It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last choice; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “green hand like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the gun.
Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
I stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with Julia, Ian and the other scientists on board, trying to solve a big puzzle of our observations. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons why I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards!

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75 percent.
So serious is this issue that many environmentalists show their concern and try to figure out the main reasons behind it. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters preferred big trees. Housing development encroached on the woods. Heavy wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But a study of California forests also documented a widespread death of big trees that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last choice; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “green hand like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the gun.
Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
I stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with Julia, Ian and the other scientists on board, trying to solve a big puzzle of our observations. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons why I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards!

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75 percent.
So serious is this issue that many environmentalists show their concern and try to figure out the main reasons behind it. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters preferred big trees. Housing development encroached on the woods. Heavy wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But a study of California forests also documented a widespread death of big trees that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress by calculating how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into consideration such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness (潮湿) of soil and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
“Since the 1930s”, McIntyre said, “the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. A new study in the journal Scientific Reports finds AI chatbots can imitate famous poets so effectively that they can fool many human readers, and non-experts often can’t reliably distinguish between poems written by William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot or ChatGPT-3.5.
The researchers conducted two experiments: the first asked participants to determine whether a poem was written by a human or AI, and the second assessed the quality of the poems. In both cases, the AI-generated poems either passed as human-written or even outperformed those by human writers. Participants, who were unaware of the true origins of the poems, rated the AI-generated poems higher on average, considering them more inspiring, meaningful, moving, and profound than the human-authored ones.
So, how did this happen? Researchers believe the appeal of AI-generated poems lies in their simplicity and clarity. These poems better convey an image, mood, emotion, or theme to non-expert poetry readers. Consequently, participants might have misunderstood the complexity of human poetry as AI incoherence (不连贯性). Understanding human-authored poetry also requires deep and critical thinking. However, modern readers seem unwilling to engage in this kind of mental labor, preferring texts that offer “instant answers,” writes Andrew Dean, a literary scholar at Deakin University in Australia.
Michele Elam, a senior fellow at Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, raised a key concern about how AI may shape people’s relationships with art. It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last choice; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “green hand like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the gun.
Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
I stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with Julia, Ian and the other scientists on board, trying to solve a big puzzle of our observations. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons why I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards!

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75 percent.
So serious is this issue that many environmentalists show their concern and try to figure out the main reasons behind it. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters preferred big trees. Housing development encroached on the woods. Heavy wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But a study of California forests also documented a widespread death of big trees that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress by calculating how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into consideration such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness (潮湿) of soil and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
“Since the 1930s”, McIntyre said, “the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. A new study in the journal Scientific Reports finds AI chatbots can imitate famous poets so effectively that they can fool many human readers, and non-experts often can’t reliably distinguish between poems written by William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot or ChatGPT-3.5.
The researchers conducted two experiments: the first asked participants to determine whether a poem was written by a human or AI, and the second assessed the quality of the poems. In both cases, the AI-generated poems either passed as human-written or even outperformed those by human writers. Participants, who were unaware of the true origins of the poems, rated the AI-generated poems higher on average, considering them more inspiring, meaningful, moving, and profound than the human-authored ones.
So, how did this happen? Researchers believe the appeal of AI-generated poems lies in their simplicity and clarity. These poems better convey an image, mood, emotion, or theme to non-expert poetry readers. Consequently, participants might have misunderstood the complexity of human poetry as AI incoherence (不连贯性). Understanding human-authored poetry also requires deep and critical thinking. However, modern readers seem unwilling to engage in this kind of mental labor, preferring texts that offer “instant answers,” writes Andrew Dean, a literary scholar at Deakin University in Australia.
Michele Elam, a senior fellow at Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, raised a key concern about how AI may shape people’s relationships with art.
