Unit 3 Our Colorful School Life-Exploring the Topic-Thinking Skills
This section, "Thinking Skills" under "Exploring the Topic" of Unit 3, focuses on guiding students to connect their personal school life experiences with English language expression through thinking-oriented activities. It builds on the unit’s core theme of "colorful school life" and serves as a bridge between topic exploration and subsequent language output. The content mainly includes three interconnected parts: first, a warm-up activity that stimulates memory and association by asking students to recall school activities (e.g., classes, sports, clubs); second, a classification task where students sort school-related words/phrases (e.g., "math class", "basketball club", "art festival") into categories like "Academic Activities", "Sports Activities", and "Cultural Activities"; third, a critical thinking exercise that encourages students to compare different school activities, express preferences, and explain simple reasons (e.g., "I like the music club because I enjoy singing"). Throughout the section, visual aids such as pictures of school scenes, word cards, and simple charts are used to lower the language barrier and guide students to think logically, express clearly, and develop connections between language form and real-life meaning.

Presentation (15 minutes)
Main idea and details (Activity 1)
Show a picture of a school library on the PPT, and introduce the concept of main idea and details.
T: Class, look at this picture of the library. The main idea of this picture is about the school library. And the details can be the books on the shelves, the students reading, and the desks and chairs in it. Now, let's look at the main idea and detail chart. The main idea is at the top, and the details are below to support it.
Explain the chart to students, and then ask them to work in pairs to discuss and fill in some possible details about the library in the chart.
Using the main idea and detail chart (Activity 2)
Present a short passage about a school building to the students. Read the passage aloud first, and then ask students to read it carefully by themselves.
T: Listen to me read this passage about a school building first. Then you read it carefully and try to find the main idea and details.
After students finish reading, guide them to complete the main idea and detail chart according to the passage. Walk around the classroom to provide help if necessary.
Select some students to share their completed charts with the class and make comments.
Scanning (Activity 3 - part 1)
Write a few simple questions on the blackboard, such as "What time does the English club start?" "How many floors does the new building have?" Then show an English club poster on the PPT.
T: Class, here are some questions on the blackboard. Now, look at this English club poster. I want you to quickly find the answers to these questions from the poster. Remember, don't read every word carefully, just look for the relevant information.
Let students start scanning the poster to find the answers. After a while, ask students to raise their hands to answer the questions.
Practice (15 minutes)
Describing school facilities (Activity 3 - part 2)
Divide students into pairs. Each pair chooses a school facility, such as a playground, a garden, or a club. They need to draw a main idea and detail chart about the chosen facility and then describe it to their partners using the chart.
T: Now, work with your partner. Choose a school facility, draw a main idea and detail chart, and then describe it to your partner. You can use the words and phrases we learned today.
Walk around the classroom to monitor students' activities and give encouragement and guidance. After that, invite several pairs to come to the front of the class to share their descriptions.
Scanning practice (Activity 3 - part 3)
Provide each student with a short text about school activities and some related questions.
T: Here is a text about school activities and some questions. Use the scanning strategy we learned to quickly find the answers to the questions.
Students start to read the text and answer the questions. Check the answers together as a class, and ask students to explain how they used scanning to find the answers.
Summary (7 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this class with the students, including the vocabulary of school facilities, the method of identifying the main idea and details, and the scanning reading strategy.
T: Class, today we learned a lot. We learned new words about school facilities. We also learned how to find the main idea and details in a text and use a main idea and detail chart. Besides, we practiced the scanning reading strategy. Who can briefly review these for us?
Invite some students to summarize, and then give a more comprehensive summary.
Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about their favorite school facility, using a main idea and detail chart to organize their writing. They should include at least 5 sentences.
Homework Assignment (3 minutes)

教学反思
After this class, overall, most students showed great interest in the content, especially in the activities of identifying main ideas and details and scanning for information. However, there are still some aspects that need improvement.
Some students had difficulty accurately identifying the main idea when the text was a bit long and complex. In the future, more practice with different types of texts should be provided to help them better master this skill. Also, during the pair - work and group - work activities, a few students were less active. Teachers need to pay more attention to these students and encourage their participation.
The use of real - life pictures and examples in class was effective in helping students understand the knowledge. In the following teaching, more such teaching resources can be added to make the class more vivid and interesting. In terms of the scanning strategy, some students still need more practice to use it more flexibly. Specific guidance and more relevant exercises should be arranged in subsequent classes.
