B Sitting in the garden for my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of my science career. So I was shocked when Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was  shocked and overjoyed when she invited me to talk about projects I could do in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all. I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue. When I applied to graduate school, I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about. Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them. 24.How did the author feel when reading the email? A.anxious B.angry C.surprised D.happy 25.After talking with Professor Devon, the author decided to ________. A.criticize the review process B.stay longer in the Sahara Desert C.apply to the original project again D.put his heart and soul into the lab work 26.According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________. A.demanding B.inspiring C.misleading D.amusing 27.What can we learn from this passage? A.An invitation is a reputation. B.An innovation is a resolution. C.A rejection can be a redirection. D.A reflection can be a restriction. C Following its move into podcasting (播客) two years ago, streaming platform Spotify started an audiobook (有声书) business. Though it has yet to start making its own recordings, last autumn it made a deal for 200,000 audiobooks to be available to its VIP users. Not to be beaten, Amazon-owned Audible, which had been used to being the market leader, upped its game, hiring Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes to record multi-voice versions (版本 ) of Dickens’ novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, and announcing last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, voiced by more than 100 actors and featuring a “groundbreaking new soundscape”. Dramatised audiobooks are not an entirely new phenomenon. The use of multiple voices made them accessible to readers who might not have had the patience for the written versions. For example, George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which surrounded the dead son of Abraham Lincoln with a group of spirit voices, became a great game of “spot the big name”. Even single-voice readings can significantly change literature in which style is at the heart. Lucy Ellmann’s hit Ducks, Newburyport, is a case in point: a thousand-page stream of an Ohio woman’s thoughts, written in a single sentence. It unfolds on audio as a 45-hour monologue (独白), which is not the same thing at all, if only because an actor needs to breathe. To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are not as good as printed texts, as brain scans (扫描) have shown that they excite the same parts of the brain. Additionally, listening to stories makes hearts beat stronger than watching them, according to a latest study. For people with dyslexia (阅读障碍), they can even be a lifeline — as they can be for those who do not have time for, or the habit of, reading books. So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their printed versions — both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre-produced images too often do all the work for us — we should also recognize that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both. 28.What strategy did Audible use to maintain its market leader position? A.Creating its own prize-winning audiobook content. B.Focusing on single-voice audiobook productions. C.Offering low-priced audiobooks to its new customers. D.Inviting a well-known director to record classic novels. 29.How does the author present the effects of different versions of audiobooks? A.By giving examples. B.By sharing readers’ experiences. C.By presenting data. D.By referring to experts’ words. 30.What is the purpose of the last but one paragraph? A.To show the advantages of audiobooks. B.To compare audiobooks with printed texts. C.To inform readers of findings about audiobooks. D.To stress audiobooks’ value in treating dyslexia. 31.What is the author’s view on the future of audiobooks and printed texts? A.It depends on the choices of readers. B.Both of them hold the future of reading. C.Audiobook popularity is not expected to last. D.Audiobooks will eventually replace printed texts. D The idea of using a public bathroom with see-through walls may sound like a nightmare. But a famous Japanese architect is hoping to change that view, using new technology to make restrooms in Tokyo parks more appealing. “There are two things we worry about when entering a public restroom, especially those located at a park,” according to architect Shigeru Ban’s firm. “The first is cleanliness, and the second is whether anyone is inside.” The newly-invented transparent walls can turn off both of those worries, Ban says, by showing people what waits for them inside. After users enter the restroom and lock the door, the room’s walls turn a powdery pastel (彩色蜡笔的,柔和的) shade — and are no longer see-through. Ban’s transparent facilities are sure to make for great conversation among visitors to the park — and they’ll stand out even more after dark. “At night, the facility lights up the park like a beautiful lantern,” the architect’s website says. The group is behind the Tokyo Toilet project, enlisting (招募) world-famous architects to create toilets “like you’ve never seen.” The project’s eye-catching toilets are part of a plan to put people at ease when visiting a public bathroom. The project may seem silly, but the 16 architects who are reimagining public toilets are some of the brightest names in Japanese architecture. The list includes four Pritzker Prize winners — Ban, Toyo Ito, Tadao Ando and Fumihiko Maki — along with international stars such as Kengo Kuma and Sou Fujimoto. The fashion designer Nigo is also contributing. Ban’s colorful public bathrooms opened to the public this month in two parks: Yoyogi Fukamachi Mini Park and Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park. Others will be opening in coming months. 32.Why are people often worried before entering a public restroom? A.It’s not always clean. B.It’s usually at a huge distance. C.Its lock is usually useless. D.It’s always occupied. 33.What does the underlined word “transparent” mean in the third paragraph? A.Full of bright colors. B.Not easy to see through. C.Easy to see through. D.Thick and strong. 34.What do we know about the project from the last two paragraphs? A.It’s impractical and silly. B.It’s rewarding and famous. C.It has won the Pritzker Prize. D.It’s the fruit of collective wisdom. 