Yunnan.Among its attractions are the symbols printed beneath the Chinese characters on road signs and shop fronts. They are Dongba pictographs, an ancient form of script(字母系统) that originated among the Naxi, a local ethnic group. It was almost extinct until about a decade ago, when local officials began to realize its value and covered the town with it.
Dongba pictographs were never widely used by the Naxi people, of whom there are about 300,000 living in the Himalayan foothills near Lijiang, as well as in Tibet and Sichuan Province. The Dongba pictographs, which evolved as early as the seventh century, are used by local wise men, researchers and artists.
There are thousands of records about the Naxi ethnic group. They provide rich insight into how the Naxi people thought about war, geography, astronomy and agriculture. But they are extremely hard to read.Linguists are helped by the area's wise men. There are about 600 wise men, most of whom are very old, including Yang Guoxing, who ran a school from 2010 to 2015 to teach Dongba pictographs to children living in the mountains. When Mr.Yang was growing up, “everyone was too busy farming” to learn them. Now they are all busy soaking up the pop culture, he says.
Signs at bus stations in rural Yunnan encourage locals to use written and spoken Chinese. But the Naxi is left behind compared with other ethnic minorities.Primary schools in Lijiang teach the Dongba script twice a week, as well as Naxi nursery rhymes.Li Dejing, head of the Dongba Culture Research Institute, says this is not just about keeping the pictographs alive, but also about letting children grasp “the very spirit of their own culture”.And this will also help tourism to develop in Lijiang.
