The significance of the Panama Canal. 19. How long did it take the US to complete the Panama Canal? A. 10 years. B. 23 years. C. 33 years. 20. Why was the canal expanded in 2016? A. To connect more countries. B. To attract more commercial ships. C. To allow more ships to pass through. C 19. A 20. And the next part of this talk is on the Panama Canal. It’s amazing how this one small section of a small country can be so important to the world. The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway in the Central American country of Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. It is only 82 kilometres long. If you go around South America by ship, then you need to travel another 15,000 kilometres. So the canal saves a lot of travel time. It takes around 8 to 10 hours to cross the canal. The French started building the canal in 1881, but they couldn’t finish it. The project was started again in 1904 by the United States and the canal was finally finished in 1914. For the rest of the 20th century, the United States controlled the canal, but gave control back to Panama in 2000. Every year, around 40,000 ships come through the canal. These are mostly commercial ships. They transport goods for trade between Asia and America, or Europe. In 2016 the government of Panama made the canal bigger, so that now 99 per cent of ships can pass through it. Let’s now turn to the role of the Panama Canal in the global economy... A Portal Information for Current AARP Volunteers What is the Volunteer Portal? He had so much fun! The roller coaster was the Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida. Disney World is one of the only mainstream amusement parks that will let my son go on rides. He has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and is unable to sit independently. Because of his disabilities, most parks won’t let him go on their roller coasters. The experience at Disney was special for my son, but also special for the rest of my family of five. Splitting up (分开) is something we encounter daily. My son goes to a special school in a town 20 minutes from our home. There are almost no activities he can enjoy at our local parks and recreation program, and he spends a few afternoons a week in physical treatment. We also divide and conquer when we are out in public. Many buildings have an accessible entrance that is further away, so we split up to avoid dragging everyone around the back. The same goes for hunting for a vacant elevator in a big building or a busy mall. Accessible seating in theaters often only has room for one companion, so we sit in separate rows or further apart from one another. On occasion, an entire building or part of a building is just completely inaccessible, so we split up or pass on an activity we planned to enjoy because we literally can’t get everyone in the door. Many people assume that tending to my son’s day-to-day needs is the hardest part of being his caregiver. But finding resources and places that will include him is the real challenge. Disney World is one of the few, if not the only place, where everyone in my family feels equally important. Now that my son has successfully ridden his first roller coaster, I would love for him to go on the same types of rides at an amusement park in the local community, but I know it’s not an option. For now, anyway, I’m holding our recent experience close to my heart. 24. Why was the experience at Disney special for the author’s son? A. He was permitted to ride a roller coaster. B. It was his first trip to an amusement park. C. He was allowed to go on rides independently. D. It was his first vacation with his entire family. 25. Which of the following best describes Disney World? A. Romantic. B. Popular. C. Inclusive. D. Secure. 26. Why does the author mention theaters in the fifth paragraph? A To criticize the limited space of theaters. B. To stress the importance of theaters to the disabled. C. To complain about the lack of accessible seating in public. D. To illustrate accessibility barriers in public that separate her family. 27. What does the author find most difficult when caring for her son? A. Managing her son’s daily needs. B. Balancing her son and the rest of her family. C. Finding disability-friendly places and activities. D. Persuading his son to fit into the local community. A 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第一段“This spring break, my 12-year-old disabled son rode his first roller coaster. He had so much fun! (今年春假,我12岁的残疾儿子第一次坐过山车。他玩得很开心!)”以及第二段“Disney World is one of the only mainstream amusement parks that will let my son go on rides. He has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and is unable to sit independently. Because of his disabilities, most parks won’t let him go on their roller coasters. (迪士尼世界是少数几个允许我儿子乘坐游乐设施的主流游乐园之一。他患有脑瘫,无法独立坐稳。由于残疾,大多数游乐园都不让他坐过山车)”可知,作者儿子在迪士尼的经历之所以特别,是因为他被允许乘坐过山车,而这是在其他大多数游乐园无法实现的。