Inspiring① Travel Stories with Locals Around the World
A common theme② I hear from travellers is how busy and stressful③ travelling can be. It seems we get so caught up④ in seeing the highlights of the city that we often forget to slow down and enjoy life outside of the top-ten lists The following stories are positive⑤ encounters (相遇) with , which are quite inspiring, regardless of (不管) whether it's a trip abroad⑥ or one closer to home!
While in Vietnam in 2017, my husband and I a stay at a guesthouse (小宾馆) in the beach town of Nah Trang. We thought we were the only people at this guesthouse until we met Felix, a German firefighter⑦ from Cologne. He was on holiday in Vietnam for a month and the three of us really hit it off (一见如故), talking for hours and enjoying each other's .
We invited Felix to join us while we went to a couple of⑧ different areas in Vietnam and he came, a great addition⑨. At the end of the trip, Felix invited us to visit him in Cologne, Germany and we took him up on the offer
I'd never been to Cologne, I'd watched an Anthony Bourdain episode (一集) where he gushed (称赞) over the kölsch beer and schweinshaxe (德国烤猪脚), but that was all I knew.
Felix really pulled out all the stops for us. We spent three days in town with him and he drove us out into the countryside to show us the village he'd grown up in. We got a personal tour⑪ of the firehouse (消防站) he worked in, including a chance to try on fire suits. He took us to his favorite beer halls and introduced us to his friends. In the spirit of travel and new friends, we drank and drank our weight in beer.
Thanks to Felix, we got a real insider's look at Cologne, a place that will always be special for that reason. We're still friends with him and are currently trying to get him to come to visit us in New York City.
Another trip to Madagascar can be counted as⑫ one of the best trips I have ever done. For the beautiful beaches of the west coast. For the hundreds of giant⑬ baobabs For the great company of my travel-friend. But also, and probably⑭ mostly, for the company of Coco, our local driver.
He picked us up⑮ in Tulear and drove all the way north to Antananarivo, following the west coast of Madagascar. Well, he did not reach the capital, but that's coming later in the story.
I firstly have to commend (表扬) him for his driving skills. The sandy tracks⑯ of that part of the island are very tricky (棘手的) and junctions (路口) are very difficult to recognize. It was great to have Coco leading us so that we could spend our time enjoying all the baobabs. But the best thing about Coco was his sweet attempts⑰ to make us at ease (自在). With his poor French, he tried to explain to us everything about Madagascar and the Malagasy people. We ended up⑱ inviting him for every lunch, on condition that (条件是) he could take us to have some good local food and we could meet local people. We had many experiences together, including nine tire changes (换轮胎)!
Finally, it was time to say goodbye. Once back at home, I managed to⑲ call him to say hello and he thanked us so much for all the help. We are now planning a second trip to Madagascar, this time on the south coast of Tulear. But one thing will remain the same: we will ask Coco to be our driver again!
Looking back, I am grateful for⑳ the wonderful interactions along my trip, which enables me to know more lovely and passionate (热情的) people from all over the world.

费利克斯真的为我们⑪ 倾尽全力 (pulled out all the stops)。

(2025·全国一卷·阅读理解C篇) While safety improvements might have been made to our streets in recent years, transport studies also show declines in pedestrian (行人) mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there’s too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school, so they pack them into the car instead.
Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives, they call for a rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.
Life on city streets started to change decades ago. Whole neighbourhoods were destroyed to make way for new road networks and kids had to play elsewhere. Some communities fought back. Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the destruction of her local park. Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor (市长) to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.
Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.
We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. Do we really recognise what it costs us as a society when children can’t move safely around our communities? The authors of Movement have it right: it’s time to think differently about that street outside your front door.
28.What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A.Cars often get stuck on the road. B.Traffic accidents occur frequently.
C.People walk less and drive more. D.Pedestrians fail to follow the rules.
29.What were the Canadian journalist and other campaigners trying to do?
A.Keep their cities livable. B.Promote cultural diversity.
C.Help the needy families. D.Make expressways accessible.
30.What can be inferred about the campaigns in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s?
A.They boosted the sales of cars. B.They turned out largely ineffective.
C.They won government support. D.They advocated building new parks.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why the Rush? B.What’s Next?
C.Where to Stay? D.Who to Blame?
(1) 提出问题、分析问题、解决问题;

