Unit 7 Role models of our time-Section 4 Extending and developing competencies-Cross-curricular connection This section is a cross - curricular connection related to archaeology in Unit 7 “Role models of our time” of Shanghai Education Edition (2024) English textbook for Grade 7. It aims to introduce students to the profession of archaeologists, their working methods, and the significance of their work through reading materials. By exploring this content, students can not only improve their English language skills but also expand their knowledge in the field of archaeology, establishing a connection between English learning and other disciplines. 教学目标 Students will be able to understand and use new vocabulary related to archaeology, such as “archaeologist”, “site”, “satellite images”, “dig”, “remains”, “tools” etc. They can comprehend the reading passage about archaeologists and answer relevant questions accurately. Students are expected to express their understanding of archaeologists' work and make simple comparisons between archaeologists and other scientists in English. 教学重难点 1. Key Points Master the new vocabulary and phrases related to archaeology. Comprehend the reading passage about the work of archaeologists, including the work steps and the importance of their work. Guide students to actively participate in class discussions and express their views on archaeologists. 2. Difficult Points Help students understand some abstract concepts in archaeology, such as how to use scientific methods to study remains and make sense of past events. Enable students to make in - depth comparisons between archaeologists and other scientists and clearly express their thoughts in English. 1. New Words and Phrases archaeologist /ˌɑːkiˈɒlədʒɪst/n. 考古学家 site /saɪt/n. 遗址 satellite images 卫星图像 dig /dɪɡ/v. 挖掘 remains /rɪˈmeɪnz/n. 遗迹;遗骸 tools /tuːlz/n. 工具(复数) make sense of 理解;弄懂 2. Key Sentences Archaeologists are like detectives. They collect information, use scientific methods and study data to make sense of past events. First, archaeologists need to find a site. Some sites are on the surface, but others are underground or even underwater. Next, archaeologists start to dig with great care. After this, archaeologists study these remains. 教学过程 1. Lead - in (5 minutes) Greet the students and review the role models learned in this unit briefly. Show some pictures of archaeological discoveries, such as ancient pottery, ruins of buildings, and ask students: “Do you know what these are? Who usually studies these things?” Then introduce the topic of archaeology and archaeologists. 2. Pre - reading (8 minutes) Present the new words and phrases related to archaeology on the PPT. Teach the pronunciation, meaning, and usage of each word through examples. For example, when teaching “archaeologist”, say “An archaeologist is a person who studies human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains.” Let students read the new words and phrases after the teacher several times, and then have a quick dictation to check their learning. 3. While - reading (15 minutes) Give each student a copy of the reading passage “The Archaeologist: History's Detective”. Ask students to skim the passage quickly and answer the question: “What is the main idea of this passage?” (The passage mainly introduces what archaeologists do, how they work, and the significance of their work.) Then, ask students to read the passage carefully again and answer some detailed questions on the PPT, such as: How do archaeologists find a site? What special tools do archaeologists use when digging? Why do archaeologists study remains? After students finish answering, check the answers together and explain some difficult sentences in the passage. 4. Post - reading (12 minutes) Group work: Divide the students into groups of 4 - 5. Ask each group to discuss the following two questions: Why do archaeologists need to be careful at work? What are the differences and similarities between archaeologists and other scientists? (Choose one type of scientist to compare with, such as biologists or physicists.) Each group selects a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class. The teacher gives some guidance and comments during the report. Invite students to share some stories about famous archaeologists they know, like Fan Jinshi. Encourage them to use English to tell the stories as much as possible. 5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summarize the key points of this class, including new words, the work of archaeologists, and the results of the discussion. Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about what they have learned about archaeologists today, at least 80 words. Let students search for more information about archaeology on the Internet or in books and prepare to share it in the next class. 教学反思 After this class, most students showed great interest in the topic of archaeology. Through reading, discussion, and sharing, they have a certain understanding of the work of archaeologists and can master some related English vocabulary and expressions. However, there are still some problems. Some students had difficulties in understanding the abstract scientific methods described in the reading passage, and in the group discussion, a few students were a little shy and did not actively participate in expressing their opinions. In future teaching, more visual aids, such as short videos about archaeological excavations, can be used to help students better understand difficult content. Also, more encouragement and guidance should be given to those students who are not active in class to improve their participation. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