故选A项。 根据第二段“Disney World is one of the only mainstream amusement parks that will let my son go on rides. He has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and is unable to sit independently. Because of his disabilities, most parks won’t let him go on their roller coasters. (迪士尼世界是少数几个允许我儿子乘坐游乐设施的主流游乐园之一。他患有脑瘫,无法独立坐稳。由于残疾,大多数游乐园都不让他坐过山车)”以及倒数第二段“Disney World is one of the few, if not the only place, where everyone in my family feels equally important. (迪士尼世界即使不是唯一,也是少数几个能让我们全家每个人都感到自己同等重要的地方)”可推断,迪士尼世界对残疾人士具有包容性,能够接纳不同身体状况的游客参与游乐活动。故选C项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“The experience at Disney was special for my son, but also special for the rest of my family of five. Splitting up (分开) is something we encounter daily. (在迪士尼的经历对我儿子来说很特别,对我们五口之家的其他成员来说也很特别。分离是我们每天都会遇到的事情)”可知,“家人分离”是作者一家日常面临的问题,后文通过列举“建筑物无障碍入口偏远导致分离”“寻找电梯时分离”等例子展开说明,第五段提到“ Accessible seating in theaters often only has room for one companion, so we sit in separate rows or further apart from one another. (剧院的无障碍座位通常只能容纳一名陪同人员,因此我们要么坐在不同排,要么彼此隔得更远。)”,这也是“家人分离”的具体场景之一,目的是举例说明公共场合中因无障碍设施问题导致作者一家不得不分离的障碍,核心是通过剧院的例子佐证家庭分离的困境。故选D项。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Many people assume that tending to my son’s day-to-day needs is the hardest part of being his caregiver. But finding resources and places that will include him is the real challenge. (很多人认为,照顾儿子的日常需求是作为看护者最困难的部分。但找到能接纳他的资源和场所才是真正的挑战)”可知,作者认为照顾儿子过程中最困难的是寻找对残疾人友好的场所和活动。故选C项。 C Forgetting things is a blessing, believe it or not. For proof, imagine a world where every detail you ever came across was carved indelibly in your mind. Every conversation you regret, every rejection you’ve ever felt, every time you stepped out with your zipper undone stands as clearly in your mind as what you had for breakfast last week as well as the moments that bring you the greatest joy. That is a world of utter chaos and suffering. We don’t need to stick to just our armchair-philosophizing, however. Thanks to the wonderful combinatory magic genetics pulls off at each birth, we’ve had a few individuals on Earth who are unable to forget anything. Solomon Shereshevsky, for instance, could memorize lists of arbitrary (任意的) numbers, words, and nonsense syllables with perfect recall, even decades later. At first glance, this sounds like a superpower. But Shereshevsky described it as exhausting, distracting, and emotionally unbearable. What most miss about forgetting is that it is not a design flaw (缺陷). It’s a feature. In fact, the ability to forget is fundamental to learning. It’s what gives us focus, highlights the signal through the noise, and lets the brain determine what matters most given the context we are in. Research suggests that forgetting is an active process involving brain regions like the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, which help us manage the inflow and outflow of information. Forgetting is not our memory failing on us as much as it is our memory being better used. And here is where we meet the concept of the forgetting curve (曲线). First described by Hermann Ebbinghaus in the late 19th century, the forgetting curve tracks how quickly we lose information over time without reinforcement (巩固). Within hours of learning something new, we begin to forget it. Rapidly at first, then more slowly over time. The key insight of those who have followed Ebbinghaus is that this curve is not fixed. On the contrary, it’s something we can reshape, a feature we can tune ourselves. 28. What does the underlined word “indelibly” in the first paragraph mean? A. Permanently. B. Violently. C. Chaotically. D. Effortlessly. 29. What did Shereshevsky think of his ability? A. A design flaw. B. A real blessing. C. A mental burden. D. A rare talent. 30. How does forgetting contribute to learning? A. It prevents the flow of information. B. It pushes people to review regularly. C. It activates brain regions responsible for learning. D. It allows the brain to prioritize important information. 31. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph? A. Keep learning new things. B. Intervene in the forgetting process. C. Accept forgetting as a natural part of life. D. Explore a fixed pattern of the forgetting curve. A 29. C 30. D 31. 根据划线词上文“Forgetting things is a blessing, believe it or not.(别不信,遗忘事物其实是一种福气)”提到能够遗忘是一件幸事,划线词所在句子以及下文是提供支撑性证据,论证“遗忘是一件幸事”这一观点;结合下文“Every conversation you regret, every rejection you’ve ever felt, every time you stepped out with your zipper undone stands as clearly in your mind as what you had for breakfast last week as well as the moments that bring you the greatest joy. That is a world of utter chaos and suffering.(每一次让你懊悔的交谈,每一次你所经历的被拒绝的时刻,每一次你未系好拉链就出门的举动,都清晰地印刻在你的脑海中,就如同你上周早餐吃了什么一样,也包括那些给你带来最大快乐的时刻。那是一个充满混乱与痛苦的世界)”可知,此处是作者让读者想象一个所有遇到的细节都无法遗忘的世界、一切都永远被刻在脑海里的世界,那将是充满混乱和痛苦的世界。故划线词indelibly意思是“永久地”。故选A项。 