Passage 1
After his father was rushed to hospital for an operation, 18-year-old Yanatha Desouvre began to panic. So he did the one thing he knew would calm himself down — writing.
“I’m so scared,” he started. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose my dad.” Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks writing about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad — the jokes they’d shared, the basketball games they’d watched and so on. Sometimes Desouvre cried as he wrote. Often he laughed. “Writing allowed me to face my fear and my pen was a tool to reduce the pain,” says Desouvre.
He is not alone. A lot of research shows benefits of writing about a painful experience or difficult situation in a manner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing”. They say it can strengthen the immune (免疫) system, help reduce pain, and improve the mood, sleep and memory.
When asked about his first writing, Desouvre says it was when he was 12, he survived a car crash in Brooklyn. After it he had nightmares about it over the years, he started writing about it, and then kept going. It helped. He says, “You can’t keep things bottled up, and it will make you sick.”
Now he thinks of his expressive writing as a recording of what happened and what he’s learned. He always starts with “the tough stuff ” and then writes about how he’s grown from the experience. Last year, he wrote in a notebook, recording the stress of his study. But he’s also written about what he has gained: being stronger. “My expressive writing gave me the courage to face my fears,” Desouvre says. “And I believe it has helped me discover the hope I need to heal.”

Passage 3
(24-25高一上·广西·开学考试)Women usually live longer than men, but they also get sick more often. New research from the University of Georgia shows that eating a good diet with lots of colorful fruits and vegetables can help women stay healthier. These foods have something called carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), which are good for our eyes and brains.
The study looked at many past studies and found that women get more health problems than men. These problems include diseases where the body fights itself and memory loss. Women are more likely to get these diseases because of their biology. “Women have more body fat than men, which is good for having babies, but it also means they need to eat more healthy things to stay well,” said Hammond, a researcher.
Why are women more vulnerable (脆弱的) to health problems? One reason is how they store vitamins (维生素) and minerals. Women’s bodies keep more fat, and fat can hold these important nutrients (营养物). This is helpful when they are having babies, but it also means there might not be enough for their eyes and brains.
Eating foods with carotenoids is important because they help protect our bodies from damage. Some carotenoids are found in parts of our eyes and brains and can help with problems in the nervous system. “Both men and women eat these foods, but women need more because their bodies use them up faster,” said Hammond.
The food we eat can affect our brains and how we feel. It can even change our feelings and how likely we are to get angry. Now, scientists are learning that the food we eat also affects the bacteria (细菌) in our stomachs, which are important to our health too.
1.What does the study suggest about carotenoids?
A.They are only beneficial to men.
B.They are not necessary for a healthy diet.
C.They are good for women’s eyes and brains.
D.They have no effect on the central nervous system.
2.What is one of the reasons women may need a better diet?
A.Women need less food than men.
B.Women’s diets are short of carbohydrates.
C.Women need more vitamins to support their body fat.
D.Women have a higher risk of developing health problems.
3.What is the connection between diet and the bacteria in our stomachs?
A.Certain bacteria can only be found in women’s stomachs.
B.The bacteria in our stomachs have nothing to do with our health.
C.The bacteria in our stomachs determine our food preferences.
D.The food we eat affects the bacteria in our stomachs.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Why do women live longer than men?
B.Why do women lose more memory?
C.Women may have a higher risk of mental illness
D.Diets with more carotenoids can help women stay healthier
Passage 4
How to deal with your nervousness before exams? 1 Here are some dos and don’ts that might help you with your exams.
Don’t arrive too early.
2 When you’re revising with friends, you might get more anxious. Instead, try to get there five to ten minutes earlier and keep yourself from talking about the exam to anybody.
Do sleep well.
Lack of sleep is a huge factor in increasing your nervousness. 3 Also, you will have a harder time concentrating. So, instead of studying deep into the night, you should work on getting a regular sleep pattern.
4
If you’ve worked hard, and you are ready, you don’t need this. Going over notes on the day of the exam might make you feel like you’ve missed out on some topics. So you had better just be rested and relaxed for the exam and do the best that you can.
Do eat well.
Don’t forget to have a good meal. We tend to forget to eat when we’re too anxious, but eating is necessary. Your brain needs sugar to work properly. You have to eat something before taking an exam. 5
Don’t think about the result of the exam.
Before and during an exam, don’t think about the result. Stay focused on the present. You should not think about your grades, your chances of getting into college, and your family’s opinion, etc. Try to separate yourself from anything else.
A.Don’t revise on the day of the exam.
B.How to revise better to get a good grade?
C.Don’t make your revision go on for too long.
D.How to prepare yourself better for the coming exam?
E.It will give you more energy and lower your anxiety level.
F.When your nervous system is not rested, you’ll feel more anxious.
G.You probably arrive early before an exam, but it’s not a good idea to get there too early.

