Unit 5 Green neighbourhood-B Green ideas (Speaking)

 

This lesson is from Unit 5 Green neighbourhood of Shanghai Education Edition (Five - Four Academic System, 2024) for Grade Six. The main topic of this unit is about environmental protection and green living. In this speaking part, students will focus on discussing green ideas. They will learn to express different ways to protect the environment, such as reducing waste, recycling materials, and saving energy. Through various speaking activities, students are expected to practice and improve their oral English skills, and at the same time, enhance their awareness of environmental protection.

教学过程

Warming - up (5 minutes)

Greet the students as usual.

Show some pictures of beautiful natural scenery and seriously polluted environments on the PPT. Then ask students: "What do you think of these pictures? Which environment do you like better? Why?" Encourage students to express their opinions freely. This activity can arouse students' interest in the topic of environmental protection and quickly lead them into the learning context.

Presentation (10 minutes)

Teach new vocabulary:

Write the new words on the blackboard one by one, such as "reduce", "reuse", "recycle", "save", etc. Read the words aloud with the students, and ask them to imitate the pronunciation. Then explain the meanings of these words through simple examples. For example, for "reduce", say "We can reduce waste by not buying unnecessary things." For "reuse", show a reused plastic bottle and say "We can reuse this plastic bottle to hold water." Let students repeat the examples to better understand the words.

Teach sentence patterns:

Present the key sentence patterns on the PPT, like "We can... to protect the environment." and "It's a good idea to...". Explain the structures and usage of these sentence patterns. Then give some examples: "We can plant more trees to protect the environment." "It's a good idea to turn off the lights when we leave the room." Ask students to make sentences using these patterns with the new words they just learned. Walk around the classroom to help and correct students' mistakes.

Practice (15 minutes)

Pair - work:

Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a set of pictures related to environmental protection, such as pictures of reducing waste, reusing things, recycling materials, and saving energy. Ask the students to talk about the pictures with their partners using the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learned. For example, one student says "Look at this picture. We can see a person using both sides of the paper. We can reduce waste by doing this." The other student responds "Yes, it's a good idea. And we can also recycle the used paper." Walk around the classroom to listen to their conversations and give necessary guidance and encouragement.
