Unit 2 Rules around us-C A rule story (Reading & Grammar in use) This part of the unit focuses on a rule story, which not only helps students improve their reading skills but also deepens their understanding of the importance of rules. Through reading the story, students will encounter various rules in different situations and learn how to express and understand them in English. The grammar in use section will further reinforce students' knowledge of grammar related to rules, such as modal verbs for expressing obligation and prohibition. 教学目标 Students will be able to understand the main idea and details of the rule story. Master new words and phrases related to rules, such as "obey", "disobey", "rule", "sign", "must", "mustn't", "should", "shouldn't", etc. Grasp the usage of modal verbs "must", "mustn't", "should", "shouldn't" to express rules. 教学重难点 A. Key Points The understanding of the rule story and the main idea it conveys. The correct usage of modal verbs "must", "mustn't", "should", "shouldn't" to express rules. New words and phrases related to rules. B. Difficult Points Differentiate the usage of "must" and "should", as well as "mustn't" and "shouldn't" in expressing rules. Apply the learned knowledge to real - life situations and create their own sentences about rules. A. New Words and Phrases obey /əˈbeɪ/v. to do what you are told to do by someone in authority or by a law 遵守 disobey /ˌdɪsəˈbeɪ/v. to refuse to do what you are told to do by someone in authority or by a law 不遵守 rule /ruːl/n. an official statement about what is allowed or not allowed in a particular situation, game, etc. 规则 sign /saɪn/n. a piece of paper, metal, or wood with words or a picture on it that gives people information, a warning, or an instruction 标志 traffic /ˈtræfɪk/n. the movement of vehicles, especially cars, buses, and trucks, along a road 交通 accident /ˈæksɪdənt/n. an unexpected event, especially one that causes damage or injury 事故 cross /krɒs/v. to go across something, from one side to the other 穿过 pavement /ˈpeɪvmənt/n. a hard surface, usually made of stone or concrete, for people to walk on, especially at the side of a road 人行道 B. Modal Verbs for Expressing Rules must Expresses a strong obligation. For example, "We must wear seat belts in the car." (It is necessary and important to do this.) The negative form "mustn't" expresses a strong prohibition. For example, "You mustn't play with fire." (It is not allowed at all.) should Expresses a mild obligation or advice. For example, "You should study hard for the exam." (It is a good thing to do.) The negative form "shouldn't" expresses that something is not a good idea. For example, "You shouldn't stay up late." (It is not advisable.) 教学过程 A. Warming - up (5 minutes) Greet the students and show some pictures of different public places, such as a park, a library, a school, etc. Ask students to think about and share some rules they know in these places. For example, "What rules do we have in the library?" Elicit answers like "We must keep quiet in the library." Write the answers on the blackboard. B. Pre - reading (10 minutes) Present some new words and phrases related to rules on the PPT. Teach the pronunciation, meaning and usage of these words and phrases through pictures, examples and body language. For the word "obey", show a picture of a student following the teacher's instructions and say "Look, the student is obeying the teacher's rules." For "mustn't", write a sentence on the blackboard "You mustn't run in the corridor." and explain that it means it is not allowed to run in the corridor. Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a set of cards with different rules written on them (some are correct and some are wrong). Ask them to discuss whether the rules are reasonable or not and correct the wrong ones. For example, one card says "You should play football in the classroom." Students should discuss and correct it to "You shouldn't play football in the classroom." C. While - reading (15 minutes) Skimming Show the title and the picture of the rule story on the PPT. Let students quickly skim the text to get the main idea. Then ask them to answer a general question, such as "What is the story mainly about?" Invite several students to share their answers. Guide them to summarize the main idea in a few sentences, like "The story is about a boy who didn't obey the traffic rules and had an accident." Scanning Ask students to scan the text again to find specific information. Give them some detailed questions, such as "What was the boy doing when he crossed the road?", "Did he look both ways before crossing the road?" etc. Have students raise their hands to answer the questions. Check the answers together and explain any difficult points in the text. Detailed Reading Read the text sentence by sentence with the students. Analyze the key sentences and grammar points. For example, when encountering the sentence "We must always follow the traffic rules.", explain the usage of "must" to express a strong obligation. Encourage students to ask questions if they don't understand something in the text. D. Grammar in use (10 minutes) Summarize the usage of modal verbs "must", "mustn't", "should", "shouldn't" on the blackboard. Give more examples for each modal verb to help students understand better. "Must": "Students must do their homework on time." "Mustn't": "We mustn't litter in the park." "Should": "You should help your parents with the housework." "Shouldn't": "Children shouldn't watch TV for too long." Do some grammar exercises. Write some sentences on the PPT with blanks. Ask students to fill in the blanks with the correct modal verbs. For example, "You ____ (must / should) wear a helmet when riding a bike." Check the answers together and let students explain why they choose that particular modal verb. E. Post - reading (5 minutes) Divide students into groups of four. Ask each group to discuss and create a short dialogue about rules in a certain place, such as a cinema. They should use the modal verbs they have just learned. Invite some groups to come to the front of the class and act out their dialogues. The rest of the students listen and watch, and then give some comments. 教学反思 In this class, the use of pictures, real - life examples and group work can effectively arouse students' interest in learning. However, in the future, more vivid teaching aids can be used, such as short videos about rule - breaking and its consequences, to make the content more attractive. When teaching new words and grammar, although multiple methods are used, some students may still have difficulties in mastering them. In the follow - up study, more individual tutoring and extra exercises can be provided for these students. During the group work, some students are more active, while some are relatively passive. Teachers need to encourage all students to participate actively and create a more inclusive learning environment. The connection between classroom learning and real - life situations is established, but it can be further strengthened. For example, students can be asked to observe and record the rules around them in their daily life after class and share them in the next class. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