35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Should the public restrooms be upgraded? B.The new high-tech walls of public restrooms are coming. C.How do we live with see-through public facilities? D.Some famous architects designed a silly project. Electronic waste (also known as e-waste) is discarded (丢弃的) electronic devices. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). 故选A。 25. 根据第二段“So I was shocked when Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was shocked and overjoyed when she invited me to talk about projects I could do in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all. 根据第三段“I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue. 根据最后一段“Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them. C。 C Following its move into podcasting (播客) two years ago, streaming platform Spotify started an audiobook (有声书) business. 根据文章第二段“Not to be beaten, Amazon-owned Audible, which had been used to being the market leader, upped its game, hiring Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes to record multi-voice versions (版本 ) of Dickens’ novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, and announcing last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, voiced by more than 100 actors and featuring a “groundbreaking new soundscape”.(亚马逊旗下的Audible公司也不甘被打败,它一直以来都是市场的领导者。 根据文章第三段“For example, George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which surrounded the dead son of Abraham Lincoln with a group of spirit voices, became a great game of “spot the big name”.(例如,乔治·桑德斯的《林肯在中阴界》中,亚伯拉罕·林肯死去的儿子被一群灵魂的声音包围,成为一个伟大的“发现大人物”的游戏)”及第四段“Lucy Ellmann’s hit Ducks, Newburyport, is a case in point: a thousand-page stream of an Ohio woman’s thoughts, written in a single sentence. It unfolds on audio as a 45-hour monologue (独白), which is not the same thing at all, if only because an actor needs to breathe.(露西·埃尔曼的热门作品《鸭子,纽伯里波特》就是一个很好的例子:一个俄亥俄女人用一句话写了一千页的思想流。 故选A。 30. 根据文章倒数第二段“To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are not as good as printed texts, as brain scans (扫描) have shown that they excite the same parts of the brain. Additionally, listening to stories makes hearts beat stronger than watching them, according to a latest study. For people with dyslexia (阅读障碍), they can even be a lifeline — as they can be for those who do not have time for, or the habit of, reading books.(说音频版本不同并不意味着它们不如印刷文本好,因为脑部扫描显示,它们刺激的是大脑的相同部分。 故选A。 31. 根据文章最后一段“So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their printed versions — both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre-produced images too often do all the work for us — we should also recognize that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.(因此,当我们庆祝有声书与纸质书的共同之处时——两者都能让大脑在一个预先制作的图像经常为我们做所有工作的世界里创造自己的图像——我们也应该认识到,它们被翻译成一种不同的媒介,即使是作者自己读的。 B。 D The idea of using a public bathroom with see-through walls may sound like a nightmare. 根据第二段中的“There are two things we worry about when entering a public restroom, especially those located at a park. The first is cleanliness, and the second is whether anyone is inside.(进入公共卫生间时,尤其是公园内的卫生间,我们有两件事担心。 故选A项。 33. 根据第三段中的“The newly-invented transparent walls can turn off both of those worries, Ban says, by showing people what waits for them inside. After users enter the restroom and lock the door, the room’s walls turn a powdery pastel shade — and are no longer see-through.(Ban说,新发明的transparent墙可以通过向人们展示里面的情况来消除这两种担忧。 根据第五段中的“The group is behind the Tokyo Toilet project, enlisting (招募) world-famous architects to create toilets “like you’ve never seen.” The project’s eye-catching toilets are part of a plan to put people at ease when visiting a public bathroom. The project may seem silly, but the 16 architects who are reimagining public toilets are some of the brightest names in Japanese architecture. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The idea of using a public bathroom with see-through walls may sound like a nightmare. But a famous Japanese architect is hoping to change that view, using new technology to make restrooms in Tokyo parks more appealing.(使用带有透明墙的公共卫生间的想法可能听起来像一场噩梦。 The newly-invented transparent walls can turn off both of those worries, Ban says, by showing people what waits for them inside. The newly - invented transparent walls can turn off both of those worries,The newly - invented transparent walls是主语,其中newly - invented是复合形容词修饰walls;can turn off是谓语,both of those worries是宾语;by showing people what waits for them inside是方式状语,其中what waits for them inside是宾语从句,作showing的宾语。 The project may seem silly, but the 16 architects who are reimagining public toilets are some of the brightest names in Japanese architecture. The project may seem silly是主系表结构,The project是主语,may seem是系动词,silly是表语;后一个分句中the 16 architects是主语,are是系动词,some of the brightest names in Japanese architecture是表语,who are reimagining public toilets是定语从句,修饰先行词the 16 architects。 Electronic waste (also known as e-waste) is discarded (丢弃的) electronic devices. The doctor said he had seriously broken his leg and would stay at hospital for several weeks. When Tad went to visit him in the hospital, Charley was in a low mood, unwilling to talk to others. When Charley got out of the hospital, Tad visited him a few times, chatting and playing video games with him, but things just were not the same. Charley was still in low spirits. Meanwhile, Tad made friends at school, boys who enjoyed the things he and Charley used to do. Still, he felt sad and guilty for not spending more time with Charley. He wanted to help and be the same good friend like before, but it was hard. Charley came back to middle school in the fall, but he had a tough time. Tad helped him get to class on time by pushing his wheelchair, but sometimes, Charley had to find someone else if Tad was at ball practice, or he would be late. One day Charley dropped his book. As he tried to lean(倾斜) down and pick it up, he fell out of his wheelchair. Tad and one of his classmates helped him back into his chair. Charley wasn’t hurt, but he was so embarrassed that he didn’t speak to anyone the rest of the day. Another time, Charley tried to get through the gym door, but it closed on him. When john's mother knew about this, SHE became very angry. SHE wanted the ad master to tell her why the school punk shed her son for kissing another six year old girl. The girl asked him to kiss her, and he did this only to show friendship. What's wrong with this? He said, the headmaster thought that I was wrong of a boy to kiss the girl, even though they were only six years old. IT is stated clearly in the student handbook. IT is unwelcome behavior, the headmaster said.