根据第二段“At first glance, this sounds like a superpower. But Shereshevsky described it as exhausting, distracting, and emotionally unbearable.(乍一看,这听起来像是某种超能力。但舍雷舍夫斯基却称其令人精疲力竭、分心不已,而且情绪上难以承受)”可知,谢雷舍夫斯基认为他的能力是一种精神负担。故选C项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“It’s what gives us focus, highlights the signal through the noise, and lets the brain determine what matters most given the context we are in.(正是它让我们能够集中注意力,帮助我们从杂乱的信息中提取出关键信息,并让大脑根据我们所处的环境来确定哪些才是最重要的)”可知,遗忘能让大脑优先处理重要的信息。 根据最后一段“On the contrary, it’s something we can reshape, a feature we can tune ourselves.(相反,这并非是无法改变的固定状态,而是我们能够加以调整、能够自行塑造的特性)”可知,作者建议读者参与遗忘过程。故选B项。 D Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. But as people increasingly turn to digital platforms in search of opportunity, Daniela Saban, an associate professor of operations, information, and technology at Stanford Graduate School of Business, says it’s time to take a critical look at the role of algorithms (算法). She explores how properly designed algorithms can improve the fairness and effectiveness of matching processes. Saban has focused much of her research on what she calls “matching markets,” and she’s been particularly fascinated by online dating. In one study, she and several coauthors partnered with a major U.S. dating platform to explore how updates to the app’s algorithm could improve outcomes for romantic hopefuls looking to spark new connections. Analyzing data from the app, Saban developed a model that not only prioritized potential matches based on a user’s preferences but also took into account the likelihood that the person on the other side of the potential match would be interested. “I not only want to show you people that you will like, I also want to show you people that will like you back,” Saban notes. Factoring in users’ history, activity levels, and this two-sided approach to preference led to a substantial increase in matches during field experiments in Texas. “Our algorithm increased the number of matches by 27% in Houston and by over 37% in Austin,” Saban says. Similarly, when working with the volunteer matching platform VolunteerMatch, Saban identified an imbalance in how volunteer opportunities were being distributed. Some organizations were receiving an overwhelming number of sign-ups, sometimes even more than they needed, while others struggled to attract any volunteers at all. By adjusting the search algorithm to consider the number of volunteers an organization needs and has already received, Saban and her team were able to ensure a more reasonable distribution of volunteers across opportunities. The technical details of algorithms may be complicated, but our commitment to fairness and equity doesn’t have to be. If we want algorithms to work for good, we need to make conscious choices about how we design them. 32. How do people search for opportunities nowadays? A. By learning algorithms. B. By making use of online tools. C. By developing critical thinking. D. By analyzing the matching processes. 33. What do we know about the model Saban developed for the dating app? A. It has attracted more users to the app. B. It makes a user’s preferences a top priority. C. It focuses on two-sided preference matching. D. It presents more potential matches to the users. 34. On what basis did Saban adjust the algorithm of VolunteerMatch? A. The preferences of the volunteers. B. The popularity of the organizations. C. A match between volunteer and organization types. D. A balance between the demand and supply of volunteers. 35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Power of Digital Matchmaking B. A New Era of Opportunity Searching C. Designing Algorithms for Better Matches D. Volunteering Better with Equal Distribution 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段“Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. But as people increasingly turn to digital platforms in search of opportunity, Daniela Saban, an associate professor of operations, information, and technology at Stanford Graduate School of Business, says it’s time to take a critical look at the role of algorithms (算法). (通过分析该应用程序的数据,Saban 开发了一个模型:它不仅会依据用户的偏好对潜在匹配对象进行优先级排序,还会考虑到潜在匹配对象的另一方是否可能对此感兴趣。Saban 指出:“我不仅想给你推荐你会喜欢的人,还想给你推荐也会喜欢你的人。”)”可知,Saban 为约会应用开发的模型核心在于兼顾双方的偏好,即注重双向偏好匹配。故选C项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Some organizations were receiving an overwhelming number of sign-ups, sometimes even more than they needed, while others struggled to attract any volunteers at all. By adjusting the search algorithm to consider the number of volunteers an organization needs and has already received, Saban and her team were able to ensure a more reasonable distribution of volunteers across opportunities. 