【答案】28.C 29.A 30.B 31.A
根据文章第一段“While safety improvements might have been made to our streets in recent years, transport studies also show declines in pedestrian (行人) mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there’s too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school, so they pack them into the car instead.
根据文章第三段“Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the destruction of her local park. Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor (市长) to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” 故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly.
通读全文,并根据文章最后一段“We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. Do we really recognise what it costs us as a society when children can’t move safely around our communities? 故选A。
(1) 提出问题、分析问题、解决问题;

1.What happened to Desouvre when his father was sent to hospital?
A.He was so frightened that he did nothing.
B.He watched a basketball game with his father.
C.He called his mother to tell his father’s illness.
D.He recorded something to free himself from anxiety.
2.What benefit can a person get from expressive writing?
A.A moody state. B.A good manner.
C.A better memory. D.A pain-free life.
3.Why did Desouvre begin his first writing?
A.To recover from a traffic accident.
B.To become a famous writer.
C.To keep his secret of being sick.
D.To get rid of a terrible experience.
4.What does Desouvre regard expressive writing as?
A.A recording of gains and losses.
B.A willingness to become stronger.
C.A great tool to deal with difficult problems.
D.A good way to react properly to an accident.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.D 4.A

根据文章第二段“The study looked at many past studies and found that women get more health problems than men. These problems include diseases where the body fights itself and memory loss. Women are more likely to get these diseases because of their biology.(这项研究回顾了许多过去的研究,发现女性比男性更容易出现健康问题。

【答案】1.D 2.G 3.F 4.A 5.E
1.上文 “How to deal with anxiety before exams?(如何应对考试前的焦虑?)”引出话题,提到如何缓解考试焦虑;下文“Here are some dos and don’ts that might help you with your exams.(这里有一些注意事项,可能会对你的考试有所帮助)”说明下文会给出解决方法,D项(如何为即将到来的考试做更好的准备?)
2.根据本段小标题“Don’t arrive too early.(不要到得太早)”以及下文“Instead, try to get there five to ten minutes earlier and keep yourself from talking about the exam to anybody.(相反,尽量早到5到10分钟,不要和任何人谈论考试)”可知,本段主要讲的是不要在考试之前太早到考场。

根据“Going over notes on the day of the exam might make you feel like you've missed out on some topics. So you had better just be rested and relaxed for the exam and do the best that you can.(在考试当天复习笔记可能会让你觉得自己错过了一些主题。 A项(不要在考试当天复习)符合段意,其中的“revise on the day of the exam”与本段中的“Revising on the day of the exam”相呼应。故选A项。
5.根据该段小标题“Do eat well.(一定要吃好)”和设空处前一句“You have to eat something before taking an exam.(考试前你得吃点东西)”可知,本段讲的是在考试之前有必要吃点东西。
