Our house is across from a famous hospital in a city. We live downstairs and rent rooms upstairs to patients in need.
One summer evening, as I was preparing dinner, there was a knock at the door. It was a man who looked really awful, but his voice was kind. “Good evening. I’ve come to see if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment this morning from a town far away, and the next bus doesn’t come until tomorrow morning. I’ve been looking for a room, but no one seems to have one. I guess it’s my face...” I hesitated, but he added that he could sleep in the chair on the porch (门廊) and leave early. So, finally, I agreed.
When dinner was ready, I invited him to join us. He refused, saying he had brought food. After cleaning up, I went outside to talk with him for a few minutes. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter’s family of seven. Though he had skin cancer (皮肤癌), he was still thankful to be able to keep working. I saw that this old man had a big heart in his tiny body.
We set up a camp bed in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the man was already on the porch. Just before leaving for his bus, he asked if he could stay next time. He said, “Your children made me feel at home; adults are bothered by my face, but they don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was always welcome.
In the years he stayed overnight with us, there was never a time he did not bring us fresh fish or vegetables from his garden. Sometimes, he would also send us packages.
I often think of our next-door neighbor’s words after his first visit—“I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!” But I know our family will always be thankful to have known him. From him, we’ve learned to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude (感激).
3. What does the underlined word “hesitated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. went on B. felt unsure C. was excited
4. Why would this man want to stay at “my” house next time?
A. The room was in good condition.
B. He felt comfortable with “my” children.
C. He could enjoy free food and drinks during his stay.
5 Which word can best describe both the old man and “me”?
A. Friendly. B. Responsible. C. Hardworking.
6. What does the story mainly show?
A. One is never too old to learn.
B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
【答案】3. B 4. B 5. A 6. B
【解析】
【导语】本文讲述了一位面容憔悴的老人因治疗需要临时借宿的故事。
【3题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上下文“I hesitated, but he added that he could sleep in the chair on the porch (门廊 ) and leave early”以及前文描述老人“looked really awful”但声音温和的对比,可知作者当时处于矛盾心理。B项“感到不确定”符合语境。故选B。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据老人的原话“Your children made me feel at home; adults are bothered by my face, but they don’t seem to mind.”可知,老人觉得作者家孩子对他的接纳让他觉得舒适,因此他想以后还继续宿在作者家。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据“I saw that this old man had a big heart in his tiny body”和“I told him he was always welcome”可知,老人虽身患重病仍心怀感恩,而“我”也热情接纳了他。这体现了双方的友善品质。故选A。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。通过邻居的对比“I turned him away!“与作者一家发现老人善良品质的对比,以及结尾“accept the bad without complaint”的感悟,核心是反对以貌取人。故选B。

第一节 简答

Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th. He was widely regarded as the “father of China’s nuclear submarines”.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. Upon graduation, Huang began his lifelong career in the shipbuilding industry.
In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear-powered submarine. From that point on, for the next 30 years, he hardly ever went home.
At that time, China lacked the basic conditions to develop nuclear submarines. Not only did none of the researchers have any knowledge in this field, but other countries were highly protective of such technologies, offering few technical references (技术参考).
So Huang and other researchers started by searching newspapers and magazines for information. After carefully analysing that information and studying two US submarine models, they finally came up with five plans.
The team members didn’t have computers or digital calculators (数字计算器), so they used abacuses (算盘) to solve problems. To ensure the results were correct, they were divided into three groups to do the math at the same time and would do the math again if the three values (数值) were different.
After years of hard work. China finally built its first nuclear-powered submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines.
Even in his 90s, Huang visited his office every weekday morning to review materials of his know-how and experience. In recognition of his great contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour, in 2019.

Liao Wenting, who grew up in a small town in Gansu Province, is now wearing the head-mounted display (头戴式显示器) she saw only in science fiction films in a modern classroom. The classroom has multimedia (多媒体的) teaching systems, VR headsets, 3D printers and other high-tech equipment.