根据第一段“Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. Are you feeling overwhelmed with too many tasks and not enough time? ____36____ After extensive research and trial of various techniques, I’ve pulled together a series of strategies that will help you take control of your days. We adopted Louis two years ago after he wandered into our house through the doggy door. We had a twelve-year-old dog named Sammy. He didn’t appreciate it when Louis lay on his bed and said so. But King Louis was unimpressed with Sammy’s protests and gave him a dismissive look. And that was that. Upon adopting our family, Louis made it clear that his principal bed fellow and confidant (知己) was to be Ayla, our daughter. They became inseparable. Besides sleeping with Ayla, Louis sat on her lap when she was eating dinner, watching TV, or doing her homework. He even insisted on riding in the car when she was being dropped off at school. But then something happened. As graduation from high school approached, congratulatory cards from friends and family poured in for Ayla, most of which contained money, primarily in twenty-dollar bills. Since Louis has a bad habit of eating things not intended for that purpose, he viewed the money as a treat meant for him. And he ate the twenty-dollar bills that Ayla left in a basket on the floor of her bedroom. About $200 worth. For his part, King Louis didn’t recognize the severity of what he had done and expected things to continue the way they had always been. But Ayla, who was so mad at Louis, did not share this view. From that decisive moment on, King Louis was banned from Ayla’s bedroom, her lap, and the car rides to school. King Louis couldn’t understand and sorrowful meows filled our home. And then, after three days, something strange happened. King Louis was playing in the backyard as usual but didn’t come back inside around noon. I became concerned and went searching for him. Nothing. Nowhere. Then my phone rang. It was Principal Leonard in Ayla’s school. He said there was a little situation in the school. I was there in minutes, and followed the principal to his office. Paragraph 1: I was astonished and relieved by what I saw. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: When we returned home, Ayla apologized to Louis for ignoring him. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: I was astonished and relieved by what I saw. There was my daughter, sitting on a couch, with King Louis curled in her lap, purring like a jet engine. With great excitement and pride, Ayla told me how Louis waltzed into the cafeteria like he owned the place, jumped on a table, and strode from one table to the next until he found her. Poor Louis. He must have been very upset because Ayla hadn’t been paying any attention to him, so he did the only thing he could think of: He came looking for her. And he must have known where Ayla was from all the times he rode along when I dropped her off at school. Paragraph 2: When we returned home, Ayla apologized to Louis for ignoring him. “I guess even kings make mistakes,” Ayla said with a laugh, and Louis purred in approval, his regal dignity restored. True to his nature, Louis wasted no time reclaiming his throne—Ayla’s lap—during dinner, and by bedtime, he was curled beside her as if the Great Twenty-Dollar Bill Incident had never happened. And, to Ayla’s great surprise, our family and friends were so moved by the story of King Louis that they re-contributed to Ayla’s graduation. But, this time, it was different. No twenties this time. Only hard plastic, King Louis-proof gift cards. 词汇激活 行为类 ①相处:curl in her lap/purr like a jet engine ②寻找:come looking for/waltz into/strode from one table to the next ③恢复:reclaiming his throne/curled beside her/regal dignity restored 情绪类 ①兴奋且自豪:excited and proud/thrilled and dignified ②赞同:approval/agreement 【点睛】【高分句型1】With great excitement and pride, Ayla told me how Louis waltzed into the cafeteria like he owned the place, jumped on a table, and strode from one table to the next until he found her. A. To criticize the limited space of theaters. C Forgetting things is a blessing, believe it or not. 29 What did Shereshevsky think of his ability? A. A design flaw. B. A real blessing. C. A mental burden. D. A rare talent. 30. How does forgetting contribute to learning? A. It prevents the flow of information. B. It pushes people to review regularly. C. It activates brain regions responsible for learning. D It allows the brain to prioritize important information. 31. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph? A. Keep learning new things. B. Intervene in the forgetting process. C Accept forgetting as a natural part of life. D. Explore a fixed pattern of the forgetting curve. D Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. C A match between volunteer and organization types. D. A balance between the demand and supply of volunteers. 35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Power of Digital Matchmaking B. A New Era of Opportunity Searching C. Designing Algorithms for Better Matches D.
